What is a Digipak?

A digipak is a type of packaging for CDs or DVD made of cardboard, with a plastic tray that holds a disc on the inside.

Digipaks are usually offered as special editions of albums or singles by musical artists. They are used as an alternative for jewel cases, which are the plastic cases that CDs and DVDs typically come in.

Why are digipaks released?

Digipaks are targeted towards loyal fans of a particular artist, and people who collect material released by their favourite artists.

A digipak can increase the popularity of an artist by increasing the public’s awareness of them, encouraging consumers to buy the music.

Older albums of some artists are often re-released in a special digipak edition, which reminds people of these artists. These special editions could be launched before the release of a brand new album, as people who have recently listened to a favourite album could be easily made to buy the newly released one by the same artist.

What does a digipak contain?

The digipak can come in various sizes, going from 2 panels to 6 panels that can fold out, containing pictures, special messages, exclusive information or surprise features.

The front of the digipak typically shows the artist, and its style fits the genre of the music and the artist image is representative of the genre.
