Welcome to Fulford Academy, I am so glad that you are taking this time to read our brochure! I hope that this publication, which is an effort to present our unique little school on paper, will show the amazing opportunity that a Fulford Academy education provides for international students. The passion of our staff, and the warm atmosphere of our campus can only be realized by an actual visit to our school. However, we will do our best in the next few pages to reveal both our character and the value of a Fulford Academy education.

When the Academy was formed in 2002, Suzan Kendall had a vision for a school that would lead international students to future success. Suzan defined this success not only in academic grades and language skills, but hoped that Fulford students would be good citizens and leaders, both in their future school and in the broader community.

Our unique student-centred programs are tailored specifically to realize this vision by combining academic, social, cultural and linguistic learning. We are proud of our programs; they are very effective; satisfy the language needs of our students and also meet all Ontario Ministry of Education expectations.

I hope that what you see and read in these pages causes you to want more, and we are happy to provide you with any further information that you might need to make a decision regarding our school. Please enjoy this preview of Fulford Academy, and we look forward to a more direct conversation with you.

Who We AreFulford Academy is a private International Boarding School (Grades 7 to 10) located in Brockville, Ontario Canada. Brockville is situated along the beautiful St. Lawrence River, ideally located one hour from our nation’s capital – Ottawa, two hours from Montréal and four hours from Toronto. Fulford Academy’s four distinctive academic programs are designed to meet the needs of international students who wish to complete their education in English.

Fulford Academy provides students from all over the world with a caring learning environment where they gain the academic qualifications, the linguistic ability and the personal confidence to be very competitive for admission to North America’s top boarding schools. We pride ourselves on our commitment to fully develop the unique potential in each of our students.

Our intimate classes of 6 to 10 students ensure that all students receive a superior level of academic preparation and exceptional English as a Second Language (ESL) support. This extra attention enables students to improve their English skills as they study Math, Science, Geography, History, English Literature and other subjects. Language learning is integrated into all courses; we facilitate our students’ English development as they progress through their course curriculum.

Why Choose UsMany schools provide language instruction and support the development of better communication skills, but language acquisition is only one of four aspects of our programs. While English language development is a core emphasis, we also focus on preparing our students to excel in the North American boarding school environment. We teach and model the expectations and our students learn how to be successful. We also

actively teach Canadian culture, both to provide a solid context for learning and to allow our students to be fully engaged in the local and Global community. Lastly, we know that learning in Canada and the US can be quite different from a student’s home country, so we teach our students how to thrive in the various types of activities that are prevalent in a modern Canadian classroom.

Our teachers provide an exceptional level of support in a small state of the art classroom environment, allowing students to improve their English skills while studying Ontario curriculum. To integrate language learning in all subjects, additional time has been added to our classes to allow for extra activities and support. The goal for all of our students is to master grade-level subject content while improving their English skills.

Fulford Academy’s High School Program is for students who require ESL support in a small classroom environment to earn Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credits towards their high school graduation.

To graduate and earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, there are three major requirements a student must meet:

• Successfully complete all 30 of the specific

required credits

• Successfully complete the Ontario Secondary

School Literacy Test

• Complete 40 hours of community service

The credits required for graduation include 18 compulsory and 12 optional credits*. At Fulford Academy, we offer all of the necessary Grade 9 and 10 credits that can be transferred to their next secondary school.

Before graduating, a student must meet the Ontario literacy standard by passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test offered in Grade 10. If a student does not pass, they may be eligible to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O). Depending on student demand, this course can be completed at Fulford Academy.

Students also need to complete 40 hours of community involvement during their studies in the province of Ontario. This requirement is achieved through our Residential Life Program where we believe it is important for character development in our students to be actively involved in our community.

Our High School Program is ideal for students who have an intermediate to advanced level of English, but still need to develop their skills further to qualify for admission to a competitive North American boarding school.

Our Middle School Program follows the same academic philosophy and structure as our High School Program with the exception that the students spend much of the day with a dedicated grade teacher who creates a more consistent and more sensitive learning environment. In middle school, our ESL certified teachers provide support in a small classroom environment allowing students to improve their English skills while studying their academic courses. These courses include language arts, science, math, social studies, physical education, and art.

The Middle School Program is the ideal entry point for students who wish to continue their education in boarding schools in North America.

Middle School Program (Grades 7-8)

Our ESL Foundation Program is an intensive English immersion program that is taught using grade appropriate Ontario curriculum content. This structure creates the ideal setting for students to improve their English skills through classroom vocabulary and communication. This program helps our students to not only succeed in their language development, but also allows them to transition into an academically challenging North American learning environment. Each student who successfully completes our ESL Foundation Program will receive one credit.

This Program is ideal for students who need to improve their English skills before attending an academic credit program at a boarding school.

ySummer School ProgramFulford Academy’s intensive Summer School Program is ideal for a wide range of students from all over the world from ages 11 to 17. This program helps students to improve their English skills, prepare for future studies in North America and earn one or two Ontario Secondary School Diploma credits.

The summer program is primarily for students who have received a “Letter of Acceptance” to a boarding school in September, have applied to our programs or are considering a boarding experience in the future.

Just like our other programs, students in our Summer School Program get the advantage of smaller class sizes giving a superior level of support, enabling students to increase their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills

as they study math, science, geography, history and English.

Our Summer course offerings are based on student requests and needs for their next school’s application. A minimum of five students is required for each class. In order to receive Ontario credits, students must complete the full 7-week program to meet the Ontario Ministry of Education requirements of 110 credit hours per course.

Although our students work hard during the day to improve their English skills, they get to enjoy evenings and weekends that are filled with fun and exciting activities that introduce them to Canadian culture, and an opportunity to build lifelong friendships.

“I strongly believe that my summer at Fulford Academy helped me to build a foundation

for my steps afterwards and that I will benefit further from my experience there.”

Pre-AP courses are academically advanced courses that include a substantial amount of independent work and analytical projects that the student must complete outside of class. These courses are offered to all well-prepared students that are capable of the required level of self-direction. Fulford Academy offers Pre-AP middle school courses in English, math, science, and social studies, and high school courses in English, math, science, history and geography.

These courses are designed to prepare students for high school Pre-AP and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. AP courses are university-level courses taught in a high school setting. At the end of each AP course an AP Exam is given. Qualifying scores on the AP exams can enable students to receive college credit and/or advanced standing at a university or college.

Pre-AP Preparation

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) preparation classes are offered upon request to groups of students on Saturday mornings as an extra class.

MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) is a standardized test that was created at the University of Michigan. This test evaluates proficiency in understanding, writing and speaking the English Language.

This preparation is conducted in the form of a regular class and is taught by one of our qualified teachers.

Fulford Academy is a test centre for Junior TOEFL as well as MELAB.

In our small, safe and caring community, students are nurtured and challenged to reach their full potential in all aspects of their school life, both inside and outside of the classroom. Through our Residential Life Program students learn to thrive at a boarding school. In our weekly formal dorm meetings and through all of our programming, we teach students how to be a positive addition to a boarding school community, how to handle situations with maturity and how to become a strong, independent person.

Weekend ActivitiesStudents have a variety of choices of trips and activities to choose

from each and every week. The outings range from educational outings

to those that are pure fun. There are both mandatory trips for all to

enjoy and optional trips that may be selected. Our weekend activities

give students the opportunity to interact with each other, improving

their communications and social skills. If students choose to remain

at the school, there are always planned activities such as sports,

games or conversation groups that keep them busy and engaged with

each other. We also have our “Fulford Olympic Games”, an important

house competition that runs on weekends throughout the year. Our

students are never left with nothing to do, and they always have the

opportunity to socialize and to practice their English.

Community InvolvementFulford students are involved in the Brockville

community with activities such as the Earth Day

community clean-up project, when students along

with local residents help to clean up the local

parks for everyone to enjoy. We also volunteer

twice a month at Loaves and Fishes, a local

restaurant available for individuals in need of a

healthy inexpensive meal. These activities, and

many more, not only help our local community,

they also contribute towards the 40 hours of

community service that each student in Ontario

must complete to graduate from high school.

Hiking with Friends

Various ClubsOur clubs provide students with the opportunity

to try out a new interest or continue a lifelong

passion. The activities are often integrated with

local community groups, and help Fulford students

to make Canadian friends. We have a variety of

different activity options for our students in the

evenings, and all students participate in at least one

club per week. Students can select from arts, music,

sports or purely recreational pursuits. Some of the

options recently chosen include: soccer, basketball,

volleyball, football, horseback riding, martial arts,

yoga, piano, guitar, billiards, drums, swimming,

visual arts and yearbook. This program provides

a valuable break from the academic demands of

school, and takes place in the time between our

evening meal and the start of study hall.

Personal Support Our staff members provide the personal attention and care that each student needs to be comfortable and to feel safe at Fulford. Staff members are always present to care for students; 24 hours a day there is a familiar face to fulfill a parenting role with our students.

It seems that our students learn as many things outside of the classroom as they do in their academic classes. Through our Residential Life program our students learn some very valuable life lessons: how to respect yourself and others, how to be self-reliant, how to get the help you need to be successful, how to contribute to the community, how to recognize and grasp leadership opportunities, the rewards of goal setting and the personal discipline to reach them, the idea of giving up instant reward for future benefit, and much more.

Girls’ Common Room

Day Mom/Night MomDuring the day and evening, we have special people who take a leadership role in caring for the health and wellbeing of our students. We call them our Day Mom and Night Moms, and they have the primary responsibility of overseeing the students’ physical and emotional wellbeing. This role includes ensuring that the students’ basic needs are met so that they are able to focus fully on language development, academics and acculturation. The Day and Night Moms act as caring parents, providing not only physical care, but also emotional support to students who are hurt, homesick or feeling overwhelmed by the expectations of learning in another language. Residence AdvisorsOur Residence Advisors have the important role of teaching the students outside of the classroom, keeping them safe and showing them how to have fun during our activities in the non-academic times. The things that they impart to the students are no less valuable than learning English, math, geography and science. The self-awareness and social skills learned in the evening and on weekends often comes through experience, as a matter of course, but are nonetheless very important. In many ways the 2/3 of the day that is spent outside of the classroom has a greater influence on future student success than academic learning. Our residence staff members form a close team who work with a shared passion, and common purpose, to ensure the full development of each student. TeachersOur caring and committed teachers are concerned with the development of all aspects of a student’s life, not only with building knowledge and skills in the classroom. A Fulford education engages the whole-student and our teachers are always seeking to help each student to use their individual talents to lead them to future success. Whether they are student advisors, a coach or someone to confide in, our teachers help students develop into well-educated, confident, mature individuals with valuable life skills that they can take with them not only into their next school, but into their future.Advisor SystemEach student is assigned a teacher or staff member as their

advisor. These individuals fulfill the role of mentor and coach to their advisees, helping them through any challenges that they may have, and providing advice on how to find success. Students meet with their advisor at least weekly to discuss academics and daily events that happen throughout the week. Our advisors listen to their students concerns, provide support, identify the life lessons, comfort any disappointments and share in successes. Advisors are limited to five advisees, allowing for the proper attention that each advisee requires; they also act as the main school contact for the student and their family.

“Fulford Academy’s contribution in my achievements was tremendous as it was the

first to provide a setting for me to grow, develop personally and academically, and then

gave me a chance to showcase my full potential. It was the social, cultural, academic,

language skills, and, of course, self-confidence that I took away from my Fulford

Academy experience and transferred them into boarding school and university careers.

[...] Fulford Academy is more than a school, it became “home away from home” to its

students, including me.”

Placement ServicesWith Fulford Academy’s extraordinary personalized placement services, we take the time to get to know each student. Through Kendall & Associates Educational Consulting, we talk one-on-one with the students to better understand their academic strengths, extra-curricular interests and career aspirations.

Fulford Academy over the years has developed strong partnerships with top boarding schools across North America. Each of our partner

schools has different areas of excellence and with our understanding of each student we guide them to the schools that will best nurture their personal talents as well as their academic aspirations.

We help families to prepare the necessary documentation, prepare students for their interviews, and provide opportunities to visit the schools they are interested in and meet with admissions personnel.

“Fulford Academy offers a unique and powerful introduction to boarding school

life. Suzan Kendall, founder and Associate Head of School, has spent many years

working in selective admissions offices at boarding school and University. She

established Fulford Academy to meet the needs of international students who

needed to simultaneously improve their English language skills and prepare for

boarding school and eventually university. Fulford Academy offers an unparalleled

experience for these students.

After many years of collaboration, we have great confidence in the Fulford Academy staff, who prepare

students for the academically and personally rigorous experience that they will find at St. Johnsbury

Academy. We are also confident in recommending Fulford Academy to students who will benefit from

the very personal approach to language acquisition that only a very small school like Fulford can provide.

I am unaware of any other program that so thoroughly prepares the young English language learner for the

academic and personal challenges of boarding school life.”

JACK CUMMINGS, ASSOCIATE HEADMASTER, ADMISSION AND ADVANCEMENT; ST. JOHNSBURY ACADEMY (ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT, USA)

“Fulford Academy is a great resource for Appleby College and our diverse student

body. When we have a student that needs extra English instruction, or additional

course preparation, we are happy to recommend Fulford Academy.

As we have worked together closely for years, we are confident in the quality

of personal support and academic instruction that our students receive while at

Fulford. Another benefit of studying at Fulford is the opportunity to experience

boarding school life, an advantage which helps students prepare for attending Appleby College.

Many Fulford Academy students have continued their studies at Appleby College and we have full confidence

in Fulford’s ability to prepare students for our rigorous and exciting boarding school experience.”

MATT SHERIDAN-JONAH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ADMISSIONS; APPLEBY COLLEGE (OAKVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA)

“Fulford Academy is small and has both a family atmosphere and caring staff. Due

to the nurturing family environment, daily support from the teachers as well as

staff, and 24/7 supervision, including great activities on the weekends, our sons

were set up for success. We loved to see how respectfully teachers and students

communicate and live together. Our sons have made international friends, learned

about different cultures and are immersed in Canadian life. Our thanks goes out

to all the employees of Fulford Academy who have done an amazing job: caring,

teaching students, investing a lot of time not only for the academic success, but also helping them to grow

and to find their own personal path.”
