Welcome Back To An Exciting New Semester!

Dear Students,

Welcome back! I hope that each of you had a wonderful exam and had enjoyed the semester break. Time away from daily task can be remarkably rejuvenating. I am confident that you are back with renewed enthusiasm and vigor to explore further on this journey of engineering and above that life building.

Start of a new semester is an ideal time to reflect on where we have been and where we are moving towards. Last semester had been eventful in all spheres. We witnessed and were part of few new systems & facilities being introduction, some existing systems redefined, number of academic and recreational activities and some remarkable achievements at the campus.

Last semester we introduced many new systems/ facilities and we were glad to receive tremendous response and appreciation from your side. One of this being Institute’s scholarship to meritorious students on basis of their semester results. Through this system the Institute will be awarding annual scholarship of about Rs 25,00,000/- to student of our Degree and Diploma Institutes. Energy Efficiency in Indian Cement Industries

An industrial sector plays significant role in country’s energy consumption. National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) which is one of the eight missions released by Prime Minister of India in June 2008, under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). It aims to strengthen the market for energy efficiency by creating conducive regulatory and policy administration. Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) is a component of NMEEE intended to reduce specific energy consumption in energy intensive industries. Under this scheme, reductions in specific energy saving targets are assigned to Designated Consumers (DCs) for a three year cycle. PAT Cycle-I was implemented to eight energy intensive sectors with 478 DCs during 2012-13 to 2014-15. PAT Cycle-II is functional with the addition of three new energy intensive sectors with 621 DCs through 2016-17 to 2018-19. PAT Cycle-III is proposed with an addition of new 116 new DCs during 2017-18 to 2019-20.

Cement is one of the most energy consuming industries. India is the second largest cement market in the world, with 6% of the world’s cement production. Despite its potential for rapid growth, the per capita cement consumption in India accounts for 136 kg, which is much lower than the world average 396 kg. There are about 148 large cement plants in the country with an installed capacity of 219.17 Metric Tonnes per Annum (MTPA) and around 350 small cement plants with an installed capacity of 11.1 MTPA up to year 2009-10. Central Government has notified cement industry as second largest with 111 numbers DCs which is 18% of total DCs identified during PAT Cycle-II.

Specific energy consumption targets are given to DCs at common unit of energy in Tonne of Oil Equivalent (TOE). This is due to the reason that energy consumptions in industries are being measured in Joule, Calorie and Kilowatt-hour and hence it is required to bring all energy consumption at one common platform to achieve net energy saving per unit of production. By convention TOE is the approximate amount of energy that can be extracted from one tonne of crude oil. Cement industry uses electricity and coal as a main source of fuel, where specific energy consumption of electricity is about 80-100 kWh/ Ton of product and specific energy consumption of coal is about 650-750 kCal/Kg. In terms of manufacturing cost breakup, energy cost is around 46% of total. Under PAT Cycle-II, target of 9.3631 TOE/Ton of product for specific energy consumption is given to cement sector, which is 5.5% higher than PAT Cycle-I. Hence it is mandatory for DCs of cement sector to carry out rigorous energy audit to identify various energy saving opportunities.

DIET e-Newsletter, June 2017

Energy Management Cell (EMC) of Electrical Engineering Department at institute is authorized Accredited Energy Auditors (AEA-0252). EMC team has carried out detailed energy audit of one of DCs during June 2017. Team has identified energy saving potential in compressors, fans, blowers, pumps, and cooling tower used in cement grinding process. Together with this health check of equipment, harmonic analysis of electrical system, motor survey, air condition survey, illumination survey was also carried out explore energy conservation potential in the plant. Team has identified energy saving potential of around 15, 00,000 kWh/Annum. With a unit cost of 4.5 Rs/kWh, it has energy saving potential of around Rs. 70 Lakh/Annum.

KAIZEN - "CHANGE FOR THE BETTER"

What is KAIZEN? Kaizen is a strategy where employees at all levels of an institute or a company work together proactively to achieve regular, incremental improvements to the process. In a sense, it combines the collective talents within an organization to create a powerful engine for improvement. Kaizen was originally introduced by Masaaki Imai in his book Kaizen: The Key to Japan’s Competitive Success in 1986. Kaizen is recognized as an important pillar of an organization, institute or individual for long-term continuous improvement. This is based on certain guiding principles listed as follows.

• Good processes bring good results • Go see for yourself to grasp the current situation • Speak with data, manage by facts • Take action to contain and correct root causes of problems • Work as a team • Kaizen is everybody’s business

KAIZEN PHILOSOPHY Kaizen is a daily process which when done correctly,

• It develops a culture where all employee are actively engage in improvement • It teaches employees to think differently about their work. • humanizes the workplace • Eliminates overly hard work, and teaches scientific ways to work eliminating waste in

daily activities.

KAIZEN ACTION PLAN

DIET e-Newsletter, June 2017

• Plan: Review the current state, Develop a plan for improvements and based on that set Goals.

• Do: Run Experiment or Implement improvements.

Dare To Dream

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet success in unexpected hours.” Computer Engineering was the most natural course of action for me. The thought of college life being 'easy going' was washed off due to my surgical sufferings. Those four years taught me being skillful at the need of the hour but I owe it all to the efforts the teachers put in. Their preaching and teachings not just helped during my B.E., but also today! Me and my not so strict uncle had an unsaid agreement to act complete strangers in the college vicinity but the common surname had a lot of room for rumours. I always wanted to stand up to his expectations, I had to match up to him to make myself worth a calling. The fear of being of caught and knocked down, didn’t let me bunk classes ever, but I did encourage lending out money to friends! A little known secret, I used to break open the window and sneak onto the terrace to read during the reading vacations. From being an introvert ‘book-worm’, I came a long way to be the one dreaming huge and satisfied for no less. The designer in me grabbed the opportunity to pursue masters in design at DA-IICT, Gandhinagar. It was like a dream come true. I lived a real college life (if you know what I mean). The proudest moment was to receive the Gold medal and seeing my parents faces sitting in the crowd, clapping hard. I started my first job as a Graphic Designer in the city of beaches, Goa. You tend to forget

about the beaches and beers after pulling out 13hr work shifts every other day. Meagre salary and a house to manage single-handedly was enough motivation to come back but I had a lot to learn! I was an empty hard-disk waiting to be filled. I hanged around at the design studio for a couple of years dealing with whatever came my way- UI/UX for web and mobile, motion design, branding, management etc. Beard Design moulded me for life! I am thankful to my family and friends who with just one line at every hindrance boosted in me a leap of hope: “Everything will be good at the end, if it’s not, it’s not the end yet.” Those endless memories of joy I had managing the ‘fun-zone’ at the college tech-fest or the racket we created in the bus. The thrill I still get, the struggle phase during exams and submissions that I thought was huge, but is now nothing journeying through 6 years of education, and 2 years since I stepped into the industrial world. I am thankful to all my teachers, who just did not teach me the core, but the real life glimpses too. In the end, I am happy in what I have achieved and there is a lot to accomplish. Dear juniors, college will not just take you through a whole of what you feel is done with it things, but also widen your comfort zone taking you out of it. Teaching you the essentials. Don’t criticize, just go with the flow, and time will show up it’s magic.
