Born in Phoenix in
1898, Luke's early years were much the same as those of
other American youths. He was active and energetic with a
particular interest centered in athletics and adventure.
Like millions of others, his response was quick once his

country entered the world conflict in 1917. Within eleven
months he wos at the front and in Jess than six weeks, through
courage and expert ability, had established himself amo ng
America's immortals of the war.
True to his self avowed pledge that ''I'll never he taken
prisoner," Luke, hi.s plane grounded near Murvaux, France,
riddled l\nd di~abloed by b11U~l$1 fac;;ed. de111h bravely while
unload ing his automatic at a group of German soldiers ap
F!roaching 10 a uempt his capture.
In recognition o f his unprecedented achievemenis, he was
posthumously awarded the Congressional Meclal of Honor, the
only one awarded to a United Sta(es flier1 the Distinguished
Service Cross, with oak-leaf cluster encl three bars1 the Italian
War Cross1 the Aero Club of America medal for honor and
bravery1 and the Margarita Fisher Gold Medal for the first
Rockwell Field pilot to conquer an enemy in the ni~.
This year, when the United States Army decided 10 build
an Air Corp Advanced Flying School at Litchfield Park just
outside of Phoenix, it was a foregone conclusion that it should
be named for Lieutenant Frank Luke, Arizona's famous " balloon
buster". Not only will the name of this !lf0 of aces be perpe t·
uated for all time hut this perpetuation will be an active one
with thousands of young, eager Jledglings striving to uphold
1he Luke tradition and to bring glory lo the Jield 1hat bearo
