Are you Going to Heaven? “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:26 NIV After a looooonng winter, it appears spring is at last ready to break! And with it The Most Impor- tant Celebration on the Christian calendar – Resurrection Sunday – Easter. Culturally Christmas is far more popular. Everyone loves a baby and a good story to go with it, but Easter, the cross and the resurrection is why that little baby came. Jesus never commanded us to celebrate his birth, but he did command us to remember his death and memorialized it in the two sacraments he gave his church – baptism and communion. Baptism symbolizes the washing away of sin through faith in Christ and communion celebrates the ongoing relationship that is ours with God be- cause of Christ’s death and resurrection. Both sacraments point to where that new life and new relationship begin – at the cross and resurrection of Jesus. Without the cross there is no forgiveness of sins, without the resurrection there is no gift of eternal life. Without Christ we are lost in sin and separated from God forever. No one will go to heaven for “being a good person.” Although I talk to people every month who believe they will go to heaven because they are “good people.” If that were true – Jesus would not have died on the cross – he’d have said to his disciples, “You’re good people just don’t mess up too bad and I’ll see you in paradise.” But in fact what the Scripture says is just the opposite: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. “All we like sheep have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6. “While we were yet sinner Christ died for us.” Ro- mans 5:8. Jesus is not just a way to God, he is the only way (John 14:6). And the way to heaven is not doing good works or believing in Jesus and doing good works. The way to heaven is trusting in what Jesus did for you on the cross period – nothing added to it! Of course one of the results of believing in Jesus is a changed life and many good works – but not one of them adds a thing to the fact of our salvation – that is a matter of faith in Christ from first to last (Romans 1:17). Good works are the caboose of salvation following as a result of what Jesus did – but he himself is the engine. Pity the person who sits in the “caboose of good works” and expects to get to heaven – that path is dead on the tracks because we can never be good enough to merit heaven or add in any way to what Christ has done to bring us there. Our trust must be totally in him and only him, his grace, his mercy, his act of saving love. And that’s what Easter’s all about! As Easter Day approaches let me ask you a simple question. What are you trusting in to get you to heaven? Draw a circle around the answer you think is correct in the three answers bellow: 1. Jesus. 2. Jesus + Good Works 3. Good Works. If your answer is anything other than number one – you are not on the road to heaven at all. But you can be today if you will pray this simple prayer and mean it in your heart: Lord Jesus, I am a sinner and there is nothing I can do to save myself. I believe you are the sinless Son of God and that you paid completely for my sin on the cross. I believe God raised you from the dead and that you will give the gift of eternal life to all who trust in you, receiving your gift of salvation. Please forgive my sin and receive me as your child. Please put your Holy Spirit in my heart so I can begin to live for you. Thank you for your precious gift. Amen. If that is the prayer of your heart, then you may know that you have eternal life because of what Jesus has done for you. As it says in 1 John 5:13: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” If reading this article and praying this prayer has helped you or someone you love come to saving faith in Christ, please let me know here at the church office so I can celebrate with you God’s gift of eternal life! Our Book Recommendation for March is. . . Living the Resurrection: The Risen Christ in Everyday Life By: Eugene H. Peterson Join the author of the best-selling Mes-sage Bible and travel back to Jesus' time so you can experience the Resurrection through the eyes of the biblical witnesses. You'll be a participant in the story, so its meaning and wonder can enliven your soul as never be-fore. Christ's friends were utterly trans-formed by his resurrection. Their friendship, their work, and even their meals together took on a new meaning and purpose. The same can happen to you today as the Resur-rection becomes the core reality of your spiritual formation.

~ AWANA NEWS ~ February was a very full month as we started it off on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at Monument Bible Church with our annual Bible Quiz. This competition is for our T&T club-bers (3rd–6th grade) and they did an awesome job!!! The following are the results from the day: T&T GIRLS ~ Book 1 - 2nd Place:Tiersa Darley, Gabriel Holub & Baily Kreider; Book 2 - 4th Place:Mikayla Kreider; Book 3 - 3rd Place:Kayla Schanaman & Book 4 - 2nd Place:Abigail Peterson. T&T BOYS ~ Book 1 - 2nd Place: Hunter Hancock & Austin Rhamy; Book 2 - 1st Place: Jacob Pieper & Spencer Riddick (Spencer had a perfect score on the Multiple Choice por-tion of the quiz.) Thank you, Clubbers, for representing Zion well and, most importantly, glorifying God!!! Thank you to the Coaches ~ Margaret Hancock, Andy Griess & Mark Harris. Thank you, as well to other Zion AWANA Staff that helped out with the event: Carli Rose, Carol Parvin, Linda Peterson, Deb Pieper and Cheryl Rose. The next day, Sunday, Feb. 3rd, was Sports Day. Sports Day is in conjunction with Super Bowl Sunday. We change our schedule to 2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m., the clubbers are allowed to wear their favorite sports apparel whether it be from their school, AYSO, college level, pro level, etc. and we bring in a local Christian athlete from area high schools to speak to the clubbers. This year, we were blessed to have our own Heather Burton. From the beau-tiful smile she always has on her face, most people would not know what Heather has been through in the last 6 years. She told her story that began in 6th grade. She participated in track, basketball and softball – her favor-ite being softball. (That’s “my” girl!!! ) About this time, she began having severe pain in her foot and so began her and her parents journey into the medical realm to find answers to the questions for this “strange unknown ill-ness”. Ultimately, they sought God’s divine healing, but in what seemed like silence from Him, they traveled to Mayo Clinic, Colorado and locally. Along the way, Heather en-countered hurtful comments from her peers at school in their disbelief of her physical pain as the pain would come and go and she would need crutches at times as it was too painful to put weight on her foot and other times she would not have any pain at all. This whole ordeal/process would at times cause her faith in God to waiver and also create feelings of anger toward Him. When they ended up in Colorado this past Fall, they felt this was their “last resort” to finding an answer before Heather would have to give up her dream of playing softball at the college level. Well, God, in His divine timing, led them to a doctor that knew almost immediately what it was. I don’t know the proper medical term for it, but she had in her foot what a lot of people get in their wrist – carpal tunnel! And, so after a relatively simple surgical procedure, Heather is pain free and she announced to us during her devotion that she has been accepted to play softball for the Black Hills State University Women’s Yellow Jackets Team – where their competitors “Fear the Sting”!!! Thank you, Heather, for sharing your physical/spiritual/mental/

emotional journey with us! The clubbers in T&T and Sparks have been prac-ticing hard on Sunday afternoons before our regular club time for AWANA Games, which will be held on Saturday, March 8th at WNCC. Sparks will compete at 1:00 p.m. and T&T will compete after them at 3:00. Please come out and support the Scottsbluff Zion teams!!! Grandparent’s Night was the last night of the month on the 24th. We were blessed to have Violet Har-ris share a devotion on “Love” with us and tell us the story behind the “Jesus Loves Me” song. I told her that I could not allow her to “stay in retirement long” before asking her to help us out with a devotion and the most appropriate time (in my mind) was for Grandparent’s Night as she and Pastor Amos are two of the godliest grandparents I know!!! I also mentioned that I love Grandparent’s Night as it is such a blessing to me to see that 25 years after AWANA was started here at Zion, we have had at least 3 generations of families that have either worked in or been involved in the program. The message of God’s gift of Salvation is still being delivered to the clubbers that come through our doors and I am so humbled by God’s blessing upon our club and by the faith-ful support of these grand-parents and parents. Staff Meeting – Sunday, March 9th at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel - Staff, please plan to attend this very important meeting to make plans for our end of the year events. (Can you believe it’s that time already???) I know that I have already gone over my “allotted” space for my article but I have a very cute story from Handbook time at a recent club meeting and also a very cute letter written by one of our Sparky club-bers to our AWANA missionaries, Rick and Fairy Hattan to share with you. First, the handbook time story: Our T&T Boys Director, Mark Harris, was working with one of the clubbers on a particular section that was talking about the birth of Christ. He was questioning the young man about where Jesus was born – looking for the answer manger/stable. He gave Mark the answers, Israel and Bethlehem, to which Mark responded, Yes, but what is the place? Then the boy replied, after a few “ums”, “Oh, yeah, at The Petting Zoo!!!” Second, the following letter was written by Miss Halley Schanaman, a 2nd grader in Sparks: “To: Rick and Fairy Hattan I prayed for you for 16 days because I love you how you are. My name is Hal-ley Schanaman. I go to a church called Zion Egelical Church and I go to AWANA. I am in sparks and I am the one that has short red hair and I have a skiny body. My birthday is March 20 2000. I am going to be eight years old. Where do you live. Do you live here in the U.S.A. because I do. From Halley.” May you be blessed this Easter season with the true joy that we, as Christians, celebrate not only at Easter but every day ~ Jesus, Our Risen Savior!!! And, don’t forget that His Loving Father that sent Him to this earth to die for our sins, IS IN CONTROL!!! Cheryl Rose, Commander

MOPS @ Night (Mothers of Preschoolers)

With the MOPS year well under way, we had a great meeting in January which included the musical talents of Tami Hughson. We really enjoyed her “Spilled Out” music and stories and were thrilled she was able to share with us as we had to cancel our December meeting when she was origi-nally scheduled to speak.

For our February meeting we are looking forward to hearing from Michelle Weimer who will be speaking to us about balancing work and home. Each of the moms who attends our group struggles to find the balance between car-ing for their home and children while maintaining part or full-time employment.

At each meeting, we strive to provide a speaker and conversation relating to real challenges our moms are facing every day. We provide a chance for moms to come together and share in each others joys and challenges.

On March 7th and 8th we will be busy making hun-dreds of cabbage burgers. This is the 2nd year MOPS @ Night will be selling cabbage burgers. The funds raised will be used to send MOPS leaders to training at the Summit in Denver or the annual MOPS Convention in October.

We appreciate your support of our MOPS ministry. If you are interested in buying cabbage burgers there is a sign-up sheet in the foyer at the church or you can contact any MOPS mom. Feel free to contact Jenn with your order by Monday, March 3rd. Burgers are $30 per dozen ($15 per half-dozen) and can be picked up on Friday March 7th from 2 pm – 4 pm or on Saturday March 8th from 4 pm – 6 pm.

We pray that God continues to use our ministry to touch the lives of mothers of preschoolers. As always we ap-preciate your prayers and support.

Jeremiah House: On the 19th, the kids enjoyed their favorite meal that we provide once a year. They had Albert-sons chicken, salad, potatoes, fruit and lots of cake and cookies. They really ate. One could tell the chicken is a real treat. We served 65 people. We only have two more meals till the end of the school year. Time flies by. Thanks go to Cindy and Armand Orndoff, Helen Maier, Barb Steffensen for serving and the Ladies Guild for much of the food. It is great that everyone is so generous. Serving from the Heart, Terry Martin

* * * * * * * * * * * * * MISSIONS REPORT: After the Church yearly meeting, I sent the money which was approved to the various missions. I am receiving many thank you letters expressing their appreciation for the contributions. Tom & Sandi Hofmann were here for the Bible Quiz. Their goal this year is to bring up their financial support to allow them to be missionaries with the Awana International Ministry. They are a hard working and dedicated couple that devote their lives to bringing the knowledge of Jesus to children across the region. Please keep them in your prayers. Missions in action, Terry Martin

* * * * * * * * * * * * * SUNDAY SCHOOL: We are so excited for spring and Easter and we have so much to celebrate because of our risen Savior. We will be holding our Sunday School Easter Egg Hunt on March 22 at 1:00, (hopefully outside this year) so mark your calendars. I checked with the Bible Book Store and VBS material is out. We have some great choices this year! VBS will be held on June 9-13. If you can help, please let us know in the Sunday School office. Thank you, parents, for bringing your kids to Sunday School. We (the officers) are making our rounds to visit the kids each Sunday morning, and every Sun-day we are praying for our kids and their teachers. The 45 min-utes that your child(ren) spend in Sunday School can be life changing. Praise the Lord! Sunday school is in need of wrapped Easter candy and plastic eggs. We appreciate your kindness and help so much. God Bless, Sharon, Robin, and Amy .

YOUTH: February was a full and productive month for both our senior and junior high youth groups. We con-tinue to have a faithful group of high school students each Wednesday night for Bible study. We have spent all school year studying the book of 1 John which was writ-ten to provide assurance of salvation to those who be-lieve Jesus is the Son of God who died for their sins. We are now at the end of the book, and all our students should know they have eternal life. Next we are going to start teaching the students how to share their faith with others so that they, too, may know how they can have eternal life. In our junior high group on Monday nights, we are seeing new students nearly every week who are being given the opportunity to hear the truth about Jesus that we hope God will use to change their lives. Also, in February, we took a ski trip with our junior high students and some of their families. Our group size was 34 people which included some of our junior high students, some of our junior high leaders, and several parents. It turned out to be a great day for skiing, and everyone I talked to seemed to have a great time. Looking foreword to March, I anticipate a busy time of ministry full of exciting opportunities. Our eighth grade students will be preparing for their confirma-tion. As these students pass this milestone in their life, I hope to move them right into our high school group and have them join us for Bible study. Many of these eighth grade students have told me of their plans to serve God this summer at Camp Rock or Vacation Bible School. By joining our high school Bible study as we learn how to share our faith with others, these students will be better equipped to do the ministry they plan to do this sum-mer. In our junior high group, as we discussed the cruci-fixion one night, the students expressed the desire to watch The Passion of the Christ. Sometime during the Easter season, I plan to give them the opportunity to watch it so they can get a better idea of the price Jesus paid for their salvation. Please pray that this and our other efforts this month will make a lasting impact on our students. Andy Dear Zion Family - Your kindness and caring mean so much to me. Thank you for the cards and phone calls this past month. The Lord has blessed me with my re-turn to good health and such a wonderful church family. Your Friend in Christ Joyce Johnston
