We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven. Have mercy on us, Lord. We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved your Holy Spirit. Have mercy on us, Lord. We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives, We confess to you, Lord. Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people, We confess to you, Lord. Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves, We confess to you, Lord. Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work, We confess to you, Lord. Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us, We confess to you, Lord. Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty, Accept our repentance, Lord. For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us, Accept our repentance, Lord. For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of concern for those who come after us, Accept our repentance, Lord. Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us; Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great. Accomplish in us the work of your salvation, at we may show forth your glory in the world. By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord, Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection. ~BCP, page 267 March, 2013 The Canticle

Please plan to be a part of the cathedral parish family as we gather for lunch and our Annual Parish Meeting on March 10. Vestry members

will be elected and reports heard.

Vestry NomiNatioNs for 2013

Dale M. “Mikey” Corcoran Jr. I am a born-and-raised New Orleanian, but lived away from the city for approximately 10 years. When I moved back to New Orleans back in 2007, I was in need of some direction and guidance on the spiritual side of my life. Thankfully I moved into a place that was only two blocks from the Cathedral. One Sunday in ‘07 I decided to accompany a friend of mine to church, and I was instantly drawn to the atmosphere of gratitude, welcoming, and support that I felt from the clergy and membership alike. I have been coming to Christ Church ever since, and have been singing in the choir since the summer of 2009. Last year I also volunteered at the Mardi Gras jambalaya fund raiser on Bacchus Sunday. I received my Bachelors Degree in Geography from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2000, and spent 5-plus years serving as an officer in the United States Army. I am currently the General Manager for the Rental Division at Beerman Precision, an industrial power tool supplier, and I am still serving in the military as an Army Reservist. I’m currently the commander of my reserve unit, which is based out of Hattiesburg, MS.

Sandy Jackson I was born in New Orleans and grew up in Jefferson Parish. I was raised in the Roman Catholic Church and began attending Christ Church Cathedral with my husband, Henry, shortly before our marriage here in 1999. I was received into the Episcopal Church several years ago. I am a graduate of DOCC, co-chair of the flower guild, serve on the hospitality committee, the landscaping committee and the care team. I am a research administrator for the section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Tulane University. Away from work I enjoy cooking, entertaining friends, gardening and traveling. I am a member and past officer of the master gardeners of New Orleans and several other garden societies. Lately I have been engaged with other members of the Cathedral in the redevelopment and maintenance of the Cathedral grounds. I look forward to serving on the vestry.

Karen Whitfield I am a life-long Episcopalian and have been a member of Christ Church Cathedral since 1988. My husband, Ed, and I were married at the Cathedral in 1990 by Dean Lowry. Over the years, I have served on the Stewardship, Legal, and Insurance Committees, and Ed and I have served as Oblation Bearers. Last Fall, I participated in the VisionQuest initiative as a member of the interview team. I am an attorney with a B.S. in Finance from LSU and a J.D. from the University of Houston. I was born and raised in New Orleans and have practiced law here for the past 25 years, before retiring several months ago. I am honored to be nominated for the Vestry, and I look forward to serving in any way I can.

Choral EvEnsong ~ MarCh 4The choir will sing the service of Evensong on Sunday, March 4, at 4:00 PM. Mr. Samuel Liegeon, Young Artist in Residence at St. Louis Cathedral will once again bring his extraordinary talent to the organ. The Magnificat and Nunc dimittis will be sung by the choir and organ, in alternatum style (the choir and organ taking turns expressing the text of these two traditional canticles). You won’t want to miss this - congre-gations in the United States don’t often get the privilege of experiencing this kind of musical and liturgical expression.

Delicious food and extraordinary support from our Cathedral family and neighbors made this year’s Carnival fundraiser a great success. We achieved over $16,000 in sales with net proceeds for the Cathedral of $5,060; a 60% increase over last year.

A special thanks goes to Jeff Baron, the Crescent Pie and Sausage Company staff and our volunteers, Mikey Corcoran, Ed Freddie, Boyd and Meryl Fink, Bart Folse, Mary Baldwin Kennedy, Julie Mabus, Jay Miller, Dick and Vicki Moreland, Pearla Motumba, Eric and Emily Nethercott, and Jim Wessell, for their tireless work through Carnival. We also thank the many others who offered to volunteer, the Cathedral clergy and staff, and everyone who supported the event by joining us for great food and drinks. The growing success of our Carnival fundraiser is because of

everyone’s support and enthusiasm. We appreciate it, thank you all and are looking forward to our third year being even better.

In answer to the question “Where do we get this great food the rest of the year?”: Crescent Pie and Sausage Company is at 4400 Banks Street, just behind Jesuit. Please visit for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.

Thanks again for everyone’s support and Congratulations on a great Carnival fundraiser.

In addition to the General Confession which we say during Sunday mass, some people make a practice of making regular private confessions. This is particularly appropriate during Lent. If you would like to schedule an appointment to make a confession, or learn more about this sacramental act, feel free to discuss it with any of the Cathedral priests.

Music Notes...

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commend-able, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

This past month has been a little rough for me. I didn’t realize how much I physically and spiritually depend on playing the organ on an almost daily basis. Since the big organ has been encased in plastic, it has been unavailable to me and to our worshiping community. So I’ve been thinking a lot about my ministry apart from organ performance.

And, an event that occurred over Super Bowl weekend helped me to remember why I do what I do. Not only do I perform music, I choose it. After years of training and experience, and with the relationships I have developed with the clergy, I’m pretty attuned to the liturgical themes that permeate the cathedral. But listening to Lil Wayne scream expletives and vile imagery from the Elms mansion woke me up a bit. If I had children, or if my very puritanical mother had been visiting, I would have had to leave my home for the evening. Not only was I struck with the downright rudeness of such vile language blasting through a public place, it struck home that what we take in with our ears becomes what we think; it forms the basis of our spirituality. If Lil Wayne truly believes what he says, I feel sorry for anyone who has any dealings with him. His disrespect for humankind is complete. One of our primary goals needs to be our witness to our community - not only musically - but in all that we do.

If the organ is working, I invite you to Choral Evensong on March 3. Our dear friend and former administrator, The Rev’d Rob Courtney is the guest preacher. Samuel Liegeon, the Young Artist in Residence at St. Louis Cathedral once again graces us with his talent. If the organ isn’t yet working, perhaps we can try to do something later in the year.

In any case, during this season of Lent, I hope that the music you hear at Christ Church Cathedral is a blessing. I hope you’ll take time to read the texts of the sung pieces. I have. I pray that your mind is exercised, your spirit renewed and your heart made glad.

Greetings from Advent House:We are once again in the Season of Lent. A time when we have been taught to take time to reflect on our life, take on or give up something that will help us remember that sacrifice is important, make a confession and to be willing to make amends where needed. If we do this, it will probably not be an easy 40 days for us as individuals, nor was it an easy time for our Lord. However it will be a “Holy Time”.

For your reflection time… My suggestion comes as a quote from a book I am reading for pleasure. The title of the book is Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear.

“If we can come up with our questions, the questions will do their work. Truth walks toward us on the paths of our questions. As soon as you think you have the answer you have closed the path and may miss vital new information. Wait awhile in the stillness and do not rush to conclusions no matter how uncomfortable the unknowing.”

For your Lenten disciplines Advent House offers the following:

THE BOOK CLUB has resumed. We meet on Mondays from 1 to 2:30. For Lent we are discussing The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. Have you ever pondered the question of what heaven is and what is hell? In The Great Divorce C.S. Lewis again employs his formidable talent for fable and allegory. The writer, in a dream, boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon and embarks on an incredible voyage through Heaven and Hell. He meets a host of supernatural beings far removed from his expectations and comes to significant realizations about the ultimate consequences of everyday behavior.

ADVENT HOUSE, GOSPEL STUDY:Beginning on January 24, 2013, Advent House will continue to offer scripture study twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays at 6:00 PM. Dick Moreland will convene the study group. This series will again look at the Gospels for the upcoming Sunday:

February 28 Luke 13:1-9 March 14 John 12:1-8March 28 No Class April 11 John 21:1-19April 25 John 13: 31-35

If you are interested in a morning or early afternoon session, please contact Linda Nelson (501.258.7384; [email protected]) or Dick Moreland (301.537.1065; [email protected]) and let us know.

QUIET THURSDAYS AT ADVENT HOUSE Many of us are seeking ways to prepare to observe with devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection. Advent House has a tradition of opening its doors during Lent to those who want an opportunity for prayer and contemplation. This year, you are invited to come to Advent House, a ministry of Christ Church Cathedral, located at 1637 7th Street in NO. We will begin with Morning Prayer at 9:30 AM followed by a period of quiet on each Thursday in Lent. You can end your time with the Eucharist in the Cathedral Chapel at 12:15 or continue until afternoon. Bring a sack lunch or go to the Cor-ner Grocery or the Fresh Market; water and coffee will be provided. Advent House will remain open to visitors until 5:00 PM each Thursday. No reservation is needed. The Quiet Days began on February 21 and will continue every Thursday through March 21. Call Linda at 504-895-0553 if more information is needed.

Dream Group meets the first Monday of each month. We will meet Monday, March 4 from 6 to 7:30pm at Advent House. Join us if you are able.
