Dear Dr. Ballesteros:
It is a joy to once again gather for the Fourth Annual Archdiocesan Celebration of the Feast of St.
Lawrence Ruiz and St. Peter Calungsod.
These first two Filipino saints have done more than give powerful witness to the rich and deep Cath-
olic faith and history of the Filipino people: as Catholic laymen who embraced the call and grace of
their baptism, they embody the missionary spirit of true Christian discipleship, setting an example
for us all.
We are grateful to you and all who serve in the Archdiocesan Filipino Council for the good work
that has been done over the past year to promote solidarity among our Filipino and Filipino-American brothers and sisters, and to help serve their spiritual and pastoral needs. By nurturing and
strengthening the Catholic faith and culture of the Filipino community, you offer the faithful of the
Archdiocese a living example of a vibrant Catholic culture that reveals the unique beauty of the Gos-pel.
Please be assured of our continued support and prayers.
Sincerely in Christ,
John W. Romanowsky, Ph.D.

Message from Rev. Pete D. LiteralChaplain of Archdiocesan Filipino Council
Associate Pastor of St. Louis ChurchClarksville, MD
My dear friends:
Greetings and Congratulations!
With great pride and devotion, today, we celebrate the Feast of our First Two Filipino Saints, SanLorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod! Your joyful and generous response to celebrate this feast forthe 4th time reflects the spirit Jesus is seeking in the Gospel today. You demonstrate a firm commitmentto bring to life the mission of Archdiocesan Filipino Council. (AFC). Your yes means real yes in pro-moting our vibrant faith and in serving the Filipino communities all over. Following Jesus faithfully re-quires our yes to God and each other, our no to what we should not do. Our response must be firmand our conversion of heart to be ongoing and expansive.
We honor our Filipino Saints, San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod, both laypersons and com-mitted servants of God, because they have lived fully their faith even in the face of hardships and death.
The way they lived their lives and faith gives credence to the truth that in God alone, they found theirstrength. Knowing them well and embracing their great examples should give joyful meaning to our de-
votion and celebration. They responded to the call of God and committed their yes to Him withoutfear. So, let us also respond to God by declaring our own yeses to really mean yes to Him. We re-spond together, as one people. Yes, Lord, we will follow.
As Filipinos in this Archdiocese, our first yes is to promote our devotion to these two Saints amongour families and friends. Confident that we have the support and encouragement of the Archbishop andpriests of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, let us make this Fiesta Celebration, honoring San Lorenzo Ruizand San Pedro Calungsod, a fruitful spiritual gathering of all devotees, Fil-Am families, Fil-Am organiza-tions, and friends of Filipinos.
Because of what you have done, I thank and commend you, especially all current officers of AFC, allleaders of Filipino organizations, and representatives of Fil-Americans from various parishes of AOB,
who become the mission partners of the AFC. I am particularly grateful to the working committees ofAFC, the generous donors, and sponsors of this event. I pray that through the intercession of St. Lo-renzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod, God will bless you hundredfold.
My friends, we are always blessed by God! Let us be grateful and generous! Nothing can stop us torealize our vision and mission, because God, who is gracious and merciful, is with us.
In God alone is our strength.
Yours in Christ,Fr. Pete

4th Archdiocesan Filipino Saints Fiesta Celebration
September 28, 2014 - Cathedral of Mary Our Queen
History of Archdiocesan Filipino Council
The Spark That Ignites the Filipino Solidarity:Birth of the Archdiocesan Filipino Council (AFC)
Archdiocese of Baltimore (AOB)
The Filipinos are constantly grateful to the parishioners of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen for theirhospitality and for being the generous host of our various activities and the culminating Eucharist of the cele-bration of the Filipino Saints Fiesta Celebration (which started then as the San Lorenzo Ruiz Feast Day whichbegan in the year 2011).This religious event becomes a faith transformation experience for all of the Filipi-nos in Maryland that energized them, to serve more the Lord with Joy in the Spirit!
Following this momentous celebration, through the initiatives of Fr. Pete Literal and Fr. John Hurley,CSP (former Executive Director of the Department of Evangelization -AOB) and with the support of Msgr.Bruce Jarboe. The first discernment meeting for the organization of the AFC AOB was convened on April8,2012. After the discernment meeting representatives from various sectors and organizations met again onJune 1, 2012, to choose its leaders and sectoral representatives which eventually led to the launching of theArchdiocesan Filipino Council (AFC) Archdiocese of Baltimore (AOB) with a mission slogan of Vibrant Faith,Solidarity and Service. Dr. Ruben Ballesteros was unanimously chosen as it first president.
The vision of the AFC is...The AFC is committed to serve the Filipino communities/ministries in the Archdiocese of Baltimore by
representing the Filipino Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It will promote Filipino Catholicvalues and active participation among Filipino families in the life of the local Church, under the guidance of theArchdiocesan Department of Evangelization.
Responding to the call of the Church, the AFC will work towards the solidarity of all Filipino Catholic or-ganizations, developing a commitment of Filipino groups towards active participation in the Archdiocese, andtraining Filipino leaders for the continuing work of the mission of the Church in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Now in its 3rdyear of meaningful and fruitful existence, the AFC AOB continue to become the source ofstrength and inspiration for the Filipinos in Maryland in witnessing to their faith in Gods love and providence. The recent call for support for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the AFC AOB through the collabora-tive efforts of its Mission Partners, was able to send more then $ --,000.00 financial aide which were given tothe Archdiocese of Palo, Tacloban City.
As we look back in the eyes of faith, each year as we celebrate the Filipino Saints Fiesta, we are beingled to new challenges as we grow deeper in our understanding and commitment in the mission of evangeliza-tion in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. This year in solidarity with the Filipinos worldwide we are called to ... TOCHOOSE TO BE BRAVE and SEND FORTH AS HEROES OF FAITH!
Mabuhay ang Filipino! Bangon Filipinas!
Filipino Saints Fiesta Celebration
Every Last Sunday of September the Filipinos and Fil-Americans gather as one faith community to cele-
brate and remember the unwavering faith of our fellow Filipino faithful San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro
Calungsod who remain steadfast in their belief and love for Jesus as they proclaim His message of hope, loveand peace in foreign land! The combined celebraon of the martyrdom of San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro
Calungsod has then been known as the Filipino Saints Fiesta Celebraon. This great event starts with a Tridu-
um (3-night) of prayers, songs and reecons on the lives of San Lorenzo and San Pedro Calungsod and ends
with a grand Liturgical Celebraon at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. The Cathedral is always jam -packed
with more than a thousand Filipinos coming from the Archdiocese of Balmore and nearby states. This years gathering has its theme In Him Alone is Our Strength ... a tribute to the unsung heroes of Ty-
phoon Haiyan (Yolanda) and a celebraon of the triumph of the resilient spirit, vibrant faith and solidarity of
all Filipinos. We are all excited and honored to have Archbishop William Lori, Archbishop of Balmore as the
main celebrant and homilist for the Grand Liturgical Celebraon on September 28, 2014 at 2:45 pm. ... concel-
ebrang with Archbishop Lori are Filipino and local priests of the Archdiocese of Balmore.May this experience of coming together to honor San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod be our tes-
mony of our faith and trust in Gods Mercy and Compassion as we thank the world for helping and journeying
with us ... as we rise up and rebuild our naon from the devastaon of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).Mabuhay ang Filipino! Bangon Filipinas!
In the Lord Alone is Our Strength!

On September 29, 1637, San Lorenzo Ruiz professed his faith by martyrdom. He
was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Manila and later canonized on October28,1987. San Lorenzo Ruiz holds the distinction of being the first person
beatified outside the Vatican. He also holds the honor of being the first Filipinosaint, the "most improbable of saints," as Pope John Paul II described him duringthe canonization ceremony.
Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint, was the kind of man who could die for Godand religion a thousand times if he had to. Lorenzo Ruiz was was a layman who
worked as a calligrapher for the Dominican parish of Binondo, Manila. As an "escriba," he was exceptionallygifted, and the Dominican friars relied on him to transcribe baptismal, confirmation and marriage documentsinto the church's official books. He was also an active member of the Marian confraternity, a man the
Dominicans described as someone "they could trust."The son of a Chinese father and Tagala mother who lived in the Parian district outside the city walls of
Manila, Lorenzo Ruiz married a Tagala like his mother and had three children -- two sons and a daughter --whose descendants are currently residents of the same area where the original Ruiz family lived. In 1636, Ruizwas implicated in a murder. He sought help from his Dominican superiors who believed in his innocence. In or-der to escape what they believed would have been an unjust prosecution for their protege, the Spanish friars im-mediately sent Ruiz on a missionary expedition outside of the Philippines. Initially, Ruiz thought he was being
sent to Taiwan, where he believed his Chinese roots would enable him to start a new life. Little did he know thathe and the missionary expedition led by Fray Domingo Ibanez was actually headed for Nagasaki, Japan, wherefeudalism was fanning the flames of Christian persecution. Lorenzo Ruiz was headed straight into the arms ofdeath.
He was arrested almost immediately upon his arrival in Japan in 1636, and subjected to torture by his
Japanese captors for more than a year. Tied upside down by his feet and dropped into a well where sharp stakes
lined the bottom, his torturers would stop just before he would be impaled, and thereupon try to convince him torenounce his faith.
"Deny your faith and we will spare your life," his persecutors said. To which Lorenzo Ruiz answered, "I will never do it. I am a Catholic and happy to die for God. If I have
a thousand lives to offer, I will offer them to God."Existing documents attest that the Japanese promised him a safe trip back home where he could be reu-
nited with his loved ones, but Ruiz staunchly chose to remain faithful to his religion. On September 22, 1637, Ruiz, Fray Domingo and their 14 companions were led up a hill overlooking the
bay of Nagasaki. There they were hung upside down with their heads inside the well. Their temples were slit
open to let blood drip slowly until they died either from loss of blood or asphyxiation. Many died after severaldays. Ruiz died last, on September 29,1637.
"The Lord gives us saints at the right time and God waited 350 years to give us this saint," the Holy
Father then said. "It is the heroism which he demonstrated as a lay witness to the faith... which is very importantin today's world. The witness of San Lorenzo is the testimony we need of courage without measure to showus that it is possible. Faith and life for Lorenzo was synonymous and inseparable. Life without faith wouldhave been without value...he proved that sanctity and heroism are there for anybody and the final victory is
made to size for each one of us."

His LIfeSan Pedro Calungsod (spelled Calonsor in Spanish records) was born ca. 1655. Historical records never mentioned his exactplace of origin and merely identified him as Bisaya. Historical research, however, identifies Cebu as his birthplace.Few details of his early life prior to missionary work and death are known. It is probable that he received basic education a t aJesuit boarding school, mastering the Catechism and learning to communicate in Spanish. He likely honed his skills in draw-ing, painting, singing, acting, and carpentry as these were necessary in missionary work. Calungsod would have been ex-pected to have some aptitude in serving in the Tridentine Mass (now known as the Extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.San Pedro Calungsod, then around 14, was among the exemplary young catechists chosen to accompany the Jesuits in theirmission to the Ladrones Islands (Islas de los Ladrones or Isles of Thieves). In 1668, Calungsod travelled with Spanish Jesuitmissionaries to these islands, renamed the Marianas Islands (Las Islas de Mariana) the year before in honour of both theBlessed Virgin Mary and of the Queen Regent of Spain, Maria Ana of Austria, who funded their voyage. Calungsod and SanVitores went to Guam to catechize the native Chamorros.
Saint Pedro Calungsod sacristan and missionary catechist, who along with Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered reli-gious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672.While in Guam, Calungsod preached Christianity to the Chamorro people through catechism, while baptizing infants, childrenand adults at the risk and expense of being persecuted and eventually murdered. Through Calungsod and San Vitores' mis-sionary efforts, many native Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism.Missionary life was difficult as provisions did not a rrive regularly, the jungles and terrain was difficult to traverse, and the islandswere frequently devastated by typhoons. Despite all these, the mission persevered, and was able to convert a significant num-ber of localsMartyrdom
A Chinese named Choco, a criminal from Manila who was exiled in Guam began spreading rumors that the baptismal waterused by missionaries was poisonous. As some sickly Chamorro infants who were baptized eventually died, many believed thestory and held the missionaries responsible. Choco was readily supported by the macanjas (medicine men) and the urritaos
(young males) who despised the missionaries. In their search for a runaway companion named Esteban, Calungsod and San Vitores came to the village of Tumon, Guam on 2 April 1672. There they learnt that the wifeof the village chief Matapang gave birth to a daughter, and they immediately went to baptize the child. Influenced by the calumnies of Choco, the chief strongly opposed; togive Mata'pang some time to calm down, the missionaries gathered the children and some adults of the village at the nearby sh ore and started chanting with them thetenets of the Catholic religion. They invited Mata'pang to join them, but he shouted back that he was angry with God and was fed up with Christian teachings.Determined to kill the missionaries, Mata'pang went away and tried to enlist another villager, named Hirao, who was not a Christian. Hirao initially refused, mindful of themissionaries' kindness towards the natives, but when Mata'pang branded him a coward, he became piqued and capitulated. Meanwhile, during that brief absence o fMata'pang from his hut, San Vitores and Calungsod baptized the baby girl, with the consent of her Christian mother.
When Mata'pang learnt of his daughter's baptism, he became even more furious. He violently hurled spears first at Pedro, who was able to dodge the spears. Witnessesclaim that Calungsod could have escaped the attack, but did not want to leave San Vitores alone. Those who knew Calungsod personally meanwhile believed that he couldhave defeated the aggressors with weapons; San Vitores however banned h is companions to carry arms. Calungsod was hit in the chest by a spear and he fell to theground, then Hirao immediately charged towards him and finished him off with machete blow to the head. San Vitores absolved Calungsod before he too was killed.Mata'pang took San Vitores' crucifix and pounded it with a stone whilst blaspheming God. Both assassins then denuded the corpses of Calungsod and San Vitroes, tiedlarge stones to their feet, brought them out to sea on their proas and threw them into the water. The Catholic Church considers Calungsod's martyrdom as committed In Odium Fidei ('In Hatred of the Faith'), referring to the religious persecution endured by the personin evangelization.BeatificationA month after the martyrdom of San Vitores and Calungsod, a process for beatification was initiated but only for San Vitores. Political and religious turmoil, however, de-layed and halted the process. When Hagta was preparing for its 20th anniversary as a diocese in 1981, the 1673 beatification cause of Padre Diego Luis de San Vitoreswas rediscovered in old manuscripts and revived until San Vitores was finally beatified on 6 October 1985. This gave recognition to Calungsod, paving the way for his ownbeatification. In 1980, then-Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal asked permission from the Vatican to initiate the beatification and canonization cause of Pedro Calungsod. In March1997, the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the acts of the diocesan beatification process. That same year, Cardinal Vidal appointed Fr. IldebrandoLeyson as vice-postulator for the cause, tasked with compiling a Positio Super Martyrio (position regarding the martyrdom) to be scrutinized by the Congregation. Theposition, which relied heavily on the documentation of San Vitores' beatification, was completed in 1999.Wanting to include young Asian laypersons in his first beatification for the Jubilee Year 2000, John Paul II paid particular attention to the cause of Calungsod. In January2000, he approved the decree super martyrio (concerning the martyrdom) of Calungsod, setting his beatification for 5 March 2000 at Saint Peter's Square in Rome. Calung-sod was formally beatified on 5 March 2000 by Blessed Pope John Paul II. San Pedro Calungsod was officially canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica inVatican City on 21 October 2012.Regarding Calungsod's charitable works and virtuous deeds, Pope John Paul II declared:...From his childhood, Pedro Calungsod declared himself unwaveringly for Christ and responded generously to his call. Young people today can draw encouragement andstrength from the example of Pedro, whose love of Jesus inspired him to devote his teenage years to teaching the faith as a lay ca techist. Leaving family and friends be-hind, Pedro willingly accepted the challenge put to him by Fr. Diego de San Vitores to join him on the Mission to the Chamorros. In a spirit of faith, marked by strong Eucha-ristic and Marian devotion, Pedro undertook the demanding work asked of him and bravely faced the many obstacles and difficulties he met. In the face of imminent danger,Pedro would not forsake Fr. Diego, but as a "good soldier of Christ" preferred to die at the missionary's side.Shortly before his scheduled canonization, a Triduum of masses in honour of Calungsod were celebrated in the Basilica of Sain t Augustine, the Church of the Ges and thePapal Basilica of Saint Mary Major from 18-20 October. A wooden image of Calungsod approved by and flown in from the Archdiocese of Cebu was displayed for publicveneration. Archbishop Emeritus of Manila, Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales presided over the 20 October mass, while Philippine Vice-President Jejomar Binay led the Philip-pine delegation along with Ambassador to the Holy See, Mercedes Arrastia Tuason.SainthoodA statue of Calungsod featured in an earlier model. On 19 December 2011, the Holy See officially approved the miracle qualifying Calungsod for sainthood by the RomanCatholic Church. The recognized miracle dates from 26 March 2003, when a woman from Leyte who was pronounced clinically dead by accred ited physicians two hoursafter a heart attack was revived when an attending physician invoked Calungsod's intercession.Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the declaration ceremony on behalf of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He later revealed that Pope Benedict XVI approvedand signed the official promulgation decrees recognizing the miracles as authentic and worthy of belief. The College of Cardinals were then sent a dossier on the newsaints, and they were asked to indicate their approval. On 18 February 2012, after the Consistory for the Creation of Cardinals, Cardinal Amato formally petitioned PopeBenedict XVI to announce the canonization of the new saints. The Pope set the da te for the canonization on 21 October 2012 (World Mission Sunday), 340 years after
Calungsod's death. On 21 October 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Calungsod in Saint Peter's Square. The Pope donned a pearl-studded mitre and a cream pleated Papal fanon, a spe-cial vestment reserved only for the pontiff in the most solemn and rare liturgical occasions. Filipino Cardinal Ricardo Jamin Vidal concelebrated with Pope Benedict XVI atthe official canonization Mass for Calungsod while among the seven new saints canonized, Calungsod was the only one without a first class relic exposed for venerationsince his body was thrown into the sea. The cutlass knife, a second-class relic used to hack Calungsod's head and neck however was retrieved by Cardinal Ricardo Vidalfrom Guam. During the papal homily, Pope Benedict XVI maintained that Calungsod received the Sacrament of Absolution from Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores beforehis martyrdom and death. After Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, Calungsod is the second Filipino to be declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Martyrology celebrates Calungsod's feastalong with Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores every 2 April.
