This year, Fuchun Play Day was held on Friday, 17 February. All our Primary 4, 5 and 6 pupils were involved in exciting sports tournaments (Captain’s Ball, Handball and Ultimate Frisbee), challenging Orienteering activities and engaging Relay Telematches. This year’s Fuchun Play Day’s prize presentation included the second and third places for all the three games played in the Telematches so as to affirm more pupils for the effort put in. Despite the fierce competition, the pupils displayed sportsmanship and the five school values of Care, Responsibility, Integrity, Respect and Perseverance.

Since 2011, our school and the Singapore American School (SAS) have been working together. All the Primary 1 pupils collaborated with their peers from SAS for four sessions to create simple alphabet books based on the theme of friendship. This theme was specially chosen to coincide with International Friendship Day which was commemorated in April. Two sessions were held at Fuchun Primary and SAS each. This partnership enabled pupils to interact with friends of different cultures and backgrounds while learning more about words. The completed alphabet books would be given to Fei Yue Family Services Centre to help them improve young residents’ reading skills.

131 excited Primary 4 pupils embarked on a day-trip to Johor Bahru over two days during the March holiday. Accompanied by their teachers, the 131 participants eagerly hopped onto the coaches, all set to visit an authentic kampong and organic park.

The learning journey is aimed to give the pupils an opportunity to get hands-on experience in a kampong setting and understand the need for sustainable farming in this resource scarce society that we live in today. It is also hoped that the pupils would come away from the trip being better able to care for themselves, their personal belongings and their friends.

From the smiles on the pupils’ faces and positive feedback received, the overseas programme was indeed a tremendous success!

On 12 April, 222 of our Primary 5 pupils set off to the rustic Terror Sea Scout campsite in Sembawang for their Adventure Camp. For many of the campers, staying away from home for a 2-day 1-night camp was a first. However, as they embraced the challenging activities and bonded with their classmates, their initial trepidation was replaced with joy and camaraderie. They embraced the values of respect and responsibility through the various shared experiences they encountered. At the end of the camp, we could see that our pupils have matured with a renewed sense of appreciation for themselves, their peers and the environment.

Total Defence Day or TDD was commemorated in school from 13th to 17th February. This year’s theme for Total Defence Day, ‘Together We Keep Singapore Strong’ aimed to emphasize that the safety and peace prevalent in Singapore over the past 51 years is due to the efforts of all Singaporeans. While times have changed, total defence remains relevant because the current threats requiring all Singaporeans to step up and play their part.

To help pupils understand the importance and significance of total defence, there were various TDD-related activities that the pupils did during their CCE lessons as well as a book display at the school library and quizzes during the respective recesses. Parents were also encouraged to do their part for total defence by discussing the topic with their children at home.

Congratulations to Min Yan on achieving a Gold Award for the Poster Drawing (Primary) Competition. This year, our school started a new CCA, the Speech and Drama Club. The club recruited members who have the interest in public speaking and performance. Our adventurous club members put their creative juices to work when they participated in the annual The Singapore Odyssey of the Mind (OM) Finals, which was held at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) on 7 and 8 April. The theme for the 2017 OM competition was “To be Continued: A Superhero Cliffhanger”. The teachers-in-charge, together with the club members, created and presented an original performance about a boy who possesses a superhero power - an ability to communicate with animals. However, whenever he used his superhero power to talk to animals, a horse tail would mysteriously appear on his back! Together with his sidekick, a blind dog, the duo foiled the plans of The Big Bad Wolf when he tried to attack the villagers’ sheep. The competition provided many opportunities for the members to work with each other and boosted their confidence in performing a drama and public speaking. The members had certainly put up a wonderful performance, enjoyed themselves and gained valuable experiences along the way. We are proud of them!

This year, we have officially embarked on Programme for Active Learning (PAL) for Primary 1 and 2 pupils. The PAL programme provides a broad exposure of experiences for our pupils in the four domains; namely Sports & Games, Outdoor Education, Performing Arts and Visual Arts.Through these experiences, our pupils acquire values and develop social and emotional competencies while building confidence, inquisitiveness and teamwork.

The photos below depict one of the dance modules whereby the pupils imitated various animal movements. This is to enable them to understand more about personal space.
