Louisville Manufaclures - Boots and Shoes.

The manufacture of boots and shoes is carried on by iiersons who make principully what they eon sell from their shops to the city resideuts. The exceptions to this fact are the houses of D. Marshall, Joseph Buckle, S. P. Secor, Louis OotcLer, Hugh (7arey and a few others whose make of these useful and necessary articles are sold by jobbing bouses. The great number of these small manufactures Lss rendered it a vert Jitficult task to arrive at a definite estimate ofthe great intere.sts which they represent, but the Og- jrcs here presented have been collected with great care to truth and accuracy.

There are fully 200 shops in the city. Of this i aiimber, not over twenty do busicess upon a iCBle at all approaching to wholesale. The most jf them have but a small capital invested, and mjiloy from but two to four hands. One or two stablishnients employ about thirty hands upon ,ight fancy wrrk, and from six to ten upon heavy abor. A few j cars since the same Louses employed fully twenty-five men for heavy labor, but the mcroaso of small manufactures, who make good heavy work at a much less cost than formerly, las compelled them to cut down the number of hands, and do more light work. The number of hands to each establishment will not average note than four. This will show that about &ihj to

The Hon. Junes Outhne-

Our Douglas-mad noiglibor Lasso exercised his wonderful powers of marvelous discovenr as to hod out and to publish to the world that we dont know whether or not Mr. Outhrie is with us in our political views, and that we are advocating his claims for the Presidency in IftOO without authority. This discovery we must confess is almost as astonishing as the finding of America, the making of gunpowder, the invention of printing, the use of steam, the creation of the magnetic telegraph, or any of the mysterious things which have startled the nations in modem times. Of course, no one bnt a Douglaphilite, fresh from the Cincinosti cauens, with Douglas arrogant letter in his pocket, could have made such a discovery, and published it as a thing out of the usual order, from the fact that politicians who are governed by principles, instead of blindly following men, require no authority except their own sense of right to advocate the claims of any public man fur the Presidency in this free country.

We must say, however, that we know enough about Mr. Guthrie's political tenets to be satisiicd with him. He is a national Democrat, true to the iutereats and Constitutional rights of each section of the country. Ue is above geographi- cal lines, and the concomitant pandering of demagogues to local prejudices. If the Charlea- ton Convention were to adopt the Cincinnati platform with the Dred Scott decision as its in- terpreter on the slavery question, iuitead of giving it s squatter sovereignty practical aboli- tion interpretation, Mr. Guthrie could stand on that platfurm. Mr. Douglas could not stand upon any such platform without falsifying his record, and therefore, we are opposed to Douglas and all like him, while we are fur Guthrie or any Democrat North or South eq ually souud.

We may further state that we neither ask of llr. Guthrie, nor any other public character, au- thority to speak of him ID coLuection with the Presidency. Politicians of his grade have a character that is both public and private, and while we have nothing to do with the latter, we aball do just what we please with the former. Unlike onr neighbor of the Democrat, in the ty- ranieal influence which Douglas seems to hare over him, Mr. Guthrie has DO control over us. The columns of the Courier are our own, and we hall use them for or against Guthrie, or any other man, when and how we please, without looking to authority beyond our own sense of right

As said before, we know enough about Mr. Guthrie (without going as far ns Cincinnati, or even bis Lome or office in this city, to consult him) to be satistied that he would make a firat rate President He has brains, experience, will, capacity, and above all, firmness enough and honesty enough to make a first class Executive. His past record suita us, and we believe Lia fu- ture will be satisfactory. We are not bound, body and soul to Guthrie, however, end do not advocate his election to the Presidency from any personal preferences, half so much as from pa- triotic motives. We look upon him as fbe man for the times, who can be elected if nominated by the Charleston Convention, which is more than we can say of numerous others now spoken of for the Presidency in l&dO. We know that Guthrie does not suit trimmers and spoilsmen and dems gognes, who make politics s plundering profes- sion, blit he suits us, and, if he can once get over the juggling bridges of conventions and come be- fore the people, he will suit the mas'-'es, who are far more honest and patriotic lhau wire-working, time-serving, otlice-hnnting, meii-following and principle-deserting politicians.

The Mask Thrown OT.

It will be remembered that when the Louisville Journal came out for Congressional protection to lavery in the Territories, we said that we did not believe the editor of that paper was sin- ceie in what he advocated, and that we feared he only asserted the doctrine of protection with a view to getting the slavery question before Con- gress in such a shape os to abolish it from the 'I'erritories, iusUad of protecting its lawful exist- ence there. Our rcaaons for this belief were briefly as follows:

1. Theeditorof the Journal was bora a Free- Boiler in an Abolition State. He entertained Free- nigger sentiments while in his native land, and has not forgotten them after many years residence in a alaveholding Stale.

k. W bile in Connecticut he opposed the annex- ation of Texas, because t would enlarge the area of slavery, and spoke of that great measure as follows:

Every man who does not wish to see the pow- ers of the Northern and Western States depart forever; every man who does not wish to see a doien new slave States added to the Union, and to hear the cries of additional millions of wretched negroes going up to meet the Lord in the air, and imprecate vengeance upon our land, will oppose the purchase of Texas with a deep and irresistible determination.

8 . hen he got to Kentucky ho still opposed the annexation of Texas, but, failing to prevent this enlargement of the area of slavery, ho went to work to get rid of slavery where it already ex- isted. Go this subject he spoke as follows:

We have ever looked forward to the day when Kentucky should contain within her borders no bondmen, and we hope to live to see the light of such a day.

* ' * *

A conviction of the expedienev and necessitvof ultimata emancipation has been 'spreading farther and farther among our countrymen, and taking deeper and deeper root in their minds, and it requires not the spirit of prophesy to foretell the end.

4. Not content, how ever, with thus opposing the enlargement of the area of slavery, and ad- vocating the emancipation of the whole African race in this country, he thought that slavery was a dreadful vampire draining the life-blood of the Republic, that all the negroes in the land were entitled to liberty, and went ao far as to endorse the following free nigger suffrage paragraph from a speech of John M. Uotte, whom be now thinks a suitable candidate for the Presidency :

If there was a State in the Union composed of free negroes, and the Conatitution gave them the right to vote, I should be much obliged to them to help me to elect our party.

5. In addition to all this he opposed the ad- miaeioD of Kansas into the Union as a slave State under the Lecompton Constitution, and thought the Donglas squatter sovereigns, the Northern Abolitionists, and the Southern Know Notbinga the cleverest fellows imaginable be- cause ttey prevented Kansas from being edded to the Union as a slave State.

Of coarse we conld not understand how a native of Abolition Connecticut, with such a record, could really be in favor of Congressional protection to slavery in the Territories. Hence we supposed that be advocated protection with e view to bringing the slavery question before Congreae in such a shape as to enable his fol- lowers from the South to unite with the Freesoil- ere of the North in abolishing slavery from the Territories instead of protecting its lawful exist- enee there, according to the guarantees of the Conatitution and the rights of the slave States, as o equals in the Union.

The position of the Journal, now that the elec- tion is over, indicates that we rightly divined the object of the editor in advocating protection. It has not been long aince be proposed to get np what he called %**grtat National Union parljf by oombiniag the Sontbern Know Nothings with the Northern Frcceoilers. He then said that the Black Republicans were vprigki! iktsixioskt!! AND CONSERVATIVEll! Ue now proposes to hu brother Oppositionists of the South to join these uprigkt, intdligent, and eotuenation Black Repnblicans, and help them to elect Tom Cor- win Speaker of the next House of Representa- tives. Tom Corwin is a noUMioue Freeaoiler, opposed to the farther extension of elavery, end in favor of emancipation wherever slavery now exists. Ue was nominated for Congress by the Blaek Republioaos last year, and elected by them. He will t^e his seat in Congrese as a Black Re- publican, and make the raeo for tfae Speakership of the Hones, as a partisan of the straigbtont free-nigger school. And now the editor of the Joarnal openly advises tfae OppositionisU of the Soath, who have been eleoUd beeense they pledged tbetneelras to the doctrine of protecting Vlavery ia the Territories, to vote for this rn

who is an avowed enemy to slavery in the Terri- tories and everywhere else.

We leave the honest Oppositionists of Ken- tucky who voted for their candidates on the question of protection to consider this impudent and outrageous proposition of the Journal. What do vou ttiink of the suggestion, Messrs. Bristow, Mallory, Moore, and Adams* Is this to be the sequel to your advocacy of protection to the rights of slaveholders in the Territories? Is this to be your stepping stone to the grMt National Union party in ISCO? We shall mark your course, gentlemen, and if you are wicked enough to follow the suggestion of the editor of the I.,eniaville Journal, you shall hear from us again.

The Next Speakership.

We have a couple of letters upon our table warmly advocating the re election of Dr. D. 1. White to the Bpeakership of the next House of Representatives of Kentucky. We agree with our correspondents in all the good things said of the Doctor, who mode so admirable a Speaker at the last aession as to bring down upon his head the curses of all Know Notbingdom. George K. McKee made the Doctor one of his points of de- nunciation throughout the State, and so did the Know Nothing orators and presses generally and particularly. The people showed what they thought of McKee's denunciation by electing Revill over him, and this triumph of Keviil and defeat of McKee was an indication of the pleas ure the people would take in seeing Dr. White restored to the office he filled so well.

The Hon. David Merriwether, of Jeff'erson, and Hiram McElroy, of Union, are also candidates for the Speakership. They are both sterling Demo- crats, and would make good presiding officers, Merriwelher has large experience as a parliamen- tarian, and McElroy could icon learn all that he does not already know to fit him for the office, even if he now lacks any knowledge necessary to a presiding officer.
