Re: FU Rpg[Peril Planet]: Conditions & Combat

Just because Fate's consequences get more severe doesn't mean FUs don't have to.A gash, followed by an incapacitated arm followed by a near fatal stabbing for example. Each of these would grant penalty dice in the right situation, and in combat that'd likely be all of them. Depends if you like the 'death spiral', otherwise I'd count them as one time penalties to the next roll.Funnily enough I was thinking of dragons a couple of weeks ago and came up withthis:Breath attack, Immense (counts for strength and conditions, plus a Flaw if the players are canny), Scaly hide, Razor sharp claws, Intelligent, Massive wingsNow in a fight that's a bad mother, PLUS I'd add at least 4 'solid' conditions before take out (this is just my system). For example:Brad the big bad Barbabrian beserkerMuscular, Uncivilised, Warrior, Beserker, Shiny axe, Battered shield (OK he's very, very one dimensional but let's go with it)

Takes on Dergar the dreaded dangerous dragon (as above) in a toe to toe fight:First round (not simultaneous combat, but that works just as well if not better)Brad crouches behind his shield and lashes out at the dragon, do I hit it?3 bonus dice (he's not beserk yet), 2 penalty dice so the 'static' die plus onebonus dieYes, Dergar takes a SLASH TO THE NOSTRIL and rears up, before belching fire down upon Brad, does Brad cover up?1 Bonus, 1 Penalty (Shield and Breath attack, SLASH deemed to have no effect onthis) so static onlyNo, and...Brad gets SCORCHED and his shield CATCHES ON FIRE

Round twoBrad throws down his shield and goes beserk. Leaping at the dragon and cleavingat his underbelly, does Brad hit?4 Bonus, 3 Penalty (Immense, and I'm still going to give it Scaly hide, SCORCHED) for 1 bonus dieYes Brad delivers a GASH TO THE CHESTDergar responds by trying to stomp on Brad, does Brad evade?1 Bonus dice (GASH), 2 Penalty dice (Immense again and Razor sharp claws)No, but... Brad gets CLIPPED by the dragon (a 'lesser' wound because it's a butand not factored into the 'three your out')Round threeBrad is now laying on the floor and swings his axe at the dragon's ankle, does

he hit?4 Bonus dice, 3 Penalty (Scaly hide, SCORCHED, CLIPPED) 1 Bonus dieNo, weakened by his exertions his feeble blow bounces off the creature's scalesDergar now scrapes his massive claw along the ground, does Brad evade?1 Bonus dice (GASH), 4 Penalty die (Immense, Razor sharp claw, SCORCHED, CLIPPED) 3 Penalty dice (ouch!)No, and ... Brad gets PIERCED and CRUSHED!Time to spend an FU Point, Brad wakes up, he doesn't know how many hours later,to find himself alone in the gloom. Picking up his Battered shield he notices a

trail of blood and decides to head for home and see if he can rustle up some willing adventurers to give him a hand.As you can see all the hits to Dergar are fairly substantial (I hope believeableon a creature that size) but from the narration obviously not of a life threatening injury. Brad actually received 5 Conditions but two were of a 'minor' nature and therefore didn't count in his 'death'. Even a one trick pony like Brad didn't stand much chance, and that's before bravery to actually attack the thing and getting close to it in the first place are taken into account. If Brad's third attack had been successful it would have put him in a much better situation (one Condition from glory in theory) probably incapacitate Dergar'smovement I'd go for, making a coup de grace more likely in the next round, but alas not to be.Of course this is just my take, throwing in the narrative approach where the scene grows with each Condition and the position of the characters (I'm imagining Smaug-like size here). Here's another question when a player asks 'Do I kill X?' What's the flip side?If that's the stakes are 'all in', what does No mean?I'd discuss the following with my players prior to play (I play solo with Mythicand with my young daughters so I make these decisions):

How many solid hits to kill a PC?How many solid hits to kill a mook/goon/extra?How many solid hits to kill a lieutenant/named NPC?How many solid hits to kill a 'boss'?Of course not all of these will apply but from here you can extrapolate to massive creatures and their importance to the plot (and the number of players, I'd give Dergar for example 2+2/PC).
