Dear Parents/Guardians: If you have a child who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2014, (as required by Illinois State Law), he or she is eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year. We are pleased to offer ALL-DAY kindergarten for your child. A HALF DAY kindergarten class is also available. The hours for both of the options are as follows:

Ø Half day 9:05 - 11:50 AM or 12:50 - 3:35 PM (your child will be assigned to either AM or PM)Ø All Day 9:05 A.M.-3:35 P.M.

You are being asked to indicate your preliminary choice of all day or half day kindergarten on the attached form. You are invited and encouraged to attend a Kindergarten Parent Preview Night on Monday, March 10th, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the Gym. (A parent self-guided tour will occur from 6:30 pm – 6:55 pm.) At this meeting, we will provide a detailed look at what the kindergarten experience will offer. You will also be provided with more details related to registration requirements and deadlines. This night is designed for parents and guardians only. At the end of the Kindergarten Parent Preview Night meeting, you will be able to fill out a form to inform us if you wish to change your placement choice indicated on this pre-registration form. Parents are encouraged to return registration materials as soon as possible, for planning purposes. The final deadline is May 23, 2014, after which changes in placement cannot be accommodated. Please note that if you select the half day option, your child may not necessarily attend his or her home school. Buses will be provided if your child attends a half day program at another school. Pre-registration and registration materials will be used to anticipate the need for half day kindergarten classes, but final decisions, including location, will not be made until after the registration deadline of May 23, 2014. We need the Pre-Registration information on the attached sheet as soon as possible, but no later than February 14, 2014, so that we can begin planning kindergarten enrollment for the upcoming school year. This Pre-Registration information will be used to form a kindergarten mailing list. Once on the mailing list, additional information will be mailed to eligible kindergarten parents. If you have any neighbors who do not presently have school-aged children, but will have an incoming kindergartner, please give them a copy of this form or ask them to call our office at Young Elementary School, 630-375-3800, so that we may send them this information. I look forward to meeting you at the Kindergarten Parent Preview Night.

Please mark your calendars!Kindergarten Parent Preview Night

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank you to Jennifer Vierling and Hilda Rivera for taking on Bingo Night 2014. Thank you also to our Spirit Council for helping to sell candy/concessions. Thank you also to the volunteers who helped with concessions and prize donations. A great family fun night for all!

The Blood Drive that was held on January 15th, at Nancy Young Elementary, was again a success! Thank you to Jen Weisman for organizing and handling the registration throughout the evening! We would also like to thank Heartland Blood Center for partnering with our school. As stated on their website, “Heartland Blood Centers’ first commitment is always to meet local blood needs.” Hosting a drive with Heartland means that 100% of blood donated is returned to the communities served by Heartland…including DuPage County. Their team was very efficient in handling the steady flow of volunteers. Thank you to the 18 participants that donated that evening. Congratulations to Mrs. Carney’s class for having the most parent participants. They all received an extra recess coupon.

The Bingo Night Committee would like to thank all the families who came out in the cold for a wonderful family night! We hope you all had a wonderful time. A very special THANK YOU to our volunteers who made the evening such a success for all the families: Mr. Hood, Mr. Maldonado, Mr. Pape, Mrs. Lally, Dr. Bell, Mrs. Ranucci, Mrs. Heller, Jay Novotny, the 5th Graders of Spirit Council, Tammi Arostegui, Samantha Arostegui, Anita Balmuri, Camey Brim, Ben Casselman, Kathleen Erdman, Kristen Flanders, Kelly Howard, Ann Marie Larmer, Dawn Malartsik, Maia Prince, Robin Schoolman, Mari Walbridge, and Jen Weisman.

PROGRAM NEWSIt is such a busy time of year for the ELL program at Nancy Young! As you may already have heard, our annual Multicultural Fair is going to take place on Wednesday, February 12th, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm in the evening. We look forward to seeing as many of our families as possible for a night of multicultural music, food, and fun!

This year, as you know, we have made some changes and look forward to seeing many of our students dressed in character to represent a famous figure from his/her country of origin. We are also having our ethnic fashion show and we are very excited to see many families dressed in their ethnic clothing! The entertainment will be provided by a variety of talented outside performers.

As we prepare for the fair, we will also be conducting our annual ACCESS testing. In order for all of our ELL students to perform well on the ACCESS test for ELLs, we want to remind parents that a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast will help your child perform to the best of his/her ability.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you all at the Multicultural Fair and to a fun-filled spring semester!

The works of the following Nancy Young Artists advanced from District 204 to

District 36 for further judging. This is truly a high honor for these Young

Artists.

More information about the author and her other books can be found on her website: www.mariannemalone.com.

ONE BOOK/ONE SCHOOL

This year’s Dolphin Dash will be on Saturday, May 10th. For those of you who haven’t participated in the past, the Dolphin Dash is a fun family event which takes place in the neighborhood surrounding our school and includes a 5K timed run and a one mile run/walk, a pancake breakfast, and a silent auction. We hope you will mark your calendars now and plan on joining us for this great event and fundraiser for the families at NYE!

Donations are needed for the silent auction. Tickets to sporting events, gift certificates to local businesses, or gift certificates to any activities that kids enjoy doing are great donations. If you work at a company that would like to donate an item for the auction, please contact Wendy Balda at [email protected]. The event is also supported by Corporate Sponsorship. For more information, please contact Dawn Malartsik at [email protected] or Jennifer Radina at [email protected].

We are also looking for volunteers for the event. With over 500 participants, it takes a tremendous amount of people to make this event fun, safe, and successful. Please consider helping to plan the event or to volunteer on the day of the event. Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m. at the school.

For more information on this year’s Dolphin Dash, please contact Dawn Malartsik at [email protected] or Wendy Balda at [email protected].

Young Multicultural Fair -- Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Dear Young Families:

In order to celebrate our cultural diversity here at Young Elementary we are anticipating our 6th annual Multicultural Fair with great excitement! It will take place on February 12, 2014 at Young from 6:00-8:30 p.m. This year we are thrilled to bring a new way to celebrate our diversity, with inclusion of the Multicultural Character Wax Museum! Instead of having a cultural show with our student performers, we are asking you to discuss your cultural heritage with your children and find out about one famous person who shares your heritage. Then, your child will be able to dress in character and bring props to be part of our “Multicultural Character Wax Museum!” Each student who chooses to participate will prepare a brief oral presentation of no longer than 30 seconds in length telling about unique and interesting facts about this person. The presentation will be given numerous times as people pass by the student’s area!

Each student will be asked to prepare a tri-fold poster board with information on his/her famous person. The poster should be decorated with pictures, facts and information. The person’s name should be displayed on the board so it is easy to see. Be creative! If your child is interested in being part of our wax museum, please fill out the information below and return it to school by Wednesday, December 18. The first 50 students to register to participate in the wax museum will earn a special prize! If you would like to see what a Living Wax Museum looks like, a video link is provided below for your viewing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYoUbtHPzCg&noredirect=1

The performance portion of our wonderful evening will include performers from outside of Nancy Young only. We will select various performers from the community who represent the many cultures.

There are many ways in which your child or your family can participate in the Multicultural Fair. Please take a look at the ideas listed below and let us know how you, your child, or your family would like to participate. If you wish to contribute an ethnic food, or help out in any other way, please fill out the information sheet below and return it to school. Thank you for your support! We look forward to an exciting event!

DOLPHIN DEPOTThe NYE PTA is again offering a “school store” for our students so that they can purchase inexpensive school supply items every Thursday morning. The Dolphin Depot is set up in the Multi-Purpose Room on Thursday mornings from 8:50am – 9:05am for our Young Dolphins to shop for supplies and other fun items. Prices for most items range from $0.05 to $2.00. We carry useful supplies such as pencils, pens, mechanical pencils and lead refills, highlighters, notebooks, folders, and erasers. We also have an ever-changing assortment of fun products, such as novelty pens, mini erasers, puzzle erasers, sharpeners, markers, colored pencils, pencil toppers, pencil grips, and more. Send your student with some pocket money (that perhaps they have earned!) so they can practice adding amounts, counting change, and being responsible with money. SMALL bills are greatly appreciated and we DO NOT accept checks or credit cards. Please check the schedule below to see which week your student’s grade is invited to shop:

February 6th - K through 2nd

February 13th - 3rd through 5th

February 20th - all gradesFebruary 27th - no store/school closed

Be sure to remind your student to check in with their classroom teacher BEFORE going to the Dolphin Depot to avoid being marked tardy. For questions, please contact Beth Zeitner at [email protected].
