Woolworths Earn & Learn Our school is taking part in Woolworths Earn & Learn community program. This year, they are giving away more than $5 million worth of educational resources for Primary and Secondary schools all over Australia, including ours! From July 18 to October 18 2011, Woolworths will give you one Earn & Learn point for every $10 you spend in store (excluding the purchase of cigarettes, alcohol and gift cards). Points will automatically appear on your shopping dockets. All you need to do is save those dockets and bring them to school (Woolies have given us a special collection box). At the end of the 9-week program, we can redeem our collection of points against a choice of more than 7,000 educational resources. The list is extensive and includes library books, classroom equipment, art and craft materials and much, much more...There’s no limit to the number of points we can collect, so your participation will really make a difference. The more points we earn, the more resources we can order!Help Woolies to help our school.Start collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn points today!

On Friday 9 September students from Years 3, 4 and 5 went to Walter Peate Oval in Kingscliff for the Tweed Cricket Gala Day. It was sponsored by KFC and Milo and organised by the Queensland Bulls

and Active After School Care. We played three games; run around the big dog leg, diamond cricket and continuous cricket. They were all pretty fun! After that we had a lunch break and were waiting for the next set of games. However, rain started coming down from the sky! Oh no! So we had to go back to school :( It was a great day overall!

Music NewsHi, I’m Liza Beamish. I’m an opera singer and my work has led me to many interesting places including London, Vienna, the Czech Republic, North Korea and and many cities, large and small around Australia (including the Sydney Opera House). You can hear my voice on the Sun Super ad being played on TV at the moment. If you’re interested in learning classical singing from me here at school, phone: 0413 046 106 or fill out an ‘Application for Instrumental Lessons’ form available from Student Admin. I also run a studio at home where I teach all styles of singing including popular and musical theatre.

Human Society and It’s Environment NewsAustralian Curriculum Commences In NSW 2014Recently, Mrs Walker, Miss Conlin and myself attended a professional development seminar hosted by the Association of Independent Schools. The aim was to review the draft NSW History syllabus developed from Australian Curriculum content and to have input into its design, with implementation occurring statewide in 2014.

Literacy Professional DevelopmentLindisfarne was recently host to Ms Angela Lehmer from Literacy Solutions who ran an informative workshop for staff on the topic of “Helping students read to learn when they are still learning to read”. Ms Pelc, Mr Wilson, Miss Conlin, Ms Rutter, Mrs Walker and Mrs Makepeace attended. The seminar highlighted how classroom and assessment activities can be designed to promote improvements in literacy while learning.

School Certificate Credential Concludes 2011 The Board of Studies has advised that 2011 will be the last year in which the Year 10 School Certificate credential is awarded. The Board is currently in consultation with stakeholders over the form of a new credential from 2012 for students who leave schooling prior to the Year 12 Higher School Certificate. This, combined with the new Australian Curriculum, presents some exciting opportunities for curriculum development now that the “big stick” of the external Year 10 School Certificate examinations has been removed.Bryson Coverdale, Director of Human Society and it’s Environment
