Undergraduates who achieve a First Class in University examinations (or equivalent in unclassed examinations) are awarded both a Scholarship and a Prize. Each Scholarship carries a

value of £150, except in the case of College Senior Scholarships (value £300).

Prizes are worth a further £150, so that the reward for a First Class Tripos Result is generally £300.

Scholarships are held for the academic year following the award. Scholars are invited to attend the Commemoration Dinner in April, and are also given priority in the room ballot

held during the Lent Term.

COLLEGE SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Eligibility A College Senior Scholarship shall be awarded for a First Class in Finals or equivalent. The value shall be £300 and shall only be paid to those re-admitted, normally in the Michaelmas Term following Graduation, to read for a post-graduate course with the intention of proceeding to a PhD. The Scholarship shall be renewable for two further academic years, subject to an annual report of satisfactory progress. The holder of a College Senior Scholarship shall not be eligible for a 1912 Senior Scholarship. In the case that the holder of a College Senior Scholarship be awarded a named postgraduate scholarship, the award will be honorary. For those who are not undergraduates of the College, a College Senior Scholarship will be awarded to support research, based on merit. The Scholarships are awarded by the Tutorial Committee on the advice of the Graduate Tutors.

1912 SCHOLARSHIPS Title These awards were established in 1912 following an appeal to Fitzwilliam men to provide funds for awards previously given by the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers. Eligibility Awards may be made without restriction of subject. Number of Awards Not more than five 1912 Scholarships shall be awarded (excluding Senior Scholarships) each year.

BARNES SCHOLARSHIP

Title

The Barnes Scholarships were established in 2012 by a gift from Simon Barnes, who read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam between 1987-90 and completed his PhD at the College in 1993.

Method of Payment

The value of a Scholarship for a continuing undergraduate shall be £150. The value of a Senior Scholarship shall be £300 if the recipient is re-admitted to the College to a research degree, or

£150 if re-admitted to a taught postgraduate degree. Scholars shall be afforded certain other privileges.

Eligibility

A maximum of four scholarships will be awarded each academic year in recognition of First class results in each Part of the Natural Sciences Tripos. A Scholarship is normally renewable if the recipient achieves a further First Class result. A Barnes Senior Scholarship shall be awarded to a student achieving a First in Part III of the Natural Sciences Tripos who is re-admitted, normally in the Michaelmas term following graduation, to read for a postgraduate course.

JEANNE-MARIE BOURDEAU MEMORIAL AWARD Title The Jeanne-Marie Bourdeau Memorial Award was established in 2001 by a gift from Mr P W Rest who read for the Geography and Economics Triposes 1946-1949, in memory of his wife Jeanne-Marie Bourdeau-Rest.

Method of Payment Payment is made direct to the award-holder by the College, with a copy of Mr Rest’s tribute to his wife.

Eligibility The Jeanne-Marie Bourdeau Memorial Award may be awarded to an undergraduate who obtains a First Class in Modern and the Medieval Languages Tripos, with preference given to those reading French. The character of candidates will be taken into consideration.

THE BURROW FUND Title The Burrow Fund was established in 1989 by a gift from Mr R P Burrow (MA 1976), who read History and Law at Fitzwilliam College from 1969-72. The Burrow Fund supports the following scholarships:- The Marion Burrow Scholarship Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Medicine, but if there are no candidates of sufficient merit awards may be made to an undergraduate studying a related subject. The Irene Hill Scholarship Preference will be given to an undergraduate studying European Languages, with special emphasis on English, French and German, but if there are no candidates of sufficient merit awards may be made to an undergraduate reading for any Arts subject. The Ellen Hughes Scholarship Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading History but if there are no candidates of sufficient merit awards may be made to an undergraduate reading for any Arts subject.

The Vincent Joseph Hughes Scholarship Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Architecture or Engineering (particularly if this includes a Part II Option in Aeronautical Engineering). Number of Awards One of each of the above Scholarships may be awarded each year.

CLOTHWORKERS’ SCHOLARSHIPS Title Clothworkers' Scholarships are awarded by the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers. Eligibility Awards may be made without restriction of subject. Number of Awards The number of Clothworkers' Scholarships awarded shall only be limited by the funds available.

CLOUGH SCHOLARSHIPS Title Clough Scholarships are funded by a bequest from the late R H Clough who read English and Law at Fitzwilliam House 1929-32. Eligibility Awards may be made without restriction of subject. Number of Awards The number of Clough Scholarships awarded shall only be limited by the funds available.

PETER CONSTABLE SCHOLARSHIP Title The Peter Constable Scholarship was established in 2013 by a gift from Peter Constable, who read Medicine at Fitzwilliam between 1982 and 1985. Eligibility The Peter Constable Scholarship shall be awarded to a medical student achieving a First in the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos.

DR WILLIAM EDWARDS SCHOLARSHIP Title The Dr William Edwards Scholarships were established in 2001 by a bequest by Mrs M E Dally. Dr William Eaton Edwards was the late brother of Mrs Dally; he was at Fitzwilliam House and took his Doctorate in Music in 1932. Eligibility A Dr William Edwards Scholarship may be awarded to a candidate who obtains a First Class in a Part IA Tripos examination. Preference will be given to candidates reading Music.

Number of Awards The number of Dr William Edwards Scholarships awarded shall only be limited by the funds available.

EXCELECT SCHOLARSHIP

Title The Excelect Scholarships were established in 2003 by Dr Kourosh Saeb-Parsy who matriculated in 1993, qualified as a medical doctor, and gained a PhD in Neuroscience in 2001. He was MCR President in 1998/1999.

Method of Payment No monies are held by the College, and payments are made by Excelect Ltd, upon the recommendation of the Master and Tutors.

Eligibility An Excelect Scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate at the end of his or her second year of study who obtains a First Class (or equivalent) in examinations, and who has made a valuable contribution to College life. Number of Awards Up to two Excelect Scholarships may be awarded each year.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY COLEBY SCHOLARSHIP Title The Coleby Scholarship was established by the Fitzwilliam Society in 2005 in memory of Roger Coleby. Mr Coleby read Estate Management in 1950-53. He was President of the Fitzwilliam Society in 1990, and Chairman of the Fitzwilliam Society Trust in 2003. He pursued a successful career as a Chartered Surveyor. Eligibility The Fitzwilliam Society Coleby Scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate reading Land Economy.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

Title The Fitzwilliam Society Scholarship was established by the Fitzwilliam Society Trust Limited in 2007. Eligibility The Fitzwilliam Society Scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate reading any subject.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY SKINNER SCHOLARSHIP Title The Skinner Scholarship was established by the Fitzwilliam Society Trust in 2002 in memory of Andrew Skinner (Dinner Secretary of the Society), who read Archaeology and Anthropology and Law at Fitzwilliam College from 1970-1973, and subsequently pursued a brilliant career in banking and corporate finance.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP Title The Taylor Scholarship was established by the Fitzwilliam Society in memory of Francis Hillier Taylor, who read History at Fitzwilliam House from 1928-31. Eligibility The Fitzwilliam Society Taylor Scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate reading History.

TIM GRAY LAW SCHOLARSHIP Title Tim Gray read Law at Fitzwilliam (BA 1974) and a Scholarship was established in 2009 by a generous gift from his wife, Katharine Gray, to celebrate the occasion of their marriage. Eligibility The Tim Gray Law Scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate reading Law. Value The value of a Tim Gray Scholarship shall be £150. The number of Tim Gray Scholarship awarded shall be limited only by the funds available.

RAWLINS SCHOLARSHIP Title The Rawlins Scholarship, originally funded by Dr W K S Wallersteiner who read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam House 1936-39, commemorates Mr F I G Rawlins (Supervisor in Crystallography 1929-34 and Director of Studies in Natural Sciences 1932-34 at Fitzwilliam House). Eligibility The Rawlins Scholarship may be awarded to a candidate who obtains a First Class in Part IA of the Natural Sciences Tripos.

REDDAWAY SCHOLARSHIPS Title Reddaway Scholarships were established in 1966 by a gift from King's College to be used together with donations from Mrs W F Reddaway and her family between 1958-63 in memory of W F Reddaway, Censor of Fitzwilliam Hall 1907-24, previously Lecturer in History at Fitzwilliam Hall 1896-1907. Eligibility Awards may be made in Arts subjects. Number of Awards The number of Reddaway Scholarships awarded shall only be limited by the funds available.

THE WALKER FUND

Title The Walker Fund was established in 1989 by a gift from Mr Hubert P Walker (BA 1937) who read Geography at Fitzwilliam House, and was augmented by further gifts in 1990 and 1991. The Walker Fund supports the following scholarships:- The Irene Walker Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mr Walker's wife, Mrs Irene M Walker. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Geography. The Thomas Walker Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mr Walker's father, the Revd Dr Thomas Walker. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Earth Sciences. The Donald Walker Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mr Walker's brother, Donald Walker. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Natural Sciences. The Henry Locke Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mr Henry R Locke, sometime Head of Modern Languages at Rutlish School, Merton. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Modern Languages. The David Mason Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mr David Mason, a promising young graduate of the University of Warwick, whose father was a friend of Mr Walker and an engineer. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Engineering. The Muriel Lawrence Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mrs Muriel I Lawrence, a friend of Mr Walker, who spent much of her life caring for others. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Medicine. The Wilfred Wilde Scholarship The Scholarship is named in memory of Mr Wilfred S Wilde, a long-standing personal friend of Mr Walker. Preference will be given to an undergraduate reading Plant Sciences. Eligibility If there are no candidates of sufficient merit for any of the above scholarships, awards may be made to undergraduates studying related subjects.

GEOFF WALKER SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE FIELD OF HISPANIC STUDIES Title The Geoff Walker Scholarship for excellence in the field of Hispanic Studies was established in 2015 in honour of Dr Geoff Walker, who matriculated in 1955 and completed his BA, MA and PhD all at Fitzwilliam. In 1962 he was appointed to a lectureship in the University Department of Spanish, and in 1967 he was elected to a Fellowship of the College. In 1974 he became Director of Studies for MML, a post he held for over 20 years. The Scholarship is supported by gifts from alumni, Fellows, and friends of the College. Eligibility The Scholarship may be awarded to any undergraduate or graduate student of the College who has excelled in Hispanic Studies (Spanish, Catalan and Spanish-American), including language, literature, music, history, politics, economics, archaeology, sociology and other cognate disciplines. An award made to a graduate student may be designated a ‘Geoff Walker Prize’.

W W WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP Title

The W.W. Williams Scholarship was established in 2014 by a gift from Professor Glen Norcliffe, who read Geography at Fitzwilliam between 1962 and 1965. It is named in honour of Bill Williams,

who was Bursar (1946-1967), Director of Studies in Geography and Acting Censor of Fitzwilliam. Eligibility The W.W. Williams Scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who achieves First Class results in any part of the Geography Tripos.

S S SAMRA SCHOLARSHIP Title The S S Samra Scholarship was established in 2014 by S S Samra who read Computer Science at the College between 1991 and 1994. Eligibility Awards may be made without restriction of subject, for students completing their second or third years.

GRADUATE STUDENTSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Fitzwilliam College offers a number of full and partial Studentships and Scholarships for postgraduate study.

FITZWILLIAM STUDENTSHIPS

One year courses Fully funded 1-year Studentship covers University and College fees plus a stipend for maintenance. Fitzwilliam College must be applicant’s first choice on University application form. Closing date end of March with decisions in July. PhDs Covers a full stipend for maintenance but does not cover fees. Tenable for 3.5 years. Fitzwilliam College must be applicant’s first choice on University application form. Closing date end of April with decisions in July.

COLLEGE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS Title The College Graduate Scholarships are awarded by the College. Number of awards One College Graduate Scholarship is awarded each year. It is open to graduates who wish to undertake research with the intention of proceeding to a PhD. Preference may be given to a graduate reading an Arts subject. Value The value of the College Graduate Scholarship shall be £1,250 a year and is tenable for up to three years. Candidates need to re-apply each year.

FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE GRADUATE FUND Title The Fitzwilliam College Graduate Fund was established in 2013, and shall be used to support Graduate students of the College. Value The capital and income of this expendable fund may be used at the discretion of the Graduate Tutor and Senior Tutor, in accordance with guidelines established by the Tutorial Committee.

THE E D DAVIES SCHOLARSHIPS Title The E D Davies Scholarships are funded by income from the E D Davies Fund established in 1995 by a bequest from Mr E D Davies (BA 1931), who read Geography and History at Fitzwilliam House between 1928 and 1931. Eligibility The Scholarships may be awarded to graduates who have been admitted to a course of research.

Number and Value of Awards Two scholarships may be awarded each year. The value of a Scholarship shall be £1250 per annum. Tenure A Scholarship may be held for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress.

GIBSON STUDENTSHIP FOR NEW TESTAMENT STUDIES Title The Gibson Studentship is funded by surplus income from gifts made between 1889 and 1896 by Dr Margaret D Gibson, the Oriental and New Testament scholar and widow of Mr J Y Gibson (1826-86), who was a translator of Spanish.

Eligibility The Studentship may be awarded to a graduate student who has been accepted by the College and the Faculty of Divinity (exceptionally another Faculty) to work for a doctorate in the field of New Testament Studies. Preference will be given to those who name Fitzwilliam as their first choice College.

Value The value of the Studentship will be £1000 per annum and it may be held (subject to satisfactory progress) for up to three years.

LEATHERSELLERS' GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS Title The Leathersellers' Graduate Scholarships are awarded by the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers. Method of Payment Payment is made direct to award-holders by the Company. Eligibility The Scholarships shall be open to all home graduates from any British University who have been admitted to a course of research in the Physical or Biological Sciences, Mathematics or Engineering. The Scholarships are designed to supplement funding from other sources. Number of awards Three Leathersellers' Graduate Scholarships, one per year, may be awarded. Value The value of a Leathersellers Graduate Scholarship shall be £3,000 per annum, for three years. Priority will be given to the holders of such a scholarship in the graduate housing ballot.

ROBERT LETHBRIDGE STUDENTSHIP IN MODERN LANGUAGES Title The Robert Lethbridge Studentship in Modern Languages was established in 2013 by donations received in honour of Professor Robert Lethbridge, Fellow (1973-1992), Senior Tutor (1982-1992) and Master of Fitzwilliam College (2005-2013). Eligibility The Robert Lethbridge Studentship in Modern Languages shall be awarded to a postgraduate student of the College reading Modern Languages. Value The value of the Studentship will be limited only by the funds available.

HIRST PLAYER STUDENTSHIP The income from the Fund established in memory of Eric Noel Player and Wilfrid Bertram Hirst (both Fitzwilliam Hall 1911-14) shall be used to provide bursaries and studentships for men or women, preferably ordinands, reading for a Degree or a Diploma in Theology. Candidates must have been admitted or be candidates for admission to membership of the College. Preference will be given to those who either have taken or are intending to take Holy Orders in a Christian Church which is a member of the World Council of Churches.

(a) The names of candidates for studentships shall be proposed either by Tutors of the College or by the Principals of Ridley Hall, Wesley House, Westcott House and Westminster College by the end of Full Easter Term, in any or all of the following categories:

(i) Overseas students who need additional support in order to be able to read for the Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, the Diploma in Theology or the Examination in Theology for the MPhil Degree; (ii) Candidates for the Diploma in Theology or the Examination in Theology for the MPhil degree who are not supported by a DES or LEA award; (iii) Candidates for the Theological and Religious Studies Tripos who may not be eligible for support from Church funds in order to read for the Tripos; (iv) Other deserving candidates for whom a special case may be submitted.

(b) All candidates shall provide a statement of their financial circumstances. (c) A joint committee, consisting of three members of the Governing Body, and normally the Tutor for Graduate Students, the Tutor for Admissions (Arts) and the Director of Studies in Theology, and the Principals of the Theological Colleges, shall prepare a list of not more than three names by 30 June for submission to the Master and Tutors who shall have power to make the award.

(d) In making an award the Master and Tutors shall attempt so far as may be possible to give priority to candidates for graduate rather than undergraduate courses and they shall also have regard to the desirability of an even distribution of awards among the various theological colleges. (e) The value of the Award shall be determined from time to time to a maximum of the University and College fees chargeable; a candidate shall be eligible to receive additional funds or an award from other sources to meet the full cost of such fees without being required to vacate the studentship under Regulation 3(f). (f) A candidate who is awarded the studentship because he is not in receipt of support from other sources to pay his University and College fees, shall vacate it if he subsequently receives such support from other sources. If he vacates it before his course has begun it shall be offered to the next candidate on the list. If he vacates it during an academical year the Master and Tutors shall have power to carry forward the income thereby made available so as to make an additional award in the following year. (g) Subject to the availability of funds, in exceptional circumstances a grant towards maintenance may be made. (h) Subject to the availability of funds, normally one award shall be made at a time for two years, except in the case of candidates for the Diploma in Theology when the award shall be for one year.

SHIPLEY STUDENTSHIP

Title The Shipley Studentship is funded by income from the Shipley Fund established in 1985 by a bequest from Mrs E M C Shipley in memory of her husband Joseph William Shipley (1892-1981) who read Theology at Fitzwilliam House between 1912-1914. Eligibility The Shipley Studentship may be awarded to a member of the College who has been admitted to a course of research in the Faculty of Divinity (or exceptionally a course of research on a theological topic in some other Faculty), and shall be tenable for one year only. The Studentship shall normally be awarded to a candidate who is about to begin a course of research at Cambridge, and shall be competitive on the grounds of academic merit. Number of Awards One Shipley Studentship may be awarded each year. Value The value of the Shipley Studentship shall be £1,250.

PETER WILSON ESTATES GAZETTE FUND

Title The fund (£400,000) was established in 2013 by Mrs Audrey Wilson in memory of Mr Peter Wilson, owner of the Estates Gazette (1972-1991)) and Honorary Fellow and Benefactor of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. It was established to encourage expertise in Land Economy that will be put to good use in the wider world in the future.

The income from the fund (but not the capital) is to be used to support postgraduate study in Land Economy (or equivalent subjects) at Fitzwilliam College.

Awards made from the fund shall be known as "Peter Wilson Estates Gazette Scholarships".

The terms of the fund shall not be changed without the explicit agreement of both Fitzwilliam College and Mrs Audrey Wilson, or her legal representatives, whether attorneys or executors (Representative), for so long as it is reasonably possible to identify them.

Regulations Awards shall be based upon academic merit.

The number and value of individual awards shall be at the discretion of the Tutors, on the recommendations of the Graduate Tutor and Director of Studies in Land Economy, and subject to the following order of priority:

1. Masters students – awards to be at a level of not less than £3,000 per person to be used towards the cost of tuition fees or maintenance during their course of study.

2. PhD students – awards to be at a level of not less than £1,000 per year and spread evenly over the period of study.

3. Undergraduate students in their final year who also demonstrate financial need. Awards of up to £4,000 but normally £3,000, may be used to offset fees or maintenance costs; generally undergraduates would only be expected to benefit where an award will encourage them to proceed on to a Masters' degree.

The names and academic progress of students to whom awards are made shall be advised to Mrs Wilson (or her Representative) and to the authorised officials of the Estates Gazette.

The holders of Peter Wilson Estates Gazette Scholarships may be required to contribute to media coverage promoting the benefits of the Scholarships. Holders will have the opportunity to apply for available internships at the Estates Gazette.

There is to be no conflict with other awards. In the event of other funds being made available for similar purposes in the future, the regulations are to be reviewed in the light of the criteria for other such awards.

These regulations may be amended by the Governing Body of the College should circumstances require, after consultation with Mrs Audrey Wilson or her Representative, and the authorised representative of the Estates Gazette.

In the case that the holder of a College Senior Scholarship be awarded a named postgraduate scholarship, the award will be honorary. The Scholarships are awarded by the Tutorial Committee on the advice of the Graduate Tutors.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY J R W ALEXANDER LAW BOOK AWARDS Title The J R W Alexander Studentship was established in 1989 by the Fitzwilliam Society Trust to commemorate the name of the founder and first secretary and treasurer of the Fitzwilliam Society, J R W Alexander, CBE (1897-1985). 'Alex' as he was widely known read History and Law at Fitzwilliam and proceeded to the degrees of BA and LLB in 1924. Called to the Bar from the Inner Temple in 1925, he was successively Parliamentary Secretary to the Society of Incorporated Accountants and Arbitrators, Secretary to the Institution of Gas Engineers, President of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, President of the Institute of Arbitrators and Chairman of the London Court of Arbitrators. Value Students starting the LLM course or the MCL course as members of Fitzwilliam College will be awarded a Law Book Grant to the value of £100. This will be in the form of book tokens. No application is necessary.

STACHULSKI-DUDDING STUDENTSHIP IN CHEMISTRY Title The Stachulski-Dudding Studentship was established in 2014 by Dr A V Stachulski, who read Natural Sciences from 1968 to 1971 and obtained a PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1974, and Mr J Dudding, who also read Natural Sciences from 1968 to 1971, and was awarded a College 1912 Exhibition. Eligibility The Stachulski-Dudding Studentship may be awarded to any student reading for a PhD in Chemistry, with a preference for Organic Chemistry. Value The value of the Stachulski-Dudding Studentship is £3,000 per annum, for a maximum of 4 years.

ACADEMIC PRIZES FOR FIRST CLASS TRIPOS RESULTS

Undergraduates who achieve a First Class in University examinations (or equivalent in unclassed examinations) are awarded both a Scholarship and a Prize. Each Prize carries a value of £150.

The exception is the Mary Lucking Prize, of £300.

Scholarships are worth a further £150, so that the reward for a First Class Tripos Result is generally £300.

MARY LUCKING PRIZE

Title The Mary Lucking Prize was established in 1985 by Mr T S Lucking, who read Geography at Fitzwilliam House 1926-29, in memory of his wife. Eligibility The Mary Lucking Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College without restriction of subject who, in the opinion of the Master and Tutors, has the most exceptional record of academic achievement during his or her Cambridge career. Value The value of the Mary Lucking Prize shall be £300.

BURTON PRIZE Title The Burton Prize is funded by gifts from J C G Burton who read English and Moral Science at Fitzwilliam House 1928-31. Eligibility A Burton Prize may be awarded preferably to an undergraduate reading English or, failing there being suitable candidates, any other Arts subject. Value The number of Burton Prizes awarded shall be limited only by the funds available.

BUSINESS FELLOWS' PRIZE Title The Business Fellows' Prize is funded by a gift made in 1989 by the Post Office in gratitude for the hospitality accorded by the College to Mr K Phillips, a Business Fellow from the Post Office for the Lent Term 1989. Eligibility The Business Fellows' Prize may be awarded preferably to an undergraduate reading Management Studies or, failing there being a suitable candidate, Manufacturing Engineering or Economics. THE HEATHER BUTCHER PRIZE

Title The Heather Butcher prize was established in 2007 by a gift from Mr Teän Butcher. Heather, his wife (1986), read Social and Political Sciences (SPS) at Fitzwilliam College. The prize celebrates the birth of their four children, Clea, Gwen, Ross and Herm. Eligibility The Heather Butcher prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has shown academic excellence in SPS.

THE PAUL CASSIDY PRIZE Title The Paul Cassidy Prize is funded by a gift made in 2011 by Paul Cassidy who read for the Classics Tripos at Fitzwilliam from 1981-1984. Eligibility The Paul Cassidy Prize shall be awarded to an undergraduate who has shown academic excellence in any part of the Classical Tripos.

THE NICK CLARKE PRIZE Title The Nick Clarke prize was established in 2007 by a collective gift in his memory from the friends of Nick C Clarke (1967) who read Modern and Medieval Languages at Fitzwilliam, was President of the Fitzwilliam Society from 2001 to 2002 and had a distinguished career as a broadcaster and author. It is intended to reflect Nick’s origins in MML and his later passion for cricket. Eligibility The Nick Clarke prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has achieved academic excellence in an Arts or Humanities subject and who has made a distinguished contribution to College life.

COCKLE PRIZE Title The Cockle Prize is funded by the bequest from Mrs Evelyn M Cockle whose son, R F C Cockle read Geography at Fitzwilliam House 1930-33. Eligibility The Cockle Prize may be awarded to the best undergraduate in the College who obtains a First Class in the Geography Tripos except that in a year which the best result is obtained by a student awarded the Mary Lucking Prize; the Cockle Prize shall be awarded for the next best performance in the Geography Tripos.

COLLEGE PRIZE A College Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, in any subject, who achieves a First Class result in examinations.

TOM COMFORT PRIZE Title The Tom Comfort prize was established in 2007 by the College in memory of Thomas James Comfort, who matriculated in 2004 and read Part 1A Economics, followed by Part 1B and Part II Social and Political Sciences. He died from a sudden illness at the end of the Lent Term in his final year, having made significant contributions to many aspects of College life. Eligibility The Tom Comfort Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, in any subject, taking into account both academic achievement and other contribution to College life.

CUTHBERT PRIZE Title The Cuthbert Prize is given from the income of a Fund established in honour of Professor Alan Cuthbert (Master 1990-99 and Sheild Professor of Pharmacology), by a gift from Professor Harry Margolius (Visiting Fellow1996 and Professor of Pharmacology in the Medical University of South Carolina), augmented by donations from former students of medicine and veterinary medicine and biological or zoological sciences in the College. Eligibility The Cuthbert Prize may be awarded to the best undergraduate in College in Part I of the Tripos in Medical and Veterinary Sciences.

THE K L DESAI PRIZE FUND Title The K L Desai Prize Fund was established in 2002 by a gift from his daughter Padma Desai and her husband Jagdish Bhagwati, in memory of her father, Kalidas Lalloobhai Desai, who read English at Fitzwilliam 1925-1927 and thereafter taught the subject at MTB College, Surat, India and also in honour of their daughter, Anuradha Bhagwati, who read English at Yale University. Eligibility The Padma Desai Prize shall be awarded annually to the undergraduate recording the highest academic excellence in Tripos and Preliminary examinations in English. A KL Desai Prize shall be awarded to the undergraduate having the best examination performance (after excluding the winner of the Padma Desai Prize) in each of the three Tripos and Preliminary years of study of English. An Anuradha Bhagwati Prize shall be awarded to a graduate student of English found sufficiently meritorious.

THE JOHN ETHERTON PRIZE Title The John Etherton prize was established in 2008 by a gift from Dr John Edward Etherton who read Medical Sciences (1974-1979) at Fitzwilliam College.

Eligibility The John Etherton Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who achieves a First

GENT PRIZE Title The Gent Prize was established in 1980 by Mrs Finbow, daughter of C E Gent, former member of the College. Eligibility The Gent Prize may be awarded preferably to an undergraduate reading Medicine or History or, failing there being suitable candidates, in any other subject.

JACK GOSSAGE PRIZE Title The Jack Gossage Prize is funded by a gift made in memory of his grandfather by Andrew Gossage, a member of Fitzwilliam College who read History from 1989 to1992. Eligibility The Jack Gossage prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has shown academic excellence in History or, failing there being suitable candidates, any other Arts subject.

THE JEAN AND ARTHUR HART PRIZE Title The Jean and Arthur Hart Prize was established in 2014 by a gift from Martin Hart and is named in memory of his parents. Martin read History and Management Studies at Fitzwilliam, 1984-1988. He was the first member of his family to attend university. Eligibility The Jean and Arthur Hart Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has shown academic excellence in the Music Tripos or, failing there being suitable candidates, any other subject.

HARVEY PRIZE

Title The Harvey Prize commemorates Mr Walter Harvey who was Assistant Censor and Bursar at Fitzwilliam House from 1925-43. Eligibility The Harvey Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate reading History.

THE PAT HIGGINBOTTOM PRIZE

Title The Pat Higginbottom Prize was established in 2006 by a gift from Mr Ronald George Higginbottom who read Geography at Fitzwilliam House, 1947 – 1949 in memory of his wife after sixty years together. Eligibility The Pat Higginbottom Prize may be awarded without restriction of subject.

THE HOUSTON PUTNAM LOWRY PRIZE

Title The Houston Putnam Lowry Prize Fund was established in 2001 by a gift from H P Lowry, sometime Chair of the International Law and World Peace Section of the Connecticut Bar Association, who took an LL M in International Law at the College in 1980-81. Eligibility A Houston Putnam Lowry Prize may be awarded for academic excellence in Law or any other subject, to any undergraduate or graduate student of the College. Value The number of Prizes shall be limited only by the funds available.

BARBARA HUMPHREY PRIZE Title The Humphrey Fund is provided by a gift made in 1997 by Mr H H Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933, read Geography and Law and obtained an LLB in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide: 1. The Barbara Humphrey Prize for Geography. 2. Two Humphrey Prizes without restriction of subject.

THE HUGH HUMPHREY FUND

Title The Hugh Humphrey Fund was established in 2009 through a gift made by the sons and daughter of the late Mr Hugh Haviland Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933. He read Geography (BA 1935) and Law and obtained an LLB in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide:

1) The Hugh Humphrey Prize for an undergraduate who achieves first class results without restriction of subject.

2) Awards to undergraduate or graduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study.

Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

IRVING PRIZE Title The Irving Prize was established in 2012 by Professor Ted Irving who was a student at Fitzwilliam between 1948-51 who went on to have a distinguished academic career in Geology, being awarded a ScD (Cantab) and being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

JOHNSON-JARY PRIZE Title The Johnson-Jary Prize was established in 1986 by a gift in memory of his mother from Dr C L Johnson, some time Scholar of the College, who read Agriculture from 1965-1968 and augmented by a legacy from Mr D Johnson (brother of Dr C L Johnson).. Eligibility Johnson-Jary Prizes may be awarded to undergraduates of the College who have shown academic excellence in Music, Biological Sciences or Law. BRIAN JONES PRIZE Title The Brian Jones Prize was established in 2010 by a gift from Mr Brian M Jones, a member of Fitzwilliam College who read Land Economy from 1947 to 1949. Eligibility The Brian Jones Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College achieving outstanding results in any part of the Land Economy Tripos.

THE RAY KELLY PRIZE Title The Ray Kelly prize was established in 2007 by a collective gift from the 1964 Fitzwilliam Modern Linguists in honour of Dr Ray Kelly, Life Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, to mark the esteem and affection in which they held him. Eligibility he Ray Kelly prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has shown academic excellence in Modern Languages.

THE LANDY PRIZE Title The Landy Prize was established in 2004 by a gift from Mr Barry Landy, a Life Fellow of the College, to mark 31 years of teaching Natural Sciences Part IB Mathematics for the College.

Eligibility The Landy Prize may be awarded to the best undergraduate of the College in Mathematics in Part IB of the Tripos in Natural Sciences.

VERA LETHBRIDGE PRIZE

Title The Vera Lethbridge Prize was established in 2015 by a gift from Professor Robert Lethbridge in order to honour his wife, Vera, and in recognition of her own contribution to the life and work of the College, particularly during his years of service as Tutor (1975-92), Senior Tutor (1982-92) and Master (2005-13). Eligibility The Vera Lethbridge Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has shown academic excellence, without restriction of subject.

EDWARD MILLER PRIZE Title The Edward Miller Prize was established in 2009 by a gift from Rosemarie Wertschek QC (Girton, 1971-72) in memory of, and in gratitude for, her time as a research student working with Dr Edward Miller, former Master of Fitzwilliam (1971-81). Eligibility The Edward Miller Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who has shown academic excellence in History. In the event of there being two eligible candidates of broadly equal merit; preference will be given to the one who has shown particular distinction in Medieval History, Dr Miller’s specialist field of study and research.

THE INGE NAISMITH PRIZE Title The Inge Naismith prize was established in 2008 by a gift from Mr Hugh Naismith, (Fitzwilliam House 1956-1958) in loving memory of his wife Inge. Eligibility The Inge Naismith Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who achieves a First in Medical Sciences Part IA or, failing there being suitable candidates, in Veterinary Medicine or Natural Sciences.

THE NEWTON PRIZES Title The Newton Prizes were established in 2007 by a gift from Russell Paul Newton (1983) who read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam. Eligibility The Newton Prizes shall be awarded to undergraduates of the College reading scientific disciplines, such as Natural Sciences or Engineering, who have shown academic excellence and, who in the opinion of the Master and the Tutors, have contributed significantly to College life. O B PASK PRIZE Title The O B Pask Prize was established in 2000 by a legacy of Barbara Mary Pask in memory of her late husband, O B Pask, who matriculated in 1920. PERREAU-SAUSSINE PRIZE Title The Prize was established by the Governing Body to honour the life and work of Dr Emile Perreau-Saussine (1972-2010), Fellow and College Lecturer in Social and Political Sciences, 2001-2010. Eligibility The Prize may be awarded to a student who achieves First Class Honours, or its equivalent, in any part of the PPS Tripos

DENNIS PRICE PRIZE Title The Dennis Price Prize is funded by a bequest from Mrs Phyllis Price in memory of her late husband, Edward Dennis Price, who read Modern and Medieval Languages at Fitzwilliam 1946-1949. Eligibility The prize may be awarded to an undergraduate reading Modern and Medieval Languages who achieves a First in their Tripos examinations.

THE QINETIQ PRIZES Title The QinetiQ Prizes were established in 2007 by a corporate gift from QinetiQ Group plc, the international defence and security technology company, which is committed to encouraging students to read science at university. Mr Graham Love (English 1972) and Mr Doug Webb (Geography and Management Studies 1979), both Members of the College, held executive director positions in the company as CEO and CFO respectively. Eligibility The QinetiQ Prizes may be awarded to undergraduates of the College reading scientific disciplines, such as Natural Sciences or Engineering. Value The number of QinetiQ Prizes awarded shall only be limited by the funds available.

RAWLINS PRIZE Title The Rawlins Prize, originally funded by Dr W K S Wallersteiner who read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam House 1936-39 commemorates Mr F I G Rawlins (Supervisor in Crystallography 1929-34 and Director of Studies in Natural Sciences 1932-34 at Fitzwilliam House).

Eligibility The Rawlins Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate who has the most distinguished performance of the year in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos, preferably in Chemistry.

THE AUDREY SIDDALL PRIZE Title The Audrey Siddall Prize was established in 2009 by a gift from Mr Gerald Siddall, (Fitzwilliam House 1949-1951) in loving memory of his wife Audrey Charlotte. Eligibility The Audrey Siddall Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who achieves first class results in any subject, with preference to those studying Economics or Experimental Psychology.

SKEPPER PRIZE

Title The Skepper Prize was established in 2010 by Mrs Meriel Rowson (née Skepper) who matriculated in 1980 and read Modern Languages at Fitzwilliam College. Eligibility The Skepper Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who has shown academic excellence in Modern Languages.

A V STACHULSKI PRIZE

Title The A V Stachulski Prize is funded by a gift made in 1996 by Dr A V Stachulski who read for the Natural Sciences Tripos from 1968-1971 and obtained a PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1976. Eligibility The A V Stachulski Prize shall be awarded to an undergraduate who has shown academic excellence in Part II Chemistry, preferably to one who intends to do research in Organic Chemistry. SIR JOHN STRATTON PRIZE Title The Sir John Stratton Prize is funded by a bequest from Sir John Stratton who read English and Archaeology and Anthropology at Fitzwilliam House 1929-32. Eligibility The Sir John Stratton Prize may be awarded without restriction of subject.

STUMBLES PRIZE Title The Stumbles Prize was established in 1978 in memory of R M Stumbles, a second year student reading Mathematics who did brilliantly well in his Tripos but died tragically that year. Eligibility The Stumbles Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate reading Mathematics.

THE SWINBURNE SENIOR PRIZE FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Title The Swinburne Senior Prize for Biological Sciences was established in 2003 by a donation from Dr K A Swinburne (1950) who read Medical Sciences at Fitzwilliam.

Eligibility The Swinburne Senior Prize for Biological Sciences shall be awarded annually to any undergraduate or graduate recording the highest academic excellence in Biological Sciences.

THATCHER PRIZES Title The Thatcher Prizes were established in 1977 by gifts from Professor G B Norcliffe, Mr Z K L Chojecki and Mr W O Rice for awards to be named after W S Thatcher (Censor of Fitzwilliam House 1924-54). Eligibility The Thatcher Prizes may be awarded without restriction of subject. Value The number of Thatcher Prizes awarded shall only be limited by the funds available.

TRETHEWEY PRIZES Title The Trethewey Prizes were established in 2014 by a gift from Richard Trethewey, who read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam from 1987-90 and completed his PhD at the College in 1993. Eligibility A maximum of four prizes will be awarded each academic year in recognition of First class results in each Part of the Natural Sciences Tripos.

R A WATCHMAN PRIZE Title The R A Watchman Prize was established in 1995 by a gift from Mr R A Watchman, Senior Bursar and Fellow of Jesus College, who read Mathematics at Fitzwilliam House 1948-51 and was one of the first Fitzwilliam post-war Wranglers. Eligibility The R A Watchman Prize may be awarded to the top Junior Members reading for the Mathematical Tripos.

A J WATSON PRIZE

Title The A J Watson Prize was established by the Governing Body in 1984 on the retirement of A J Watson (University Lecturer in Psychology, Fellow of Fitzwilliam 1964-1984) in recognition of his services to the College as Senior Tutor 1969-1982. Eligibility Preference will be given to an undergraduate studying either Psychology or Philosophy. If there are no candidates in this field of study, the prize will be awarded to another undergraduate at the discretion of the Tutors.

WELLINGS PRIZE Title The Wellings Prize was established in 1986 by a legacy from the Reverend Prebendary H H Wellings, who read History and Theology at Fitzwilliam House from 1917 to 1919, and died on 28 October 1985. Eligibility The Wellings Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who has shown academic excellence in an Arts subject.

WHITLOCK PRIZE

Title The Whitlock Prize is funded by a bequest from J W Whitlock who read Law at Fitzwilliam Hall 1920-23. Eligibility The prize may be awarded to an undergraduate reading Law.

THE PETER WYLLIE PRIZE Title The Peter Wyllie prize was established in 2007 by a gift from Mr Peter Murray Wyllie who read History (1982-1985) at Fitzwilliam College. Eligibility The Peter Wyllie prize may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College, who has shown academic excellence in History or Classics or, failing there being suitable candidates, any other Arts subject.

SUBJECT FUNDS AND OTHER ACADEMIC PRIZES

THE ADAMS ENGINEERING FUND Title The Adams Engineering Fund was established in 2016 by a donation from John and Joan Adams and their son, Christopher. John read Engineering at Fitzwilliam from 1958 to 1962. Eligibility The Adams Engineering Fund may be used to support the teaching and learning of Engineering at Fitzwilliam, according to College priorities. With respect to learning, income from the Fund shall be used at the discretion of the Director(s) of Studies in Engineering, with the approval of the Tutorial Committee and in accordance with guidelines established by that committee. With respect to teaching, income from the Fund shall be used to maintain and develop College teaching in Engineering under the authority of the College Committee. Value Income from the Adams Engineering Fund shall be used as detailed above. Any unspent income will be reinvested in the Adams Engineering Fund.

THE ARCHITECTURE FUND Regulations The Architecture Fund was established in 2016 by an initial gift from Glyn Davies who studied Architecture at Fitzwilliam, 1964-1967. The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Architecture in the College in connection with costs associated with their academic course, such as studio work or field trips. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be limited only by the funds available. The fund shall be used at the discretion of the Director of Studies in Architecture, with the approval of the Tutorial Committee, in accordance with guidelines established by that committee.

THE CHANDARIA ECONOMICS FUND Title The Chandaria Economics Fund was established in 2013 with a gift from Shamil Chandaria, who read Economics at the College from 1984 to 1987. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to support students of Economics and the activities of an Economics Society in the College. Value The income of the fund may be used at the discretion of the Director of Studies in Economics, with the approval of the Tutorial Committee and in accordance with guidelines established by that committee.

THE DIRECTOR OF STUDIES IN GEOGRAPHY FUND Title The Director of Studies in Geography Fund was established by the application of publishing royalties by Dr Stuart Lane (successively an undergraduate, PhD student, Research Fellow and Fellow of the College 1988 to 1999) on his appointment to the Chair of Physical Geography in the University of Leeds in 1999, augmented by donations from former students and teachers of Geography in the College. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Geography in the College in connection with their field trips, overseas dissertation research or with study skills courses. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Studies in Geography and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE JOHN & JENNY DUNCAN GEOGRAPHY FUND

Title The John and Jenny Duncan Geography Fund was established in 2016 by a donation from Dr John Stuart Duncan who read Geography at Fitzwilliam 1948 to 1951. Eligibility The John and Jenny Duncan Geography Fund may be used to

(i) Fund the John and Jenny Duncan Dissertation Prize of £100 for the Fitzwilliam candidate who obtains the highest mark for the dissertation required in Part II of the Geographical Tripos; (ii) Fund John and Jenny Duncan Awards to support undergraduate and graduate students of Geography with costs associated with field trips and dissertation research.

Value Income from the John and Jenny Duncan Geography Fund shall be used as detailed above. Any unspent income will be reinvested in the John and Jenny Duncan Geography Fund. The number and value of John and Jenny Duncan Awards for field trips and dissertation research shall be at the discretion of the Director(s) of Studies in Geography, with the approval of the Tutorial Committee and in accordance with guidelines established by that committee.

THE ENGINEERING FUND Title The Engineering Fund was established in 2004 by an appeal to members of the College who had read engineering. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Engineering in the College in connection with their field work, or to assist with provision of academic materials, including computers and textbooks.

Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Studies in Engineering and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund, preference being given to undergraduate students in the first instance.

EXCELECT RESEARCH AWARDS

Title The Excelect Research Awards were established in 2014 by Dr Kourosh Saeb-Parsy, who matriculated at Fitzwilliam College in 1993, qualified as a medical doctor, gained a PhD in Neuroscience in 2001, and was elected to a Fellowship in 2003. He was the MCR President in 1998/1999.

Method of Payment No monies are held by the College, and payments are made by Excelect Ltd, upon the recommendation of the Tutorial Committee, following consideration by the Directors of Studies in Pre-clinical and Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

Eligibility An Excelect Research Award may be awarded to pre-clinical or clinical students studying human or veterinary medicine at Fitzwilliam College, to support scientific research activities, according to guidelines agreed by the Tutorial Committee and the Donor. The recipients of the awards will be required to submit a short report on their sponsored activities within 6 weeks of completion.

Number of Awards Up to two awards to the value of £150 each will be offered by Excelect Ltd annually.

FITZWILLIAM ENGINEERS’ FUND Regulations The Fitzwilliam Engineers’ Fund was established in 2016 by a donation from Xiaoyang Xie who read Engineering at Fitzwilliam from 2006 to 2009. The Fitzwilliam Engineers’ Fund is an endowed fund, the income from which will be used to support Engineering at Fitzwilliam. Income from the Fund shall be used at the discretion of the Director(s) of Studies in Engineering, in consultation with Engineering Fellows and with the approval of the Tutorial Committee, in accordance with guidelines established by that committee. This may include, but not be restricted to: awards to support undergraduate and graduate students of Engineering with costs associated with their education, training and development; support for activities of an Engineering Society in the College; fund Engineering Prizes. Any unspent income will be reinvested in the Fitzwilliam Engineers’ Fund.

FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE IRANIAN STUDIES FUND Title The Fitzwilliam College Iranian Studies Fund was established in 2014 with a donation from Babak Eftekhari, who read Economics at the College between 1990 and 1998 (BA, MPhil and PhD).

Eligibility The Fund shall be used to support Iranian studies in the College. Value The capital and income of this expendable fund may be used in accordance with guidelines approved by the College Committee. Guidelines The fund may be used to support the following activities, which may vary over time: studentships, research, teaching, travel, Fellowship costs, conferences, cultural activities and public lectures. Activities may span the full subject range, and should engage with Iranian and Persian studies in the broadest sense.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY J R W ALEXANDER LAW BOOK AWARDS

Title The J R W Alexander Studentship was established in 1989 by the Fitzwilliam Society Trust to commemorate the name of the founder and first secretary and treasurer of the Fitzwilliam Society, J R W Alexander, CBE (1897-1985). 'Alex' as he was widely known read History and Law at Fitzwilliam and proceeded to the degrees of BA and LLB in 1924. Called to the Bar from the Inner Temple in 1925, he was successively Parliamentary Secretary to the Society of Incorporated Accountants and Arbitrators, Secretary to the Institution of Gas Engineers, President of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, President of the Institute of Arbitrators and Chairman of the London Court of Arbitrators. Value Students starting the LLM course or the MCL course as members of Fitzwilliam College will be awarded a Law Book Grant to the value of £100. This will be in the form of book tokens. No application is necessary.

THE LAW BOOK FUND

Title The Law Book Fund was established in 2003 by an appeal to members of the College who had read Law. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to provide textbooks for annual loan to students of Law in the College. Value The number and value of books purchased by the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Directors of Studies in Law, initially limited to core subject textbooks and thereafter shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE MATHEMATICS FUND Title The Mathematics Fund was established in 2007 by an appeal to Members of the College who had read Mathematics.

Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used primarily to support students of Mathematics in the College in connection with their second and third year computing projects by providing grants to individuals towards the purchase of laptop computers. Where the student has their own computer, grants will be provided for books or visits in connection with their studies. Value The value of each award should be a maximum of £300. The number of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Studies in Mathematics and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund, preference being given to students needing computers in the first instance.

CHRIS MARTIN THEATRE FUND Title The Chris Martin Theatre Fund was established in 2012 by a benefaction from Christopher Martin, who read English at Fitzwilliam College from 1976 to 1979.

Eligibility The Fund shall be used to support students of English in the College in attending the theatre.

Value The capital and income of the fund may be used at the discretion of the Director of Studies in English, with the approval of the Tutorial Committee and in accordance with guidelines established by that committee.

NATURAL SCIENCES FUND Title The Natural Sciences Subject Fund was established in 2013. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to support students of Natural Sciences and the activities of the Natural Sciences Society in the College. Value The income of the fund may be used at the discretion of the Directors of Studies in Natural Sciences, with the approval of the Tutorial Committee and in accordance with guidelines established by that committee.

RICHARD REGER CLASSICS FUND

Title The Richard Reger Classics Fund was established in 2012 with a gift from Richard Reger, who read Classics at the College from 1985 to 1988.

Eligibility The Fund shall be used to support students of Classics in the College.

THE BIBLICAL THEOLOGY PRIZE Title The Biblical Theology Prize Fund was established in 2006 by a gift from Professor Markus Bockmuehl, Fellow of Fitzwilliam College from 1993 to 2006, who served from time to time both as Director of Studies in Theology and as a Tutor and who was initially a University Lecturer in Theology, then Reader and subsequently holder of a personal Chair of Biblical and Early Christian Studies in the University, until he took up a Chair in the University of St Andrews.

Eligibility This Prize may be awarded for an outstanding dissertation in biblical theology (including either Old or New Testament theology), or failing that in any other area related to Christian theology or ethics, to any undergraduate or graduate student of the College. Value The value of a Biblical Theology Prize shall be £100.

BOURDEAU-REST PRIZE Title The Bourdeau-Rest Prize is funded by a gift made in 2001 by Mr P W Rest who read the Geography and Economics Triposes 1946-1949 in memory of his wife Jeanne-Marie Bourdeau-Rest. Eligibility The Bourdeau-Rest Prize may be awarded to an undergraduate who has shown meritorious progress in French literature. In making this award any factors which might have bearing upon the quality of a student’s progress may be taken into account. Value The value of the Bourdeau-Rest Prize shall be £100.

WILLIAM FRENCH PRIZE Title The William French prize is funded by a gift in 1939 from William French who read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam Hall (1887-90). Eligibility The William French prize may be awarded for encouragement and not for achievement, specifically in Chemistry and Plant Sciences, but not the Natural Sciences Tripos as such where Physics and Mechanics play a great part. Value The value of the William French Prize shall be £100.

GIBSON PRIZES Title The Gibson Prizes are funded by gifts made between 1889-96 by Dr Margaret D Gibson, the Oriental and New Testament Scholar and widow of Mr J Y Gibson (1826-86) who was a translator of Spanish. Eligibility The Gibson prizes may be awarded to undergraduates who show distinction in New Testament Greek. Value The value of the Gibson Prize shall be £100.

GIBSON ESSAY PRIZES Title Gibson Essay Prizes are funded by gifts made between 1889-96 by Dr Margaret D Gibson, the Oriental and New Testament Scholar. Eligibility A Gibson Prize may be awarded for an essay on the interpretation of the New Testament in which candidates should show knowledge of New Testament Greek. Notice of intention to submit an essay for a prize must be sent to the Master by the end of the second week of Full Easter Term. Number of Awards Two Gibson Essay Prizes may be awarded each year. Value The value of a Gibson Essay Prize shall be determined by the funds available each year.

GRADUATE TUTORS PRIZE FOR MPHIL A Graduate Tutors Prize for an MPhil may be awarded to a student of the College, in any subject, who achieves a distinction or equivalent (an overall mark of 75% or above). Value The value of a Graduate Tutors Prize for an MPhil shall be £150.

SIR JAMES HOLT PRIZE Title The Sir James Holt Prize was established in 2013 by the College in honour of Professor Sir James Holt, Professor of Medieval History (1978-1988), Master of Fitzwilliam (1981-88).

Eligibility The Sir James Holt Prize may be awarded to the undergraduate of the College who obtains the highest mark in their Part II dissertation, for History. Value The value of the Sir James Holt Prize shall be £100.

ILSLEY PRIZE Title The Ilsley Prize is funded by a bequest from Mrs E W Ilsley in 1973 in memory of her son Major P E Ilsley who read History at Fitzwilliam House 1939-41. After reading Part I History Major Ilsley entered the Army and served with distinction for five years. He returned to complete his degree and died in 1948 at the age of 26. Eligibility An Ilsley Prize shall be awarded to a student who, in the opinion of the Master and Tutors, has shown meritorious progress. In making this award other factors which might have bearing upon the quality of a student's progress may also be taken into account. Number of Prizes Up to two Ilsley Prizes may be awarded each year. One of these shall be in History. Value The value of the Ilsley Prize shall be £100.

THE LANDY PRIZE FOR PROGRESS Title The Landy Prize for Progress was established in 2004 by a gift from Mr Barry Landy, a Life Fellow of the College, to mark 31 years of teaching Natural Sciences Part IB Mathematics for the College. Eligibility The Landy Prize for Progress may be awarded to an undergraduate of the College who has shown the most meritorious progress in Mathematics Part IB of the Tripos in Natural Sciences.

Value The value of the Landy Prize for Progress shall be £50.

DAVID PEARL PRIZE Title The David Pearl Prize Fund was established in 2003 by a gift from an anonymous benefactor as a tribute to the work of His Honour Judge David Pearl, a Life Fellow of the College. Eligibility The David Pearl Prize may be awarded to the graduate student of Fitzwilliam College achieving the highest academic excellence in the LLM. Value The value of the David Pearl Prize shall be £100.

R N WALTERS PRIZE Title The R N Walters Prize commemorates the late R N Walters (Tutor at Fitzwilliam House and Senior Tutor at Fitzwilliam College 1966-67).

UNDERGRADUATE MAINTENANCE FUNDS

The College is able to offer assistance with living costs, based on an assessment of the individual circumstances of undergraduate students. Awards are made, on application,

each Lent Term to a maximum of £750 per annum.

THE HOWARD ANDERSON FUND Title The Howard Anderson Hardship Fund was established in 2012 with a bequest from Mr Howard Anderson, who read Philosophy at the College from 1967 to 1970. Eligibility A Howard Anderson bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help arising from hardship. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

SIMON CROSBY BURSARY FUND Title The Simon Crosby Fund was established in 2012 with a gift from Dr Simon Crosby, who was a Fellow of the College from 1995 to 2000.

Eligibility A Simon Crosby bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help.

Value The number and value of Simon Crosby bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

THE E D DAVIES FUND Title The E D Davies Fund was established in 1995 by a bequest from Mr E D Davies (BA 1931) who read Geography and History at Fitzwilliam House between 1928 and 1931. The income of the fund shall be allocated half to undergraduates and half to graduates as follows:

(a) one tenth of the total allocation to provide awards for music if suitable candidates present themselves. (b) the remainder to provide

(i) Bursaries to students deemed by the Tutors to be in financial need. (ii) Scholarships for graduate students. (iii) Travel awards

Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor for a grant from this fund to assist with his/her musical activities. Financial assistance is also available to groups of three or more players (in which at least half of the group should be members of Fitzwilliam) for professional coaching for the preparation of works for Fitzwilliam College concerts. Junior Members may apply for Bursaries through their Tutor. The conditions of eligibility for Scholarships are listed separately.

Title The Fitzwilliam College Bursary Fund was established in 2015, incorporating funds previously held as the College Hardship Fund.

Eligibility A bursary from the Fund may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial assistance.

Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be limited only by the funds available.

FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE STUDENT SUPPORT FUND

Title The Fitzwilliam College Student Support Fund was established in 2015 with bequests from alumni of Fitzwilliam House and Fitzwilliam College. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide assistance to any student of the College who is in financial need. Value The income of the fund may be used at the discretion of the Senior Tutor, in accordance with guidelines established by the Tutorial Committee.

THE GOLDMAN SACHS FUND Title The Goldman Sachs Fund was established in 2010 as a result of the generosity of Peter Selman (1991), secured through Goldman Sachs, the global investment bank founded in 1869, the same year as Fitzwilliam. Eligibility The primary purpose of the Fund is to give financial assistance to Home and EU undergraduates with limited means. Value Goldman Sachs Bursaries will be awarded at the discretion of the Master and Tutors. Their value will be set annually. In order to encourage applications to Cambridge from candidates with limited means, the Awards will be made on admission and shall be renewable, subject to satisfactory progress, for the period of the holders’ undergraduate degree-course. The number of award-holders shall only be limited by the available income from the Fund. Reporting The College will report annually to Goldman Sachs on the progress of its named award-holders.

Guidelines The Fund shall be administered by Fitzwilliam College according to agreed guidelines, including details of the application procedure. The terms of the Fund shall not be changed without the explicit agreement of Fitzwilliam College and Goldman Sachs.

THE GEOFFREY & PAULINE HARRISON FUND

Title The Geoffrey and Pauline Harrison Fund was established in 2014 by a gift from Mr Geoffrey Harrison (1955), who read Natural Sciences. Eligibility Awards from the fund may be made to any undergraduate of the College suffering financial hardship. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE JEAN AND ARTHUR HART FUND Title The Jean and Arthur Hart Fund was established in 2014 by a gift from Martin Hart and is named in memory of his parents. Martin read History and Management Studies at Fitzwilliam, 1984-1988. He was the first member of his family to attend university. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to any undergraduates of the College who are in need of financial support. Value The number and value of awards shall be limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund.

THE DICK HAYWOOD FUND Title The Dick Haywood Fund was established in 1994 by a benefaction from Mrs Sylvia Haywood to commemorate the life and work of her husband. Richard W Haywood read Mechanical Sciences at Fitzwilliam (1936-1939) and was Director of Studies in Engineering and a Fellow of the College from 1963-1970. The income of the Fund shall be used to promote peaceful international relations and understanding. Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor to the Master and Tutors for a bursary or general financial assistance for studies in the field of international relations. Priority will be given to students who wish to participate in the University's Global Security Programme. A statement of the proposed course of study and estimated expenses should be included.

The number of bursaries awarded and the amount of financial assistance given shall be limited only by the income of the fund in a given academical year, unless otherwise directed by the benefactor.

THE HOUSTON PUTNAM LOWRY FUND Title The Houston Putnam Lowry Fund was established in 2001 by a gift from H P Lowry, sometime Chair of the International Law and World Peace Section of the Connecticut Bar Association, who took an LL M in International Law at the College in 1980-81. Eligibility Award(s) from the Fund may be made to any undergraduate or graduate student of the College selected by the Tutorial Committee. The Houston Putnam Lowry Prize shall be awarded annually from the Fund. Value The number and value of awards shall be limited only by income of the fund.

BARBARA HUMPHREY FUND Title The Humphrey Fund is provided by a gift made in 1997 by Mr H H Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933, read Geography and Law and obtained an LL.B in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide awards to graduate or undergraduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE HUGH HUMPHREY FUND Title The Hugh Humphrey Fund was established in 2009 through a gift made by the sons and daughter of the late Mr Hugh Haviland Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933. He read Geography and Law (BA 1935) and obtained an LLB in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide:

1) The Hugh Humphrey Prize for an undergraduate who achieves first class results without restriction of subject.

2) Awards to undergraduate or graduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study.

Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE ILSLEY FUND

Title The Ilsley Fund was established by a benefaction from Mrs E H Ilsley in 1965 in memory of her nephew, Major P E Ilsley, who read History at Fitzwilliam House (1939-41). After reading Part I History Major Ilsley entered the Army and served with distinction for five years. He returned to complete his degree and died in 1948 at the age of 26. The income of the Fund shall be used "for the benefit of students reading History." Eligibility Any undergraduate in the College reading History may apply through his/her Director of Studies to the Tutorial Committee for a grant from the Fund for financial assistance to help with any aspects of their studies.

ISAAC NEWTON FUND The Isaac Newon Fund is for College Maintenance and is supported by the Isaac Newton Trust, Trinity College. Awards are made to Undergraduates of the College who are suffering from financial hardship.

JOHNSON-JARY HARDSHIP FUND Title The Johnson-Jary Hardship Fund was established in 1993 by a gift to the College from Mr D J Johnson (brother of Dr C L Johnson, sometime scholar of the College, who read Agriculture from 1965 to 1968). Eligibility Awards from the Fund may be made to any undergraduate student of the College suffering financial hardship. GLYN JONES FUND Title The Glyn Jones Fund was established in 2014 by a gift from Glyn Jones who studied Engineering at Fitzwilliam, 1986-1989. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide bursaries to Home students of the College, who are in need of financial support, studying in the areas of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mathematics. Value The number and value of awards shall be at the discretion of the Tutors, according to guidelines agreed with the Donor, and limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund.

Title The Marjorie Latham Fund was established in 2015 with a bequest from Mrs Marjorie Latham, whose son, John Latham, read MML at Fitzwilliam from 1975 to 1978. Eligibility The fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to any student of the College who has suffered the loss of a parent; although if no such student is identified, assistance may be offered at the discretion of the Tutors to any student in need of financial support. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

GRAHAM NUTTER FUND Title The Graham Nutter Fund was established in 2002 by a gift from Mr G F Nutter, who read Geography at the College 1966 to 1969.

Eligibility A Graham Nutter bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help arising from hardship or in connection with travel for academic purposes.

Value The number and value of Graham Nutter bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

EDGAR PALMER FUND Title A gift to the University from Miss D V Crisp was made in 1963, supplemented by a benefaction to the College in 1987, in memory of her brother-in-law Dr Edgar Palmer, who came to this country from Australia and was a student at Fitzwilliam House. A fund was established to benefit members of Fitzwilliam House undertaking post-graduate study or research in medicine, or in any allied biological subject. The income of the Fund shall be applied by the Master and Tutors from time to time to make grants for research or travel, or for such other purposes as they think fit. Eligibility Any graduate of a University of the British Commonwealth who is a member of the College shall be eligible for an award from the Fund, but preference shall be given to such graduates who are citizens of Australia.

DONALD M PARREN TRUST FUND Title The Donald M Parren Trust Fund was established in 2001 by a bequest from D M Parren, who read English and History at Fitzwilliam House 1924 to 1927.

HIRST PLAYER FUND

The income from the Fund established in memory of Eric Noel Player and Wilfrid Bertram Hirst (both Fitzwilliam Hall 1911-14) shall be used to provide bursaries and studentships for men or women, preferably ordinands, reading for a Degree or a Diploma in Theology. Candidates must have been admitted or be candidates for admission to membership of the College. Preference will be given to those who either have taken or are intending to take Holy Orders in a Christian Church which is a member of the World Council of Churches. Bursaries Up to 10% of the annual income of the Fund may be used by the Master and Tutors to award bursaries to deserving candidates as defined in Regulation 2 in order to enable them to attend particular conferences or courses or to undertake specified projects connected with their training. Nominations for such awards shall be made by the candidate's Tutor.

JOHN RICAHRDS FUND Title The John Richards Fund was established in 2015 by a gift from Gary Richards and is named in honour of his father. Gary read Law and Economics at Fitzwilliam, 1974-1977.

Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to any undergraduate of the College in need of financial support, with a preference for the allocation of awards to first year students studying STEM subjects. Awards may be renewable.

Value The number and value of awards shall be limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund.

THE PRESCOTT FUND Title The Jeremy Prescott Fund was established by Mr Jeremy Prescott (matriculated in 1967) in 1989 and subsequently augmented by further benefactions from him. Mr Prescott read Economics as a mature student at Fitzwilliam. Eligibility The Fund exists to give financial assistance to any undergraduate or postgraduate student, but preference will be given to those who entered Fitzwilliam not less than three years after finishing their secondary education.

SMITHKLINE BEECHAM SUBSISTENCE FUND

Title The Smithkline Beecham Subsistence Fund was established in 1998 by a benefaction to the College from Smithkline Beecham plc. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide subsistence grants for overseas graduate and undergraduate students of the College who are not normally resident in the United Kingdom. Value The number and value of grants from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE MARY STEVENS FUND

Title The Mary Stevens Fund was established by a benefaction from Mr R V Stevens (BA 1953) in memory of his wife, Mrs Mary Stevens. The income of the Fund shall be used to provide Mary Stevens Bursaries up to a maximum value specified by the Governing Body from time to time which may be awarded by the Master and Tutors to unmarried undergraduate members of the College. Eligibility A Mary Stevens Bursary shall be awarded to an unmarried undergraduate whose financial circumstances are such that he or she needs assistance for the payment of tuition fees or maintenance charges. The financial circumstances of the person shall be the main criterion but a candidate's Tutor should also certify that he or she is someone of academic ability and potential. A Mary Stevens Bursary should be regarded as a supplement to rather than a substitute for any loan which an undergraduate may have taken out under the Government's Student Loans Scheme. The number of Bursaries awarded shall be limited only by the income of the Fund in a given academical year.

THE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES FUND The Student Opportunities Fund was established in 2009 through donations primarily from former students of the College. The Fund shall be used to provide assistance to junior members of the College, directly or indirectly, in taking advantage of academic or extra-curricular opportunities. The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund, all of which shall normally be disbursed in the year of donation.

TUTORS' FUND Purpose Financial assistance can be given from the Tutors' Fund, in cases of hardship, by application through a student's Tutor. In addition, the Tutors' Fund may be used, at the discretion of the Master and the Tutors for any purpose they think fit.

MARY THATCHER & GODFREY KELLY FUND Title The Mary Thatcher and Godfrey Kelly Bursary Fund was established in 2012 by a gift from Mary’s friend, Mr Godfrey Kelly, who read Law at the College from 1948 to 1952 and lodged with the Thatcher family. Eligibility A Mary Thatcher and Godfrey Kelly bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help. Value The number and value of awards shall be limited to the annual income of the Fund.

UNDERGRADUATE HARDSHIP Awards are made to Undergraduates of the College who are suffering from financial hardship. Funded by an annual donation from the Bell, Abbott & Barnes Fund.

WJ VEALE FUND

Title The WJ Veale Fund was established in 2013 by a benefaction from Mrs Gweneth B Veale in memory of her husband, Mr William J Veale (Geography, 1925). Eligibility Awards from the fund made be made to any student of the College in need of financial assistance. Value The number and value of awards shall be limited to the annual income of the Fund.

PETER WILSON ESTATES GAZETTE FUND Title The fund (£400,000) was established in 2013 by Mrs Audrey Wilson in memory of Mr Peter Wilson, owner of the Estates Gazette (1972-1991)) and Honorary Fellow and Benefactor of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. It was established to encourage expertise in Land Economy that will be put to good use in the wider world in the future.

The income from the fund (but not the capital) is to be used to support postgraduate study in Land Economy (or equivalent subjects) at Fitzwilliam College.

Awards made from the fund shall be known as "Peter Wilson Estates Gazette Scholarships".

The terms of the fund shall not be changed without the explicit agreement of both Fitzwilliam College and Mrs Audrey Wilson, or her legal representatives, whether attorneys or executors (Representative), for so long as it is reasonably possible to identify them.

Regulations Awards shall be based upon academic merit.

The number and value of individual awards shall be at the discretion of the Tutors, on the recommendations of the Graduate Tutor and Director of Studies in Land Economy, and subject to the following order of priority:

4. Masters students – awards to be at a level of not less than £3,000 per person to be used towards the cost of tuition fees or maintenance during their course of study.

5. PhD students – awards to be at a level of not less than £1,000 per year and spread evenly over the period of study.

6. Undergraduate students in their final year who also demonstrate financial need. Awards of up to £4,000 but normally £3,000, may be used to offset fees or maintenance costs; generally undergraduates would only be expected to benefit where an award will encourage them to proceed on to a Masters' degree.

The names and academic progress of students to whom awards are made shall be advised to Mrs Wilson (or her Representative) and to the authorised officials of the Estates Gazette.

The holders of Peter Wilson Estates Gazette Scholarships may be required to contribute to media coverage promoting the benefits of the Scholarships. Holders will have the opportunity to apply for available internships at the Estates Gazette.

There is to be no conflict with other awards. In the event of other funds being made available for similar purposes in the future, the regulations are to be reviewed in the light of the criteria for other such awards.

These regulations may be amended by the Governing Body of the College should circumstances require, after consultation with Mrs Audrey Wilson or her Representative, and the authorised representative of the Estates Gazette.

THE LOUIS WONG FUND Title The Louis Wong Fund was established in 2014 by a gift from Louis Chi Kong Wong who read Engineering at Fitzwilliam 1981-1984. Eligibility This expendable fund shall be used to provide bursaries to home and overseas undergraduates of the College who are in need of financial support. Value The number and value of Louis Wong bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

GRADUATE MAINTENANCE FUNDS

The College is able to offer assistance with living costs, based on an assessment of the individual circumstances of graduate students. Awards are made, on application,

to a maximum of £750 per annum.

Eligibility A Howard Anderson bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help arising from hardship. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

COLLEGE HARDSHIP

Awarded to Junior Members of the College who are suffering from financial hardship.

SIMON CROSBY BURSARY FUND Title The Simon Crosby Fund was established in 2012 with a gift from Dr Simon Crosby, who was a Fellow of the College from 1995 to 2000.

Eligibility A Simon Crosby bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help.

Value The number and value of Simon Crosby bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

THE E D DAVIES FUND Title The E D Davies Fund was established in 1995 by a bequest from Mr E D Davies (BA 1931) who read Geography and History at Fitzwilliam House between 1928 and 1931. The income of the fund shall be allocated half to undergraduates and half to graduates as follows:

(a) one tenth of the total allocation to provide awards for music if suitable candidates present themselves.

(b) the remainder to provide (i) Bursaries to students deemed by the Tutors to be in financial need. (ii) Scholarships for graduate students. (iii) Travel awards

Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor for a grant from this fund to assist with his/her musical activities. Financial assistance is also available to groups of three or more players (in which at least half of the group should be members of Fitzwilliam) for professional coaching for the preparation of works for Fitzwilliam College concerts. Junior Members may apply for Bursaries through their Tutor. The conditions of eligibility for Scholarships are listed separately.

Title The Fitzwilliam College Student Support Fund was established in 2015 with bequests from alumni of Fitzwilliam House and Fitzwilliam College. Value The income of the fund may be used at the discretion of the Senior Tutor, in accordance with guidelines established by the Tutorial Committee.

THE DICK HAYWOOD FUND Title The Dick Haywood Fund was established in 1994 by a benefaction from Mrs Sylvia Haywood to commemorate the life and work of her husband. Richard W Haywood read Mechanical Sciences at Fitzwilliam (1936-1939) and was Director of Studies in Engineering and a Fellow of the College from 1963-1970. The income of the Fund shall be used to promote peaceful international relations and understanding. Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor to the Master and Tutors for a bursary or general financial assistance for studies in the field of international relations. Priority will be given to students who wish to participate in the University's Global Security Programme. A statement of the proposed course of study and estimated expenses should be included. The number of bursaries awarded and the amount of financial assistance given shall be limited only by the income of the fund in a given academical year, unless otherwise directed by the benefactor.

THE HOUSTON PUTNAM LOWRY FUND Title The Houston Putnam Lowry Fund was established in 2001 by a gift from H P Lowry, sometime Chair of the International Law and World Peace Section of the Connecticut Bar Association, who took an LL M in International Law at the College in 1980-81. Eligibility Award(s) from the Fund may be made to any undergraduate or graduate student of the College selected by the Tutorial Committee. The Houston Putnam Lowry Prize shall be awarded annually from the Fund. Value The number and value of awards shall be limited only by income of the fund.

THE HUGH HUMPHREY FUND Title The Hugh Humphrey Fund was established in 2009 through a gift made by the sons and daughter of the late Mr Hugh Haviland Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933. He read Geography and Law (BA 1935) and obtained an LLB in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide awards to undergraduate or graduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study.

Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE ILSLEY FUND

Title The Ilsley Fund was established by a benefaction from Mrs E H Ilsley in 1965 in memory of her nephew, Major P E Ilsley, who read History at Fitzwilliam House (1939-41). After reading Part I History Major Ilsley entered the Army and served with distinction for five years. He returned to complete his degree and died in 1948 at the age of 26. The income of the Fund shall be used "for the benefit of students reading History." Eligibility Any undergraduate in the College reading History may apply through his/her Director of Studies to the Tutorial Committee for a grant from the Fund for financial assistance to help with any aspects of their studies.

Title The O B Pask Research Fund was established in 2000 by a legacy of Barbara Mary Pask in memory of her late husband, O B Pask, who matriculated in 1920. Value The number and value of Stachulski-Dudding Bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

MARY THATCHER & GODFREY KELLY FUND Title The Mary Thatcher and Godfrey Kelly Bursary Fund was established in 2012 by a gift from Mary’s friend, Mr Godfrey Kelly, who read Law at the College from 1948 to 1952 and lodged with the Thatcher family. UNDERGRADUATE TRAVEL AWARDS

Each undergraduate may apply for travel awards to a maximum value of £400 per annum.

Individual awards are limited to £250 if the travel is not related to examination requirements, and £150 if unrelated to Tripos.

Awards are made, on application, each term.

Recipients are asked to submit a report, by the division of the term following the award.

1912 TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP Title The College may award a number of Travel Scholarships from a Fund established in 1912 following an appeal to Fitzwilliam men to provide funds for Awards previously given by the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers. Eligibility Travel Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Master and Tutors, having regard to the level of individual initiative and the academic merit of the project proposed. The prime purpose of such Awards is to enable an undergraduate to carry out a project abroad in the Long Vacation which is directly linked to his or her academic work. No-one who has already received a 1912 Travel Scholarship is eligible to be a candidate. Value A 1912 Travel Scholarship shall have a value up to £250.

CAMPBELL FUND Title The Campbell Fund was established in 2013 by a gift from Ron Fondiller, who read Law at Fitzwilliam between 1974 and 1976, and is named in memory of his grandparents, Sir Charles and Lady Campbell. Eligibility Awards from the fund may be made to any Theology student in need of financial assistance in order to undertake community service or educational activities in the UK or abroad. Awards will be made by the Tutorial Committee on the recommendation of the Director of Studies and Tutor. Value The number and value of Campbell Awards shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

JOHN COLES BURSARY FUND Title The John Coles Bursary Fund was established in 1998 by a benefaction to the College from Professor John Coles, Honorary and Life Fellow of Fitzwilliam College. Eligibility The Fund shall be used for the award of bursaries to undergraduate and graduate students to support periods of study or work outside the United Kingdom which is related to their degree course and / or research. Bursaries shall not normally be awarded to cover the cost of travel to a student’s country of birth or residence, nor to students on one year courses or in their final year. Value The number and value of bursaries shall be at the discretion of the Master and Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

COLLEGE TRAVEL AWARDS Eligibility The College may make a number of grants to enable undergraduates to pursue projects of an educational nature both at home and abroad. Grants from this Fund will be made at the discretion of the Master and Tutors, having regard to the merit of the proposed project. These need not necessarily be directly related to a student's course of study, but priority may be given to those whose project is eligible for support from the Vacation Study Grant Fund, but whose costs cannot fully be met by it. Any previous recipient of such financial support will not be eligible to receive a further College Travel Award in the vacation after he or she has graduated.

CUTHBERT-EDWARDS FUND Title The Cuthbert Fund was established in honour of Professor Alan Cuthbert (Master 1990-99 and Sheild Professor of Pharmacology), by a gift from Professor Harry Margolius (Visiting Fellow1996 and Professor of Pharmacology in the Medical University of South Carolina), augmented by donations from former students of medicine and veterinary medicine and biological or zoological sciences in the College. The Fund was re-named, with the consent of Professor Cuthbert in 2004, following the death of Dr Anthony Edwards (Matriculated at Fitzwilliam House 1955, Fellow 1963-2003 Director of Studies in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine 1972-83 and 2002-05, in whose honour further donations from his students were made to the Fund. Eligibility The income of the Fund (after providing for the Cuthbert Prize) shall be used to support medical or veterinary electives and other medical or veterinary educational objectives (including travel) of current or former undergraduate or graduate students of the College prior to their entry on the Medical Register or the Veterinary Register. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE E D DAVIES FUND Title The E D Davies Fund was established in 1995 by a bequest from Mr E D Davies (BA 1931) who read Geography and History at Fitzwilliam House between 1928 and 1931. The income of the fund shall be allocated half to undergraduates and half to graduates as follows:

(a) one tenth of the total allocation to provide awards for music if suitable candidates present themselves. (b) the remainder to provide

(i) Bursaries to students deemed by the Tutors to be in financial need. (ii) Scholarships for graduate students. (iii) Travel awards

Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor for a grant from this fund to assist with his/her musical activities. Financial assistance is also available to groups of three or more players (in which at least half of the group should be members of Fitzwilliam) for professional coaching for the preparation of works for Fitzwilliam College concerts. Junior Members may apply for Bursaries through their Tutor. The conditions of eligibility for Scholarships are listed separately.

THE ENGINEERING FUND Title The Engineering Fund was established in 2004 by an appeal to members of the College who had read engineering. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Engineering in the College in connection with their field work, or to assist with provision of academic materials, including computers and textbooks. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Studies in Engineering and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund, preference being given to undergraduate students in the first instance.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES FUND

Title The Fund was established in 2007 by a gift from Sally Benthall (née Ranger) who read Geography at Fitzwilliam [BA 1984].

Eligibility Both undergraduates and postgraduates engaged in academic study related to Environmental Studies with a preference for those working in the areas of Plant Science, Geography, Conservation Biology, Ecology and Zoology.

Value Awards shall be made by the Master and Tutors. The value of awards from the Fund shall normally be at the level of other College support for academic projects, but the Tutorial Committee will have the power to exercise discretion in this respect. Reporting Those who receive financial assistance from the Fund are required to provide a report on the purpose and outcome of awards. Such reports may be forwarded to donors to the Fund.

FLIGHTBOOKERS STUDY FUND Title The Flightbookers Study Fund was established by a benefaction from Mr D Dhamija (BA 1974) who read Law at the College from 1971-74. The income of the Fund shall be used to support Junior Members undertaking academic projects abroad. Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply for a grant from the Fund. Grants will be made at the discretion of the Master and Tutors having regard to the merit of the proposed project.

THE DIRECTOR OF STUDIES IN GEOGRAPHY FUND Title The Director of Studies in Geography Fund was established by the application of publishing royalties by Dr Stuart Lane (successively an undergraduate, PhD student, Research Fellow and Fellow of the College 1988 to 1999) on his appointment to the Chair of Physical Geography in the University of Leeds in 1999, augmented by donations from former students and teachers of Geography in the College. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Geography in the College in connection with their field trips, overseas dissertation research or with study skills courses. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Studies in Geography and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE STANLEY AND ILENE GOLD TRAVEL FUND Title The Stanley and Ilene Gold Travel Fund was established in 2009 by a generous gift from the Gold Family Charitable Foundation, at the instance of Mr Stanley P Gold (matriculated 1967), who read for a Diploma in Comparative Legal Studies at the College. The gift was made in recognition of the “formative influence” of the opportunity afforded to Mr Gold to travel from the USA to spend a year at Fitzwilliam. The Foundation originally established the Gold Travel Fund in 1992 and has subsequently added to it on a regular basis. The income of the Fund shall be used to support Junior Members undertaking academic projects abroad.

THE DICK HAYWOOD FUND Title The Dick Haywood Fund was established in 1994 by a benefaction from Mrs Sylvia Haywood to commemorate the life and work of her husband. Richard W Haywood read Mechanical Sciences at Fitzwilliam (1936-1939) and was Director of Studies in Engineering and a Fellow of the College from 1963-1970. The income of the Fund shall be used to promote peaceful international relations and understanding. Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor to the Master and Tutors for a bursary or general financial assistance for studies in the field of international relations. Priority will be given to students who wish to participate in the University's Global Security Programme. A statement of the proposed course of study and estimated expenses should be included. The number of bursaries awarded and the amount of financial assistance given shall be limited only by the income of the fund in a given academical year, unless otherwise directed by the benefactor.

BARBARA HUMPHREY FUND

Title The Humphrey Fund is provided by a gift made in 1997 by Mr H H Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933, read Geography and Law and obtained an LL.B in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide awards to graduate or undergraduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE HUGH HUMPHREY FUND Title The Hugh Humphrey Fund was established in 2009 through a gift made by the sons and daughter of the late Mr Hugh Haviland Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933. He read Geography (BA 1935) and Law and obtained an LLB in 1938. Subject The Fund shall be used to provide:

1) The Hugh Humphrey Prize for an undergraduate who achieves first class results without restriction of subject.

2) Awards to undergraduate or graduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study.

THE LAND ECONOMY FUND Title The Land Economy Fund was established in 2005 by an appeal to members of the College who had read Land Economy, Estate Management or Agriculture. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Land Economy in the College in connection with their field trips, dissertation research or to assist in the provision of academic materials in connection with their course. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Studies in Land Economy and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund, except that in the years 2005-06 to 2007-08, grants up to £250 per annum (less the income of the Fund for the year) may be made from the capital of the Fund.

THE ILSLEY FUND Title The Ilsley Fund was established by a benefaction from Mrs E H Ilsley in 1965 in memory of her nephew, Major P E Ilsley, who read History at Fitzwilliam House (1939-41). After reading Part I History Major Ilsley entered the Army and served with distinction for five years. He returned to complete his degree and died in 1948 at the age of 26. The income of the Fund shall be used "for the benefit of students reading History." Eligibility Any undergraduate in the College reading History may apply through his/her Director of Studies to the Tutorial Committee for a grant from the Fund for financial assistance to help with any aspects of their studies.

THE MML FUND Title The MML Travel Fund was established in 2003, in celebration of the 80th birthday of Dr Ray Kelly, Director of Studies in MML 1952-68, Fellow 1963-81 and Life Fellow thereafter, Tutor 1955-81, Bursar 1960-81 and President of the College 1978-81, by an appeal to members of the College, who had read Modern and Medieval Languages. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to support students of Modern and Mediaeval Languages in the College with their year abroad, or in providing academic materials in connection with their courses. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Directors of Studies in MML and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

GRAHAM NUTTER FUND Title The Graham Nutter Fund was established in 2002 by a gift from Mr G F Nutter, who read Geography at the College 1966 to 1969.

Eligibility A Graham Nutter bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help arising from hardship or in connection with travel for academic purposes.

Value The number and value of Graham Nutter bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

THE LEONARD RADFORD TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS Title These scholarships are named in memory of Mr Leonard K Radford, formerly Director of Education for Guernsey and a friend of Mr Hubert P Walker (BA 1937). Mr Walker read Geography at Fitzwilliam House and established the Fund in 1989, augmented by further gifts in 1990 and 1991 to support these scholars. Eligibility Preference will be given to undergraduates pursuing projects related to the Geography Tripos.

THE RITTNER NIEDERSTE-HOLLENBERG FUND Title The Rittner Niederste-Hollenberg Fund was established in 2013 by a gift from Mr Hermann Niederste-Hollenberg, and Dr David Bowyer, Fellow (1975-2002) and, subsequently, Life Fellow of the College. The Fund is named in memory of Mr Niederste-Hollenberg’s great cousin, Frau Gisela Rittner. Eligibility Awards from the fund may be made to any member of (or visitor to) the College in support of academic activities within Europe (including travel for educational purposes). Preference may be given to graduates and for the purpose of facilitating academic interchange with Germany. Awards will be made by the Tutorial Committee on the recommendation of the Directors of Studies and Tutors. Value The number and value of Rittner Niederste-Hollenberg Awards shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

SAILBRIDGE SPECIAL PROJECT AWARDS

Title

The Sailbridge Special Project Awards were established in 2016 through a donation from Mr Philip Behenna (Modern and Medieval Languages, 1985–1989) to encourage students to undertake projects of environmental, charitable, intellectual or entrepreneurial value, which will broaden their experience and have a positive impact. The Awards are named in recognition of Mr Behenna’s mentors, Lawrence Sail, his teacher at Exeter School, who taught him the power of

imagination, and Robert Lethbridge, his supervisor at Fitzwilliam College who inspired him to persevere. Eligibility A Sailbridge Special Project Award may be made to any Junior Member of the College with the exception of those in the final year of their course. Value The number and value of Sailbridge Special Project Awards made from this expendable fund shall be determined by an awarding panel according to the numbers and quality of the proposals. Any funds not disbursed will be carried over to the following year. Awards are not normally intended to cover the full costs of a project; where appropriate, applicants should demonstrate that they have applied for complementary funding from other sources. Procedure If funds are available, awards will be advertised from October each year. Students should apply via the Tutorial Office by the advertised deadlines. Applications should include a summary (in no more than 200 words) of the significance and value of the project, and a high-level bulleted list of budget items (on a single page), showing how the award would be used and indicating any other sources of income for the project. A shortlist will be agreed by the Tutors and the final selection made by a panel of three assessors: Mr Behenna, the Senior Tutor, and one other Fellow of the College (who should be selected by Mr Behenna and the Tutorial Committee, for a renewable period of three years). Awards may be subject to the provision of additional information, for example evidence of a sensible assessment of the risks attached to a project.

MARK SAVAGE TRAVEL AWARD Title The Mark Savage Travel Award is funded by the parents and other close relatives of Mark Edward Graham Savage who was a mathematics student at Fitzwilliam College for the academic year 1999-2000 and who died in a road crash on 1st August 2000. Eligibility Awards from the Fund may be made to any undergraduate student of the College wishing to travel abroad whether to further their academic studies or undertake voluntary work or other study. A successful applicant will be expected to contribute a brief, informal account of their travel to the Fitzwilliam Journal. Value The number of awards shall be limited only by the funds available.

STRATTON AWARDS Title The College may make a number of grants (up to a maximum of £200) from a fund endowed by the late Sir John Stratton to enable undergraduates to pursue academic projects abroad during the vacation.

THE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES FUND Title The Student Opportunities Fund was established in 2009 through donations primarily from former students of the College. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide assistance to junior members of the College, directly or indirectly, in taking advantage of academic or extra-curricular opportunities. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund, all of which shall normally be disbursed in the year of donation. The Senior Tutor shall provide an annual report to donors on the use of the Fund.

THAWANI TRAVEL FUND Title The Thawani Travel Fund was established in 2011 by an initial gift from Arjun Thawani, who read Natural Sciences and Chemical Engineering at the College from 1995 to 1999. Eligibility A Thawani Travel Award may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial assistance to be able to travel to undertake voluntary work or a project that could challenge their perspective on life. A successful applicant will be expected to write a brief and informative account of their travels which the College may publish in the Fitzwilliam Journal or elsewhere soon after they have completed their travel. FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY RESEARCH FUND An annual amount is provided by the Fitzwilliam Society for awards from the Fund. Eligibility Research Fellows, Graduate students and certain undergraduates with approved non-departmental research expenses. Applications may be made for purposes directly concerned with research including attendance at conferences. Applications from research students and junior members should be accompanied by a statement from the supervisor or director of studies in justification. Applications cannot be accepted for expeditions and field work which are a normal part of a research programme or of a Tripos. nor should they be made where support can be obtained from Departmental, Faculty, University, Research Council, Royal Society, British Academy or other sources. Those who wish to make applications more than six months ahead may do so. No retrospective applications will be entertained. Any application must be accompanied by an account of the project for which the award is being requested and a break-down of the costs involved. FLIGHTBOOKERS STUDY FUND Title The Flightbookers Study Fund was established by a benefaction from Mr D Dhamija (BA 1974) who read Law at the College from 1971-74. The income of the Fund shall be used to support Junior Members undertaking academic projects abroad.

THE STANLEY AND ILENE GOLD TRAVEL FUND Title The Stanley and Ilene Gold Travel Fund was established in 2009 by a generous gift from the Gold Family Charitable Foundation, at the instance of Mr Stanley P Gold (matriculated 1967), who read for a Diploma in Comparative Legal Studies at the College. The gift was made in recognition of the “formative influence” of the opportunity afforded to Mr Gold to travel from the USA to spend a year at Fitzwilliam. The Foundation originally established the Gold Travel Fund in 1992 and has subsequently added to it on a regular basis. The income of the Fund shall be used to support Junior Members undertaking academic projects abroad. Eligibility Any Junior member of the College may apply for a grant from the Fund. Grants will be made at the discretion of the Master and Tutors, having regard to the merit of the proposed project.

THE DICK HAYWOOD FUND Title The Dick Haywood Fund was established in 1994 by a benefaction from Mrs Sylvia Haywood to commemorate the life and work of her husband. Richard W Haywood read Mechanical Sciences at Fitzwilliam (1936-1939) and was Director of Studies in Engineering and a Fellow of the College from 1963-1970. The income of the Fund shall be used to promote peaceful international relations and understanding. Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his/her Tutor to the Master and Tutors for a bursary or general financial assistance for studies in the field of international relations. Priority will be given to students who wish to participate in the University's Global Security Programme. A statement of the proposed course of study and estimated expenses should be included. The number of bursaries awarded and the amount of financial assistance given shall be limited only by the income of the fund in a given academical year, unless otherwise directed by the benefactor.

BARBARA HUMPHREY FUND

Title The Humphrey Fund is provided by a gift made in 1997 by Mr H H Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933, read Geography and Law and obtained an LL.B in 1938. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide awards to graduate or undergraduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study. Title The Hugh Humphrey Fund was established in 2009 through a gift made by the sons and daughter of the late Mr Hugh Haviland Humphrey, who matriculated in 1933. He read Geography (BA 1935) and Law and obtained an LLB in 1938. Subject The Fund shall be used to provide awards to undergraduate or graduate students for relief of hardship or for assistance with travel costs related to a course of study.

THE ILSLEY FUND Title The Ilsley Fund was established by a benefaction from Mrs E H Ilsley in 1965 in memory of her nephew, Major P E Ilsley, who read History at Fitzwilliam House (1939-41). After reading Part I History Major Ilsley entered the Army and served with distinction for five years. He returned to complete his degree and died in 1948 at the age of 26. The income of the Fund shall be used "for the benefit of students reading History." Eligibility Any undergraduate in the College reading History may apply through his/her Director of Studies to the Tutorial Committee for a grant from the Fund for financial assistance to help with any aspects of their studies.

GRAHAM NUTTER FUND

Title The Graham Nutter Fund was established in 2002 by a gift from Mr G F Nutter, who read Geography at the College 1966 to 1969.

Eligibility A Graham Nutter bursary may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial help arising from hardship or in connection with travel for academic purposes.

Value The number and value of Graham Nutter bursaries shall be limited only by the funds available.

THE RITTNER NIEDERSTE-HOLLENBERG FUND

Title The Rittner Niederste-Hollenberg Fund was established in 2013 by a gift from Mr Hermann Niederste-Hollenberg, and Dr David Bowyer, Fellow (1975-2002) and, subsequently, Life Fellow of the College. The Fund is named in memory of Mr Niederste-Hollenberg’s great cousin, Frau Gisela Rittner. Eligibility Awards from the fund may be made to any member of (or visitor to) the College in support of academic activities within Europe (including travel for educational purposes). Preference may be given to graduates and for the purpose of facilitating academic interchange with Germany.

EDGAR PALMER FUND

Title A gift to the University from Miss D V Crisp was made in 1963, supplemented by a benefaction to the College in 1987, in memory of her brother-in-law Dr Edgar Palmer, who came to this country from Australia and was a student at Fitzwilliam House. A fund was established to benefit members of Fitzwilliam House undertaking post-graduate study or research in medicine, or in any allied biological subject. The income of the Fund shall be applied by the Master and Tutors from time to time to make grants for research or travel, or for such other purposes as they think fit. Eligibility Any graduate of a University of the British Commonwealth who is a member of the College shall be eligible for an award from the Fund, but preference shall be given to such graduates who are citizens of Australia.

HIRST PLAYER FUND

The income from the Fund established in memory of Eric Noel Player and Wilfrid Bertram Hirst (both Fitzwilliam Hall 1911-14) shall be used to provide bursaries and studentships for men or women, preferably ordinands, reading for a Degree or a Diploma in Theology. Candidates must have been admitted or be candidates for admission to membership of the College. Preference will be given to those who either have taken or are intending to take Holy Orders in a Christian Church which is a member of the World Council of Churches. Bursaries Up to 10% of the annual income of the Fund may be used by the Master and Tutors to award bursaries to deserving candidates as defined in Regulation 2 in order to enable them to attend particular conferences or courses or to undertake specified projects connected with their training. Nominations for such awards shall be made by the candidate's Tutor.

STACHULSKI-DUDDING BURSARY FUND Title The Stachulski-Dudding Bursary Fund was established in 2001 by benefactions to the College from Dr A V Stachulski, who read Natural Sciences for 1968 to 1971 and obtained a PhD in organic chemistry in 1974 and Mr J C Dudding, who also read. Natural Sciences from 1968 to 1971 and who was awarded a College 1912 Exhibition.

THE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES FUND Title The Student Opportunities Fund was established in 2009 through donations primarily from former students of the College. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to provide assistance to junior members of the College, directly or indirectly, in taking advantage of academic or extra-curricular opportunities. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund, all of which shall normally be disbursed in the year of donation.

THAWANI TRAVEL FUND Title The Thawani Travel Fund was established in 2011 by an initial gift from Arjun Thawani, who read Natural Sciences and Chemical Engineering at the College from 1995 to 1999. Eligibility A Thawani Travel Award may be awarded to any student of the College in need of financial assistance to be able to travel to undertake voluntary work or a project that could challenge their perspective on life. A successful applicant will be expected to write a brief and informative account of their travels which the College may publish in the Fitzwilliam Journal or elsewhere soon after they have completed their travel. Value The number and value of Thawani Travel Awards shall be limited only by the funds available.

TRETHEWEY GRADUATE RESEARCH FUND Title The Trethewey Graduate Research Fund was established in 2014 with a gift from Dr Richard Trethewey who read the Natural Sciences Tripos from 1987-90, and obtained a PhD in Plant Sciences in 1994. Eligibility The Trethewey Graduate Research Awards shall be made to graduate students requiring support to cover costs associated with their academic research or conference attendance.

THE AVSHALOM HERTZWOLF SAXOPHONE SCHOLARSHIP Title The Avshalom Hertzwolf Saxophone Scholarship was established with a gift presented in memory of Avshalom Hertzwolf (1954-2009); an anglophile and enthusiastic saxophonist. Eligibility The Scholarship is open to undergraduate and postgraduate applicants to Fitzwilliam College for degree courses in any subject, and shall be awarded by competitive audition. Applications shall be made by letter, with two supporting references. The College also reserves the right to appoint an existing student of Fitzwilliam College, and to appoint more than one Scholar. The Scholar will contribute to the musical life of the college and university through solo and ensemble performance, and shall undertake such reasonable duties as the Director of Music shall determine. The Scholarship is not tenable concurrently with any other music scholarship at Fitzwilliam College. Value Scholars will receive an award of £150 per annum. The Scholarship will be awarded for one year, with the possibility of extension of up to three years.

THE QUEEN ANNE’S FUND Title The Queen Anne’s Fund was established in 2006, by a gift from Dr Christopher John Gill, who read Agricultural Science at Fitzwilliam 1965-68 and both was awarded a College Scholarship and gained a Blue for rowing in 1968. The Fund is named after his home with his wife, Alison, whom he married in the College Chapel. Eligibility The income of the Fund shall be used to provide Choral Scholarships, any residue being used to support music in the College. Number The number of awards from the Queen Anne’s Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors on the advice of the Director of Music and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund. Eligibility The Yehudi Menuhin Scholarship shall be awarded each year to an outstanding string player (violin, viola, cello or double bass), normally by competitive audition during the Michaelmas term. Applications should be made to the Director of Music detailing past achievements as well as current and future (planned) obligations and commitments. THE PADLEY REPETITEUR SCHOLARSHIP

Title The Padley Repetiteur Scholarship was established in February 2008 by a donation from Dr Peter Padley (a Founding Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, 1963 – 1966) Eligibility The Padley Repetiteur Scholarship shall be awarded to a Junior Member of the College who is a keyboard player with an interest in working as a repetiteur, accompanist or conductor. The successful applicant will assist the Fitzwilliam Chamber Opera and support practical musical activities in Fitzwilliam College. The Scholarship may not be held in conjunction with an Organ Scholarship or a Choral Scholarship. Value Scholars will receive an award of £120 per annum. One Scholarship may be awarded each year

KENNETH SMITH AND RONALD SMITH ALKAN PIANO SCHOLARSHIP Title The Kenneth Smith and Ronald Smith Alkan Piano Scholarship was originally founded as the Alkan Piano Scholarship, and in 2013 was refounded under a new title in recognition of the founders of the Alkan Piano Scholarship, Dr Kenneth Smith (Life Fellow of Fitzwilliam College) and Ronald Smith (professional pianist). Eligibility The Kenneth Smith and Ronald Smith Alkan Piano Scholarship shall be awarded by competitive audition to an undergraduate or postgraduate student of the College who is an advanced solo pianist. The successful applicant will undertake performances and support practical musical activities in Fitzwilliam College. The Scholarship may not be held in conjunction with an Organ Scholarship or a Piano Repetiteur Scholarship.

The residual income of the Fund may be used to provide financial assistance in connection with musical activities by Junior Members of the College. The income of the Fund has been used since 1991 to support one or two organ scholars. Eligibility A Thatcher Music Scholarship may be awarded to an organ scholar. Number of Awards Up to two Thatcher Music Scholarships of £450 each may be awarded each year.

THE TONY COLLINSSPLATT CUPS FOR MUSIC AND DRAMA Title The Tony Collinssplatt Cups, for Music, and for Drama, form part of a gift of silver to the College by Richard Anthony Collinssplatt, who took a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at Fitzwilliam in 1963-64. Eligibility The Music Cup may be awarded annually to a final year undergraduate who has made the most significant contribution to music in the College, failing which, in the University. The Drama Cup may be awarded to a final year undergraduate who has made the most significant contribution to drama in the College, failing which, in the University. The recipients will also receive a prize of £100.

SWINBURNE SENIOR PRIZE FOR MUSIC Title The Swinburne Senior Prize for Music was established in 2001 by a donation from Dr K A Swinburne (1950) who read Medical Sciences at Fitzwilliam. Eligibility The Swinburne Senior Prize for Music may be awarded for outstanding contribution to the musical life of the College by any undergraduate or graduate of the College, irrespective of whether they are reading for a degree in Music. Value The value of the Swinburne Senior Prize for Music will be £125. In exceptional circumstances, the Prize may be shared.

FATHER BROWN CHAPEL MUSIC FUND Title The Father Brown Chapel Music Fund was established in 2005 by a bequest from The Reverend Anthony Frank Palmer Brown (Fitzwilliam 1953). Eligibility This fund is designated for the support of Chapel Music including requirements relating to the choir and the organ, such as the purchase of sheet music, choir visits and music lessons for those in the choir.

FATHER BROWN BROOM TREE CHAPEL FUND Title The Father Brown Broom Tree Chapel Fund was established in 2013 by a gift from The Reverend Anthony Frank Palmer Brown (Fitzwilliam 1953). Eligibility This fund is to support worship in the Chapel and to promote the fellowship of its congregation, to include an annual celebration of the Mount Etna Broom Tree, by the Chapel, grown from seed by Father Brown. Value The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Chaplain, and in accordance with guidelines approved by the Tutorial Committee, and shall be limited according to the income of the Fund.

THE E D DAVIES FUND Title The E D Davies Fund was established in 1995 by a bequest from Mr E D Davies (BA 1931) who read Geography and History at Fitzwilliam House between 1928 and 1931. Eligibility One tenth of the total allocation is to provide awards for music if suitable candidates present themselves. Applications in the form of a covering letter, with receipts for the lessons, to the Senior Tutor.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY MILNER WALTON AWARDS Title The Milner Walton Awards were established by the Fitzwilliam Society Trust Limited in 1999 in memory of Guy Milner Walton, who read History and English at Fitzwilliam House 1920-24 and was President of the Fitzwilliam Society 1937-38. Eligibility Awards may be made to support musical or dramatic performances in response to written applications to the Senior Tutor. Value Awards, which shall not be limited in number, shall be made by a panel authorised by the Tutorial Committee, and reported annually and shall be limited to an annual total of £2,500.

Title The Dorothy Pounds Music Fund was established in 1991 by a benefaction from Professor Norman J G Pounds, in memory of his wife. Professor Pounds read Geography at Fitzwilliam (1931-1934) and was subsequently Tutor of Fitzwilliam House (1944-1950). Eligibility Any Junior Member of the College may apply through his Tutor for a grant from this fund to assist with his or her musical activities. Financial assistance is also available to groups of three or more players (in which at least half of the group should be members of Fitzwilliam) for professional coaching for the preparation of works for Fitzwilliam College concerts.

JOHN ADAMS FUND Title The John Adams Fund was established in 2012 by members of the Billygoats Society in recognition of John Adams’ fifty years of service to the Society and Fitzwilliam College rowing. The Awards The income of the John Adams Fund shall be used to provide prizes and bursaries as proposed by Officers of the Billygoats Society (President, Secretary and Treasurer) and approved by the Tutorial Committee. John Adams Bursaries may be awarded to student members of the college who have incurred expenses in connection with rowing either for the Boat Club or for University crews. One or more John Adams Prizes of £100 may be awarded annually to student members of the College who have done most to promote the wellbeing and success of the Boat Club. Value The value of a John Adams Bursary shall not exceed the amount of the expenses incurred. The total value of John Adams Prizes and Bursaries in any year shall not exceed the income of the

THE PAUL DAY SPORTS FUND Title The Paul Day Sports Fund was established in 2013 with a donation from Paul Day (matriculated 1977, Mathematics) who played table tennis for England while he was an undergraduate. The Fund shall be used to support junior members of the College, playing sport at the highest levels, who require financial assistance to take advantage of sporting opportunities. Eligibility The distribution of this expendable Fund shall be at the discretion of the Executive Trustees of the JMA, and shall be limited to the amount of the annual income from, and donations to, the Fund; the intention being that it is normally disbursed within three years of donation. FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY STRATTON PRIZE Title The Stratton Prize was established by the Fitzwilliam Society to commemorate the name of Sir John Stratton who read English and Archaeology and Anthropology at Fitzwilliam House 1929-32.

W F REDDAWAY PRIZES

Title The Reddaway Prizes were established in 1966 by a gift from King's College to be used together with donations from Mrs W F Reddaway and her family between 1958-63, in memory of W F Reddaway (Censor of Fitzwilliam Hall 1907-24, previously Lecturer in History at Fitzwilliam Hall 1896-1907). Eligibility A Reddaway Prize may be awarded to members of the College, who, in the opinion of the Master and Tutors, have during the year contributed most to the furtherance of the prestige of the College, either by achievement or outstanding example in any field or endeavour open to Junior Members. (Whether scholarship and academical work, sport, cultural activities, student life generally or any combination of these fields). Number of Prizes Up to five Reddaway Prizes may be awarded each year.

Value The value of a WF Reddaway Prize shall be £100.

FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE ACCESS FUND Title The Fitzwilliam College Access Fund was established in 2012 with a gift from Sir Peter Bazalgette who read Law at the College from 1973 to 1976. Eligibility The Fund shall be used to support activities designed to encourage high-quality applications to Fitzwilliam College, especially from the maintained sector. Value The capital and income of the fund may be used at the discretion of the Admissions Tutor, in accordance with guidelines established by the Education Committee.

FITZWILLIAM SOCIETY BREWSTER PRIZES Title The Brewster Prizes for Debating were established by the Fitzwilliam Society Trust Limited in 2002 in honour of Rev Lester Brewster, who read History at Fitzwilliam House 1948-51 and was a benefactor to both the College and the Society, of which he was President 1972-73. Eligibility Prizes may be awarded to participants in an annual Fitzwilliam Society Brewster Debate, organized by the Senior Tutor.

Value There shall be two prizes of £100 each for the best principal speakers and one prize of £20 for the best contribution from the floor.

MASTER'S GIFT FUND The Fund is financed by money received from interest on students' deposits, from the Fund's own income, and by other Funds, accessible to the Master and Tutor for student support. Eligibility The Master's Gift Fund provides awards to undergraduate and postgraduate students to support extracurricular activities which are not supported (or cannot be adequately supported) by the JMA or other College Funds. Applications should be made through the Tutor to the Master, and can be made at any time.

THE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES FUND

The Student Opportunities Fund was established in 2009 through donations primarily from former students of the College. The Fund shall be used to provide assistance to junior members of the College, directly or indirectly, in taking advantage of academic or extra-curricular opportunities. The number and value of awards from the Fund shall be at the discretion of the Tutors and shall be limited to the amount of the annual income of the Fund, all of which shall normally be disbursed in the year of donation.
