Last Friday was a great day for student leadership and all it demonstrates within our Catholic school communities.

At midday I attended the commissioning of leaders at St Virgil’s College and was impressed by the conviction with which the boys publicly committed to serving their fellow students informed by the story of Blessed Edmund Rice. Scott Brennan, Old Virgilian and GYC graduate of 2000, spoke to the boys of his dreams and successes and most importantly of the unexpected challenges he has recently faced with his health. It was profound advice.

Later that afternoon our GYC student leaders and their families were welcomed to a reception where their generosity to our community was aknowlegeded. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS SUCCESSFUL AND ENGAGED LEARNING On 13 March 2015 at our Commendation Ceremony, we will celebrate students’ academic, sporting, cultural and/or service achievements and effort from the previous year. The ceremony is an excellent opportunity to rejoice in our Christian values and positive learning culture. It is timely for us to find inspiration from this, by considering the characteristics, belief systems and habits of successful students in our College. THE LENTEN JOURNEY TO EASTER BEGINS…Yesterday (Wednesday) we gathered on each Campus for Liturgies of the Word which invited all to prepare for Lent by engaging in being more prayerful and mindful, more generous and more disciplined. In his recent Catholic Communique to staff in Catholic schools, our new Director of Catholic Education, Mr John Mula, said, “Ash Wednesday marks the begin-ning of Lent and the chance to receive a cross of ashes on our forehead to symbolise our oneness with Christ and our own mortality. We leave the Church with the mark still on our foreheads so that we carry the sign of the cross out into the world. However, that is the only time in Lent when we are encouraged to be ‘external’ in what we do.” Here are some ‘exter-nals’ worthy of consideration to carry forward throughout the Lenten period (author unknown) ...

Give up complaining - focus on gratitude.Give up pessimism - become an optimist.

Give up harsh judgments - think kindly thoughts.Give up worry - trust Divine Providence.Give up discouragement - be full of hope.Give up bitterness - turn to forgiveness.

Give up hatred - return good for evil.Give up negativism - be positive.Give up anger - be more patient.

Give up pettiness - become mature.Give up gloom - enjoy the beauty that is all around you.

Give up jealousy - pray for trust.Give up gossiping - control your tongue.

Give up sin - turn to virtue.Give up giving up - hang in there!

WALK FOR HOPEOur first Walk for Hope grew from our desire to reach out to the victims of the tsunami in Aceh on 26 December 2004 This year the College will raise money for Caritas Australia through Project Compassion. The theme for 2015 is Food for Life and this was the focus on our educational, fun, inter-House activities during Walk for Hope, yesterday. Please consider donating online to Caritas at www.caritas.org.au or through your son’s or daughter’s Guilford Young College House page or through the Project Compassion box held by the tutor.

UNVEILING OF PAINTINGS, CATHEDRAL CENTREOur Principal, Mrs Bobby Court, Hobart College Captains, Blaise Heaney and Alex Donnelly, along with Innocent Michael, Hadi Sulieman and Ochen Ochaya, represented GYC at the unveiling of two paintings commissioned for the Cathe-dral Centre which encapsulate Christ reaching out to refugees and asylum seekers. The students were very moved by the account of a young woman’s journey from the Sudan to Australia. Archbishop Julian Porteous blessed the paintings.

THANK YOU, FR BRIAN NICHOLSGYC attended last Sunday’s formal farewell from the Cathedral for Fr Brian Nichols. His 16 years of pastoral ministry included offering GYC generous service, wise counsel, often presiding at wonderful liturgies and ritual prayer. We wish him well as parish priest at Sandy Bay-Taroona Parish.

COURSE CHANGES Many students have made changes to their course of study over the past two weeks. Parents will have signed a form to approve these changes or confirmed the change by phone or email. If you have any questions about your son’s or daughter’s subjects please contact us. From Week 3 a change will only be considered where a communication is received from a parent and it may be necessary to make an appointment to discuss the change. Many classes are now full.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY At House Assemblies last week students were presented with information relating to our academic integrity requirements which includes information about plagiarism and the College Deadlines and Exten-sions Policy. Students have signed an internal declaration form and later in the term they will be required to sign a TQA form to guarantee that they will abide by the external assessment rules of the TQA. The TQA imposes serious conse-quences if students are found to be in breach of these regulations. Further information is available at the TQA website at tqa.tas.gov.au and from our College website at www.gyc.tas.edu.au/courses

QUALITY ASSURANCE MEETINGS On Tuesday 10 March (following the long weekend) all GYC teachers will be involved in meetings with colleagues from other Catholic, independent and government colleges. This day is a valuable opportunity for ensuring comparability of standards, the sharing of resources and general professional learning. It is a student free day and no classes will be held. We encourage students to make some time available on this day for working on assignments, preparation for tests or revision of work covered.

INTERIM REPORTS On Friday 13 March Interim Reports will be posted. These will provide parents and students with an overview of general progress and application at this stage of the year together with a tutor report.

UTAS COLLEGE PROGRAM The UTAS College Program allows Year 11 and 12 students to study universi-ty-level units at the same time or in addition to their TCE studies. The program provides great opportunities to extend and reward hard-working students. UTAS will hold an Information Session for students, parents and teachers on Wednesday 25 February, 4-6pm at the Uni Centre Foyer, Sandy Bay Campus. Further information is available on the College website, www.gyc.tas.edu.au/courses Mrs Vivienne Hale, Hobart; Miss Heidi Gregg, Glenorchy
