Hagley Farm School Department of Education From the Principal’s Desk, Dear Parents and Carers Fantastic results achieved in NAPLAN Congratulations to all staff. Our school is one of several Tasmanian Government schools identified as achieving above average improvements in our 2016 NAPLAN results. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) identified these Tasmanian Government schools as examples of schools that have improved above the national average, making significant gains in reading or numeracy as students progressed from Year 3 to Year 5, or from Year 7 to Year 9. It’s great to receive acknowledgment of this wonderful achievement by our students and staff. We also acknowledge the work of other Tasmanian Government schools that have also achieved improvements as we all seek to have every student reach their absolute best with strong literacy and numeracy skills. ACARA has also released the updated My School website providing educators, parents and the community the opportunity to view updated information on all schools across Australia. You can see the latest updated information about our school for 2016 at www.myschool.edu.au School Association and Parents and Friends AGMs Last Thursday afternoon quite a large group met and a new Parents and Friends Executive were voted in. ATTENDANCE IN TASMANIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

It is important for your child to attend school every day. By law in Tasmania, if your child is five years of age or older

on 1 January, they must attend school.

If your child is absent for a day of school each week during primary school (Prep – Year 6), they will have missed

nearly a year and a half of schooling by the end of their primary school years.

A small number of absences is fine if your child is too sick to go to school or they have an illness that can be

passed on to others.

If your child has to be away from school, it is important to tell the school and provide the reason for your child’s

absence. You can:

· send a note or email to the school

· telephone/sms the school office

· visit the school.

The Principal may ask for a medical certificate to explain an extended absence or illness. After 5 days of unexplained

student absence, you will receive a formal letter from the Department Of Education.

· If your child is having difficulty at school that is affecting their attendance please speak to your child’s teacher or

myself.

NORTHERN MIDLANDS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

What a fantastic day the Hagley team had at the Northern Midlands Athletics Carnival last Wednesday at the

Longford Football Oval. The day began with the 800m events and 6 of our 8 students competing in this event placed

in the top three! We had made a blistering start to the day!

We continued to excel on the running track with 12 of our 16 students competing in 100m heats placing in the first

three and progressing to the finals. We also had 5 of our 8 students competing in the 400 metres place in the first

three.

Out in the field, our 5/6 boys achieved four thirds in Long Jump, Vortex and Shot Put.

Highlights of the day were Katie Spooner and Ava Gardner’s run in the 1500m event and Mikayla Boyack’s run in the

400m. All of these girls were not entered in these events but due to student injuries and illness on the day, they vol-

unteered to run for the other girls and did an outstanding job.

The other highlight was the team spirit we displayed and watching all of our students strive to achieve their personal

bests. We are very proud of the way they participated, encouraged each other and behaved.

A big thank you to Katrina Harris, Caro Verbraeken, Rachel Mitchelson and Susan Bowman for their assistance on

the day.

KINDERGARTEN PHOTOS

In last week’s newsletter, we stated that photos of our Kindergarten classes would appear in last Friday’s Examiner. As

you may have noticed if you bought the paper, this did not happen. Our photos were included in the online version,

but not the printed version. We contacted The Examiner for an explanation, and were told that mistakes had been

made, not only involving our school, but others as well. We are waiting to hear if The Examiner plans to print another

version and will keep you informed. Apologies to those of you who were expecting to find the photos on Friday – we

have attached a copy of them to this week’s newsletter.

SCHOOL SORES

We have had a confirmed case of school sores in one of our Early childhood classes. School sores are a common

infection amongst children. They start as a red patch and develop into crusty yellow sores, often on the face. This is a

highly contagious infection, and children need to stay home until they have received antibiotic treatment for at least

24 hours. When children return to school, any sores on exposed areas must be covered with a dressing. Can you

please reinforce the importance of hand washing to your children to help prevent the spread of this disease.

FISHCARE VISIT

Last Wednesday we had a visit from Fishcare Tasmania. Quentin Higgs, from Fishcare Tasmania and volunteers Tony

and Gary provided our Grade 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 classes with some hands on educational experiences about sustainable

recreational fishing practices. This program links in with our science units around sustainability and water. Our

students are our future fishers and Fishcare encourages our students to think sustainably and responsibly about

recreational fishing and their interaction with the marine environment. Thank you to Mr. Tyson for organising this

opportunity.

COMBINED P&F AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION MEETING AND SCHOOL FORUM

When - Wednesday 5th April, 7.30pm,

Venue - HFS Staff Room

Are you curious about some of the unique features of our school?

Are you interested in taking on a more active role in the school community?

Would you like to hear a summary of Term 1 at Hagley?

This will be the first of the open meetings for the new combined P&F and School Association bodies as we move

towards the requirements of the new Education Act in July.

The School Association are hosting a Forum towards the end of each term during 2017 to provide additional

opportunities for those with an interest in the life of our school to hear it all firsthand rather than just through the

newsletter. These evenings are designed to be less formal than the usual P&F or School Association meetings and are

intended to be a two-way information sharing opportunity.

Come along on the 5th of April to hear an update on Term 1 at Hagley Farm School from Principal Mick Davy

including an overview of the Hagley Visitor Centre and the School Farm progress. Andrew Harris will present an

overview and update on the activities and achievements within the Agricultural Education State-wide Centre

of Excellence which is based at HFS. There will also be an opportunity to participate in small-group discussions

around how the new School Association/P&F model might look in the future and opportunities for involvement. Our

thanks are extended to the outgoing P&F committee for their work in supporting the life of the school during

2015/2016.

All welcome.
