Donate Your Vehicle!!
If you have a vehicle you don’t want anymore — in any
condition, anywhere in the U.S. — donate it to Cars4KC.
You’ll avoid the hassle of trying to trade, sell or junk it, and
you can get a tax deduction that may reduce your tax burden
this year. Plus, when you donate your car, truck, RV or boat
to Cars4KC, you help people right here in our community.
That’s because the proceeds benefit valuable Catholic
Charities programs and services across the region. Cars4KC
is a joint program between Catholic Charities of Kansas City-
St. Joseph and Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.
Together, the two agencies serve about 250,000 people across
the region every year. If you would like more information on
donating a car, contact Linda Hopkins, Donor Development
Specialist, at [email protected] or 816-659-8205.

Last Sunday, Pope Francis said that his relationship with Benedict XVI gives him strength and reminds him of the living tradition of the Church. “When I hear him speak, I become strong. I hear this story of the Church,” Pope Francis said of Benedict in an in-flight press conference June 2. Speaking aboard the papal flight returning from Romania, Francis said that each time he visits the pope emeritus, he feels more like family.
“Every time I go to visit him I feel like that, I take his hand and get him to talk. He speaks little, slowly, but with the
same depth, as always -- because Benedict's problem is his knees, not his head,” he said. Pope Francis commented that Benedict XVI reminds him that “the tradition of the Church is always in motion.” He compared tradition to “a tree that grows, flourishes, and bears fruit.” “Tradition is the guarantee of the future and not the keeper of the ashes. It's not a museum,” he said, paraphrasing a
quote from composer Gustav Mahler.
Pope Francis and Pope Benedict Relationship
A Note from Father Ed
4|Guardian Angels Parish Kansas City, MO
I ask not only on behalf of these [disciples], but also on
behalf of those who will believe in me through their word,
that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am
in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe
that you have sent me. John 17:20-21
It is encouraging that Jesus is praying for us. He specifically
prays not only for his disciples, but for those who will
believe because of their testimony. He is praying for us. And
what does he pray for us? He prays for two things. First, that
we would be one with each other. And, secondly, that we
would be one with him and the Father. Jesus taught that
when this unity exists, the world will know that he was sent
by God.
How do we experience that unity? As Saint Paul tells us, we
must “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in
humility regard others as better than yourselves.”
Philippians 2:3. That is difficult for most of us who spend so
much of our effort expressing our opinion and protecting
what we believe is ours. That is why there is so little unity in
the church and there is so much confusion about God in the
world.
We live in a world today that seems to have lost the import
of God becoming a man, Jesus, and teaching us the secrets of
the Kingdom of God. Jesus taught us that success was just a
distraction. He taught us that if we focus on God and his
teaching, we would not need to worry about this earthly
existence. He would look after us. He taught us that the way
to God was through forgiveness, acceptance, and love that
shows itself in active charity. He taught us that it was the
mournful, not the happy-with-the-way-things-are who would
be comforted. It is not the rich and famous but the pure in
heart who will see God.
Today we have a great opportunity to make a significant step
towards unity, as we bring together communities that both
love God dearly, but have slightly different ways of
expressing that love. In my years of walking with Jesus I
have known a great many people who have different ways of
expressing their love of God. Some through a variety of
musical styles, others through silent contemplation, still
others with a shout. Some with incense and bells. Some
through dancing. I have come to understand that there is no
wrong way to pray.
Most of us in our natural families have individuals with
different styles of expression. As we come together to form
one church family with a variety of styles, we can all be
enriched in our own expression of love of God and each
other if we are able to separate faith from preference. We all
share a common Catholic faith. But each of us have slightly
different preferences regarding how to express that faith. Let
us seek the unity of faith by allowing each to their love of
God in their own way. And, together we will form a
marvelous harmony of worship.
Yours in Christ,
Father Ed
