Issue No 19 17 June 2015

From the Principal PRAYER: 1Corinthians 12: 4-6

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are

different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the

same God at work.

Let us pray: God of all, we thank you for the power of your presence and for this opportunity

to come together to celebrate our common work for our community. We give

thanks for the many gifts represented among us and for the many diverse gifts

that contribute towards the building of the kingdom of God.

Pour out your spirit upon us. Confirm and strengthen our vision. Be the hope that

sustains and strengthens us. For all these things we pray.

This year’s Drama production I’m With Cupid! was an outstanding and hilarious adaptation of

Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Mr Joshua Combes wrote and directed this production

which included students from Mercy College, as well as students and staff from St Pius X College.

Each performance was received with great delight from audiences, over three consecutive

evenings. The entire Performing Arts Department was involved, as well as many staff from other

faculties.

Special note of appreciation to Ms Sarah Sumner, Mr

Mark Anderson, Mrs Natalie Rawle, Mrs Pip Waters, Mr

Peter Clark, Ms Donna Janes, Mrs Meredith Leedham

and Ms Tracey Bates (Producer).

The College Performing Arts Parents Association (PAPA)

also assisted, serving refreshments during intermission. The

Performing Arts at the College grows from strength to

strength and we are fortunate to have such dedicated

PRINCIPAL’S PROFESSIONAL LEAVE 6 July – 21 August

The focus of this Professional Leave is improving the educational outcomes for students with a particular focus on

enhancing teaching and learning and building a learning culture in schools.

This is consistent with the recommendations in my Review at the end of 2014 which stated:

“It is recommended that John seriously consider taking some professional development/renewal leave in the near future

to energise his vision of St Pius X College as a contemporary learning community of excellence for boys’ education.”

To this end, I am firstly staying with the Christian Brothers in Geneva as part of Edmund Rice International and visiting the

United Nations for a week. The second leg is to attend the 19th European Conference on Literacy held at the University of

Klagenfurt in Austria. The last leg is to attend the International Principals’ Conference in Helsinki. The focus is on leading

learning.

I am appreciative and grateful to EREA and the College Board for their support of this leave.

Mr Jim Olson will be the Acting Principal, Mr Mark Casey will be the Acting Deputy Principal and Mr Steve Hopley will be

the Acting AP Mission and Identity during my period of leave.

STAFF CHANGES TERM 3

As outlined in previous Principal’s Board reports, following the resignation of Mr Shane Byrne (Computing Studies teacher

taking appointment in Shanghai) and Ms Sharon Blanchard (Learning Support Coordinator resigned for health reasons),

we have appointed a Learning Support Coordinator – Ms Joanne Raheb-Mol from ACARA, and a Computing Studies

teacher – Mr Joseph Lai, from Freeman Catholic College, Bonnyrigg.

SENIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - TREACY WINS IN THE WET!

Mr John Couani

From the Assistant Principal – Teaching and Learning YEARS 5 TO 10 REPORTS will be available on the Parent Portal on Friday afternoon and will be sent in the mail early next

week.

Mr A Damo

From the Business Manager SAFETY & WELL BEING

In the interests of further strengthening risk management at the College we will, during the upcoming term break, be

undertaking two projects to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of students, staff and all visitors to the Chatswood

campus.

Trees – Certain trees in the College’s Anderson Street frontage, as well as the Sarto Centre, will be removed during the term

break. Others will be pruned. These works are being carried out with the approval of the Council and performed by a

qualified arborist, as part of an active and ongoing management plan for the trees at Chatswood and Oxford Falls. We

look forward to unveiling a new landscaped garden in the Anderson Street frontage later in the year.

CCTV –Also during the break we will be establishing a CCTV system to monitor the perimeter of the College. Whilst the system

is not being established in response to any particular incident, we see it as a cost effective and proportional response to

minimising some of the College campus security risks. The system will not provide coverage in any corridors, classrooms or

other enclosed spaces. The focus of the system will be to monitor 24/7 the entry and exits from the Chatswood campus and

in so doing, address matters of theft, vandalism and personal safety for all in our community.

Mr A Ballesty

From the Assistant Principal – Mission and Identity This week, the 14th to 20th June, is Refugee Week. Over this week we are asked to remember the plight of these people as

they struggle to re-establish themselves in foreign countries. The difficulties that refugees are confronted with around the

world certainly make us appreciate how fortunate we are in our land. The theme for Refugee Week comes from our National

Anthem, “With courage let us all combine”. May we keep them in our prayers:

A Prayer for Refugees

Almighty and merciful God, whose Son became a refugee

and had no place to call his own;

look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger,

homeless and hungry.

Bless those who work to bring them relief; inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts; and guide

the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our last visit for the Term to Willowood Nursing Home saw an enthusiastic group of our Year 11 students - Dominic Gordon,

Daniel Byrne, Josiah Lising, Aiden Mann, Luca Blasonato, Zac Ritchie, Matthias Anstice, Ash Seeto, Daniel Yazdi, Andrew

Xeni, Johann de Silva, Harry Heaney, Ned McDermott Healey, Finn Hutchinson, Declan Warn, Keenan Smith and John

Davie - accompanied by Ms Maxine Hunt and Ms Meredith Leedham, provide a mix of entertainment and good banter

with the residents. It is a very special to see our young men relate so well with the residents of Willowood. We look forward

to our next visits in Term 3 as well as the continual service at the Matthew Talbot Hostel on Wednesday evenings.

Mr M Casey

From the Social Justice Coordinator Social Justice is about people who suffer injustice and disadvantage and we help to alleviate their

suffering through our commitment to be in relationships with them.

In 1802 Blessed Edmund Rice established his first school to teach poor boys of Waterford, Ireland. Their

poverty and that of their families was intense. He saw that education would empower these boys to

change their circumstances while respecting the dignity given to them by God. The result was to

make an enormous change in the society of Waterford and, through the Christian Brothers, Ireland

and other parts of the world Blessed Edmund recognised a need and, with God's grace, acted upon

it.

We, as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, are also called to action. In the spirit of Edmund Rice we are called

to give generously to those around us who are in need. This is a fundamental characteristic of being Christian. The Edmund

Rice Society (ERS) has been gathering in numbers and discussing social issues. Students of all years are encouraged to come

and get involved in Social Justice issues. Weekly ERS meetings are held on Thursday lunchtime in LC2 in Week 1, and

Wednesday lunchtime in LC2 in Week 2.

On Wednesday Max Magee, Varto Zaitounian and Ruben Ghannoum, along with Mr Casey and Mr Blake, went to Matthew

Talbot Mens Hostel to serve their evening meal. A rewarding and enjoyable afternoon was had by all in serving dinner to

approximately 50 men, followed by the return trip in one of the College buses. Mr D Blake

From the Head of Student Services POSITIVE SCHOOL’S CONFERENCE

Congratulations to the following students: Liam Carroll, Tyler Jarvis and Hayden Tutill from Year 12 and Mitchell Tutill, Stewart

Ross and Jordan Smith from Year 11, who represented the College by presenting our MindMatters program to The Positive

Schools Conference last Thursday at the SMC Conference Centre, Sydney. The Conference was attended by Mr Stollery

and Mr Ticli and also featured presentations by Dr Michael Carr-Greg, Dr Toni Noble and Tony Jones, among a host of Health

and Wellbeing advocates from Australia and abroad.

ROTARY RUPEN YOUTH LEADERS FORUM

In a busy week for our Stage 5 and 6 students, Year 10 student Daniel Butler represented the College at The Rotary RUPEN

Youth Leaders forum at Springwood in the Blue Mountains last Friday to Sunday. By all accounts Daniel was both inspired

and contributed positively to the event. He continues a community partnership with Rotary which has featured many of

our students attending not only RUPEN but also National and International Youth Science Forums in recent years. Well

done Daniel.

Performing Arts News I’M WITH CUPID!

Last week saw the culmination of many months of hard work with “I’m With Cupid!” being staged in the Sarto Centre to full

houses over three successive evenings. There were numerous memorable moments and many outstanding performances

from a cast which consisted of students from St Pius College and Mercy College, as well as staff from St Pius.

Congratulations to Mr Joshua Combes who wrote and directed the production, as well Ms Natalie Rawle who was the

Musical Director. Particular thanks to Ms Sarah Sumner (Assistant Director) and Mr Mark Anderson, who also generously gave

of their time to be part of the cast. A selection of photos from the production can be found in Woodchatta Extras.

STUDIO CONCERT

Thank you to Mr Chris Richardson and his Voice students for providing a delightful afternoon of beautiful singing on Monday.

FAREWELL MR CLARK

It is with sadness that the Performing Arts Department farewells Mr Peter Clark at the end of this term. In his time at the

College, Mr Clark has taught guitar and bass guitar and more recently, he has tutored students in all aspects of Music

Production and Digital Music. In his role as College Audio Technician, Mr Clark has been vital in ensuring that all audio

requirements at both the Chatswood and Oxford Falls campuses have been ready to cater for a variety of events, from

Twilight Concerts to Reflection Days. We wish Peter, Lou, Genevieve, Mabel and Euan well in their move to Adelaide.

DISCONTINUATION OF LESSONS

Parents are reminded that three weeks TERM NOTICE must be given if a student is ceasing instrumental lessons.

Consequently, if your son decides during the holidays that he no longer wishes to undertake voice, instrumental or theory

tuition then an invoice will be sent for lessons in the first three weeks of Term 3.

HOLIDAY PRACTICE

Students are reminded to take their instruments home during the holidays so that practice can continue. As these holidays

are somewhat longer, it is also a good time to take care of any repairs that need attending to.

MEET THE MUSIC

Students of Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 Elective Music will be attending the third concert in this series on Wednesday 22nd July

(Week 2 next term), 6.30pm at the Opera House. There are extra tickets available for the concert at a price of $26.00. If

interested, please contact [email protected]

Debating & Public Speaking At last Friday’s assembly the two Year 11 teams were presented to the school

assembly by Matthew Harris, the 2015 Debating Captain. Both teams had lost

just one of their debates in the 2015 season and were participating in the CSDA

Elimination Round that night at Domremy College, Five Dock.

The 11a team - Ryan Atttard, Josiah Lising and Keenan Smith - debated St

Scholasticas College, Glebe Point and the 11b team - Billy Moran, Zac Triantafilis

and Patrick McKenzie - debated Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich. On the night

the 11a’s were successful against St Scholasticas but the 11b’s were not able to

gain a win against Marist Sisters’ Woolwich.

Both teams had a panel of three adjudicators: one senior adjudicator (the Chair) and two less experienced

adjudicators. The 11b’s can be comforted that their panel was split with the Chair of their panel choosing St

Pius; this means that the debate was very, very close. The 11b’s need to hold their heads high knowing that

they produced an amazing debate last Friday. The Year 11’s deserve to be congratulated for having achieved

so much in a very rigorous and challenging competition.

This week the Yr 11a’s will travel to Marist College North Sydney to compete

against Santa Sabina College.

The Year 12b team have gone one step further than the Year 11’s five wins from

six rounds and have remained undefeated throughout this season. This is an

exceptional achievement and we need to congratulate these spectacular

debaters: Lyndon Maher, Adam Melzer and Harry Vinter. To remain

undefeated throughout the season is a testament to their ability to plan

effectively, to think on their feet and to work as a team. Lyndon, Adam and Harry have moved straight to the

Quarterfinals to be held this Friday 19th June at Marist College North Sydney to compete against Fairfield. Our

thoughts and best wishes are with both senior teams competing this Friday night.

As a summing up for the 2015 season it is vital that the whole school

acknowledged the efforts of the 12a debating team. These boys lost Jakob

McDermott at the beginning of 2015 when he moved to another school. This

was so sad as Jake, Matthew and Hans were an extremely entertaining and

successful debating team. This year Tyler Jarvis put his hand up to join Matthew

and Hans, and even though Tyler has never debated, this group of three gained

4 wins from 6 rounds….an amazing achievement! We can certainly be

extremely proud of all of our debaters and especially our Seniors who have

achieved so much in this 2015 CSDA season.

Ms M Waterson

Chess The last round of chess was played on Friday 12th June. There is NO chess this week. Should any team be successful in

qualifying for the semi-final rounds they will be notified early next term. It would be advisable to access the NSWJCL website

during the holidays, after last round results have been updated.

Junior School News DANCE FINALE and ACADEMIC AWARDS

The culmination of our dance program is tomorrow at Oxford Falls. The presentations begin at 12.40 pm in the

Christian Brothers’ Gym. At the conclusion of the dance finale we will present the Term 1 Academic Awards -

the ‘Fides.’ The nickname comes from our School Motto: ‘Fide et labore.’ The ceremony will be followed by

afternoon tea in the Curtin room. As we have just completed our reports and finalised our academic awards,

we will present the boys in front of an audience tomorrow. This will occur at the conclusion of the dance finale.

(Approx 1.15 to 1.30pm start.) Emails have been sent to inform you if your son is receiving an Academic award.

REPORTS AND INTERVIEWS

Your son’s report will be mailed to you by the conclusion of this term. Interviews will be held from 8 am to 6 pm

on Monday 13 July, prior to the start of Term 3 on Tuesday 14 July. The booking portal is open and I have asked

parents to book their son’s classroom teacher, and wait until the holidays before you book specialist teachers

such as your son’s Mathematics and Literacy teachers. The exceptions to this request are Mrs Spanyik, Mrs

Withford and myself who don’t have a home room. The interviews will be held in the teacher’s classrooms, with

Mrs Spanyik in the Learning Enrichment room at the end of the Junior School corridor, opposite 5 Red. I will be

in my office and Mrs Withford will be in the library. The senior school interviews are in the College gymnasium.

Saturday 27th June & Saturday 4th July

9am Oxford Falls for Gold Coast touring squad.

FOOTBALL Dear Parents and Players, last weekend was a very successful weekend for St Pius Football, playing away to St Pat’s. We

had more wins than losses, certainly a rare occurrence. Player of the week goes to James Habib of the 16As for his constant

effort, highlighted by his efforts as a striker, to run back in defence of a crucial corner, clear the ball to the other end of the

field and then set chase and beat all other players there. In the same line of thinking, the team of the week goes to the

mighty 13Ds. The results don’t always go their way; however their dedication and commitment to the team, week in week

out, is unquestionable. Well done to all.

Our season now has a break until the 18th of July. Training will commence first week back for all teams. As we go on the

break, we wish the 1st XI success in the quarter finals of the NSWCIS cup this afternoon and we also wish them luck in

defending their QLD title in the last week of the holidays.

RUGBY

ST PIUS X SENIOR RUGBY DRAW – SATURDAY 18TH JULY

Rugby will recommence the first weekend after the school holidays with all teams playing at Oxford Falls on Saturday 18th

of July. St Pius X will host several schools on the day and welcome Kinross, The Scots School and Waverley. All St Pius X sides

will play on either Chaplin 1 or 2, with the only exception being the 15As and Bs who will play on Watkins Oval.

*St Pius not involved in 3rd XV fixture.

I ask parents to begin thinking about the upcoming away trip to St Stanislaus in Bathurst on Saturday 25th of July. Students

will be asked add their names to the sign-up sheet during Week 1 of Term 3 if they wish to travel by bus. The bus will depart

Chatswood early morning and return from Bathurst at the conclusion of the 1st XV match. Numbers will be finalised on Friday

17th of July.

I would like to wish all players a happy and safe holiday. With a long break between matches please try to get together

and do some of your own training. It is important that the skills and fitness you have been working so hard on during the

season are not lost during this time off.

Finally, best of luck to our Queensland tourists who will represent the college in the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival during the

break.

Please see the Rugby Club News section in Woodchatta Extras for further important SPX Rugby information, including the U13 Rugby Report.

showing not only a high level of playing ability but a style that is exciting to watch and converts into points on the scoreboard

- the13As winning by over 40 and the Ds by over 50. When you add heaps of enthusiasm, you are definitely on a winner!

The Bs winning 24 – 17 and the Cs 17-12.

The16As continued on their winning way in a game limited in time due to an injury to a St Pats player. Tries by Bento, Easy

and Roberts ensured a comfortable win. It is also worth mentioning that you have to remain focused and flexible in

movement when there is a long delay for injury.

Elsewhere games we lost by less than a score could be put down to poor starts. Although we fought back well it serves as

a reminder that Away fixtures maybe need a little more preparation than Home fixtures.

Special mention to some of our 14A players who played a half with the 14Bs to ensure they had a game, but it took a little

bit out of them when they played for the As, losing by 2! Rayner and Hall going well.

The 16Bs also fell just short despite tries by Ellis, Greenland and Shipley. This is a very competitive squad with a really positive

attitude. The 15As and Bs both had periods of ascendancy close to the opposition line but failed to convert, with Harry

Marchant scoring one of his “trademark” electric tries down the touchline!

Seconds lost on the bell to an offside penalty and with a penalty count of 13 – 1 against have given some food for thought.

Cane Eden made his starting debut for the firsts and it couldn’t have gone much better as he scored in the opening minutes.

Ned McDermott Healey’s try further emphasised our attacking potential but missed tackles, especially lower body ones,

proved costly as the game ‘ran’ away from them. The Firsts’ squad now has three weeks to prepare for the annual trip to

the Gold Coast Rugby Tournament at Runaway Bay. We wish them well in what is always a competitive and enjoyable

competition.

For everyone else, enjoy the break and find time to maintain your fitness as we have three tough games remaining when

you return.

It was a crisp morning for the finals and playoffs of the term. I was St Pius X teams 1-3 playing Knox teams

1-3. It was a tight competition between the teams with many long rallies and strategic moves in both the

doubles and singles matches. St Pius X Team 2 won the final by one set with a victory in tie break of 11/9.

St Pius x Team 3 went down to Knox in the singles matches. St Pius X Team 1 came runners up and

displayed excellent sportsman ship with some intense rallies.

Well done to all the boys on the commitment to the season and playing with their team mates. We look

forward to the next competition in Term 3.

ST PIUS X COLLEGE U13 2015 Rugby Report Vs St Pat’s Strathfield

SPX: A 46-10, B 24-19, C 17-5, D 50+-0.

COMMENTARY: Great way to round off this term’s Rugby with 4 wins at

the opponent’s home pitch. Mr Russo and I searched our collective

memories and cannot remember that achievement previously.

Ds played great Rugby with fwds going into contact and providing quick

ball for Gilbert and Ethan to get to our strong running backs- where Julien

H, Tom S and Dan H made inroads. Tom L, Will G, Alec P, Bailey S and

Harrison C were all prominent in the ½ I witnessed.

Under 13’s Rugby Captains

C’s stayed solid in a spoiling and sometimes spiteful affair and kept playing cohesive Rugby. Ryan M was a forceful

presence again and Alec P and Kiefer OB provided thrust. Jack H body height and driving D was a pleasure to

behold. Gil D replaced fine ½ Jackson C and we didn’t miss a beat but MOM was fly-half Ryan P- try scoring,

running purposefully and sound D in a true “captain’s knock” Mr Cogan was very satisfied on the wholehearted

performance.

The B’s made it a thriller 12-12 at ½ time and down 12-19 with 10 to play and dealing really well with a feisty SPC

and a frustrating ref. Jack T was on anything loose, Tom E’s & Lozza’s great D got turnover ball and Liam and LG

made great use of it. Carl F, Kiefer OB, Pat J and Alec P (3rd game)for the day knuckled down and we got over

with seconds to spare. True Grit!

A’s started uncertainly but got to 17-5 at the break. A superb ball running, ever supporting second session saw as

us AS A TEAM and SQUAD cruise away against fair opposition. There were a host of fine performances Connor M’s

D, Brynn’s power running, Ben M’s popup and Gregor’s speed on the outside all worthy of mention.

Positives:

Great squad passion and consistency shown

Support play

Fwds using channels 1 & 2 TO GO forward

To Improve:

Loose carries into contact

Kick off receptions.

Straighter running.
