30 November 2010 No. 19 FROM THE PRINCIPAL : Mark Your Calendars! Annual Awards Night Wednesday, 8 December 2010 7.00pm Award recipients will receive notification by letter from their Year Coordinator on Friday 3 December 2010. It is the expectation of the College that all students receiving awards are present on this night. Dear Parents and Friends of Holy Cross Some recent media reports have indicated that the ACARA My School website, originally planned to be released in December, will be postponed, with no alternative release date provided at this stage. These media reports are correct although we do not yet have official confirmation from ACARA or the Minister for Schools, Mr Peter Garrett. There have been numerous recent difficulties that need to be resolved around the MySchool site and its data, for example, especially 2009 recurrent income and capital expenditure for schools, which is to be reported on the website for the first time this year. There has also been work done to resolve acknowledged issues around the ICSEA score. The ICSEA score is significant in that it determines the pool of ‘like’ schools against which a school’s performance might be judged. ICSEA (The Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage) is a measure that combines socio-economic status, area (regional or remote area), proportion of Indigenous students and other factors. The fact that the measure was ‘not quite right’ in the first iteration of MySchool is reflected in the fact that ACARA have contin- ued to refine the ICSEA as a comparative measure. The 2009 ICSEA formula resulted in some unrealistic com- parisons between schools that were not helpful in understanding the good things that particular schools had to offer. One area of the second iteration of the MySchool website that I look forward to is the charts that will illustrate growth from Year 7 to 9. This is the area for which a 7-12 secondary school can take the credit and must take the responsibility. It illus- trates ‘what you did with what you were given’. It does not allow a school, selective by whatever means, to boast of high scores borne largely of their selectivity. Holy Cross will stand strong by its 2010 record in this regard, having average achieved growth in Literacy in Year 9 of 16.5% above State Average. Recent school life and the involvement of Holy Cross parents It has been a busy couple of weeks with a extensive involve- ment from Holy Cross parents, new and old. In addition to the strong and very much appreciated parental support of the Year 10 Graduation Mass, the Year 12 Formal was held last Tuesday evening at Doltone House at Darling Harbour. It was attended by very many of the Year 12 parents who enjoyed the wonderful spirit of celebration and joy that comes not only for a student on the completion of Year 12, but for a student’s parents as well! The opportunity for our parents to spend an evening with the newest adults in our Holy Cross family made for a great atmosphere and a truly memorable night. In addi- tion to this, we welcomed a very enthusiastic new group of parents and their sons to Holy Cross at the successful Year 7/2011 Orientation Evening held last Wednesday evening.

Annual Awards

Night Wednesday, 8 December 2010

7.00pm Award recipients will receive notification by letter

from their Year Coordinator on Friday 3 December 2010.

Rounding off these couple of weeks was the Back to Holy Cross Day held on Sunday, 21 November. Old Boys and their families incredibly spanning more than 80 years took the time to spend an hour or two at Holy Cross on the day. The day was made possible through the generosity of the staff and the student vol-unteers on the day, and I offer them a huge vote of thanks on behalf of the community.

I would particularly like to highlight the visit of one of our old-est Old Boys who visited on the day. I leave you with this piece about Mr Jack Walsh, written by Sam Spur, our local media offi-cer for publication in the local press. Jack Walsh —ever a proud Holy Cross Old Boy. Adam Taylor Principal

In the Mid 20’s, John Walsh (known as Jack) moved

from Waverley to Tennyson Road Gladesville with his parents and three younger brothers, where his father brought a horse drawn milk cart, and distributed milk to the Hunters Hill area for Peel’s Dairy (now a park in Gladesville). Being 11 years old, Jack was considered one of the youngest and also one of the first day boys, when he was enrolled at Holy Cross.

Jack loved the academic part of school life at Holy Cross

as well as the sports the school offered. Holy Cross instilled a love of reading, which Jack took into his adult life, especially Banjo Patterson, Keats, Shelley, Shakespeare and countless oth-ers. The Gladesville Library, originally part of the hardware shop (now Mitre10) was visited often on the way home from Holy Cross. Jack has always been able to recite passages from several Banjo Patterson poems and Shakespeare plays with a particular love for Hamlet. Even into his 90’s, there have been many dinners with family and friends that include Jack reciting a poem or an extract from Shakespeare’s Hamlet - “Alas, poor Yorick........”

In his later years at Holy Cross, Jack earned the sprint

champion medal which allowed him to compete at St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill sports day.

In 1929, Hockey was introduced to Holy Cross, by Brother Macarten. Being a left hander, Jack was-

n’t able to play hockey, but he and his family, like many other Holy Cross families, were avid followers of the Holy Cross A or B grade Hockey teams. In 1930, the A grade team went straight to the grand finals undefeated. One Sunday morning the Sunday newspaper was opened by his family to the headline “SCHOOL BOYS BEAT MEN IN HOCKEY GRAND FINAL”- 4 goals to nil!

Jack is now a widower (Marie, his wife of 54 years, also a catechist for over 40 years, died 3 years

ago), with 5 children and 15 grandchildren. He has always and continues to speak very highly of Holy Cross and regularly recounts his favourite memories of the school at family dinners and in general conver-sation to friends. He really enjoyed the Holy Cross open day on Sunday and remarked the main building still looked exactly the same and was even surprised that it hadn’t deteriorated at all, thanks in part to the recent restoration by the current school community!

From the Assistant Principal I had the privilege last Thursday afternoon of driving the elective Golf Sports Group to their venue at Homebush in the Mini Bus. The boys ranged from Year 7 to Year 9 and it was such a delight to see a group of young men not only enjoy their Thursday afternoon sport but engage in such a skilful activity, where they were prepared to learn and support one another. As it turns out, the Chanel Seven program “Sydney Weekender” was at the Homebush Driving Range and our stu-dents took part in the filming of the Pro Golf Lesson Program. I watched as the boys participated in driving and chip-ping lessons, as well as putting. Sydney Weekender finished by interviewing our students and what fantastic ambas-sadors of the College they were. I would like to congratulate the students listed below on the way in which they conducted themselves in public and for the way in which they contributed to the sporting program our school offers. Keep up the good work. MCS Sports Report MCS Cricket Rounds 6 and 7 were against St.Paul’s Greystanes and All Saints Liverpool. A-Grade performed to their ability and de-feated 2nd placed Greystanes. A great result for such a talented team. They had the week off against Liverpool who don’t have an A-grade team. Our Year 9 opens remain top of the table with wins in both rounds. The 14s team recorded their first victory with a dominant display over Liverpool. The hard work has all paid off. Well done boys.

MCS Basketball We had some close games against St.Paul’s Greystanes. Our A grade having yet another nail biter and were victorious by 1 point. Outstanding games were had by Mickhail Lazarte and Cameron Bayer. The Year 9 Opens team continued on their winning way with an extremely close game. Chris Salvemini and Kurt McIntosh lead the way with scoring to keep them in semi final contention. All Saints Liverpool were too good for us winning all 3 games. A-grade had a week off as Liverpool does not have a team in that competition.

This week we play against St.Dominics Penrith. Our Basketball teams are playing at Ryde Aquatic Centre. A Grade Cricket is at Patterson Park Penrith. Year 9 Opens at Monash Park and Under 14s at Westminister Park. Berg Shield Our Berg Shield team had a very close game against DeLa Salle Revesby. The game went down to the wire with our last wicket combination almost getting the boys into the next round. Brad Denlow and Mitchell Bald-win turned an almost hopeless situation into a victory. Our bowlers managed to dismiss Revesby for 156. We fell 4 runs short on 152 runs. Well done in getting to the 3rd round. Special thanks to Mr.Kemp for coaching the team. Better luck next year. Internal Sport Golf Students who attend Golf for sport on Thursdays were asked to be part of a promotional filming for the Olympic Park Golf Centre. As part of the Channel 7 show, Sydney Weekender, the boys were filmed on the driving range showing their im-proved golfing skills off for the cameras. Congratulations on your new found fame. I’ve been informed that it is due to be televised in 2011. House Shirts A reminder to all students that they must have their house shirt with them every Thursday for sport. If they fail to do so they will not be able to attend their sport. It is a school requirement to bring and wear your house shirt during Thursday sport. A huge improvement has been made each week, let’s keep this going. Well done. Mr.Whitty Sport Coordinator

MCS Cricket The Year 7 MCS Cricket team completed their first victory of the season last Thursday with a resounding 10 wicket victory over All Saints Liverpool.

Bowling first, Jacob Saleh (2/16) and Tayla McCabe (3/0) tore through the top order to have All Saints reeling at 5/6 after 4 overs. They were well backed up in the field with Vince Simeti snarring two catches, the second a KFC Classic Catch at backward square leg. Cooper Henwood and Ben De Caria cleaned up the tail as All Saints collapsed to be all out for 35. In reply, our openers Cooper Henwood and Jacob Saleh wasted no time in chasing down the runs with victory achieved at the end of the 3rd over.

Well done to all the boys on their attitude and sportsmanship though the day and throughout the season so far. Spe-cial mention also to Conor McConnell who had the boys pumped and ready to go with 'Rocky' on his Ipod docking station!
