Jim Collins STATE DEPUTY Dear Brother Knights,

Worthy Grand Knights and District Deputies, your councils and districts

should be in the final planning stages of the March Membership Recruitment

Church Drive to be held on Founders Day weekend of March 29. Along with

the handouts on the council’s recent accomplishments, make sure the

recruiters have an adequate supply of Form 100s, and arrange for pulpit

announcements.

After the announcement by your pastor or fellow Knight at the end of each

Mass, you can direct attention to the members who will be in front of the

church entrance with prospect cards and membership documents and to

answer your questions. I need to emphasize, asking a Catholic man to join

our ranks is not just handing him a card after Mass with a name and phone

number he can call. We must take the initiative in the recruitment process to

explain who the Knights of Columbus really are, and that is not possible with

the few minutes you have outside the church after Mass.

If you’re interested in helping those in need, serving your parish, growing in

your faith, or having exclusive access to top-rated insurance protection for

your family, then the Knights of Columbus is the organization for you. We

need to emphasize becoming a Knight of Columbus can transform your life.

Plan to have an open house following Mass at the parish hall and invite our

Field Agents to participate in the recruitment drives. Their knowledge and

training will enhance the recruitment process and they can explain our top

quality insurance program that will protect our families.

Becoming a Knight of Columbus can transform your life. As a Knight, you

have the opportunity to support your parish, give back to your community,

grow in your faith, and gain exclusive access to our top-rated insurance

No Catholic man is too busy to be an active Knight of Columbus,

and yes some will not join, but it is our responsibility to emphasize how

they can make a difference in the community and involve their family.

In fact, giving just one full day a year to the activities of the council can

make an enormous difference in in their parish and community.

These are just some of the reasons to become a Knight.

• Support the parish with its needs.

• Help meet the needs of those in the local community.

• Provide “Coats for Kids” and “Food for Families”.

• Support programs that benefit people with intellectual disabilities.

• Aid victims of natural disasters and other catastrophic events, local

and worldwide.

• Donate wheelchairs to people without mobility at home and abroad.

• Save lives through initiatives such as the “Ultrasound Program”.

Brother Knights, the Order is growing in membership every day and

with four months left in this fraternal year we have the opportunity to

make a difference in Texas with continued membership growth,

charitable giving, and protection for our families in Texas. Ask that

parishioner you see every Sunday at Mass to consider joining the

Knights of Columbus.

Thanks for all you do!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day … from the Texas State Council

Vivat Jesus!

Lent is the Time

for Focus We Can Make a Difference

Terry Fruge, State Membership Director Terry Fruge

As things have wrapped-up in Sochi for the Winter Olympics, we prepare

for the upcoming Lenten Season by saying good-bye to the celebrating of

Christmas and New Years, on Mardi Gras. We then prepare through fasting,

abstinence, prayerful periods, and recruiting to make a difference during the

next six weeks.

We can make a difference by being a better person and possibly give up a

few vices, while getting “in tune” with our spiritual side. While many councils’

will be doing Fish Fries, it is an excellent opportunity to sit down and visit with

the Catholic Gentlemen that attend, get to know them a little better, and see if

they have a desire to also make a difference. Would they like to help us work

with Special Olympics, Wounded Warriors, Wheelchair Mission, or possibly

Pro-Life issues?

The District Deputies will be needing information from every council on

their Spring Church Drive success. This will flow through the Diocesan

Deputies to Tom Watters, State Membership Team Member, and on to

Supreme. We would like to know what was accomplished in February, and

the final tally at the end of March.

We are currently two-thirds through this Fraternal Year, and our State

Recruitment numbers are all around 66%, or better, which puts us right on

target to finish strong these final four months, and qualify for the “Circle ff

Honor”, where Texas belongs. I would love to see our Worthy State Deputy,

Jim Collins, receive this prestigious honor as he wraps-up two great years as

our leader. He and Duchess have logged thousands of miles on our behalf,

and this would be a fitting send-off.

Many of you are on the brink of qualifying for the many Recruitment

Incentives that are listed in the Star Guide, or the State Website. Your Grand

Knight or Financial Secretary can provide you a list of these. Please email

copies of new Form 100’s to [email protected], as soon as

possible following a First Degree to insure our new Knight begins his coverage

of benefits immediately. Let’s show our Brother Catholics how we make a

difference, and they may well want to join us.

“Son of God” Movie In Theaters February 28

This major motion picture event, an experience

created to be shared among families and

communities across the U.S., brings the story of

Jesus’ life to audiences through compelling cinematic

storytelling that is both powerful and inspirational.

Now, the larger-than-life story of The New Testament

gets a larger-than life treatment in the stand-alone

feature SON OF GOD. Told with the scope and scale

of an action epic, the film features powerful

performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects

and a rich orchestral score from Oscar®-winner Hans

Zimmer. Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado portrays

Jesus as the film spans from his humble birth through

his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection.

Ash

Wednesday

Marks the

Beginning

of Lent March 5, 2014 is Ash Wednesday which marks

the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of

penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for

Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through

which we attain redemption.

WHY WE RECEIVE ASHES

Following the example of the Nine vites, who did

penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are

marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds

us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this

when we are told,

"Remember, Man is dust, and

unto dust you shall return.“

Ashes are a symbol of penance made

sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they

help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The

distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages

past. Christians who had committed grave faults

performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the

Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to

wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled

over them ashes made from the palms from the

previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the

Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned

out of the church because of their sins -- just as

Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise

because of his disobedience. The penitents did not

enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after

having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days'

penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all

Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came

to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the

distribution of ashes was followed by a penitential

procession.

K of C Insurance Program Introduces Two New Policy Riders As part of the Order’s continued effort to provide the best

service to its members and their families, the Knights of

Columbus Insurance program now offers two accelerated

death benefit policy riders. The first is the Chronic Illnes

Accelerated Death Benefit (CI-ADB), and the second is the

Terminal Illness Accelerated Death benefit (TI-ADB). These

two new life riders provide additional living benefits on a

permanent life insurance plan. These riders are designed to

allow an insured to have access to death benefit money when

certain conditions are met before death. And best of all, there

are no premiums charged for these riders. See your agent.

State FreeMarch 1st

Ash Wednesday continued

the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year.

The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are

scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes

symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a

reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those

who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine

mercy is of utmost importance during the season of

Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy

during the entire Lenten season with reflection,

prayer and penance.

At Masses and services of worship on this day,

ashes are imposed on the foreheads of the faithful (or

on the tonsure spots, in the case of some clergy). The

priest, minister, or in some cases officiating

layperson, marks the forehead of each participant

with black ashes in the sign of the cross, which the

worshipper traditionally retains until it wears off. The

act echoes the ancient Near Eastern tradition of

throwing ashes over one's head to signify repentance

before God (as related in the Bible). The priest or

minister says one or both of the following when

applying the ashes: Remember that thou art dust,

and to dust thou shalt return.—Genesis 3:19, and

Repent, and believe the Gospel.—Mark 1:15

The liturgical imposition of ashes on Ash

Wednesday is a sacramental, not a sacrament, and

in the Catholic understanding of the term the ashes.

Remember that thou art

dust, and to dust thou

shalt return.

—Genesis 3:19

Repent, and believe the

Gospel.

—Mark 1:15

themselves are also a sacramental. The ashes are

blessed according to various rites proper to each

liturgical tradition, sometimes involving the use of

Holy Water. In some churches, they are mixed with a

small amount of water[14] or olive oil,[15] which serve

as a fixative. In most liturgies for Ash Wednesday, the

Penitential psalms are read; Psalm 51 (LXX Psalm

50) is especially associated with this day.[16] The

service also often includes a corporate confession

rite.

In the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is

observed by fasting, abstinence from meat, and

repentance, a day of contemplating one's

transgressions. In the medieval period, Ash

Wednesday was the required annual day of

penitential confession occurring after fasting and the

remittance of the tithe. In other Christian

denominations these practices are optional, with the

main focus being on repentance. On Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the

ages of 18 and 59 (whose health enables them to do

so) are permitted to consume only one full meal,

which may be supplemented by two smaller meals,

which together should not equal the full meal. Some

Catholics will go beyond the minimum obligations

demanded by the Church and undertake a complete

fast or a bread and water fast. Ash Wednesday and

Good Friday are also days of abstinence from meat

(mammals and fowl), as are all Fridays during Lent.

Some Catholics continue fasting throughout Lent, as

was the Church's traditional requirement, concluding

only after the celebration of the Easter Vigil.

The earliest date Ash Wednesday can occur is

February 4 (in a common year with Easter on March

22), which happened in 1573, 1668, 1761 and 1818

and will next occur in 2285. The latest date is March

10 (when Easter Day falls on April 25) which occurred

in 1546, 1641, 1736, 1886 and 1943.

MARCH 29th MARKS 132 YEARS:

On March 29, 1882, now known as Founders’

Day, the Connecticut legislature granted a charter to

the Knights of Columbus, formally establishing it as a

legal corporation, thus, allowing our founder Father

Michael J. McGivney to realize his dream of an

organization of Catholic men dedicated to promoting

faith and fraternity while providing protection for

members’ families The Order’s principles at that time

were “Unity” and“ Charity”. Since then, the concepts

of “Fraternity” and “Patriotism” were added. Each of

these major concepts have and continue to play a

major role in the Order’s ceremonials.

Since the founding of our Order 132 years ago by

a parish priest, the Knights of Columbus has

maintained a strong and close relationship with our

priests. As a result of this relationship and notable

anniversary, our Assembly hosted the Clergy

Appreciation Dinner during January.

Today, the Knights of Columbus is an international

Catholic organization with 1.8 million members

dedicated to working for the Catholic Church,

her and asked her, in the name of the blessed Trinity, to consent to become the

Texas State Council Convention 2014

To all Brother Knights of Texas:

Duchess and I welcome you to the 110th Annual

Meeting of the Texas State Council. We are here

because “We Are Called” to the principles of our

Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

Thank you to our State Chaplain Archbishop

Gustavo Garcia-Siller, Associate State Chaplain

Bishop George Sheltz, our priests, Deacons and

council chaplains throughout the state of Texas for

their continued support and spiritual guidance as we

continue to serve our church and communities.

Our thanks to the Diocese of Fort Worth, host

convention committee, for putting together an

outstanding weekend. Knights and their families

across this state will renew friendships, share our

accomplishments and conduct the business of the

Texas State Council.

Friday afternoon is the annual convention awards

ceremony where we will recognize the 2013-2014

achievements of the Knights and Councils across this

great state. Your attendance in support of those that

have achieved these awards in membership,

charitable giving and programs will be appreciated.

This convention is not the end of our fraternal year

but the beginning of new ideas, new projects and

increased recruitment that will lead us into the next

generation of new Knights. Continued membership

growth and charitable giving to our church and

community is a priority.

We reached the 100,000th member milestone in

September 2013, to be the largest jurisdiction in the

Americas. Our church and communities will become

stronger as our membership and new councils

continue to grow and promote the principles of the

Order. The vision of our founder, Venerable Father

Michael J. McGivney is strong and vibrant in Texas

because of your commitment.

Brother Knights you and your families are the

“Best of the Best” and it has been a pleasure serving

the Order with you. Our best wishes for a successful

and memorable state convention.

Fraternally, Jim Collins, State Deputy
