INTRODUCTION:
Thank you for purchasing FS2CREW: PMDG J41 VOICE COMMANDER EDITION. This is one of the
most exciting FS2Crew releases yet as it’s the first time FS2Crew has been able to interface
directly with a PMDG aircraft without having to use simulated mouse clicks or key presses. This
makes for integration that is very “clean” and “seamless.”
The SOPs modeled in the J41 Edition of FS2Crew are derived from the PMDG AOM manual,
which in turn were derived from Capt. Robert Randazzo’s former airline. While programming
FS2Crew for the J41, we attempted to model these SOPs as closely as possible within the limits
of what can be accomplished within the limits of a desktop computer.
This version of FS2Crew also includes a special version of FS VIDEO MARSHALLER, and we hope
you enjoy that new utility as well. Just remember that if using FS VIDEO MARSHALLER, FSX
needs to be in Windowed mode!
Again, thank you for purchasing FS2Crew for the awesome PMDG J41! FS2Crew is a very small
indie developer, and we appreciate your business and support as we attempt to service the
needs of the “hard-core” enthusiast flight sim market.
Keep the blue side up!

CREDITS:
FS2Crew for the J41 could never have happened without the support of the following people:
Robert Randazzo and the entire PMDG dev team, especially Vin, Henning and Vengelis who
offered their own personal time to assist FS2Crew in the development of the J41 Edition.
Ernie Alston also assisted with helping integrate FS2Crew with J41’s FMC.
Photo credits (box art and Config Manager) go to Andres Ramirez.
An additional thanks goes to all the FS2Crew voice actors and beta testers!
SUPPORT:
The FS2Crew team works hard to provide its international user base with the friendliest and
most prompt support in the business.
Please address all support issues to the FS2Crew Support Forum located at Avsim.
An Avsim membership, which is available for free, is required to post.
Please allow up to 24 hours for a response owing to international time zone differences.
If you experience difficulties with the forum, please contact FS2Crew support via the Contact
form on the FS2Crew website.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
Important: When loading FSX for the first time with FS2Crew Voice Commander J41
Edition installed, be sure to run FSX in Windowed mode.
The reason is because if the Audio Engine generates any error messages, the error messages
will only be visible if running in Windowed mode, not Full-Screen Mode.
Please report any error messages to the FS2Crew Forum or email FS2Crew Support. Most
issues can be solved by installing (or re-installing) the latest version of DirectX and ensuring
your audio and video drivers are up-to-date.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 4
Also be sure to send FS2Crew a copy of your Black Box and Cockpit Voice Recorder to assist in
troubleshooting.
Both files are available are in:
C:\Users\<---USER NAME--->\AppData\Roaming (if using Vista or Win 7)
\FS2Crew2010\Versions\Jetstream\
Note that AppData is a “hidden folder”, so you won’t be able to see it initially. Just
type\AppData\ after your user name in your Address Bar.
FAQS:
Situation:
After loading the J41 (in windowed mode), I get an error message related to a missing DLL.
Solution:
Install the March 2009 or later version of DirectX redistributable from Microsoft via
here.
Situation: My frame rates dropped in half after loading the PMDG J41.
Solution:
Ensure “Language” in the Windows Speech Recognition tab is set to English – US.
Situation: FS Video Marshaller causes my screen to go black.
Solution:
Make sure you are in Windowed mode, not Full Screen mode when signaling the
marshaller.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 5
Situation: The VOICE button on the Main Panel does not stay on.
Solution:
Ensure “Language” in the Windows Speech Recognition tab is set to English – US (not
English – UK). If using XP, ensure the SAPI speech engine is installed.
Situation: The Flight Crew volume is hard to hear.
Solution:
The J41 has a noisy cockpit. Using a Headset is HIGHLY recommended (make sure you
select HS on the FS2Crew Main Panel so you can route the FO’s audio through the
headset).
If you do not own a headset and do not wish to buy one, try turning down the Engine
sound volume slider via the MSFS sound controls menu.
Also set the FS2Crew volume to Max on the FS2Crew Config panel.
Situation: When I click the gauge used to open the FS2Crew Main Panel, nothing happens.
Solution:
Open the panel.cfg files for the J41 with notepad. Do you see FS2Crew window and
gauge entries on it? If not, it means FS2Crew did not install properly. In all likelihood,
you have a very common FSX registry problem. Please run the Registry Repair Tool
available in the FS2Crew 2010 Configuration Manager and re-install FS2Crew.
Other major possibility: The Battery Switches are not on. THE AIRCRAFT MUST HAVE
POWER FOR THE FS2CREW CLICK AREA TO WORK ON THE WEATHER RADAR PANEL!!!
Situation: The speech recognition system is not detecting my voice very well.
Solution:
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 6
Be sure to run a “Voice Training Session” via the Windows Speech Recognition panel at
least once. Also be sure to use a good quality microphone. When speaking, be sure to
enunciate clearly and try to speak using an American accent.
Situation: I commanded the FO to make a heading/altitude/speed/course change, but the value
“ran-away” and wouldn’t stop changing.
Solution:
Toggle the VOICE button off then back on and this will stop the runaway loop. Also,
make sure you use the correct syntax –that’s very important!
Situation: The Speech Recognition system seems too “sensitive”. It’s even picking up engine
noise.
Solution:
Go to your Windows Speech Recognition settings panel and check that your microphone
sensitivity has not been reset to full. Do this AFTER the FS2Crew Main Panel has been
loaded.
TIPS FOR USING VOICE CONTROL:
Voice control is not always 100 percent accurate. While speech recognition technology is
getting pretty good, computers are still not as good as the human ear. And even the human ear
makes mistakes.
During development, FS2Crew used Windows 7. We found the accuracy of voice recognition to
be extremely good. We recommend all users upgrade to Windows 7.
Here are some tips to help improve speech recognition accuracy:
Run the Voice Training Profile in the Microsoft Speech Recognition properties.
Speak clearly and distinctly.
Use a high quality microphone.
Try to reduce ambient background noise.
If you forget the required checklist response, say “NEXT” or “CHECKED” to skip to the
checklist item!
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 7
THE WAY FS2CREW HANDLES VOICE RECOGNITION:
To improve the end-user’s experience, and to ensure minimum voice command “false
positives”, FS2Crew has taken the following steps.
(By “false positive” we mean an uncommanded voice command, such as “gear down”, being
detected by the voice recognition system and implemented, even when the user didn’t actually
say “gear down”.)
First, FS2Crew has tied many voice commands to select conditions to reduce the likelihood of a
false positive from undermining your in-game experience. For example, the “gear up”
command will only work under select circumstances. So even though the speech recognition
system might somehow hear “gear up”, our system helps prevent an unintentional “gear up”
command from being implemented by your FO, for example, when you’re doing the pre-flight
events or when you’re taxiing.
Note: Autopilot commands will only work while airborne.
THE AUTOPILOT AND VOICE CONTROL:
Generally, as in real-world flying, when the Autopilot is OFF, the Pilot Monitoring will set the
autopilot as per the Pilot Flying’s commands.
The logic is because the Pilot Flying (which in FS2Crew is you, the Captain) will have his hands
on the control column, and will therefore be unable to manipulate the autopilot easily.
Conversely, when the autopilot is ON, the Pilot Flying would set the autopilot panel himself, but
he would announce what he is doing so as to keep the Pilot Monitoring in the loop. This is part
of good Crew Resource Management (CRM).
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 8
Example:
If the Autopilot is OFF:
Pilot Flying: “Bug Speed 170”.
Pilot Not Flying then dials Speed 170 in the autopilot.
Pilot Monitoring: “Speed 170 Set”.
Pilot Flying: “Check”.
If the Autopilot is ON:
Pilot Flying: “Speed 170”
Pilot Flying manually sets speed to 170 in the autopilot panel.
Pilot Monitoring: “Speed 170, checked”
Other examples if the autopilot is ON that can be announced by the user:
“Heading 150”, “Course 200,” “Flight 140”, “Vertical Speed Up 1000”, “Altitude 3500”
Please see Step 23 in the Tutorial flight for the complete list of commands!!!

TUTORIAL FLIGHT
STEP 1 (Speech Recognition Engine Setup):
Vista / Windows 7 Users:
1. Your Speech Recognizer must be set to ENGLISH – US, not English – UK or some other language.
In your Window Control Panel -> Speech Properties -> Speech Recognition panel it should look
like this:
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 10
2. DO NOT FORGET TO RUN THE VOICE TRAINING!!!
3. If you do not have an English version of Windows 7 or Vista, you will not be able to set your
Speech Recognizer to English – US.
If you own a non-English Vista or Win 7 Ultimate, you’ll need to download the English language
pack from Microsoft.
If you do not own Ultimate, you can try switching your Windows display language to English
using a 3rd party program called Vistalizator:
http://www.froggie.sk/
INSTALL VISTALIZATOR AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! But a lot of FS2Crew users have
successfully used Vistalizator in the past and reported good results!!!- Bryan
XP Users:
1. XP users may or may not have the required SAPI engine installed on their computer.
To check if you already have SAPI voice recognition software on your computer, open the
Windows Control Panel and click the Speech icon if it’s there. If you can see a Speech
Recognition tab, then SAPI is already installed on your computer.
If you’re an XP owner, you can download and install SAPI via this link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/4/3/B4314928-7B71-4336-9DE7-
6FA4CF00B7B3/SpeechSDK51.exe
2. Your Speech Properties panel in XP should look like this:
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 11
3. DO NOT FORGET TO TRAIN YOUR VOICE PROFILE!
STEP 2 (Adding FS2Crew to the Panel.cfg):
1. First, some background information: FS2Crew consists of gauge files. These gauge files only get
loaded when they are included on the host aircraft’s panel.cfg file. If these gauge files are not
present on the host aircraft’s panel.cfg file, then FS2Crew will not load when you load the J-41.
2. The PMDG J-41 has three separate panel.cfg files, which are located in:
Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\PMDG_JS4100\panel\
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 12
The three panel.cfg’s are called:
o panel.cfg
o panel_HIDEF.cfg
o panel_LODEF.cfg
You can open these cfg files with Notepad.
The only config file that Flight Simulator X will load when you select the J-41 is “panel.cfg”.
3. The FS2Crew installer will automatically swap the “panel_HIDEF.cfg” and “panel_LODEF.cfg”
files with versions that contain the required FS2Crew entries.
FS2Crew will make a backup copy of both these config files.
Note that FS2Crew will not automatically replace the main panel.cfg file with one that contains
the required FS2Crew entries because FS2Crew does not know if your panel.cfg is the High
Definition Displays or Normal Resolution Displays version.
4. Next we must get the contents of the FS2Crew updated versions of either the HIDEF or
LODEF.cfg files into the main panel.cfg file.
5. To do that, open the PMDG J-41 CONFIGURATION MANAGER and then click SAVE
CONFIGURATION. Doing that will automatically update your main panel.cfg so it will contain the
contents of either the HIDEF or LODEF panel.cfg files as selected in the PANEL OPTIONS section
located in the upper left hand corner of the CONFIGURATION MANAGER.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 13
6. If everything went correctly, the WINDOWS SECTION in your main panel.cfg file should look like
this with FS2Crew entries for Window 05 and Window 06 as highlighted in red.
[Window Titles]
//-----------------------------------------------------
Window00=GPS Window01=Ramp Manager Window02=FMS Window03=RMU Window04=FCS Window05=FS2Crew Main Panel Window06=FS2Crew Configuration Panel Window08=FS Video Marshaller
7. Important Note: FS2Crew swaps the panel.cfg files in their entirety. SO IF YOU MADE CUSTOM
MODIFICATIONS TO YOUR PANEL CFG FILE THEY WILL BE LOST. YOU WILL NEED TO RE-ADD
THEM!!!

STEP 3 (Configuring Transition Altitude/Transition Level Calls
and Hard Mute):
1. Open the FSX Settings – Controls – Buttons/Keys menu.
Create a new keyboard/joystick assignment for:
ALTERNATE STATIC SOURCE (ON/OFF)
ALTIMETER (STANDARD PRESSURE)
ALTIMETER (RESET)
You can choose any key or joystick button you like.
ALTERNATE STATIC SOURCE -> Used as an additional way to toggle on/off Hard Mute
ALTIMETER (STANDARD PRESSURE) - > Used to generate the FO’s call when passing the
Transition altitude.
ALTIMETER (RESET) - > Used to generate the FO’s call when passing the Transition level.
Remember, you can choose any key or joystick button you like! - Bryan

STEP 4 (Setting if the Reality XP Weather Radar):
1. FS2Crew supports FO integration with the Reality XP Weather Radar.
If you own the Reality XP Weather Radar, please open your RXPWX500.INI file and add these
two specific keyboard assignments in the Keyboard section:
WX5_MAIN_MODE_NEXT=CTRL+W
WX5_MAIN_MODE_PREV=CTRL+M
The RXPWX500 INI file can be accessed via the Start -> RealityXP -> Settings Folder or via here:
ProgramData\Reality XP\Common\Settings
STEP 5 (Setting up FS Video Marshaller):
1. The PMDG J41 Edition of FS2Crew includes a special version of FS Video Marshaller. Using FS
Video Marshaller is optional. You are not required to use it.
If you decide to use FS Video Marshaller in game, FSX must be in WINDOWED MODE,
not full screen mode.
2. To setup FS Video Marshaller, uncheck “Pause on task switch” as shown below:
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 16
To toggle (open and close) the FS Video Marshaller control panel after the aircraft has
loaded, you need to assign a joystick or keyboard button to the CLUTCH assignment in
your Flight Simulator Controls menu as depicted in the screen shots below:
If you’re using a non-English version of Flight Simulator, CLUTCH (like the clutch used to
change gears in an automobile, or the rotor clutch in a helicopter) is:
French: Embrayage German: Kupplung Spanish: Embrague
Japanese: クラッチ Italian: Rotore elicottero (attivo/disattivo) Polish: Sprzęgło

4. Drag the video player window to another location or monitor.
5. Left click the left screw again to close the video player window (you may need to click it twice as
your FS window may be out of focus).
STEP 8 (Getting setup for Flight):
1. Printout the J-41 Normal Checklist from the PMDG J-41 Manual. The procedures used in
FS2Crew closely follow those published in the PMDG J-41 manuals, especially the AOM. In a few
select situations, however, FS2Crew had to divert from the published procedures due to flight
simulator imposed limitations.
2. Load FSX.
3. Load the PMDG J-41 and select your desired airport and gate/ramp location.
4. If you experience any problems try: not using saved situation files and never load the J41 from a
tower, spot or another aircraft’s VC cockpit.
You can find the Checklist on Page 11 of the PMDG AOM Manual! Print it out!!! - Bryan
STEP 9 (The FS2Crew Panel Selector):
1. Using your MIDDLE MOUSE button, click in the middle area of the Weather Radar display.

However, if the autopilot values “runaway” after asking the FO to set the autopilot, you can
toggle the voice engine off and on to break the runaway.
DSP: Toggles green bar on/off that displays what the speech engine detects.
HS: Routes most First Officer audio through your headset. Ensure the audio device associated
with your USB headset is selected in the Headset display in the Configuration panel. First Officer
audio that is not routed through the headset includes situations in which the FO would not be
wearing his headset, such as when he tells you that his external walk around is complete.
FA: Press to contact the FA while in flight.
CFG: Opens FS2Crew Configuration Panel.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 22
CAB: Use the mouse wheel to control the volume of the cabin announcements. The value of the
cabin volume will be displayed in the Display Mode window when the cabin volume is greater
than zero. In the screen shot above, you can see the Cabin PA volume is currently set to 3.
HM: Toggles “Hard Mute” on/off. If Hard Mute is on, the FO will not act on input detected by
the speech recognition engine.
LK: Click to LOCK the Main and CFG Panels (to force them open even when FS automatically
attempts to close them when you change views). Note that when the panels are “Locked”, an =
symbol will appear in the lower right hand section of the main display area. This is depicted in
the screen shot above.
As a backup in case users cannot open the FS2Crew Panel Switcher (due to a possible a conflict
with “Walk and Follow”, users can also RIGHT CLICK the LK button to toggle open/close the
FS2Crew Panel Switcher.
LT: Toggles night lighting on/off.
RIGHT SCREW: Left click to the close the Main Panel.
3. If the FS2Crew Main Panel does not open, please do this:
i) Check your PMDG J-41 panel.cfg to ensure it has FS2Crew window and gauge
entries on it.
ii) Ensure the batteries are on!!! The FS2Crew clickspot on the Weather Radar
will not work if the aircraft is unpowered!!!
Anyone care to guess how many emails I’ll get about this? Remember, the batteries must be
ON before the FS2Crew click spots on the Weather Radar panel will work!!! - Bryan
4. Additional symbology:
Plus (+) symbol: Indicates the FO is performing a flow.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 23
STEP 11 (SOFT AND HARD MUTING):
1. Should you wish you prevent the virtual First Officer from acting on “any” speech commands the
speech recognition detects, you can ‘mute’ the FO. You would typically use the mute function
when communicating with on-line ATC or if running a brief (should you wish to do that).
SOFT MUTE: Push and hold the button you assigned to the mute function in the FS2Crew J41
Configuration Manager. Release that button to unmute the FO.
HARD MUTE: Left click the LK button on the Main Panel to toggle on/off the permanent mute
function. Note that you can assign a joystick or keypress to control Hard Mute. SEE STEP 3 for
more information.
An “M” symbol will appear in the top right hand corner of the main display area when mute is
functioning.
STEP 12 (The FS2Crew Config Panel):
1. Open the FS2Crew Configuration Panel by either clicking the CFG button on the Main Panel or by
right-clicking the middle area of the Weather Radar display.

STEP 14 (Cockpit Preparations):
1. Perform the COCKPIT ACCEPTANCE CHECK AND COCKPIT PREPERATION CHECK as described in
the PMDG J41 AOM. You can perform this check as “read-and-do” or you can do it as a flow and
then double check it with the checklist. You need to perform all the items in the checklist
marked with a – C in the right column.
The FS2Crew First Officer will perform the items marked with a – F.
FO’S COCKPIT PREP ITEMS
- OXYGEN TEST
- GEAR WARNING TEST
- LEFT/RIGHT FIRE DETECTION TEST
- STANDBY BATTERY POWER TEST
- CAP TEST
- COAMING PANEL LIGHTS TEST
- OVERHEAD DETECTION FAULT TEST

Note that the checklist items for the ACCEPTANCE and COCKPIT PREPERATION in the
PMDG J-41 Normal Checklist are in Upper and Lower case lettering. This means the checklists
are not spoken verbally, but rather done silently.
2. You should complete both the ACCEPTANCE and COCKPIT PREPERATION checks prior to 15
minutes remaining to departure.
3. Run the PRE-FLIGHT BRIEF by saying: “ARE YOU READY FOR THE PREFLIGHT BRIEF”. Complete
the brief by asking “ANY QUESTIONS”. Please refer to the PMDG AOM (Chapter 4 Section E) to
see what items should be covered in the Pre-Flight Brief. It’s highly recommend that you enable
‘mute’ while giving the brief so FS2Crew doesn’t act on anything you say that might be
interpreted by the speech recognition engine as a command.
4. Make sure you enter the landing elevation of your arrival airport in the pressurization controller.
DO NOT FORGET THIS STEP as FS2Crew needs to know your arrival airport’s elevation as it’s
used as part of the calculations for some of the landing and approach calls.
5. With about eight minutes remaining, the Station Attendant will bring the loadsheet into the
cockpit. Note that no loadsheet graphic will become visible. Use the loadsheet that’s already in
the cockpit on the left panel.
Accepted speech recognition phrases for the Pre-Flight section:
When communicating with the ground crew and FA, you can respond using these phrases:
YES
YES WE ARE

FORGET TO SET IT!!! - Bryan
7. When the FO’s turn flow is complete, an * symbol will appear behind TURN in the Main Display.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 28
8. No later than 10 minutes prior to departure, complete the DEPARTURE PREPERATION AND
PLANNING DUTIES. You should perform these duties prior to calling for the Turn Check. When
ready call for the Clearance Brief:
Captain: “ARE YOU READY FOR THE CLEARANCE BRIEF?”
-If you actually want to perform the brief, make sure you hold the MUTE key down.
Please consult the PMDG J41 AOM to see which items you may want to include in the
brief.
Captain: “ANY QUESTIONS?”
FO: “NO QUESTIONS”.
9. Around the 9 minute mark, after you completed the CLEARANCE BRIEF and turn flow, call for the
TURN CHECK by speaking into your microphone: “TURN CHECK” or “TURN CHECK PLEASE”. Run
the checklist with the FO.
Note that the airplane symbol in the checklist means that the checklist item is only done on the
first flight of the day.
10. With 5 minutes remaining, perform your FINAL DEPARTURE PREPARATION duties:

the chocks and ground power unit when you call for the BEFORE START CHECK.
Before Start Checklist Special Response Phrase Note:
CHECKLIST ITEM: FUEL _____ LBS CHECKED -B
Captain’s real-world response phrase to this item in the checklist: “RELEASED WITH
________ POUNDS. _________ POUNDS ON BOARD, CHECKED.”
TRIGGER PHRASE FS2CREW IS LISTENING FOR: “POUNDS CHECKED” or ”POUNDS ON
BOARD, CHECKED”
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 30
If you decide to read back the actual fuel quantity, be sure to pause for a second before
you say “Pounds Checked” or “pounds on Board Checked”. This is to ensure the speech
recognition system can detect the trigger phrase! - Bryan
STEP 15 (Engine Start):
1. Make sure the EGTs are below 200 degrees, the prop is unfeathered, the ignition switch is in the
Normal position and that the condition levers are in taxi.
2. Expected start sequence is #1 then #2 (Left engine then right engine).
3. If desired, open the FS Video Marshaller panel and signal the ground crew that you intend to
start engine #1.
4. Call “CLEAR AND START LEFT” or “START LEFT ENGINE”. The FO will then start the left engine.
Wait for the FO to call “ENGINE STABILZED” before commanding the FO to start the other
engine.
5. After the left engine stabilizes, the following flows are performed:
CAPT’S FLOW AFTER STARTING LEFT ENGINE
- VERIFY ENGINE INDICATIONS IN NORMAL RANGE
- ENSURE ENGINE HYDRAULIC PUMP LIGHT OUT WITH NO FAULT
CAPTIONS
FO’S FLOW AFTER STARTING LEFT ENGINE
- LEFT FUEL STANDBY PUMP OFF
- LEFT GENERATOR ON
- GROUND POWER SWITCH OFF
6. After starting the left engine, signal the ground crew to remove the GPU.
7. Signal the ground crew that you wish to start Engine #2.
8. If using internal batteries for the start, verify that the generator charging current is less than 300
amps.
9. When ready, call “CLEAR AND START RIGHT” or “START RIGHT ENGINE”.
10. The FO will call “CUT-OUT” and “ENGINE STABLE” as appropriate.
11. To abort the start call “ABORT START” or “ABORT ENGINE START”.
Reminder: Start sequence is: Engine #1 (Left Engine), then Engine #2 (Right Engine) - Bryan
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 31
STEP 16 (After Start):
1. After both engines are started and the FO has called “ENGINE STABLE”, perform your After Start
Flow. The FO will automatically perform his After Start Flow when both engines have stabilized.
CAPT’S AFTER START FLOW (BOTH ENGINES STARTED)
- SET FLOWS TO MAX (POSITION 10). ONCE MAX AIRFLOW ACHIEVED,
ADJUST FLOW SELECTOR AS REQUIRED
- ENSURE ALL FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS HAVE NO FLAGS
- ARM SPOILERS
- SETUP WEATHER RADAR IF USING REALITY XP WEATHER RADAR.
- ARM APR SWITCH IF REQUIRED
- RELEASE START LOCKS
IF FIRST FLIGHT OF DAY OR ICING EXPECTED:

IF FIRST FLIGHT OF DAY OR ICING EXPECTED:
-LEFT & RIGHT ENG/ELEV DE-ICE ON (TEST) - AIRFRAME DE-ICE AUTO CYCLE (TEST) -LEFT & RIGHT IGNITION CONTINUOUS (TEST) - UNLOCK GUST HANDLE - LEFT & RIGHT STALL TEST. ANNOUNCE “LIGHTS” - LOCK GUST LOCK*
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 32
*In the real-world, the FO would typically lock the gust lock during his after start flow.
However, I found that it was often impossible to generate enough breakaway power with the gust
lock on in the PMDG J41, so I coded it so the gust lock would be released prior to taxi. - Bryan
2. Call for the After Start Checklist when the FO announces that his After Start flow is complete.
After Start Checklist Special Response Phrase Note:
CHECKLIST ITEM: APR ………… - C
Possible responses:
ARMED

3. The FO will run his Taxi flow after you call for the TAXI CHECK.
FO’S TAXI FLOW
- SELECT FLAPS 9
- UNMUTE THE CAP
- SET THE FLIGHT DIRECTOR TO ALT SEL & HDG SEL (Capt must press GA
first!)
- SET RUNWAY HEADING AND INITIAL ALT (needed until PMDG J41 SP2!)
- RELEASE GUST LOCK
- PA ANNOUNCMENT: FA PREPARE FOR DEPARTURE
- WX RADAR TEST (REALITY XP WX RADAR)
In the real-world, the FO will also set the runway heading and initial altitude during his taxi
flow. The capability is currently coded into FS2Crew, HOWEVER, it will not work until PMDG released
SP2 for the PMDG J41 as it required some coding changes on PMDG’s end. I was hoping that SP2
would happen before I released FS2Crew for the J41, but it didn’t. So all it means is that you have to
manually set the runway heading and initial altitude. - Bryan
Do not forget to press the GO AROUND button IMMEDIATELY after calling for the taxi
checklist, or even before it! If you plan to use the flight director, double check that the FO arms ALT
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 34
SET and HDG on the FD panel. Note that if you press the TOGA button after the FO arms ALT SEL and
HDG, ALT SEL and HDG will disarm!!!- Bryan
4. The FO will read the first line in the TAXI CHECK after completing his flow.

4. The FO will read the first item in the DEPARTURE CHECK when his flow is completed.
5. When the FO reads “THE LINE”, you have three possible responses:
i) HOLD SHORT
ii) POSITION AND HOLD
iii) CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF
6. You must announce “CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF” in order for the FO to continue the checklist
below the line.
7. The items below the line are READ AND DO.
CAPT’S BELOW THE LINE ITEMS (READ AND DO)
- SET IGNITION & ANTI-ICE AS REQUIRED
FO’S BELOW THE LINE ITEMS (READ AND DO)
- IF APR ON, LEFT & RIGHT FLOWS TO 0
- IF APR OFF, LEFT & RIGHT FLOWS TO 3
- CONDITION LEVERS FLIGHT
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 36
Departure Checklist Special Response Phrase Notes:
When the FO reads “IGNITION/ANTI ICE”, you have three possible responses:
i) “NORMAL/OFF” (Ignition is off and anti-ice is off)
ii) “CONTINUOS/OFF” (Ignition is continuous and anti-ice is off)
iii) “CONTINOUS/ON” (Ignition is continuous and anti-ice is on)
IF YOU OWN THROTTE HARDWARE: Your throttle unit may override the FO’s attempts
to set the Condition Lever and Throttle Position. BE MINDFUL OF THAT!!!
STEP 19 (Takeoff Roll):
1. When ready to go, “stand” the power levers by setting them to the 12 o’clock position.
2. Call “SET POWER”.*
3. The FO will then set the power to the desired takeoff torque.
4. The FO will call “POWER SET”.
5. The FO will call “70 KNOTS”.
6. You call “MY COLUMN.”
7. The FO will call “VEE 1 ROTATE” 5 knots prior to V1.
8. Smoothly rotate.
9. To abort the takeoff, call “ABORT ABORT!” and skip to the ROLL OUT procedure. Do not
forget to say “OUT OF REVERSE CONDITION LEVERS TAXI” during the abort phase roll out!
When you call “SET POWER,” the FO will attempt to set full power. However, your
joystick throttle may override the FO. Therefore, when you call “SET POWER,” manually
advance your throttle to the full forward position! - Bryan
THE FO WILL NOT SET POWER UNTIL YOU’VE TURNED ON THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS
(LANDING, STROBES, ETC). IF THE FO REMINDS YOU TO CHECK THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS, TURN
THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS ON, THEN CALL “SET POWER” AGAIN!!!!
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 37
STEP 20 (Initial Climb):
1. When a positive rate of climb has been established, call “POSITIVE RATE GEAR UP”.
FO’S FLOW WITH GEAR UP CALL
- GEAR UP
- YAW DAMPER ON
- IF FLOWS OFF, SET FLOWS TO 10 UNTIL MAX AIRFLOW, THEN SET
FLOWS TO 3
- VAPOR CYCLE OFF
STEP 21 (Cleanup):
1. Passing the Acceleration Altitude, which is usually 1000 to 1500 feet above the runway, call
“FLAPS UP AFTER TAKEOFF CHECK”.
After passing the acceleration altitude, accelerate to 170 knots. When you reach
170 knots, call “I A S” and the IAS pitch speed will automatically be set to 170 knots climb
speed. If you decide to engage the autopilot at this point (“AUTOPILOT ON), you’ll be all
set!!! Just ensure that ALT SEL is armed on the Flight Director panel first! - Bryan
STEP 22 (After Takeoff):
1. The FO will perform his After Takeoff flow after climbing through 1500 feet above the
runway.
CAPT’S AFTER TAKEOFF FLOW
- DISARM GROUND SPOILER
- SET CLIMB POWER (EGT TO LOWER WHITE HASH. MAKE SURE YOU DO
THIS BEFORE THE FO ATTEMPTS TO SET THE CONDITION LEVERS OR
YOU MAY EXCEED MAX EGT TEMPS).
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 38
FO’S AFTER TAKEOFF FLOW
- APR SWITCH OFF
- LANDING, TAXI & ICE OBSERVATION LIGHTS OFF
- CONDITION LEVERS 96 TO 100 PERCENT
- PROP SYNC ON
2. The FO will read the AFTER TAKEOFF CHECK silently but will announce when it is complete.
IF THE FO IS NOT PERFORMING ACTIONS OR MAKING CALLS THAT ARE TRIGGERED BY
ALTITUDES, MAKE SURE YOUR ALTITUDE UNITS IN THE FSX GENERAL OPTIONS MENU IS SET
TO FEET, NOT METRIC. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR RUSSIAN AND CHINESE USERS.

To inform the FA of an event (such as go-around, etc), use your own words, BUT you must end your phrase with one of the following phrases.
You MUST pause a second before saying one of these phrases so the speech recognition engine can properly detect it.
I will keep you updated
I will keep you in the loop
I will keep you informed
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 41
STEP 24 (Enroute Climb):
1. Passing 10,000 feet the FO will perform the following actions:
CAPT’S ACTIONS PASSING 10,000
- SEATBELT SIGNS OFF IF DESIRED
FO’S ACTIONS PASSING 10,000
- CONSPIC LIGHTS OFF
- TAIL FLOOD LIGHT TO NAV
- CYCLE SEATBELT SWITCH OFF THEN ON TO NOTIFY FA STERILE COCKPIT
OVER
2. Passing the TRANSITION ALTITUDE:
Announce: “TRANSITION ALTITUDE. 2992/1013 SET”.
Next: Press the button on your keyboard or joystick that you assigned to: ALTIMETER
(STANDARD PRESSURE) in the FSX keyboard commands menu.
When you press that button, the FO will confirm the altimeter setting.
STEP 25 (Cruise):
1. Monitor instruments.
STEP 26 (Descent Preparations prior to the TOD):
1. Perform your Descent Approach Cockpit Setup. Say: “LET’S START SETTING UP FOR THE
APPROACH” or “APPROACH ITEMS”. That phrase is the trigger for the FO to perform the
following actions:
FO’S ACTIONS DURING ARRIVAL SETUP
- CABIN ANNOUNCEMENT: FLIGHT ATTENDANT PREPARE FOR ARRIVAL
- SET V TARGET, VREF, V2 AND VYSE*
- ARM SPOILERS
- ARM APR
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 42
- ICE AOA ON/OFF AS REQUIRED
- ANNOUNCE “APPROACH SETUP COMPLETE”
*The V Speeds the FO will set are based on info published information contained in the
PMDG manuals The FO will set Icing speeds if the ICING AOA button is illuminated! - Bryan
CAPT’S ACTIONS DURING ARRIVAL SETUP
- SEATBELT SIGNS ON
- SET INBOUND COURSE. IF USING FMS, SELECT MAGENTA NEEDLE.
- SET FREQUENCIES FOR APPROACH.
- IDENTIFY NAVAIDS WHERE POSSIBLE.
- SELECT THE APPROACH TYPE ON THE FS2CREW CONFIG PANEL:
IF YOU WILL BE SHOOTING AN ILS (PRECISION) APPROACH,
ENSURE THAT YOU SET THE PMDG J41 DH SELECTOR TO THE
DECISION HEIGHT. IT’LL ALMOST ALWAYS BE 200 FEET.
NOTE THAT YOU CAN ONLY SET DH ON THE EADI WHEN BELOW
15,000 FEET, SO YOU MAY NEED TO DEFER THIS ITEM
DEPENDING ON YOUR CRUISE ALTITUDE.
DOUBLE CHECK THAT THE LANDING ELEVATION IN THE
PRESSURIZATION CONTROLLER IS SET.
FS2CREW COMPUTES THE “DECISION ALTITUDE” BY ADDING
THE DH VALUE TO THE LANDING ELEVATION ENTERED IN THE
PRESSURIZATION CONTROLLER.
IF SHOOTING A NON-PRECISION APPROACH, YOU WILL NEED TO
SET THE MDA (MINIMUM DESCENT ALTITUDE) IN THE MDA BOX
ON THE CONFIGURATION PANEL.
2. After finishing the setup, brief for the approach by saying: “ARE YOU READY FOR THE ARRIVAL
AND APPROACH BRIEF?”
3. Complete the brief by saying: “ANY QUESTIONS”?
4. After the Approach Brief is complete, call for the Descent/Approach check by saying “DESCENT
APPROACH CHECK” or “DESCENT APPROACH CHECK PLEASE”.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 43
STEP 27 (Approach):
1. Passing the TRANSITION LEVEL:
Announce: “TRANSITION LEVEL. *LOCAL ALTIMETER SETTING+ SET”.
Next: Press the button on your keyboard or joystick that you assigned to: ALTIMETER (RESET) if
the FSX keyboard commands menu.
When you press that button, the FO will confirm the altimeter setting.
2. Referencing the desired profile, make the following callouts:
- CONDITION LEVERS FLIGHT
- FLAPS 9/ FLAPS 9 PLEASE
- FLAPS 15/ FLAPS 15 PLEASE
- FLAPS 25/ FLAPS 25 PLEASE
- GEAR DOWN
- SET MISSED APPROACH ALTITUDE
3. The FO will turn off Prop Sync when the Condition Levers are set to Flight.
4. When cleared for the approach, arm APP on the FD.
5. The FO will call “GLIDESLOPE/LOCALISER ALIVE” if shooting a Precision Approach.
6. In real-life, when the aircraft is cleared for the approach by ATC, the FO will perform the actions
listed below. However, because FS2Crew can’t “read” if you’ve been cleared for the approach,
the FO will perform the associated actions when Flaps 9 are selected instead:
FO’S ACTIONS WHEN FLAPS 9 SELECTED DURING APPROACH
- PA ANNOUNCEMENT: FLIGHT ATTENDANT BE SEATED
- TAXI LIGHT ON
*The FO will call either “RUNWAY IN SIGHT” OR “LIGHTS IN SIGHT”. Due to tech
limitations, FS2Crew cannot determine if the runway is literally in sight the same way human eyes
can when looking at the screen. So I coded a ‘best guess’ formula to trigger the call. The code
assumes you’re approaching the airport on a three degree angle, so at 30 miles out you should be
around 10,000 feet. It’s the best I could do given what limited data is available. - Bryan
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 44
STEP 28 (Final Approach):
1. After calling for Flaps 25, calling for the LANDING CHECK by saying “LANDING CHECK” or
“LANDING CHECK PLEASE”.
FOR “LANDING GEAR… DOWN FOR RUNWAY…. – B” RESPONSE, YOU MUST ADD A
LEADING ZERO (0) IF THE RUNWAY NUMBER IS LESS THAN 10.
EXAMPLE: IF THE LANDING RUNWAY IS 9 LEFT, YOU WOULD NEED TO SAY: “DOWN FOR RUNWAY
ZERO NINE LEFT”.
In real-life, the FO/PNF would typically turn on the landing light when landing clearance
has been received. In FS2Crew, however, the FO will turn on the landing lights at 1000 feet -
Bryan
STEP 29 (Short Final):
1. 200 feet above the runway (please note that this value is determined based on being 200 feet
above the arrival elevation selected in the Pressurization controller), the FO will call “YAW
DAMPER OFF”.
2. Turn the Yaw Damper off. If you don’t turn off the Yaw Damper by 100 feet, the FO will do it for
you.
3. The FO will start calling your speed in relation to VREF. Example: Plus 10, Plus 5, etc. Aim to
cross the threshold at Plus 0.
STEP 30 (Rollout):
1. The FO will call “70 KNOTS”.
2. When out of reverse, call “OUT OF REVERSE, CONDITIONS LEVERS TAXI”.
3. The FO will then set the condition levers to taxi.
The trigger for the FO to start his timing for the 3 minute engine cool-down period is
when you call “OUT OF REVERSE, CONDITIONS LEVERS TAXI”. Do not forget to make this call! -
Bryan
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 45
STEP 31 (After Landing):
1. When clear of the active runway, call “AFTER LANDING CHECK” or “AFTER LANDING CHECK
PLEASE”.
2. The FO will then perform his After Landing flow and Checklist silently. The FO will announce
when the AFTER LANDING CHECK is complete.
CAPT’S AFTER LANDING FLOW
- STROBE, LANDING & CONSPIC LIGHTS OFF
- SPOILERS OFF
- WEATHER RADAR STANDBY
- RE-CAGE STANDBY ATTITUDE INDICATOR
FO’S AFTER LANDING FLOW
- FLAPS UP
- GUST LOCKS ON AND CENTER FLIGHT CONTROLS*
- LEFT & RIGHT FLOWS TO 3
- TRANSPONDER STANDBY
- MUTE CAP
- APR OFF
IF NOT IN ICING CONDITIONS:
WINDSHIELD HEAT OFF
AIR DATA SWITCHES OFF
PROP DEICE OFF
ENG/ELEV DEICE OFF
- IGNITION NORMAL
*In real-life, the FO/PNF would set the gust locks to on during the taxi in. But I deferred
this item to the FO’s shutdown flow because, when the gust locks are in, it’s often difficult to
generate enough power to taxi in FSX! - Bryan
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 46
STEP 32 (Taxi In):
1. To prevent blinding the ground crew, call “TAXI LIGHT OFF” or manually turn off the taxi light. 2. FS2Crew does not model single-engine operators because FSX ground handling dynamics make
controlling the aircraft on one engine very difficult.
STEP 33 (Shutdown):
1. When parked at the stand, announce “PARKING BRAKE ON SHUTDOWN CHECK” or “SHUTDOWN CHECK” or “SHUTDOWN CHECK PLEASE”.
2. Signal the ground crew to insert the chocks. 3. The FO will then check that the engines have had three minutes to cool down, and he will then
start his flow:
CAPT’S SHUTDOWN FLOW
- PARKING BRAKE ON
- SELECT FULL REVERSE AS ENGINE SLOWS THROUGH 50% AFTER FO
PUSHES STOP BUTTONS
FO’S SHUTDOWN FLOW
- RECIRC FANS OFF
- CABIN HEAT OFF
- CABIN COOLING OFF
- LEFT & RIGHT FLOW SELECTORS OFF
- EMERGENCY LIGHT OFF
- LEFT & RIGHT AVIONICS MASTER OFF
- LEFT & RIGHT GENERATORS OFF
- SHUTDOWN BOTH ENGINES
- SEATBELT SIGNS OFF
- DE-ICE/ANTI-ICE SWITCH OFF
- BEACON OFF
- GUST LOCKS ON
4. If desired, signal the ground crew to connect the GPU.
STEP 34 (Debrief Items):
1. At the end of the flight, discuss any issues you had with the flight with your FO. It suggested that you hold down the Mute key if you actually do this so the speech recognition doesn’t try to act on anything you say.
FS2Crew PMDG J41 Voice Version 1.02 Page 47
STEP 35 (Secure Check or Thru-Flight):
1. If it’s the last flight of the day, run the SECURE CHECK. It’s a ‘read-and-do’ check. If continuing on for another leg, there is no need to reload the aircraft. Instead, simply return to Step 13 and start again from the top. Note that the FO’s pre-flight actions are abridged as not all items need to necessarily be done on a thru-flight.
GO AROUND PROCEDURES:
1. To initiate a go around, make the following commands:
“MISSED APPROACH”
Then make the following commands in this order:
“SET POWER, FLAPS 9”
“POSITVE RATE, GEAR UP”
“FLAPS UP GO AROUND MISSED APPROACH CHECK”
Next, run through checklist using responses printed on PMDG J41 checklist.
2. Notes:
If an approach brief not required, respond “NOT APPLICABLE.”
Upon completing the missed approach checklist, the FO will ask you if you want to divert to the alternate or try the approach again.
To divert, respond: “WE’LL DIVERT TO THE ALTERNATE”.
The Display Mode will then change to DESCENT APPROACH SETUP.
To try the approach again, reply: “WE’LL TRY THE APPROACH AGAIN”. The Checklist Mode will then change to the landing check mode.
-MANUAL END-
