Each year as we write this welcome letter, we are filled with excitement and joy at the mere thought of a new season at Seagle Music Colony. We spend all year planning: auditioning many singers, choosing the thirty-two emerging artists who will be a part of Seagle Music Colony, and finally getting the colony open and ready to receive this crop of amazing singers and our wonderful staff. Although this is our 103rd season, so many things are new here at SMC! With a fall season almost as robust as our summer season, we are well on our way to achieving one of the dreams we spoke about in last year’s program – that of being a company that operates longer each year.

We are extremely excited about the offerings this summer. In celebration of the great composer and conductor Leonard

Bernstein’s 100th birthday, we present his Broadway/Opera masterpiece Candide in a wonderful realization by Richard Kagey who is celebrating his own anniversary - 56 years at the Colony! Next we bring you, Julius Caesar (Giulio Cesare) by Handel: our first-ever Baroque opera. Stage director Candace Evans promises “no togas in this show” - it will be a modern telling of this ancient story. Following that is John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby after the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Premiered by the Metropolitan Opera in 1999, this grand opera will evoke the sounds and sights of 1920’s New York. Finally, the blockbuster musical Mame by Jerry Herman directed by Kyle Lang will have you singing along with some of the most famous tunes ever written. Mame has been portrayed by many great actresses including Angela Lansbury, Lucille Ball and our own dear Patrice Munsel. The summer also includes a tour of the children’s opera Billy Goats Gruff, two Vespers Concerts, an exciting Alumni Weekend and Concert and of course many special events like the Gala and Guild Luncheon.

This fall “the hill” will still be alive with song as we workshop two new pieces – an opera and a musical - as part of the

American Center for New Works Development. The Ghosts of Gatsby by Evan Mack and Joshua McGuire explores the tempestuous relationship between Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Pooch by Scott Eyerly examines what would happen if a tenor/dog walker had to impersonate Puccini to fool the new boss of a publishing company. We will also have in-school performances of Billy Goats Gruff and a revue called Hey Big Spender featuring the music of Cy Coleman. One of the most exciting projects of the fall is a tour of The Falling and the Rising by Zach Redler and Jerre Dye. This opera explores the lives of our wounded veterans and their recovery. Compassion, courage and conviction are at the heart of the opera, which honors the women and men who defend and protect us.

Last year we quoted Eleanor Roosevelt who said “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” It is

YOUR belief in our dreams that has led us to this wonderful point in the long life of Seagle Music Colony. We cannot do any of this without your support. Your gifts are imperative to continuing the successes we are experiencing now. Every dollar or minute you invest in Seagle Music Colony makes an impact not only on our future, but on the entire world of opera and musical theater. We are creating the future together because we believe in our dream. Together we will change the world.

Thank you for all that you do for Seagle Music Colony.

Tony Kostecki, General Director Darren K. Woods, Artistic Director

I am honored to welcome you to the 103rd season of Seagle Music Colony, our country’s oldest summer vocal training program, and the premier opera and musical theatre production organization in the North Country of New York State. As usual, this year’s summer season will feature some of the world’s most exceptional young vocal talent, but I am truly excited that the Colony has become much more than the premier vocal training program. Last year marked the introduction of the American Center for New Works Development, which, under the auspices of the Seagle Music Colony, is devoted to the creation of new American compositions, and the re-working of recently premiered works. Two such works were last year’s performances of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and the chamber opera The Falling and the Rising. This year’s production of The Great Gatsby is a re-working of this recently premiered opera, using the talents of our emerging artists and renowned faculty. Not only have we expanded Seagle’s artistic scope, we have also begun the implementation of a master plan to enhance our campus. Our new faculty housing facility opened last year, and plans are in development for other building projects including the construction of a new state of the art theater. None of this would be possible without our outstanding leadership and faculty, led by our General Director Tony Kostecki and our Artistic Director/Development Director Darren Woods, who have once again assembled an array of vocal talent that will leave you spellbound during each performance. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention our special group of volunteers led by the members of the Seagle Music Colony Guild, who work tirelessly to ensure the success of the Colony. While we at Seagle have much to be proud of, it is only through your continued support and generosity that our visions for the future can come to fruition. Please take the opportunity to speak with me, Darren, Tony or any of our Board members, about ways in which you feel you can become a member of our Seagle Family and contribute to our exciting future. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the performance.

Seagle Music Colony, the oldest summer singer training program in the country, was founded in 1915 by world renowned baritone, Oscar Seagle. Oscar made several concert tours in the United States and Europe, and recorded albums for Columbia, including the popular World War I hit "Dear Old Pal of Mine." He served from 1903-1914 as teaching associate in Europe with his teacher, the great Polish tenor Jean de Reszke. De Reszke was a star of the Metropolitan Opera as well as Queen Victoria's favorite singer. When Oscar returned home, he opened a studio in Hague, on Lake George, in 1915. He then moved to Schroon Lake and taught at the Brown Swan Club, which is now the Word of Life Inn. In 1922, Oscar bought the property where the Colony currently stands. The Colony was quickly nicknamed "Olowan," an Indian name meaning "Hill of Song." Mr. Seagle's reputation made the Colony a magnet for aspiring singers. During the 1920s, up to 125 students would come each summer, and in the winter many would follow him to Nice, France, for further study at the de Reszke-Seagle School. "There is about the name of Oscar Seagle a glow of brilliant years and extraordinary musical associations. His relationship with the immortal de Reszke and his own position as a master of many singers have made him unique among American artists." (New York Morning Telegram) Oscar's son John was among the most prominent of his pupils. Born in Paris, France, on February 15, 1906, he grew up hearing fine singing from morning to night. When the Seagles left Europe during World War I, John entered the Choir School of St. John the Divine in New York City, where he was the treble soloist for three years. John Seagle made recordings for Decca and RCA-Victor, and sang with a number of weekly network radio programs, including Beatrice Lillie, Burns and Allen, Palmolive, Firestone, Cities Service, Wildroot, Maxwell House, Showboat and Sal Hepatica. He began singing with The Cavaliers Quartet in the 1920s and recorded over 500 hymns with them for an NBC program called The Church in the Wildwood, which was broadcast in many countries.

The Seagle Music Colony Singers were one of the first groups to perform before television cameras. John Seagle served on the staff of WRGB in Schenectady, NY, where Colony singers were frequently called upon to perform. After Oscar Seagle's death in 1945, John directed and taught voice at Seagle Music Colony from 1945 to 1985. The old barn that was Oscar Seagle's studio in Schroon Lake was extended into a theatre in his memory. John also taught voice at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and continued to sing on radio, television and the concert stage. He was honored in June of 1996 by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce as Schroon Lake's Citizen of the Year. John died in 1997, and the John and

Helen Seagle Scholarship was established in memory of John and his wife, who gave many years of devoted service to Seagle Music Colony. Under the stewardship of John’s son Peter, his wife Dodie and their three sons, which continues to this day, the Colony carried on many of the same traditions. Then, in 1996,

Darren K. Woods was hired as General Director. Under his leadership, and with a core staff including Richard Kagey and Tony Kostecki, the Colony has grown to become the "Best Summer Vocal Training Program in the United States" (Classical Singer Magazine, 2000). Today, hundreds of applicants vie for

the opportunity to attend the Colony. In the past twenty years, the Colony has grown from two productions and eight performances per summer to five full productions, an early fall season, and over fifty performances. This growth mandated the need in 2008 for Tony Kostecki to move to full-time resident General Director and Darren Woods to transition to part-time summer Artistic Director. In 2017, Darren returned to the Colony full-time and added to his duties, leadership of the Colony’s fundraising efforts. From its beginning in 1915 and to this day, young singing actors travel from across the country to study with the wonderful faculty and staff who gather every summer "on the hill." In addition to invaluable performance experience in opera and musical theatre, each emerging artist receives weekly music coachings and private voice lessons by the exceptional faculty. Artists also take part in career development classes, acting and dance lessons. Further, they sing in master classes for famous singers and artist managers and learn the ins and outs of the world of opera and musical theatre.

Seagle Music Colony is excited to announce a new program dedicated to development of new works. The program was initiated in 2017 and takes place annually after our regular season, in late summer and early fall (see p. 28 for details about this season). When fully implemented, the program will host three to four full workshop productions, piano-vocal musical readings, libretto workshops and mentoring programs for opera creators. New operas produced during our main season will also be a part of the program.

The Commissioners’ Club has been established to provide support for this new program and will have exclusive member benefits. Members who make a five-year commitment of $5,000 or more above current annual giving will be invited to attend any American Center for New Works Development rehearsal or performance free of charge. This benefit will provide members first-hand insight into how opera is created, from the writing of the text all the way through to a finished production.

Matching Gifts: Does your company provide matching funds for the donations you make? If so, please let us know so we can magnify the impact of your gift.

About Tony Kostecki Tony Kostecki has served as General Director of Seagle Music Colony since 2008 and guided the company

through its Centennial Celebration as well as new heights in organizational development. He first came to

SMC in 1996 as a junior vocal coach and pianist and transitioned to administration in 2006. Tony was the

first full-time year-round employee of the Colony but since he began, the staff has grown to three full-time

year-round, the Colony’s budget has increased by almost 40% and its standing in the North Country

region as well as the greater operatic world has continued to burgeon.

About Vanessa Becerra Vanessa Becerra was an emerging artist at Seagle Music Colony in 2011 and 2012 where she sang Lucy in

Billy Goats Gruff, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Johanna in Sweeney Todd. Since her time at the Colony, she

has participated in young artist programs at Wolf Trap Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Glimmerglass

Festival and Los Angeles Opera. Last summer, she returned to Glimmerglass as a mainstage artist to sing

the role of Laurie in Oklahoma!, and returns this summer as Maria in West Side Story. Her many

engagements across the U.S. include debuts at companies including Fort Worth Opera, Opera San Jose,

Opera Delaware and Chicago Lyric Opera. Roles have included Musetta in La Boheme, Sophie in Werther,

SYNOPSIS

ACT I Caesar victoriously enters Egypt, but his celebration is interrupted by the arrival of Egyptian General Achilla, bearing the severed head of Pompeo, as ordered by his King, Tolomeo. Disgusted by this unwelcome ‘gift’, Caesar hears the laments of Pompeo’s widow Cornelia and son Sesto, who vow vengeance on Tolomeo. In the palace, Cleopatra, plots to remove her brother Tolomeo from power and take possession of the throne, with the help of Caesar. Achilla tells Tolomeo of Caesar’s displeasure and asks for Cornelia as a reward. At Pompeo’s funeral, Cleopatra, (disguised as Lidia, a palace handmaiden,) meets and quickly captivates Caesar. In a meeting with Tolomeo, Caesar cautiously accepts an invitation of hospitality. Cornelia and Sesto confront the king, who orders them both imprisoned. Achilla offers Cornelia her freedom in return for her favors, but she refuses. ACT II Cleopatra, disguised as Lidia, arranges a meeting with Caesar, using her servant Nireno as guide and confidant. Cornelia resolves to take her own life but is saved by Sesto. He has escaped from prison with the aid of Nireno, who tells them Tolomeo has commanded Cornelia to become his concubine. Nireno will smuggle Sesto into the king’s harem to kill Tolomeo. Cleopatra/Lidia meets and charms Caesar, but when she learns that assassins are searching for him, she reveals her true identity and begs him to escape quickly. Caesar refuses and goes to face his enemy. Cleopatra, now truly in love, prays for him. Sesto tries to kill Tolomeo, but is disarmed by Achilla, who summons the king to war. Caesar is believed to have died the previous night, and Cleopatra has fled to the Roman camp to gather an army of revolt. Tolomeo prepares to lead his troops, but tells Achilla that he now wants Cornelia for himself. Achilla realizes his allegiance should be to Cleopatra. ACT III Tolomeo’s troops are victorious and Cleopatra is taken prisoner. Caesar, meanwhile, has survived and prays for help. Sesto and Nireno find the wounded Achilla, who gives Sesto a seal that will give the bearer authority to command his troops. Caesar appears and takes the seal, leaving to storm the palace. Cleopatra, who has prepared to take her own life, is rescued by Caesar. Sesto at last seizes his chance and kills Tolomeo. The battle having been won, Caesar crowns Cleopatra Queen of Egypt. She declares her allegiance to Rome and to Caesar.
