HOLT CATthe New C-Series…

HOLT CAT unveiled the new CAT® C-Series Skid Steer and Multi-Terrain Loaders in the dirt demo days that were held in San Antonio, Tyler, Waco, Irving, Austin and Fort Worth. “Our customers were very excited about the new machines; they really liked the spacious cab and air ride seat of the C-Series Skid Steer Loader,” says Bill Bordelon, Southern Region General Construction Sales Representative.

C-Series Skid Steer and Multi-Terrain Loaders differ

significantly from the B-Series models. Some of the new features include the redesigned cab that provides more operator comfort and greater visibility. In addition, the cab is sealed and pressurized, which reduces noise and keeps air in the cab cleaner. This feature makes the C-Series the industry leader in comfort. The operator station also has the industries first optional air ride seat.

Ben Davidson, Northern Region General Construction Sales Manager adds, “ We had a lot of quality customers

who were interested in learning about the enhanced features of these new models. We’ve already sold several of the demo machines.”

The unveiling of the CAT C-Series Skid Steer and Multi-Terrain Loaders gave us the opportunity to showcase the versatility of these products and work tools. At each of our demo locations, customers were able to test drive equipment, visit with our sales, parts and service staff and enjoy a BBQ lunch under a shady tent.

wheel loaders — the 924H, 928Hz and 930H — feature the Cat® C6.6 engine with ACERT™ Technology for responsive powerand low emissions. The 924H and 930H also feature VersaLink™ loader linkage, whichcombines Integrated Toolcarrier versatility and parallel lift with superior speed and force. For expanded versatility, the two loaders now have standard third function hydraulics for operating hydromechanical tools. The 928Hz retains the traditional Z-Bar linkage for excellent bucket loading. Compared to the previous model, it has four percent more engine power for high productivity in demanding tasks.

All three loaders also feature the H-Series cab and operator station, designed for easy access and egress and for efficient operation throughout an entire shift. The H-Series loaders also have new heavy-duty hydraulic coolers and brushless alternators for enhanced reliability and extended durability.

The 924H has net engine power of 128 horsepower and both the 928Hz and 930H have net engine power of 149 horsepower. General purpose bucket capacities for the three loaders range from 2.2 cubic yards to 3.25 cubic yards. The new loaders replace G-Series loaders — 924G, 928Gz and 930G.

- For dedicated applications the machines can be equipped with pin-on work tools, such as a bucket or fork with top clamp. This provides exceptional breakout force, tipping load and dump height for fast cycle times. High Lift VersaLink optionsare available for special applications that require more reach and lift height.

- Both the 924H and 930H have an optional adjustable flow third function hydraulics system to optimize work tool performance. It provides proportional control of work tools to match power to application speed. To expand versatility even further, an optional fourth valve is available on all models, and fifth and sixth hydraulics are available on the 930H. Fifth and sixth function hydraulics enable use of a fully adjustable snow blade and wing as well as a variety of other hydromechanical work tools.

Operator comfort and efficiency-Easieraccessfromeithersideofthecab

- Quiet, roomy and well-ventilated cab

- Single, low-effort joystick for lift and tilt functions also integrates directional and transmission control for reduced operator fatigue. An optional joystick combines lift and tilt functions with third function auxiliary hydraulic controls. This allows the operator to maintain control of the loader linkage while operating hydromechanical tools such as buckets with top clamps.

- The 930H is available with QuickSteer mode, which enables higher productivity

and efficiency with less operator fatigue when loading trucks. QuickSteer allows full articulation by turning the steering wheel only 50 degrees.

- The optional Ride Control System cushions bucket loads and provides a comfortable ride and excellent material retention. Four nitrogen charged accumulators set to different pressures enable optimum cushioning over uneven terrain. The system operates automatically. An optional rear view camera uses a closed circuit video monitoring system. As many as three cameras can be mounted on the machine frame. Objects can be viewed on a color LCD monitor in the cab.

- The 930H and 928Hz can be equipped with log skidder tires for improved traction and soft underfoot conditions. Underground utility contractors oftenuse such a configuration. New wide fork carriages suitable for handling pipe and a new multi-purpose bucket will be available with the skidder tire configuration.

HOLT CAT® Power Systems Divisionrecently held special product demonstrations at the Longview store of its Caterpillar® engine-based electric power generator product linesforcustomersinNorthEastTexas.CAT power generators are used in a variety of

applications from backup power for industry to electricity for oil and gas wells. HOLT CAT Power Systems is a premium supplier ofthese generators.“Electric power generators represent a

critical need for many organizations like hospitals and schools,” says Bob Stratton, Vice President and General Manager of thePowerSystemsDivision.“Asthepopulationof Texas has grown, our product services offerings have grown, also.”Tom Angotti, Business Unit manager for

the Power Generation group, says disasterslike Hurricane Katrina emphasize the need for reliable backup power sources. The event provided an opportunity for HOLT

CAT to display its power generation products, Tom says, “but it also gave us the opportunity to listen to the needs of customers.”Bert Fulgium, Power Systems Division

northern region service manager, says backup power is more important than ever in today’s business environment. “Having the functionality of electric power generation is very important to about every type of business from hospitals and manufacturing plants to food service operations,” he says. Four different product areas were set up

Making the right connection of machine and work tool can help maximize productivity on the jobsite.

First, select a machine that allows easy exit and entry of the machine and offers good visibility from the operator’s seat to the work tool. Its coupler configuration should allow an operator unobstructed access to the seat and a clear view to the work tool.

Second, determine the type of coupler the machine will need. The universal coupler

interface and low profile side plates of mechanical quick couplers allow the most

tools to match properly while keeping dirt and debris out. Two high-leverage handles serve to engage or disengage the tools.

Hydraulic quick couplers have a rocker switch in the cab that controls two hydraulic cylinders(thatreplacethemanualhandlesofamechanicalcoupler),allowingtheoperatorto change tools while in the cab. Hydraulic cylinders control the vertical wedge pins that lock the tool in place.

High-Flow and Standard-Flow Hydraulics Hydraulic power not only provides power

to the wheels, but it also operates the loader to enable lifting and tilting, and runs the auxiliary circuit, which drives work tools.

The criteria for “high-flow” or “standard-flow” may differ from one manufacturer to another. Typically, high-flow circuits exceed 26 gallons per minute and 3,300 psi. High-flow machines designated “XPS” (33gallons/minute at 4,050 psi) are capable ofmaintaining maximum pressure regardless of work tool speed or working conditions, at low or high idle. The typical flow for a standard-flow machine is 22 gallons per minute.

Types of Tools Work tools fall into two groups: fabricated

and hydromechanical. Buckets and forks, which do not have moving parts controlled by the operator, are “fabricated” tools. Hydro-mechanical work tools include multi-purpose buckets, mulchers, hammers, augers, grapples, rakes and other attachments that are powered by the machine’s auxiliary hydraulics.

Fabricated work tools are the most universal and the machine from one manufacturer can attach the buckets or forks made by another manufacturer with very little trouble, as

they do not require additional hydraulics to operate.

Hydromechanical work tools have more specific requirements. Therefore, most equipment manufacturers recommend that machines use the hydromechanical work tools from the same manufacturer. Why? Hydraulic hose hook-ups and fittings are of the same strength and brand, ensuring a proper match and tight fit to reduce leaks and loss of pressure. Machines and work tools are designed to work as a system, and these pairings are intended to maximize the horsepower and hydraulic capabilities.

in a variety of configurations. Augers are a good example: Direct drive or planetary drive augers are available for standard hydraulic flow machines. These configurations are designed to maximize the capabilities of the hydraulic circuit and are intended for medium-duty applications. A high-flow planetary-driven auger on a high-flow hydraulic machine would be appropriate for extreme-duty applications. The high-flow configuration is designed for maximum torque and the hydraulic hoses and seals are built to withstand the additional pressure and maintain a leak-free connection.

Additionally, some work tools are designed to accommodate (or compensate for)

machines of a certain size. For instance, a landscape tiller model for machines up to 66 inches wide is offset to cover one set of the machine’s tire tracks.

Multiple Machines Choosing work tools that can be operated by

multiple machines may enhance flexibility and productivity on the jobsite. Two machines with similar hydraulic flow and horsepower, such as a large skid steer loader and a small wheel loader, can usually run most of the same hydromechanical work tools. Generally, a machine with high-flow hydraulics can operate work tools designed for standard-flow machines,butthereversepairing(high-flowtools with a standard-flow machine) is notrecommended. A standard-flow machine’s hydraulic system will be unable to supply the flow needed to properly operate the tool.

HOLT CAT® Power Systems Divisionis helping to build a better community in Corpus Christi by opening a new packaging and fabrication facility that provides better service and added value to customers.

The new structure is an 18,000-square-foot building at the Corpus Christi store location at1319SouthPadreIslandDrive.Itincludespackaging and fabrication bays with two 10-ton overhead cranes plus a parts warehouse that will be used to package generator sets for oil and gas drilling rigs.

A special ceremony in August officially opened the new facility with a ribbon cutting and open house attended by state and local officials, HOLT CAT executives and over 200 employees. A ceremonial ribbon was cut by Peter Holt, Chief Executive Officer, AllynArcher, Chief Operating Officer, Bob Stratton, Vice President and General Manager of thePower Systems Division, State Rep. AbelHerrero and Nueces County Commissioner Oscar Ortiz.

“This new facility provides the PowerSystems Division an opportunity to expand its operations to offer added value to our engine customers,” Bob Stratton says. “In addition to providing a quality Caterpillar® engine, we can package the engine with a generator and controls to make a complete generator set. This saves the customer both time and money and eliminates the need for several vendors to do the packaging.”

The oil and gas industry in Texas has been very strong for the past two years. HOLT

CATPowerSystemsisaprimesupplierof diesel engines for drilling rigs and natural gas engines for gas compressors. Eitherdieselornaturalgasenginescanbe used with generators, depending on customer application.

One of the current projects is the packaging of a backup generator set utilizing a CAT 3612 engine, rated at 3630 horsepower. In the past, HOLT CAT obtained these large units from Caterpillar Inc. already packaged. With the addition of the new facility, PowerSystems will be able to provide the packaging.

“OuroverallPowerSystemsDivisionlong-term expansion plans to meet growing customer needs in our territory include two more new facilities, one in

Longview for engine rebuilds and another in San Antonio,” Bob says.

While under construction, the new Corpus Christi facility employed many local contractors and construction workers. The expansion also helped the Corpus Christi community by adding some 20 new jobs with HOLT CAT for packaging and fabrication technicians.

Kent Brunson is the fabrication manager and Bruce Collier is the packaging manager for the new facility. Charlie Duff is the overall packaging and fabrication manager for HOLT CATPowerSystems.

The Caterpillar Dealer Prep programcurriculum provides eight weeks of intensive TSTC classroom and laboratory training, followed by eight weeks (16-week term) ofemployment as an intern at a HOLT CAT facility. It is essential for the success of the program that the student’s education at TSTC and HOLT CAT be closely aligned for maximum learning and retention.

The internship focuses on completing specific objectives related to the course of study from their previous classroom and laboratory training. The student receives an hourly wage while completing these objectives under the supervision of HOLT CAT employed mentors, who work closely with TSTC instructors to enhance all aspects of the student’s training.

OSHA ExcavationStandards Reviewed

SUMMARY: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has completed a review of its Excavations Standard pursuant to section 610 of the Regulatory Flexibility Act and section 5 of Executive Order 12866 on Regulatory Planning and Review. In 1989, OSHA issued a final, revised Excavations Standard to reduce deaths and injuries from excavation and trenching activities in the construction industry. This regulatory review concludes that the 1989 Excavations Standard has reduced deaths from approximately 90 to 70 per year while real construction activity has increased by 20 percent. The review also concludes that the Standard has not had a negative impact on small business, that the cost of control technology has been reduced, that the Standard is understandable and does not conflict with other rules, and that commenters agree that the Standard should be retained. Based on this review, OSHA concludes that the Excavations Standard should remain in effect, but OSHA will issue some improved guidance and training materials, based on commenters’ suggestions.
