During National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June), some of our Aboriginal students partici-pated in a morn-ing tea organised

by Salisbury and Tea Tree Gully Councils. They learnt a lot, had fun, and were great ambassadors for our school.

I talked to all students at an assembly during National Reconciliation Week about the referendum that may be held to recognise Aboriginal people in the Australian Constitution. I encour-aged students to think about this national issue and also to ask our Aboriginal students what they think.

Since the beginning of this term, teachers and year level managers have been following up students whose Term 1 reports were unsatis-factory. Teachers have been support-ing students to complete tasks and we are hoping to see an increase in task completion, as well as the num-ber of students achieving A and B grades in the term 2 reports.

Year 11 and 12 teachers completed a snapshot report in week 5, Term 2. This assists Sally Stewart, Rhett Swanson and Mat Rotolo to monitor senior students closely to help them to improve their attendance and work output. Please contact them if you have any concerns.

Our major upgrades through the South Australian Government’s STEM Works program have pro-gressed to the detailed planning stage. This will be completed by 20 July.

Sachiko Kurose, our Assistant Japanese Teacher, with an Aussie!

The next stage will be the tender process to select the builders. We anticipate building will begin in Term 4 and go well into 2018.

Just a few words about some special learning activities your son or daughter might be involved in during week 8 (19-23 June) this term:

Year 8 students will be immersed in a 3 day intensive Business and Economics program, which is part of the Year 8 Australian curriculum

Year 9 students will participate in a 2 day Enterprise @ Work Program that begins their prepara-tion for work experience in the last week of term 4

Year 10 students will attend the Flinders University Enrichment Program

Year 11 and 12 students will have their semester 1 SACE examina-tions

Year 9-12 Performing Arts stu-dents will be rehearsing for and performing at our Arts Showcase.

Ps I know that many students have completed the 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge already. Has your son or daughter? There’s still plenty of time to encourage them to take on the Challenge as it finishes at the begin-ning of September. All English teach-ers are working on it!

TERM 2 REPORTS WILL BE HANDED TO STUDENTS, UPLOADED TO DAYMAP

The theme: ‘Let’s Take the Next Steps’ In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 refer-endum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. To celebrate National Reconciliation Week Ms Surman (AET) and Donna with 8 of our Aboriginal students Shaquille, Stephen, Kevin, Montanna, Veritey, Tyrome, Nathanual and Stellar attended a special Morning Tea at Golden Grove Arts Centre hosted by Salisbury and Tea Tree Gully Councils. Keynote speaker was Jack Kanya Buckskin who spoke about “Our Languages Matter - Kaurna Language”. Through

Jack’s story telling, he was able to pass on his knowledge relating to learning and teaching the Kaurna language and

how it is important to continue to teach our young people to ensure the existence of language. Jack spoke about the

history of Aboriginal people in South Australia and how language and culture was taken from them. It is important that

we remember that language continues to change and develop, just as the English language continually changes and

adapts to add new words, the Kaurna language too changes. We were also fortunate to see a musical performance by

Robert Taylor who played the didgeridoo, guitar and also sang. It was a fantastic morning.

On 30th May to 1st of June some of our SAASTA students took part in the Aboriginal Power Cup. This is a fantastic

program that allows students to gain SACE credits for bookwork and leads to the 3 day football carnival. On the final

day, the students performed a cultural dance on the Adelaide Oval prior to the Port Adelaide game.

The theme for the Aboriginal Power Cup for 2017 is Our Languages Matter. This theme encourages students to learn

about their culture, what makes every language group unique, and the importance of culture and identity to Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander people across our nation.

Aboriginal Power Cup—Integrated Learning Stage 1&2 Aimed at both male and female students, the Aboriginal Power Cup subject offers curriculum which culminates in the

annual Aboriginal Power Cup Carnival. The 3 day event focuses on cultural activities, health, career and tertiary path-

ways and the much hyped 9-A-Side football competition.

Some of our school’s Year 9, 10 and 11 EALD (English as an Additional Lan-guage or Dialect) students attended a community dinner with acclaimed Aus-tralian author, Mem Fox at The Welcome Centre on April 6

th. Students, along

with their teachers Ms Michelle Padilla (EALD Coordinator), Ms Tess Standen (former EALD teacher) and Filomena Mercurio (Assistant Principal), were invited to the community dinner by former student and current SSO, Fida Hussein, who works to support many of our Afghani students in the classroom. Mem Fox was the special guest at The Welcome Centre’s monthly communi-ty dinner, where she presented a reading of her new book, “I’m Australian Too”, a story written in celebration and support of our nation’s refugees. Students were excited and honoured to meet the celebrated author, sharing with her, stories of their own experiences as refugees, and their journeys to Australia. She invited some of our EALD students to join her table at dinner, where they spoke of their studies in the Year 11 EALD class, analysing a selection of famous children’s storybooks – some of which were her very own books! Students later had an opportunity to chat with Mem Fox at length and present her with copies of our school library’s collection of books including classics like “Possum Magic”, “Where Is The Green Sheep?” and “Wilfrid Gordon McDon-ald Partridge”, which Mem Fox autographed, adding each of our students’ names to their books, as a reminder of the special night.

A small group of Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students were invited to attend a first year Law lecture at Flinders University on May 16th. Students were invited to sit in on the two hour Law in Australian Society lecture by Dr Maria Giannacopoulos, Flinders Law School's Post Graduate Coordinator. The lecture was an opportunity for our students, who have an interest in tertiary studies and Law, to gain an insight not normally open to secondary schools, and get an inside look at what it's like to be a Law student in a lecture, at one of our state's world renowned universities.

Our students were warmly welcomed to the lecture by Dr Giannacopoulos, who introduced them to the undergraduates, and invited the visitors to contribute to the Q & A portion of the session. While the discussion amongst the undergraduate students became contentious at times, some of our year 11s and 12s displayed confidence and conviction in joining the lively dialogue. Students reported that they saw direct connections between their current Legal Studies topic at school, and the theme of this day's lecture, "Executive Power: Refugees, Asylum Seekers and the Politics of Exclusion", explaining that this was a uniquely enjoyable experience for them, which proved helpful in considering their future work and study pathways.

SACHIKO KUROSE—Japanese Teacher Visiting Para Hills High School It has been three months since I came here. I’ve learned and experienced so much during my time in Australia. One of the many great things about Adelaide is its accessibility so I enjoy going to the beaches, the markets, parks, and cafes. One weekend I went to the Urimbirra Wild-Life Park with Ms. Scott and Dr Swanson. I patted the koalas and kangaroos there. They were so cute. The koala was softer than I thought. I want to hold the koalas next time!

On Monday 29th May, our Year 12s and some Year 11s were treated to a performance by Marcelle Bernard, a much

sought after international speaker and author. Marcelle’s presentation included techniques to develop leadership and communication skills, with an emphasis on public speaking, impromptu speaking and interviews. Our students were captivated, enthralled and very engaged. They enjoyed her humour and knowledge and I think, gained much from the session. Hopefully what they learnt will stay with them and help them in real life situations. Jenny Fantinel English/ Humanities Coordinator.

On Thursday 1st of June students from the Disability Unit were invited at attend an Aussie Rules and Cricket coaching

clinic at the Mega Courts Indoor Sports Complex in Windsor Gardens. Nearly 20 students from the Disability Unit took part in a round robin coaching clinic that had instructors from the SANFL and Dream Cricket Academy, participating in a wide range of drills and activities. The Spe-cial Olympics team were wonderful in setting all of this up for 5 participating schools. All of our students enjoyed the fact that they worked a lot with mentoring students from St.Paul’s College. All of our students received certificates and medals for their hard work and participation.

Para Hills High School is a DECD Specialist Science School. We work with six local Primary schools to co-develop units of the Australian Science Curriculum. The Year 6-9 students are engaged in a wide range of topics that they research as projects. Their work involves the design of experiments to test an idea, analyse their results and re-design their experiment. The program has worked because of a brilliant team of enthusiastic teachers and their students. The teachers are Maddy Walkom and Emily Huzzell from East Para Primary School, ex PHHS student, now teacher, Tamara Jamal-Awar from Ingle Farm Primary School, Wendy Barlow from Keller Road Primary School, Jefferson Knight from North Ingle Primary School, Andrew Walker and Robert Cornell from Para Hills P-7 School and Michelle Hopkins and Michelle Kynenburgf rom Para Hills West Primary School. The Primary teachers are partnered with Rhett Swanson, Kylie Le Leu, Nancy Xavier, Dipleen Arneja, Carolyn Naumann and Joh Roubanis from PHHS. The teachers regularly get together to discuss their work and plan the projects that students work on. We also do a mini workshop. In the most recent session, Carolyn Naumann and Laboratory Manager, Michelle Smith, had participants trial the ‘experiment in a bag’, which was a kind of chemistry forensic detective puzzle, where we had to observe as much as we could to work out what was in the bag. It was a great example of something safe and simple, that was really open-ended and difficult to solve. Problems faced by scientists are just like that, and STEM activities are designed to model the real-world hard problems that people are trying to solve. On Tuesday 8

th August, the six Primary schools and Year 8’s from PHHS will be presenting their work at an expo in the

PHHS Gym. The event will be open from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Teachers, students and families from all of the schools are encouraged to come along. We would love to see you at the Expo, in our gymnasium at Para Hills High School.
