not have an anticipated Mass on Monday evening, but St. Mary’s in Chardon does at 7 pm, nor do we have a midday Mass, but St. Bede’s does at 12:10 pm. Make Mary your Advent guide and you will surely know the way, and the way will be a lot smoother. Perhaps the most valuable “road fixing tool” we have during this Advent time is the sacrament of Reconciliation. Our communal celebration will take place on Monday, December 14th, at 7:00 pm. This is the best time to celebrate this wonderful gift of God’s mercy, forgiveness, and love, espe-cially as we begin this “Year of Mercy”. We are blessed to have a number of priests available to help us celebrate. Please make this a priority in your Advent preparation, and perhaps invite someone who has been away from the Church to come home and begin again. I want to remind you of the very special presentation of Handel’s Messiah this Sunday, today, at St. John Vianney Church at 4:00 pm. Please note the time change, which may make it a bit easier for folks who find it hard to be out later in the evening. The 200 voice choir from throughout Northeast Ohio is conducted by our own Kevin Donahue. I can assure you that this would not only be very enjoyable, but is meant to be a very moving spiritual experience. Come and share in this blessed event. The purpose of this Advent/Christmas season is ultimately to rediscover who Jesus is and to grow more closely in a personal and intimate relationship with Him. One of the ways we hope to enhance your efforts is by giving you the gift of Matthew Kelly’s book, Rediscover Jesus, as a gift to each family on Christmas Eve and Day. This will be followed up by further opportunities to grow and especially by a special workshop by John Wood, a close associate of Matthew Kelly and a representative of Dynamic Catholic, on March 12th. We will talk more about that after Christmas. All we ask is that you read this great book and share it with others. It is our gift to you. Thank you for all your gifts - your generous donations at Thanksgiving to our St. Vincent de Paul Society and Food Pantry, the many, many gifts that are pouring in through our Share-a-Christmas program, the collection today for the Retired Religious Fund, and so much more. You are so good. May God continue to reward you. The second candle on our wreath is lit. Prepare, Prepare. Make the road straight and smooth. May God continue to bless us as we bring the gift of His coming to our world. Peace be with you. In God’s love,

My Sisters and Brothers, PREPARE, PREPARE the way of the Lord. . .the Lord our God is coming soon. As we sing those beautiful words and hear them in our Gospel this weekend, we are challenged with the task of understanding what it means in a practical and real way to “make straight His paths”. Start with identify-ing the things that get in the way, the roadblocks. Our sins, big and small, block the flow of God’s life and love for us. Distorted attitudes and ways of thinking can easily throw us off course. Habits that have become ingrained into our way of living can delude us in thinking we are going in the right di-rection, when actually, we may be way off course. John the Baptist calls us to do some road work - filling in the valleys, leveling the mountains, and straightening out the road. I think that has to do with looking at what may be lacking in our lives - time for prayer, reflection, and contemplation, as well as what may be in excess - materialism, overwork, or too much leisure. A healthy life takes balance. And, I think all of us may have to admit we have made some bad choices or find ourselves with mixed up priorities that cause the road to have dangerous twists and turns. Preparing the way of the Lord is something we must do year round, but Advent is a time to renew and intensify our efforts with a greater sense of urgen-cy and passion. So have a plan, focus, and stay the course. The Lord our God is coming soon. Our first evening of Night Prayer last Sunday went extremely well. It was very prayerful, very peaceful, and a wonderful way to spend a little time in the presence of the Lord praying the Liturgy of the Hours with the Church. Although it was only twenty minutes, 7:45 – 8:05, I felt a great calm at the end of a busy day and a genuine deepening of my awareness that the Lord was near. I estimate we had about a hundred people, and everyone I spoke with had very similar feelings. We are going to continue with this at least until Easter and hopefully, depending on the response of people, well after that. I would strongly encourage you to come whenever you are able. This is very suitable for whole families, and very accessible for families who are picking up youth after any of our Sunday evening faith formation programs. I know it is somewhat new for most people, but very meaningful and beautiful. This little bit of time can make a very big differ-ence in your life and preparation time. No one could guide us better to prepare for the coming of the Lord than our Blessed Mother. This coming Tuesday, De-cember 8th, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the pa-tronal feast of our country, and God knows we need Mary’s protection, intercession, and guidance in these turbulent times. This is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics, and a day we should all want to celebrate fully at the Table of the Lord. Morning Masses are at 7:00 and 8:05 (with the school community), and evening Masses are at 5:00 and 7:00. We do

    LITURGY CORNER

As we continue through the Advent Season this weekend with the Second Sunday of Advent, let’s remember that through Advent we reflect on the three comings of Christ. First, we remember his coming in history in the Incarnation. Second, we celebrate God’s

presence among us now. And finally, we look forward to Christ’s Second Coming when he will judge the living and the dead. At St. Gabriel, we have several opportunities to enrich our prayer lives as we reflect during this holy season. Each Thursday during Advent, we celebrate family prayer night, praying the rosary together following the 7:00 pm Mass. On Sunday evenings at 7:45pm, we pray Night Prayer combined with Eucharistic Adoration to provide us a brief, prayerful reflection that will prepare us for the coming week. This Tuesday, December 8th, is the Feast of the Immaculate Concep-tion. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. This feast is about Mary’s conception without original sin in order to be a fitting vessel for giving birth to the Son of God. The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she has found favor with God and will soon bear a Son who will be our Savior. Finally, please keep in mind our annual Advent Communal Reconciliation Celebration on Monday, December 14th to fully cleanse ourselves in preparation for the feast of Christmas.

Music Notes … A voice crying out in the desert ... prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his path. As John the Baptist was that "voice" calling for repentance ahead of Jesus' public ministry, whose voice is cry-ing out to us today? Are there any voices calling us to focus on the Lord, await his coming with joy, ready our hearts? The answer is yes! We have heard a call to ready our hearts, to focus on the com-ing of the Lord. We hear that message in the Scripture and at Mass during this Advent season. We also hear it through all of the invita-tions to opportunities available this month. Like the communal penance service, Sunday evening night prayer, and the epic musi-cal story of Jesus' ministry - Handel's Messiah. The 67th Annual presentation of Handel's Messiah by the Lake County Messiah Chorus is this Sunday, December 6th at 4 p.m. at St. John Vianney Church on Bellflower Road in Mentor. The 185-voice choir and string orchestra with harpsichord and organ is under the direction of our own Kevin Donahue. Make plans to come to any or all of the opportunities for spiritual growth this Advent available to us. Remember, a voice is calling ... "Prepare, prepare the way of the Lord," From "Prepare, Prepare."

Society of St. Vincent de Paul St. Gabriel Conference

    2015 Report to Parishioners

“Whatsoever you did to the least of My brothers and sisters, you did it to Me.” (Matt:26:45) Our 2015 Activity Report During the past year (October 2014 through September 2015), our SVdP volunteers fielded hundreds of calls for assis-tance. We made 236 personal visits and 88 other contacts, which provided help to 640 people, a 23% increase from last year.

All of the contributions made by St. Gabriel parishioners were used to help the needy in our area. Our operating expens-es were about 1.7 % to cover postage, office supplies, and other items.

Our volunteers devoted almost 4,500 hours of service and traveled more than 5,600 miles in service to the needy in 2015.

In addition to the above, our conference conducted a School Supply drive, a Blanket Sunday collection, and the annual Share–A–Christmas campaign. The School Supply drive, in cooperation with many other area churches and businesses, provided supplies to over 2000 needy children. The Blanket Sunday collection, in conjunction with St. Mary’s (Painesville), provided blankets and bedding to almost 250 people. Share-A-Christmas helped approximately 120 fami-lies (540 individuals) in our area.

While we are all still feeling the effects of the financial downturn, the poorest among us feel it the most. We can only help when we have the means to do so. Your contributions help us help others. Without a generous bequest from a non-parishioner, we would have run out of funds and had to turn away almost 76 families we helped this year. Remember, as Jesus said, “what you did for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me”.

Thank you for all your support. Who We Are The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organization offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering. Founded in France in 1833, the Society reached the U.S in 1845 and Cleveland in 1865. This year marks the 150th anniversary of our presence in the Cleveland diocese. The St. Gabriel conference was organized in 1986. Our conference has been providing assistance in Lake County for 29 years. Funds for our ministry come from you – from quarterly collections and the charity of St. Gabriel parishioners. We also received several memorial contributions this past year.

How do we help? Money entrusted to us is used to help the needy with rent, utilities, food, medicine and other essentials. We coordinate with other agencies to assist our clients with these and additional needs such as clothing or furniture. We work closely with our Food Pantry, Furniture Bank, and other parish ministries.

We respond to most requests for help by conducting a home visit by two of our volunteers. Discussions are always con-fidential, and include an overview of needs, current financial situation and sources of help.

Typical people served in 2015 include families facing eviction or utility disconnection; homeless; a family living with-out heat and electricity for several months; parents who have lost their jobs; single mothers struggling to make ends meet; and victims of domestic violence.

Our thanks to YOU! Through your generous contributions, YOU make possible the charitable works of the Society and share in the blessings of doing Christ’s work. “Being Christ • Every Day • Everywhere.”

May God bless YOU for your continued generosity. YOU help us to help others.

For anyone interested in learning more about our activities and considering becoming a Member of this outreach team please contact the Church Office.

Toy Time … It is the biggest time of the year for toy sales and the Consumer Product Safety Commission is on your side to keep kids safe. With increased vigilance and inspection of toys before they enter our ports and hit our shelves there has been a decrease in the need for toy recalls. Comparing 2008 to 2015, 172 total recalls with 19 involving lead was reduced to 25 total recalls only 3 of which involved lead. The CPSC is doing their job and we as consumers need to continue to do ours as well. Make sure the toys purchased are age appropriate for children and they don’t pose a threat to younger siblings. Choking on small parts and pieces is a top safety risk. Wearing appropriate safety gear is important to decrease injuries from bikes, scooters, and skate boards. Small powerful magnets can be swallowed and create dangers of bowel obstructions. Toys should be checked every 3 months for safety risks including batteries for excessive heat production or corrosion which could cause chemical burns or poisoning. To learn the latest safety recalls or report hazardous products, visit www.cpsc.gov or call 800-638-2772. Here’s to our health!
