HELLO PROCTOR COMMUNITY,
August is al l about community here at
United Lutheran Church. In the weeks
ahead we have three special events that give
us the opportunity to celebrate our
congregation and neighborhood. As the
summer continues, we are al l pulled in
different directions. Family vacations, class
reunions, time at the cabin, time in the
garden – so many ways to refresh our l ives.
But often these act ivi ties take us away from
our church home. Attendance is always
lower in the summer because people
have different commitments. It is with
that in mind that I a sk you to make a
priority of at least one of our great
times together in August.
Every year we have the joy of
worshipping on the shore of Little
Grand Lake at the Sampo Beach Finnish
American Club. There is nothing quite l ike
si tting by the water, singing favorite songs
of fai th, hearing the Word of God, and
sharing a meal. Many of us have fond
memories of summer camps from years
gone by. Our time together at Sampo Beach
gives us that feel ings while st i l l being close
to Proctor. And no day at the lake would be
complete without food. Bring your favorite
potluck dish to share. Many of you know
my fondness for deviled eggs. They are
always a hit at the picnic! Join you r church
fr iends on Sunday August 4th at 10am for
this annual tradition.
The next big community event starts the
day after our t ime at Sampo Beach. Proctor
Day Camp has grown to be a wonderful
event for the families of our community.
Our own members along with friends and
family from the area trust us with their
elementary kids for a week of songs and
crafts, games and food, and of course an
inspiring Bible study. This year we have the
opportunity to lead Day Camp in -house.
High schoolers and youth
from our confirmation
program will be the small
group leaders. Dedicated
adults wil l facil itate the
crafts, activi ties, and
games. The regular crew of
kitchen volunteers wil l be
supplemented by first -time volunteers. We
wil l miss the energy and leadership that the
VLM counselors have brought in past years.
But I bel ieve that the increased leadershi p
from our members wil l only benefi t Day
Camp and encourage us to be more active
in our fai th. Proctor Day Camp is August
5-9. See our website or Facebook page for
registrat ion details.
The third big community event in August is
the Hoghead Parade. For the past few years
we have entered a float in the parade, and
walked the route handing out ice -cold water
We welcome EVERYONE! August 2019

bottles to the community . Each of these
water bottles has a custom wrap that invites
people to join us for worship and
fel lowship. We quench the physica l thirst
of the parade-goers, while g iving them an
option to quench their thirst for a faith -
fi l led community.
All three of these community events are
beloved at United Lutheran Church of
Proctor. And there is a place for you to
part icipate in each one. Jo in us as we
celebrate the many blessings God has
bestowed on us, and help us to share those
blessings with our friends al l around
Proctor.
