COURSES AND CLASS SESSIONS.SOARhastwoten-weeksemesters a year, one beginning the week after Labor Day inSeptemberandtheotherbeginningmid-March. AlmosthalfourSOARclassesareheldontheSUNYPotsdamcampus,aboutathirdareheldinCanton,andtherestareheldatotherplacesinPotsdamorinthelocalarea.MostSOARcoursesare�to8classsessionslongandusuallymeetonceaweek,Monday-Friday,for�½to2hours.Coursesareheldduringdaylighthours.Occasionally,courses,fieldtrips or events occur on the weekends or in the evening. SOARmembersmustregisterforeachcoursetheywanttotake.Courserequestsarefilledintheorderreceived.Lateregistrationsaretakenonly for courses with openings. Permission from SOAR, and insomecasesfromtheinstructor,isneededtojoinacoursealreadyinprogress.Oneormorenewcoursesbegineachweekduringthesemester. Therefore,memberswhohavebusy schedulesorwhotravelcanstillfindsomeSOARcoursestotake.

MEMBERSHIP FEES AND PRIVILEGES.Fortheiryearly $65 membership fee (paid in the fall), currentmembersmay takeasmany courses as they like, in both the fall and spring semesters.You may join (or rejoin) SOAR at any time; however, themembershipfeeisstill$65(allmembershiprenewalsareduewithfallregistration).MembershipinSOARincludesaSUNYPotsdamparkingpass,aswellastheprivilegeofusingtheMaxcyHallsportscomplex.(NOTE: MembersmustbeactiveintheSOARprograminordertoretaintheseprivileges.)SOARoffersdaytripsandotherspecialeventsandopportunitiesthroughouttheyear.AttheendofeachsemesterSOARholdsaluncheonforitsmembersandguests.Luncheons,tripsandspecialeventsareoptionalandcostextra.

The American Comic Book: An Overview Douglas (Doug) Rose4 sessions, 2 hours each (SUNY Potsdam: Kellas 217)ThiscoursecoversthedevelopmentoftheAmericancomicbookfromthe late �9th century up to the present. Topics include: the advent ofsuper- and costumed heroes; propaganda in war comics; and key aswell as controversial mainstream artists, writers and publishers fromthePlatinumtotheModernAgesofComics.Doug Rosebeganreadingcomic books when he was five. He puts the blame for becoming anEnglish professor on this pastime. While teaching at SUNY Canton,Dougassignedhisstudentscomicbookstoreadaspartoftheirwritingandliteraturecourses.In�999hecreatedandbeganteachingENGL2�7:ComicBooksasLiterature.Dougisnowretired,buthestilllovestoreadandtalkaboutcomicbooks.Cap: 20. The Amish Betsy Tisdale3 sessions, 1½ hours each (Potsdam Civic Center)TheAmishseemtobefromanotherworld,yettheyareinourmidst.Thiscourse provides some answers to the question of why they came to St.Lawrence County. The presenter will examine in some detail the recentnewsettlementofAmishintheareaeastofPotsdamtothecountylineinHopkinton. In these class sessions you will get some insights into a richculturethatincludes:Amishquiltmaking,foods,furniture,crafts,children’stoys,andbooks.Betsy Tisdalewilltalkabouther25+yearsofcontactwithlocalAmishgroups.Overtheyears,Betsyhashelpedthemselltheirproducts(quilts, furniture, crafts, etc.). In doing so, she has gained their trust andfriendshipandhasgrowntorespectandadmiretheirfriendly,quietwaysandtheirnon-materialisticsocietybuiltoncooperation.[F-11-7]

Art Workshop A Leon LeBeau 8 sessions, 2 hours each (SUNY Potsdam: Satterlee 314)ArtWorkshopAisdesignedbothforaspiringartistswhowishtolearnbasic watercolor techniques and for those who wish to advance theirpaintingskillsinwatermedia,e.g.watercolor,guache,oracrylic.Amorestructuredapproachwillbetakenwiththeformer;amoreindependentinteractionwillapplytothelatter.Instructionwillbethroughbothgroupand individualpresentations and also throughcritiques.Leon LeBeauhasbeen teachingdrawingandwatercolor toSOARparticipants sincethebeginningof theSOARprogram;hehasalso instructedartclassesattheRemingtonArtMuseuminOgdensburgandattheForArt’sSakeGallery in Malone. The Automobile: Taking Out the Mystery Roger Hutchinson4 sessions (3 at Silas Wright House, 1½ hours each + field trip to the automotive lab at SUNY Canton, 2 hours)Besidesfourwheelsandanengine,whatdoyouneedtoknowtokeepyourcarsafelyontheroad?Thiscoursecoversbasicsystems,howandwhentocheckthem,andwhatmaintenanceisappropriate.Thecoursebenefitsanyonewhodrivesacar;itisdesignedtohelpyoucopewithautomobileownership.Roger Hutchinsonisaretiredforesterwhohasalwaysworkedon cars. The Big Cats John Mc Donald2 sessions, 1½ hours each (SUNY Potsdam: Maxcy 104)Thefocusinthiscourseisonthebigcats–lions,leopards,jaguars–withthe primary focus on the most endangered species: the tiger and thecheetah.Wecovertheevolutionandhistoryofthespeciesaswellastheirsimilarities and differences and their former and current ranges. Topicsinclude:physicalcharacteristics,habitat,behavior,socialstructure,humanandcatinteractionsandconflicts,aswellasgeopoliticalinfluenceswhichwilleithersavethecatsforfuturegenerationsorresultintheirextinctionin thewild.John Mc Donald retiredfromIBMandArrowElectronics.Hehashadalifelonginterestinthebigcats.AsayoungmanheworkedinprimateresearchwhileattendingtheUniversityofMichigan.FollowinggraduationhespenttimewithDaveHoover,thelionandtigertrainerforthe Clyde Beatty and Cole Bros. Circus.
