From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents / Caregivers,

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that you all managed a break in

    the holiday period.

Last Tuesday at our Staff Development Day, teachers were looking

closely at a number of programs and initiatives currently run across the school and

where we can add value to impact student’s learning further.

    These included:

Future directions (2016 and beyond) in regard to quality teaching practices

and the notion of increasing student engagement in their school work, effort,

and school life. Student engagement is a very important contributing factor

to the overall connectedness they have to school success.

The Anti-Bullying lessons being delivered in classrooms this term under the

    Bounce Back Program.

Stage Planning time where teachers looked closely at our Literacy and

    Numeracy programs for this term.

Our teachers continue to be highly committed, professional and innovative in their

approach to reviewing ways of making a difference in the schooling of our students!

On ANZAC Day last Monday 26 April, we were very proud of our School Captains Stefan

and Talia who presented speeches at the Merrylands RSL ANZAC Dawn Service. Both

Talia and Stefan spoke brilliantly in front of a crowd of well over 2,000 people.

Congratulations to you both for being such exemplar representations of our school! A

copy of their names on the Service program is on the last page of the newsletter.

Thank you also to Miss Meese and Mrs Cullen for running our ANZAC Day Service at

school on Wednesday. It was very moving and our presenting students did a

magnificent job in sharing the ANZAC story. This year we also had in attendance a live

bugle player who added to the solemn nature of the service.

Well done also to our many competitors who partook in our School Cross Country

event. The effort of everyone was outstanding. Thank you to Mrs Cullen and Mrs

    Spence for their coordination.

Next week, Years 3 and 5 students do their NAPLAN tests. I would like to remind all

parents to make sure that students are on time so they are settled for the start of these

    tests.

Finally, we received great news recently on the safe arrival of twin boys to Mrs Diab

and her husband! We can’t wait for their first visit to school!

    Yours sincerely,

    Mr Loughhead

    P&C News

All parents, carers and community members are invited to join us at our Fete Committee meeting tonight. It will be held in the School Staffroom at 6:30pm. We hope you can come and join us in organising this wonderful fundraising event!

The P&C Mother’s Day Stall will be held again on Friday 6 May, at 9:00am following the Mother’s Day Breakfast. Gifts range from $1 to $10 and there are still many exciting presents to choose from.

The P&C is still looking for a dedicated volun-teer to fill the role of Treasurer in 2016. The Treasurer plays a vital role in ensuring the P&C continues to raise funds for our school facilities. If you are interested in the role, please visit the School Office at anytime.

P&C Meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 18 May and will be held in the School Staffroom. All parents, carers and community members are invited to join us.

    Roy Ringrose has visited

    1/O this week!

Last week the students in 1/O learned about ANZAC

Day and the importance of celebrating this special day each year. They

listened to a story called ‘The Last Anzac’ and thought about the soldiers who

fought in the First World War and about their families.

The students spoke about the significance of the red ‘Poppy’ flower that is

worn on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day each year. They learned that it

    symbolises remembering the fallen soldiers.

The students in 1/O created an artwork showing poppy flowers in a field.

They used crayons and red crepe paper to create their artwork. I think they

did a fantastic job with their poppies!

You can see some of their lovely art displayed in the School Office area, in the

School hall and in their classroom.

Here are some students busy creating their lovely Poppy art:

    Canteen News

If your child is participating in PSSA and wishes to order lunch, PSSA needs to be written on the top of the lunch bag in BIG BOLD LETTERS and placed in the canteen lunch box.

Fruit salads are available for recess and to order for lunch for only $3.50. Margarita pizzas have also been a great success and are available for lunch for $4.00.

Towards the end of term we will be having a donut day.

As we are only in the second week of term, Canteen has been very, very busy from day one. We are in need of helpers, so if you can help out please let me know on 0411 143 609.

If you are ordering your lunch using our school lunch bags or on an envelope please include 10 cents for the bag.

Opportunity Class Placement Applications - Year 5, 2017

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving Year 5 and Year 6 academically gifted students. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 27 July, 2016. The exam is optional, and all students in Year 4 are eligible to apply. Applications are now open and will close on Friday 13 May, 2016. All applications must be submitted online.

Information Booklets can be collected from the School Office, or can be downloaded from our School Website. The Application Link and further information can also be found on the front page of the School Website.

    Bounce Back

During our Staff Development Day this term the staff looked closely at the Department of Communities and Ringrose Public School’s definition of bullying to ensure that they are aligned.

‘Bullying can be defined as intentional, repeated behaviour by an individual or group of individuals that causes distress, hurt or undue pressure. Bullying involves the abuse of power in relationships. Bullying can involve all forms of harassment, humiliation, domination, intimidation and victimisation of others’

We then went on to look at the ‘No Bullying’ unit from the Bounce Back program. This unit looks closely at the definition of bullying and strategies for dealing with if it, as well as the crucial role of bystanders.

Attached to this newsletter you will find a Parent Information handout which looks at the key messages to communicate to your child about bullying and strategies for what you can do to help your child if they are being bullied.

Cross Country 2016 On Thursday 28 April, we held our annual Cross Country Carnival held at the school. It was a beautiful Autumn day to spend the day outdoors. It was very heart warming to see that the students involved in the Cross Country gave 110% effort on the day. Whether they ran the full length or not, they all did the best they could and it was brilliant to be of witness to that. The students also spent the day cheering each other on and showing great sports-manship. At our next assembly on Friday 6 May, we will be presenting the ribbons to our race winners. We would like to extend the invitation to all families to watch this presentation. Each student should be proud of their efforts on this day. - Mrs Cullen and Miss Spence.
