Dear Young Families,

I hope that everyone had a peaceful and restful winter break. We are very excited to be back at school learning. We have quickly jumped into the swing of things and we are eager to see how much more we can accomplish and learn this school year. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students continue to prepare for the Illinois State Assessment Test. This school year, 3rd and 5th grade students will be assessed in the areas of reading and math, while 4th grade students will be assessed in the areas of reading, math, and science. ISAT administration will occur from March 5 through March 9.

Beginning the week of January 9th, all students will participate in curriculum based measurement (cbm) testing in the areas of reading and math. CBMs are one of the ways that we review and monitor our students’ performance and growth. Teachers use this information to plan their instruction for all students. CBM results will be sent home with students in the middle of February. Parents will receive a box and whiskers chart that will indicate their child’s winter CBM performance in relation to students across the district.

We are anxiously awaiting the start of the PTA’s One Book/One School program with all Young students and families reading Frindle by author Andrew Clements. The PTA has worked very hard to develop many exciting activities to go along with the chapters in this book. One Book/One School will run from January 16th through February 20th. As a part of this program, author (Lisa Moser) will visit our school on Wednesday, February 22nd to conduct a writer’s workshop with Young’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.

Kindergarten 2012-2013Beginning January 9, 2012, the office will begin collecting names of incoming kindergarten students for the 2012-2013 school year. If you, a neighbor, or a friend, has a child in the Young attendance area who will be 5 years old, on or before September 1, 2012 (as required by Illinois State Law), please contact the school office at 375-3800.

The 2012 Parent Kindergarten Information Night will be held at Young Elementary School on Thursday, March 1, 2012. This parents’ only evening will begin with a self-guided tour of the building from 6:00 pm – 6:50 pm. Parents will be able to visit a Kindergarten classroom, the Art and Music rooms, PE, the LMC, and the Computer lab. The Parent Program, with an overview of the Kindergarten curriculum and other general Kindergarten information, will begin at 7:00 pm. Before and after the parent presentation, the PTA will be available to answers questions about the Young PTA as well as to sell Young apparel. With our return back to school, I would like to remind everyone of several important items in reference to the winter weather.

• Students go outside for recess everyday unless the temperature is 5°Farenheit or below (this temperature reading includes the wind chill factor.) Please make sure that students are properly attired with a hat, gloves, and appropriate weight coat. Students must have boots and snow pants if they want to play on the field and playground when there is snow on the ground. Children without boots and snow pants must remain on the blacktop when there is snow on the field and the playground.

• During the cold weather months, traffic in the parent pick-up zone increases. Please review the traffic procedures in the Car Pick-up Line and be sure to follow the directions of staff. The parent pick-up/drop-off line is the safest way to drop-off and pick-up students. Please be patient as you navigate through the line.

• Please remember that cars are not allowed in the front circle drive between 8:45-9:05 and 3:15-3:45 due to the loading and unloading of students on busses.

Please note that the first semester ends on January 12th and report cards will go home with students on January 20th. A lot of great things are happening at Young school. Your continued participation and support is greatly appreciated. Please do not hesitate to contact the school via phone or email regarding any comment, question, or concern that you may have. The Young staff want to directly address the needs of all our students and families.

Best Wishes in 2012Ms. Morgan

The NYE PTA is excited to present our second One Book/One School event. This is a program where our entire school community will read the same book simultaneously—parents to children, older children to the family, and school staff to their families. The program is designed to create a school-wide "buzz" about books.

The PTA will be providing every family with the book titled Frindle by Andrew Clements, as well as a bookmark with the reading schedule. On the bookmark, your child(ren) can check off their reading when your family has completed a section. This program will begin on Monday, January 16th and run for 6 weeks, with various activities planned along the way. The premise is that the reading will be done at home as a family to encourage everyone to read. Additionally, podcasts of each chapter, read by different staff members, will be available for listening on the Nancy Young Elementary School website.

Summary of the book: When Nick Allen decides to turn his fifth grade teacher's love of the dictionary around on her, this clever boy invents a new word and begins a chain of events that quickly moves beyond his control.

Reading Schedule: Note: This is just a guide; feel free to take your time or go ahead.Week 1 – Read Chapters 1-4 (pages 1-21)Week 2 - Read Chapters 5-7 (pages 22-41)Week 3 - Read Chapters 8-9 (pages 42-56)Week 4 - Read Chapters 10-11 (pages 57-69)Week 5 - Read Chapters 12-13 (pages 70-87)Week 6 - Read Chapters 14-15 (pages 88-105)Week 7 - Catch up if needed.

Frindle Friday events: During this reading event, we will have “Frindle Fridays,” which will include trivia questions read over the P.A. in the morning, as well as other fun events and prizes.

• Fun in the Sun Day (Friday, January 20) – Nick turned his 3rd grade class into a tropical island. Wear beach attire to school. (ie: Hawaiian shirts, flowers in your hair, leis, etc. please note: Sunglasses are NOT allowed.)

• Wacky Word Day (Friday, January 27) – Nick made up his own new word. Make up your own new word. Write out the definition, pronunciation, and part of speech. Bring this in to school and Publishing Center will put it together into a NYE dictionary. Please don’t forget to put your name, class and grade on it.

• Dictionary Day (Friday, February 3) – The dictionary plays an important part throughout this book. Students will use a dictionary to complete the activity sheet that will be sent home prior to the due date.

• Inspirational Ink Day (Friday, February 10) – Nick was inspired by Mrs. Granger. One week before this Frindle Friday, you will receive a paper pen that says “You Have Inspired Me By…”. Please fill out the sheet and give it to a teacher for Valentine’s Day. (Please don’t forget Specials teachers, aides, and office staff).

• Hooray for Homework (Friday, February 17) – A homework lesson turns fun for Nick. On a sheet of paper write a paragraph about what creative homework you would assign if you were the teacher.

• Future Career Day (Friday, February 24) – In the end, we find Nick working hard towards a college degree, leading to his future career. Wear an outfit to school that represents what you would like to be when you grow up.

This is going to be a great event and we hope your family enjoys reading together!

If you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to contact Carolyn Fichte at [email protected] or 630-978-4106.

YOUNG DAUGHTER’S DANCE

The Annual Service Project collected six boxes of care package materials for Andrew Peters and Alex Hamrick. Thank you to everyone who donated to this successful service event. Two boxes of goodies have been shipped out to our soldiers with the letters the students wrote.

Alex Hamrick paid us a special visit at the Winter Party and celebrated with the kids. We were able to save on shipping costs by sending two boxes home with Alex while he was here. Our soldiers are set to deploy in February and March. At that time, we will be shipping the remaining two boxes to them after they have deployed, so they have something sent from home while they are overseas.

Due to everyone's generosity, the Service Committee's budget was exceeded for shipping costs. A special thank you to Amy Coryell who donated $25 towards additional shipping costs. Also, a big thank you to Kim Kim, Kathy Prince, and Nina Prahbu for all their help sorting through the donations and dividing them for shipping.

If your families would like to continue supporting our soldiers, especially after deployment, please contact Jennifer Vierling at [email protected] for their contact information. An email will go out to collect additional letters before the remaining two boxes ship if your student would like to write additional letters to Alex or Andrew in February and March.

Thank you again for your support of our Annual Service Project.

E-ACTION NEWS!E-ACTION CLUB is collecting unwanted used greeting cards for the St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. We would like to support this worthy cause and help the environment.

We invite all our Young families to help by bringing to school any used, unwanted greeting cards (ie: Christmas, birthday, etc...). Unfortunately they cannot use Hallmark, American Greetings, or Disney cards. The cards can be from any occasion including holiday cards, birthday cards, and even thank you cards.

What is this program? The Recycled Card Program has been in existence for over thirty years now. Through the Kids’ Corp., a program for the children at St. Jude’s Ranch, they learn entrepreneurship skills, as they participate in making new cards by removing the front and attaching a new back. As a result, a new greeting card is made by the children and volunteers. The cards are then packaged and sold. The website is stjudesranch.org.

St. Jude’s helps to rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected children and provides a safe, nurturing, and therapeutic home for them. Let’s help St. Jude and recycle too! Look for the dolphin and the drop off spot in the LMC.

On Wednesday, January 25th, the McDonalds located at 425 North Eola Road in Aurora will be holding a Restaurant Night to benefit Young Elementary. From 4:30pm to 8:00p.m. 10% of all sales will benefit our school.

You will not want to miss seeing some of our own NYE staff helping out behind the counter. Invite your friends and family, because all sales that night are included. No flier is needed to participate. We hope to see you there!

SAFETY TIPS

Indian Prairie School District #204 and First Student offer these winter weather safety

tips:

◦ Motorists should use extra precaution when approaching or following a school bus as they make frequent stops loading and unloading students. Laws in all states require motorists to stop when the school bus stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.

◦ Students who walk to or wait at school bus stops should dress appropriately for cold, icy

weather. Proper outerwear includes warm coats, gloves, hats and waterproof footwear. Passengers should not wear clothes with toggles or dangling key chains as they can get caught in the bus doors or on the handrail.

◦ Passengers should wait for the bus to stop completely before approaching the bus to get

on or before standing up to get off. Always use caution when stepping on or off the bus. ◦ Students should never run after the bus. Plan ahead to allow sufficient time to get to the

bus stop. ◦ Students should stay away from and out of the streets, particularly in snowy, icy weather.

◦ In cases of bad weather or dangerous road conditions, school closings or early dismissals

will be announced in the local media and as a news item on the homepage of this website (and each of our school's websites). If IPSD #204 is closing, information will be available by 6:00 AM. Otherwise, schools will be open for the day. We will post early dismissals as they occur. A recorded message advising of school closings or early dismissal can be heard by dialing the District 204 Information Line at 630-375-3015. Do not call your individual school.

IPPC BYLAWS....NOT OUR NANCY YOUNG PTA BYLAWS

As required by IL PTA Bylaws, IPPC is scheduled to review and update their bylaws in 2011-12. At our most recent IPPC meeting on November 17th, the delegate body voted to approve the proposed changes presented by the bylaws committee. Those proposed changes are as follows: IPPC Proposed Bylaws Changes 2011-12 All proposed changes are in Article VIII Section 1: OFFICERS AND THEIR ELECTION As the bylaws appear currently: ARTICLE VIII - OFFICERS AND THEIR ELECTION Section 1 The officers of this council shall be a president, a first vice president, a second vice president, a secretary, and a treasurer. These officers shall be elected by ballot annually at the regular council meeting in May. However, if there is only one (1) candidate for any office upon adoption of a motion from the floor, the election for that office (or offices) may be by voice. Officers shall assume their official duties at the close of the annual meeting in May, with the exception of the treasurer, who will assume his/her duties after the close of the fiscal year on July 1st. All officers shall serve for a term of (1) one year or until their successors are elected. Recommended changes:1) Substitute the month of April for May.2) Insert sentence “Newly elected officers, currently not holding office, will not have the authority to make decisions as they relate to the current fiscal year but rather will use this time to transition and train in preparation for assuming their official duties.”3) Insert the words “and president” ARTICLE VIII - OFFICERS AND THEIR ELECTION Section 1The officers of this council shall be a president, a first vice president, a second vice president, a secretary, and a treasurer. These officers shall be elected by ballot annually at the regular council meeting in April. However, if there is only one (1) candidate for any office upon adoption of a motion from the floor the election for that office (or offices) may be by voice. Newly elected officers, currently not holding office, will not have the authority to make decisions as they relate to the current fiscal year but rather will use this time to transition and train in preparation for assuming their official duties. Officers shall assume their official duties at the close of the annual meeting in May, with the exception of the treasurer and president, who will assume his/her duties after the close of the fiscal year on July 1st. All officers shall serve for a term of one year or until their successors are elected. Rationale:1) A strong transition is key to the success of all officers. By holding the elections in April, newly elected officers can observe and begin a successful transition process, take any necessary training and be ready to assume their official duties with the knowledge necessary to perform the tasks at hand.2) The current president should remain in authority until the end of the current fiscal year to allow for completion of any business matters as they relate to the current fiscal year.

If you have questions, about these changes, please feel free to contact Kristen Flanders, President, or Carolyn Fichte, IPPC Representative. We will be voting to approve these changes at our next PTA Meeting. A copy of the IPPC Bylaws is available for review in the NYE office. Thank you!

MARKET DAY RECIPE - BEEF STEW

Our budgeted goal this school year for box tops is to make $1,800 and we have $826 in our box top account. We will need approximately 9,740 more box tops labels by the end of February to make our school year goal. Spirit Council has received a lot of box tops and they are trimming and counting

them. We will keep you updated on our progress throughout January and February.

Box Tops for Education has donated approximately $15,300 to our school since 2002. Just think...that is $15,300 less in fundraising programs that NYE PTA had to do to help reach our goals. Please keep clipping those box tops - every single one makes a difference!

You can simply send your box tops to school with your child and their teacher will collect them. Student Council will collect the box tops from the teachers and count them. The class with the largest participation will receive a Dominos pizza party toward the end of the school year.

Should you have any questions, please contact Priti Aggarwal [email protected].

Wow! What a great winter party. Thank you to all the room parents who volunteered their time to help out during the party. The kids had a great time eating pizza and dancing to Kaptain Karaoke.

Thank you to all the families that ordered Market Day cookie dough. We sold a total of 30 boxes which earned our school $72.74. We hope everyone enjoyed their cookies.

Get a Target Redcard and get 5% off your total purchase every time you shop at Target. Also, 1% of the total purchase comes

back to our school. As of August 2011 we have 51 NYE families that use their Target Redcards while they shop at Target and we have $574.39 in the Target NYE school account. This is a great number. Checks will be distributed to NYE school in Aug 2012. Updates will be coming in the monthly newsletter.

You can apply for a Target credit card or a Target Debit card online or at the Customer Service department at the store. Make sure you have Nancy Young as your school of choice to have the 1% applied to. You can also register your current Target card so all donations are applied to our school account. There is also Target forms in the NYE front office.

Apply today and start getting 5% off your total purchase. That could be a saving of almost $40 per month on your weekly grocery bill.

Any questions, please email Erica Patterson [email protected].

Thank you to all of the Greeters who have given their time and efforts to sit at the front door and watch the students go back and forth, to answer the doors, and assist with small tasks from the office. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated by all!!

Thank you to Tracy Bludgen and Karen Welsh who organized the Winter Party. Their time and effort was greatly appreciated!

Thank you to Jennifer Vierling for coordinating the Service Project. Her organization and energy is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Kathy Prince, Nina Prabhu, and Kim Kim for helping to sort and box up the donations.
