A Rite of Passage

Year 11 Development Camp

At our Year 11 Assembly recently, students heard about theEmu Gully Developmental Camp. This is an annual end of yearevent for all Year 11s. It has become part of the “Forest LakeHigh School experience”. We shared a few photos of previouscamps. Judging by the reactions this created a lot of interest. You can see some of those photos – “the wall, the crossing andthe pit” – and if you would like to know more, you could visit theEmu Gully website at:

https://emugully.com.au/

The WallThe Wall

The CrossingThe Crossing

The PitThe Pit

On Friday, all those who were present, received an Expressionof Interest (EOI) letter. This letter outlines timelines for thoseintending in going. Because of its popularity, places are limited. If you are interested in your child attending, please complete theEOI and return it to me after paying the $50 deposit at thePayment Window, before Friday, 14 June. Once we get anindication of numbers, we will work with Emu Gully to developa suitable programme.

If you need another copy of the EOI letter, please contact meat [email protected]. Students who have attended in the pasthave found this camp to be a wonderful part of their sharedformative schooling experiences that they will be able to talkabout in years to come.

Student Tips

Goal Setting - SMART

Again in Term 2, students are being coached to create/writegoals with their teachers in each class. These goals will bewritten in their student planners, it would be wonderful to askyour child to share their academic goals with you as they aredeveloped over the coming week/s. Students will again beusing the SMART strategy, explained in the student diary.

S: What is specific about the goal?M: Is the goal measurable? How will it be determinedthat the goal has been achieved?A: Is the goal achievable?R: Is the goal realistic to performance expectations orprofessional development?T: Is the goal time-bound? When will this goal beaccomplished?

What role can you play as a parent?

Provide feedback, support and celebrate success. Part of thefun and motivation of setting goals is working on them in asupportive group environment. Even though goals are often

• current performance;

• QCE performance;

• ATAR performance (if applicable) and;

• most suitable course of study (subjects).

3

Page 4: From the Principal - forestlakeshs.eq.edu.au · May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. Thismonthduringrollclassteachersare talkingtostudentsaboutthisveryimportant social

individual in nature, children should be able to recognise howtheir goal is tied to their family values, the aspirations of a sportsteam, or the aim of a specific curriculum. When they understandthis connection, they feel more open to seeking feedback andreceiving support from adults. When goals are achieved, it’stime to celebrate with others!

Student Disengagement

Does your student appear to be disengaging with school?Has low motivation to participate in school? Is it a struggle to get them to attend each day?If you answered yes to any of the questions above pleasecontact me via email ([email protected]) so we can arrangeto meet and work together to see how we can re-engage yourstudent and set them up for success.

Real World Knowledge and Skills. This month the Design Technologies Department collaboratedwith Worldskills Queensland to give our students theopportunity to “Try A Trade”. This excursion was held at anew building site in Pallara and supported by thirty-five FLSHSstudents working with Stocklands, Metricon and ConstructionSkills Queensland. Students gained real world skills andknowledge as they experienced a number of different trades onthe day. Students were also given a tour of the developmentsite and display homes.

Year 10 Design – Real World Project

Our school would like to redesign the senior courtyard to havemore useable space that is safe, practical and durable forsenior students. The following points explain the limitations andrequirements of the task:-

Each team needs to consider:

So far, students have been busy measuring the space andsourcing inspiration from their research into other schoolspaces and google images. They are currently working on theirmood boards and they have started sketching the area whichwill be transferred into Revit an AutoCad software. The studentsare quite excited by this project and they are looking forwardto seeing it through from this design phase to the constructionphase with the winning design being chosen by the schoolexecutive team.

Year 9 Design – Real World Project

Our Year 9 Design students have been tasked with designingand creating a unique key holder to aid in starting a caroperated by our special guest - Ben Harvey. They will alsodesign a ramp to allow Ben access to the passenger seat of his4X4.

• Please note there will be no Year 10 classes on thisday to allow for interviews to take place.

• Parents are required to be in attendance.

• Students are to lead this discussion.

• Parent and Student attendance isexpected on this night to ensure you are fullyinformed of the New QCE system and our freshcurriculum offerings.

• There will be limited funding available for theconstruction.

• The design/structure needs to be durable towithstand teenage use and the harsh weatherelements of our climate (e.g. heat/sun).

• Mr Terry’s construction class will build the successfuldesign.

• Sustainability needs to be a priority when makingdesign decisions.

• The way in which students interact with the space, equipment and existing structures in the seniorcourtyard.

• The materials that are locally available or that can bereused or recycled (6 R’s of Sustainability).

• How to make it simple to construct in a 10 week timeframe.

• What existing structures, vegetation and equipment(e.g. fire hydrant) are already in the space.

4

Page 5: From the Principal - forestlakeshs.eq.edu.au · May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. Thismonthduringrollclassteachersare talkingtostudentsaboutthisveryimportant social

Students will use the 3D CAD Inventor program to design thekey holder and the ramp and use either a 3D printer or a Laserprinter to create the key holder.

Design Problem: You and two friends would like to start a smalldisability equipment and services business. Your first clientwould like a key device that goes on top of his current keysto enable him to start his car easily, and a ramp to store hiswheel chair in the back of his car. You will need to designa range of different ergonomic devices to assist him drivingindependently. Before the best key device designs are pickedfor manufacturing, your designs will need to be prototyped.

Mr Lindh, HOD – Design Technology

Early Childhood StudiesLast term the Year 10 Introduction to EarlyChildhood Studies and Year 11 EarlyChildhood Studies students received a visitfrom fourth Year Speech Pathologystudent, Hannah. Hannah introduced students to the role ofspeech pathologists and spoke to the class about speech andlanguage development in children from birth to five years. Sheexplained to students what was classed as ‘normal’ languagedevelopment in children. Students also learned some of the ‘redflags’ for language development, that is, speech and languageissues that might indicate a speech disorder. The highlight ofthe lesson for some students was watching a video thatshowed an x-ray of someone swallowing! Many thanks toHannah for giving of her valuable time to teach our studentsabout the importance of speech and language development inyoung children.

Wine Anyone?Chemistry students in Year 12 have begun investigating theancient art of fermentation, specifically wine making. They haveselected fruits and prepared musts that ferment into wine.During this process, students will learn titration techniques, maintaining pH balance of an aqueous solution, testing anddetermining sugar and alcohol content.

Despite the smell of fermenting fruit filling the science lab, theenterprising students have been checking their wine and itsprogress regularly. This will culminate in them bottling theirwine and perhaps entering the RNA Winemaking contest at theEKKA.

Students are very excited to get out into the community todevelop their personal interests and practical skills, improvetheir fitness and provide service to our community

City Hall VisitLast week a number of senior students took the scenic route tothe City on the 100 bus. After a great lunch at the Myer Centrefood court, students visited the Fresh Futures Post SchoolOptions Expo, currently on display at City Hall. They spoke tomany different service providers and collected a lot of pens, water bottles, and other freebies.

A few words from some of the students...

Our favourite part was chilling on the bus, hanging out withfriends; the food; seeing Brisbane City Hall in person and thedog with a missing leg, it was very cute!

We learned that if there are too many people on an escalator itbreaks down; how the city works; that there was a City Hall andwho to talk to after school if I need help.

We’ve been Slimed!By arranging pieces of oatmeal on a Petridish to represent railway stations, studentsat FLSHS are growing a slime mould modelof the Brisbane rail and road system in anattempt to map the optimum transport network.

For years now, researchers in the field of urban transport havelooked at biomimicry as a tool for establishing the most efficientroutes around congested cities, typically by road or rail.

The use of naturally occurring living organisms to solve spatialdesign problems has, in this area, been explored by mimickingthe foraging process of ants or the growth of crystal structures. But it is a particular form of slime mould, Physarumpolycephalum (the "many-headed slime"), that has shownparticular promise, having been applied to cities around theworld and now offering the potential for mimicking regularlyoccurring events, such as rush hours.

P polycephalum is a plasmodial, single-celled organism whichgrows outward from a single point, searching for food sources.Once these have been located, the many branches it has sentout die back, leaving only the most efficient route between foodsource nodes.

HALT!

HALT – helping to keep your emotions in check!

Life is busy, complicated and confusing - sometimes managingemotions can seem harder to do than usual. Luckily there aresome simple tricks to help when your emotions are takingcontrol of you.

Is your Student Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired?

HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired – feelings thatcan hijack your emotions and disrupt your logical thoughts, reasoning and problem-solving skills. When your emotions startcalling the shots, ask yourself a key question: am I hungry, angry, lonely or tired? If the answer is yes to any of thesefeelings, take action.

Hungry – hunger can have a huge impact onour emotions. Regular balanced meals keepblood sugar levels in check and managesmood swings and irritability. Three balancedmeals a day, including a good-qualitybreakfast within 2 hours of waking up, is the goal.

7

Page 8: From the Principal - forestlakeshs.eq.edu.au · May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. Thismonthduringrollclassteachersare talkingtostudentsaboutthisveryimportant social

Angry – take time to reflect on what madeyou angry in the first place. What positivesteps can you take to improve the situation?Make a plan and put it into action. Get help ifyou need it. Find something enjoyable to doin the meantime so you don’t dwell on

negative thoughts.

Lonely – feelings of loneliness can seriouslyimpact your thoughts. Mood-enhancingchemicals are generated when you spendtime with others. If your mood is taking aturn for the worse, connect with people youenjoy being around and who support you.

Tired – disrupted sleep and poor bed time habits can leave youfeeling tired and flat. Setting up consistent bed time routinescan work wonders for improving the quality and consistency ofyour sleep. Get off the screens at least an hour before bed timeand keep screens out of your room. Keep a notebook besideyour bed and jot down any nagging thoughts before you go tosleep, knowing you can deal with them in the morning.

Lots of other factors can affect your mood, but HALT is a greatplace to start!

Ms Appleby, Guidance Officer
