choosing your course

Choose a course that is right for you

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

Develop your skills in English, Maths and ICT in real life situations. You can take a Functional Skills qualification if you are over 16 years of age, have left compulsory full-time education or do not have an up-to-date English or Maths qualification at Level 2 (such as a GCSE). Functional Skills are often a stepping stone to GCSEs and support progression to higher levels.

GCSES

The main qualifications taken by 14 to 16 year olds. Highly valued by schools, colleges and employers and useful whatever your future plans. Maths and English are particularly valued by employers and are important in enabling progression to higher levels.

ESOL

If English isn’t your first language, ESOL courses cover speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. You will be assessed before starting your course to ensure you are placed on the right level.

NVQ DIPLOMA

You can study this industry related qualification at College or work as part of an Apprenticeship.

You will learn practical, work-related tasks to help you develop skills and knowledge to do a job effectively.

You will be assessed on your skills and knowledge to see the areas that need to be developed to complete your qualification.

NVQs are based at Levels 1 to 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

BTECS

BTEC Level 2 Diplomas and Extended Certificates enable you to progress into employment or study at the higher level of the Subsidiary Diploma, 90 Credit Diploma or Extended Diploma.

The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and is a preferred route for many to University. All qualifications have been designed in collaboration with industry, to equip you with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

The qualifications offer a mix of theory and practice and will include an element of work experience or a work-related project. They can take the form of (or be part of) a technical certificate, one of the key components of an Apprenticeship.

TECHNICAL BACCALAUREATE

An alternative to A-Level study, TechBacc students will study Level 3 Maths and complete an Extended Project in addition to their Level 3 Extended Diploma. Courses that are available as a TechBacc are shown within the following course pages.

The qualifications featured in this guide may be subject to change due to changes by awarding bodies or funding changes from the ESFA (Education & Skills Funding Agency). Please speak with the Client Services team on 01737 788444 if you need further information or guidance.

Tracy’s husband fell very ill with Encephalitis in 2014 and had to become his carer/nurse for a year and a half. She found that she had an aptitude for caring and made the brave decision to change career.

Tracy enjoyed the course although it was hard work. It taught her how to manage her time better allowing her to achieve timely completion of the coursework.

She found the psychology and the mental health aspects of the course to be the most interesting.

Following this course Tracy went on to study Children’s Nursing, specialising in Neo-Natal at the University of Brighton and aims to become a Health Visitor.

Having studied for A-Levels at Addington High School, Anne decided that vocational study was a much better fit for her way of learning as she prefers to learn through practical exercises.

Anne found the course “great fun with lots of variety and work to do,” especially the criminology aspect of the course where everybody was assigned a serial killer for an assignment.

Anne wants to go to Nottingham University to study Biology & Tropical Science or Human Behaviour & Human Enhancements.

In terms of a career, Anne would like to go into Rainforest research to develop new types of medicine.

As s former student of de Stafford School in Caterham, Paychee initially studied Vocational Studies at ESC and had the opportunity to try different subject areas. She really enjoyed working with children as part of a work experience placement which helped her decide to study Childcare.

She enjoyed the creative side of the course – making resources to take to nursery e.g. hand and feet painting, making a family tree – things that she could then use with the children.

Paychee completed a four-month work experience placement at The Laurels Day Nursery, which prompted her to pursue full-time work in a similar setting.

She commented, “All the tutors are really supportive. You will always get help if you need it, for example in preparing for exams.”

A former De Stafford pupil, Nyomi chose ESC as she felt it had a good reputation.

She ‘loves’ her course and feels that she is very good at painting and decorating. She said: “the quality of teaching here at the College is great! The lecturers are really engaging and make you feel like you want to learn from them.”

Nyomi started on a Traineeship which she enjoyed as it gave her the chance to build essential skills in a variety of areas including her ‘people skills’.

Nyomi plans to progress on to an Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating.

I get to learn a trade and earn money! East Surrey College tutors have been very helpful, very informative and they know what they are talking about. I’d like to spend a few years as a technician and then hopefully move up and become an engineering manager.

If you are self-motivated and you know what industry you want to go into, I would recommend an Apprenticeship.

Vicky chose an Apprenticeship at Thales UK as university wasn’t for her. She wanted to get out into the workplace and start earning.

Vicky said: “The NVQ part of my course is the ‘in work’ learning, and the assessors come in and make sure I am progressing with my NVQ. I get to go out and about on site and visit the products we make actually in the field; I have even been able to go on board ships.

I plan to stay at Thales to further my career and develop my skills. I would recommend an Apprenticeship as it’s a good experience learning on the job and you don’t end up with a large university debt!”

Although Luca had already studied English, he needed to improve his skills. Understanding most of the grammar functions, he had to learn to apply them to become more fluent in spoken English.

Luca started a study programme which included ESOL Level 1 and AAT Level 1 as he wanted to become an Accountant.

Luca’s English skills were put to the test as he had to call upon both written and verbal skills. He continued to progress achieving his AAT Level 4 Diploma and Level 4 Apprenticeship in January 2016.

He now works as an Accountant and recently received an award at the AAT Gala Award Ceremony in London and is proud to be able to use the letters MAAT and AATQB after his name.

Georgia really enjoyed her time at ESC. She has been very active within the Student Union and was elected President and Student Governor in her final year.

Georgia feels that she is now a different person. She has gained the confidence to speak publicly which she felt unable to do before. Her favourite aspect of the course was learning to be disciplined and she has gained a great sense of respect for others. She has also developed a deeper sense of teamwork which is essential on this course.

Her other achievements include runner up Student of the Year, captain of the Archery team and the Tennis Leaders champion.

Georgia plans to go into the police and has been offered a job as a Counter Extremism Investigator by MI5.

He is currently building a body of work in his studio in Woolwich which includes sculpture and paintings.
