1.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The G. GUN II is an energy seismic source belonging to the air gun family. The G. GUN II was developed in order to suppress the need for lubrication and to reduce the operating costs. The architecture of G. GUN II is still based on the G. GUN. The main parts assemblies of G. GUN standard which have been upgraded are:

• The Sleeve • The SV Clamp • The Shuttle Assembly • The Rod • The Sealing Ring Clamp • The Body

Some new parts are added on the G. GUN II, as follow:

• New dynamic and static O’Rings • O’Ring Valve

One type of gun for the entire range of volumes. There is one type of gun (the G. GUN II) for the entire range of volumes; only the Body is different. Hence, the G. GUN II is available with four different Bodies: • the 150 cu. in. � G. GUN II 150 • the 250 cu. in. � G. GUN II 250 • the 380 cu. in. � G. GUN II 380 • the 520 cu. in. � G. GUN II 520 The volume of the G. GUN II 150 and G. GUN II 250 can be easily adjusted with simple and inexpensive plastic inserts, as follow: • For the G. GUN II 150 cu. in.: from 45 to 150 cu. in. • For the G. GUN II 250 cu. in.: from 180 to 250 cu. in. The G. GUN II has been designed and tested by SERCEL M.S.D for continuous operation under 3,000 psi air pressure. An external coil, located on top of the gun, generates the M/P Time break signal when the gun is actually fired. It can be used as independent gun, in Parallel Cluster or Delta Cluster.

In case of use in Parallel Cluster, please refer to the Parallel Cluster Operation and Maintenance Manual. In case of use in Delta Cluster, please refer to the Delta Cluster Operation and Maintenance Manual in which we describe the G. GUN II specially configured for this Delta Cluster Frame

1.3 MODIFIED PARTS

• The Sleeve

- The Exhaust Hole diameter is enlarged to reduce Shuttle re-cocking time preventing water from

entering the firing chamber (see figure 1). - Implementation of an O’Ring Valve onto the Exhaust Hole location (near to Air Coupling) in

order to prevent the water from entering the triggering chamber (see figure 1). - The bore of the Sleeve is enlarged in order to have less friction on the external Cap Ring once the

Shuttle starts moving. A new Back Up Ring is needed to keep the guidance at the bottom (see figure 2).

- The SV Clamp was modified in order to allow the installation of O’Ring Valve (see figure 1)

• The Shuttle Assembly

- The design is changed (see figure 4) - The O’rings inside the Shuttle have been replaced by a couple of O’Ring / Cap Ring more suitable

for high translation velocities (see figure 3) - The material of external Cap Ring is changed.

1.5.1 INTRODUCTION

• The Sercel MSD products/items part numbers (P/N) generally consist of 3 numbers, a letter and 3 numbers.

• Example: 621A100. The letter A is the revision of the item P/N 621-100. • As the revision letter can change, we only mention in this manual the part numbers without the

revision letter. • Do not worry concerning this revision letter: we will take care when processing your order(s).

1.5.2 G. GUN II AVAILABLE The G. GUN II is delivered, by default, with a NPT Female 3/8” air coupling.

1.6 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION (SEE ANNEX 6.1)

1.6.1 FILLING

Compressed air first fills up the return chamber in the hollow Shuttle to close and seal the firing chamber. At the same time, the firing chamber located between the casing and the Shuttle starts to be pressurized.

1.6.2 TRIGGERRING

When the Solenoid valve is energized, the triggering chamber is pressurized allowing the Shuttle to unseal and the Shuttle larger area to be pressurized.

1.6.3 SHOOTING

The lightweight Shuttle quickly acquires a high velocity before uncovering the exhaust. High pressure air is then explosively released into the surrounding water to generate the main acoustic pulse.

1.6.4 RETURN

When the pressure within the firing chamber drops, the still fully pressurized return chamber returns the Shuttle to its pre-fired position.

2 REQUIREMENTS

2.1 AIR REQUIREMENTS

2.1.1 PNEUMATIC CIRCUIT

The compressed air supplied to the gun must be clean. If the compressor is lubricated with a synthetic oil, an oil coalescing filter must be installed.

• Avoid air restrictions in the pneumatic circuit that could reduce the air flow reaching the G.

GUN II .

• The G. GUN II was developed in order to suppress the need for lubrication; therefore the use of lubrication is not mandatory.

• When working under freezing conditions, we strongly advise to inject an antifreeze liquid

into the compressed air to replace oil. We recommend air de-icant "NO TOX 2" from TANNER SYSTEMS:

The quantity of liquid to be injected depends upon numerous parameters.

Previous operations lead to the average of:

- 4 in3 / hour per 100 SCFM or

- 40 cm3 / hour per 100 Nm3/h

2.2.3 SOLENOID VALVE AND TIME BREAK COILS VALUES

• Solenoid valve coil resistance = 4.3 ohms • Solenoid valve coil insulation > 100 Kilo ohms (under 50 volts).

• Time break coil resistance = 130 ohms.

2.2.4 ELECTRICAL JUMPER The jumpers are electrically identical for the Solenoid Valve and for the M/P Time Break. The only difference is the color:

- GREEN for the SOLENOID VALVE - BLUE for the M/P TIME BREAK

It exists in different length and connector types: HEAVY DUTY ELECTRICAL JUMPERS (our “Standard” since Nov 2006)

2.2.5 TIME BREAK SENSOR

This coil/magnet system detects the de pressurization of the G. GUN II firing chamber via a magnetic switch.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Use a 0-1000 Hz filter. Synchronize the guns at minimum B (that is the opening of the magnetic switch) which is close to the maximum output of the gun. A is a cross talk noise due to the solenoid valve pulse. The maximum C is the closing of the magnetic switch.

2.3 MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS

2.3.1 TOWING / HANGING POINTS • Pad eyes on the G. GUN II are designed to be fitted with an inexpensive bushing to avoid the wear on

the metal parts. • The inner diameter of the bushing is to fit a 20 mm bolt. • If a smaller shackle is used, please contact SERCEL, as smaller inner diameter bushings are available

upon request. • It is very important to fit the proper shackle width to avoid slack, causing a quick wear. • Watch the wear on the bushings and do not hesitate to replace them before they are too much worn

out, once again to avoid slack. • Inappropriate size shackle will result in a quick wear of the lug.

The towing / hanging points are identical for the G. GUN II 150 and G. GUN II 250.

3 INSTALLATION

3.3 OVERBOARDING PROCEDURE

1. Connect firing line and check the Solenoid valve (should click when energized). 2. Connect Time break. 3. Blow out the air hose then connect it to the gun. 4. Overboard and immerse the gun. The G. GUN II can be immersed with or without air pressure. In the

case where the gun is immersed without air pressure, then it might take up to 100 warming shots for the M/P Time Break to clear all the water. If time does not allow that many warming shots, then it is preferable to immerse the gun with around 500 psi air pressure.

5. Pressurize the gun up to the firing pressure and fire a number of shots to expel the water from the chamber and the M/P Time Break, if the gun has been immersed without air pressure.

6. GUN IS READY FOR OPERATION. NOTE: Some umbilical required to his deployment 500 psi too. Refer to recommendation of

umbilical manufacturer.

3.4 RETRIEVING PROCEDURE

1. Lower the air pressure down to 500 psi on deck. 2. Bring the gun on board.

4.5 CLEANING

4.5.1 INTRODUCTION After a job at sea or in a harsh environment, and before a storage period, the gun has to be completely dismantled, cleaned, and greased, to limit corrosion damages. For cleaning, we recommended “No sel” product from:

When possible, store the gun disassembled without the seals. For a few hours standby, it is strongly recommended to copiously rinse the gun with fresh water.

4.5.2 CLEANING PROCEDURE

1. Completely dismantled the gun. Upon disassembly of the gun all seals should be carefully removed

(Do not keep seals onto part being cleaned). 2. Dilute “No sel” before its use (1 liter of “No sel” for 5 liters of fresh water). 3. Plunge the concerned parts into the diluted product during 5 min to 30 min. 4. Wipe all the concerned surfaces with a lint free wiper. 5. If the salt remains hard to remove, plunge again parts in the diluted product (Evaluate the necessary

and acceptable time for the cleaning, but do not leave parts more than 45 min). 6. Do not use Scotch Brite to clean the surfaces. The aim of this product being to facilitate and decrease

the cleaning time. 7. Carefully wash parts with fresh water to remove the entire product (before assembly).

4.6 SERVICING THE G. GUN II

All assembly work should be carried out in a clean, dry environment. Spend some extra time cleaning the work bench and covering it with paper. Clean hands and tools before re-assembling the gun.

Upon disassembly of the gun all seals should be carefully removed and the metal parts washed in fresh water and thoroughly dried. If there has been excessive compressor blow-by or no oil coalescing filter has been used, pre wash the parts in varsol, mineral spirits (paraffin) or a proprietary parts washing solvent and blow dry with shop air. After the parts are completely dry, wipe all of the surfaces paying special attention to the O’ring and Bearing grooves. Use a lint free shop wiper. This action is to check for burrs or rough spots that may lead to future trouble. If such burrs or rough spots are found, carefully dress down the area with 600 grit crocus cloth or aluminum oxide dressing paper. DO NOT USE ANY DRESSING PAPER CONTAINING SAND OR FERROUS PARTICLES. DO NOT BUFF THE PARTS WITH A WIRE BRUSH NOR USE A F ILE. This will cause rust and pitting because the surface of the part will become imbedded with particles from the cutting medium.

The internal metal parts of the gun have a special anti-friction, corrosion inhibiting coating and care must be exercised to prevent removal of this coating. The coating, which has a very flat finish (in color), will not rub off against the internal Bearings and seals but will burnish to a very bright shiny finish and look as if it is worn off, this is normal. If it is necessary to dress down the part minimum material should be removed and the part must be carefully washed to remove the spent cutting medium.

Use the proper tool for the job. Do not clamp any part of the gun in a vise unless aluminum jaws have been installed. Do not strike any part of the gun with a metal hammer, a plastic "dead blow" hammer is recommended. Never weld or try to re-machine any part of the gun. This is extremely dangerous! If a part is damaged contact SERCEL INC. or SERCEL MSD as the manufacturer and designer of the equipment only these companies have the expertise to do such repairs.

Before re-assembling the gun coat all metal surfaces lightly by hand, with a very thin film of DOW CORNING 111 (ONE ELEVEN) valve lubricant. This serves two purposes. First it is a final check that all parts are burr free and second this lubricating film helps with the installation of the seals and bearings.

Follow the procedure in the assembly portion of the manual carefully observing the correct positions of the internal parts. Because of the long interval between servicing the gun it is possible to forget, and to install the parts out of order. From field experience an improperly assembled gun can be fully functional and repeatable, but will fail in time. This leads to unnecessary expense.

4.7 EXTENDED SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

If after using the G. GUN II for a period of time and extended service intervals are the norm, there are a few things that can be done to prevent possible problems.

First, on the G. GUN II where the large diameter of the central rod is inserted into the end of the casing, spread a very slight amount of Bostik "Black Moly" never seez into the counter bore or onto the end of the rod. Do not overdo it. A slight amount will prevent any sticking of these two parts when submerged or not disassembled for long periods of time. Do the same on all threaded fasteners to prevent problems.

Secondly, when threading the Solenoid Base/Sub-Assembly into the Coil housing spread a very light film of the same never seez onto the threads of the Sub-Assembly. After the assembly has been screwed together hold the coil up to a light and make sure the two parts are completely seated and no light is visible in the crack between them.

Use a spanner of the proper size (do not use pliers or an adjustable spanner) to bring the two parts fully together. Do not over do it. A snug fit is all that is necessary. If the two assemblies are screwed together only hand tight there could be damage to the threads of the sub-assembly or coil housing over a very long time. Thread damage does not mean the parts are ruined only that extra care must be exercised when inserting the solenoid into the sleeve. The threads are only used to hold the two parts together until the assembly is installed in the gun.

4.8 STORAGE

If the gun is left on deck for extended periods of time the minimum service should be a through fresh water flush. When a project or shooting season is over, we strongly recommend complete disassembly of all the guns and solenoids, a through cleaning as detailed above and the parts should be stored in a disassembled state, with no seal on them.

Remember stainless steel is corrosion resistant as compared to carbon steel, it is NOT corrosion proof, it can corrode or pit if the right conditions exists. Lack of oxygen and the chlorides from sea water are two things that contribute to these conditions.

Because of the longevity of the seals and bearings in the gun it is very tempting to keep the seals in the gun during storage. To save expenses and keep the gun from being damaged it is possible to save the seals and re use them when it is put back into service, but they must be removed from the gun. This can be very tricky logging which seals came from which gun, but it can be done. This practice is only recommended only if spares expenditures must be kept to a bare minimum. The best practice is to always install new seals and bearings when re commissioning the gun. If the seals and bearings are re used after storage do not expect the same service life as obtained from new parts.

When storing the Solenoids do not pack the pin connector counter bore or firing line connector with grease. When the gun is re-commissioned it is nearly impossible to remove the all of the grease from either the Solenoid or plug and when screwed together the high pressure created will cause damage to the Coil housing potting and the solenoid connector. As an alternative use LPS 2 to coat all surfaces to prevent corrosion. This must be washed off upon re-assembly as it forms a waxy film. DO NOT spray any petroleum based lubricating solvent into the gun at any time. It is possible for these materials to ignite or "diesel" under high pressure. If extra lubrication is desired pure silicone liquid can be sprayed or injected into the gun without ignition hazard.

In summary, the G. GUN II will provide the user with years of trouble free service at a very low maintenance cost and very little down time if treated like the precision instrument it is. Because of the long mean time before failure of the gun it is very easy to get into the habit of ignoring the equipment and doing no preventative maintenance. When a problem finally occurs it will be one that could have been easily prevented if proper service schedules and service techniques are performed.

We strongly recommend keeping a daily log of the gun as to performance and maintenance. Over the years this will become an invaluable diagnostic tool.

PREPARING THE G. GUN II SLEEVE 2

1. Install the 2 O'Rings 24 and place G. GUN II Shuttle 4 in the bore of the Sleeve Pusher (tool 603 - 2107).

2. Install the Solenoid Valve Block CX 04, the Air Coupling 5, the O’Ring Valve 35 the M/P Time Break 26 and the G. GUN II S.V Clamp 12 with the 4 Screws 31 and Lock Washers 32.

GUN ASSEMBLY (vertically)

1. Put the G. GUN II Rod 3, with O'ring 18 and 25 installed, inside its hole in the G. GUN II Body 1. 2. When needed, install Volume Reducer 17 on the G. GUN II Sleeve 2. 3. Insert the G. GUN II Sleeve 2 into the G. GUN II Body 1. Align slots. 4. Slightly grease the 2 Keys 28 and install them onto the slots of the G. GUN II Body 1 and G. GUN

II Sleeve 2. 5. Clamp G. GUN II Body 1 and G. GUN II Sleeve 2 with Half Flanges 13 and 14 (do not forget cotter

pins if fitted). 6. Tighten strongly the 4 Screws 31, until Lock Washers 32 are fully collapsed. 7. Screw the shipping cap on the Air Coupling 5, and tape the exhaust ports to avoid foreign material to

enter the gun.

4.11 SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY / DISASSEMBLY

4.11.1 SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY Prior starting, refer to : • Print assembly on annex 6.4 • Recommended torques on paragraph 2.3.3. Clean and dry all the parts. DO NOT USE SOLVENT to clean the poppet, but wipe it with a lint free shop wiper Clean hands of grease and work on a clean bench.

Never put grease inside the Solenoid Valve.

1. Check Coil resistance and insulation (see paragraph 2.2.3 for values). 2. Install O'rings 4 and 5 on the Base 1. Do not grease the O'ring 4. 3. Install the Poppet 12 in the Retainer Seat 10. 4. Slide the assembly in the Plunger NS 11. 5. Slide the Spring 9 in the Plunger NS 11. 6. Install the assembly composed of 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15 in the Sub Assembly 8 (Block Stop 15 first). 7. Put the assembly here above described onto the Base 1. 8. Make sure the Poppet 12 fits on its seat on the Base 1. 9. Holding the two parts together, shake the assembly. A clicking noise should be heard. If not, separate

the two assemblies and check for something blocking the Plunger NS 11 and/or the Poppet 12. 10. Install the four Screws 13 on the Base 1. Screw them evenly in a cross manner. 11. Once again, shake the assembly to hear the clicking noise. If not heard, check for the reason. 12. Screw the Base assembly into the Coil Sub Assembly 2. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN and make sure

the O'ring 4 is still in place. 13. Install the Jumper in the Pins of the Coil Sub Assembly 2, and use the Flange 14 and three Screws 3

to secure it into place. 14. Put O'ring 6 in the hole of the G. GUN II Sleeve of the G. GUN II and install the Solenoid Valve

Block. 15. Make sure the M/P Time Break Assembly is in place. 16. Install the G. GUN II S.V Clamp on the G. GUN II and screw the four Screws 31(see annex 6.1).

Screws 13. 6. Slide the Block Stop 15, the Spring 9, and the Plunger NS 11 out of the Sub Assembly 8. 7. Be careful that nothing fall when doing it. 8. Remove the Block Stop 15, the Spring 9, the Retainer Seat 10 and the Poppet 12 from the Plunger

NS 11. 9. Clean and carefully inspect all the parts for wear, and/ or damage.

NOTE : This procedure is to avoid the Magnets 11 to pull apart from the assembly previously installed. 12. Put the 5 Screws 12 through the Sheath 2 and screw them evenly into the Base 3. 13. Install O’ring 18 on the Threaded Plug 10, and then screw the Threaded Plug 10 onto the Sheath 2

(Torque max = 7 N.m). NOTE: The Threaded Plug 10 has to be changed every 5 disassemblies.

the T.B Shuttle 5 is moving freely inside the Cylinder 6. 19. Slightly grease and install the second O’ring 15 on the Base 3. 20. Install the M/P Time Break Assembly on the gun. Make sure the surface where the O’ring 15 mate

with the G. GUN II Sleeve is free of scratches and dirt.

Using a TORX screwdriver, unscrew the five TORX Screws. 8. Slide, but do not pull, the Sheath 2 away from the Base 3. 9. Be careful that the Magnets 11 contained into the Sheath 2 do not come in contact with any metallic

particles. 10. Flip the Base 3 upside down to separate the Base 3 from the Reservoir 4. 11. Pull the Cylinder 6 out of the Reservoir 4. 12. Be careful as the T.B Shuttle 5 might also come out. 13. Separate the T.B Shuttle 5 and the Stop 9 from the Cylinder 6. 14. Push the Disk 8 out of the Reservoir 4. 15. Carefully remove the O'ring 14 from its groove on the Reservoir 4. 16. Remove both O'ring 15 from the Base 3. 17. Clean and inspect all parts for wear and/or damage.

NOTE: The Bearing 7 has to be changed when its thickness is < 0.87 mm (0.0343”).

5 TROUBLE SHOOTING

5.1 NO FIRE

Gun and air line full of water (Deployment without air pressure).

Pressurize up to 2000 psi and send several electric pulses.
