Students from 15 area elementary schools took part in the annual Earnest Cialone Chess tournament held at the Evans Boys & Girls Club on May 20.

2016 Elementary Chess Tourney Held at Boys & Girls Club

With 184 elementary students participating, the fi fth annual city-wide Chess Tourney was held at Evans Boys & Girls Club on May 11. The event was established by Tim Higgins, David Israel and Ernest Cialone in 2011. “We look forward to hosting this event every year” said Tim Higgins, unit director of the Evans Boys & Girls Club. “It’s great to see all the different schools represented and the eagerness of all the students participating” he added. The event started with 40 competitors in 2011. That number grew to 54 in 2012. By 2013, the size of the tourney doubled to over 100 students. In 2014, there were 140 participants, and last year the number reached the 200 mark. Chess continues to grow in popularity among elementary aged students. Through the efforts of volunteers like David Israel, the program has expanded throughout Fort Smith schools. Several of the teams wore specially designed t-shirts during this year’s competition. Participants play four matches within a designated time frame. Schools participating included Carnall, Euper Lane, Cook, Howard, Orr, St. Boniface, Beard, Woods, Trusty, Sutton, Spradling, Morrison, Cavanaugh, Ballman and Barling. Seven students went undefeated during the tourney, including Cole Elwonger, Nathan Fuhrman, Ellia Crase, Dayen Bradley, Khalil Anderson, Robbie Clegg and Ricardo Riveria. Each of these received medallions for their winning scores. Barling was crowned overall school champion and was presented the traveling team trophy. The program emphasizes self-discipline, concentration, focus and sportsmanship. It also introduces students to the Boys & Girls Club. Volunteers and teachers provide meals and snack for the participants. Sam’s Club helped support the event with volunteer manpower.
