Early College High School Ten-Year Anniversary

The Early College High School (ECHS) within the Newport Mesa Unified School District celebrated their 10th anniversary this year. A special birthday celebration was held at their district office today. Through their partnership with Coastline Community College, the ECHS has been able to offer 12 college courses on their campus. Their 2016-17 school year was filled with exciting developments—they moved into modernized classrooms and offices in the fall and offered more opportunities for students to take career readiness

courses through ROP (Regional Occupation Program) and after school activity-based courses on our campus daily Monday-Thursday. Congratulations to the Early College High School on ten years of student success and for your ongoing partnership. CDMA Winter Social

The Coast District Management Association (CDMA) held their annual Winter Social for all managers throughout the district on Wednesday, December 15. This event serves as a great opportunity for managers to network and convene together at the end of the Fall Semester. Many thanks to CDMA President Paul Wisner and his executive board for putting together a very nice event. Thanks to Board President David A. Grant, Vice President Mary Hornbuckle and Board Clerk Lorraine Prinsky for attending and supporting the managers in the work they do.

End of the Mendez v. Westminster Exhibit

On December 15, the “A Class Action” Exhibit about the Mendez v. Westminster case that desgregated schools in California, officially ended and was removed from the district lobby. Many thanks to all that viewed the exhibit and attended events associated with the exhibit. The exhibit was viewed by over 300 people and provided several opportunities to interact with our local community and our students. The exhibit would not have been possible without the support of the Board of Trustees and the CCCD Foundation Board of Directors. If anyone is interested in supporting the exhbit at other locations, you may get in touch with the Museum of Teaching and Learning to learn of its next location. They can be contacted by visiting http://www.motal.org/.

Coastline Receives $1 Million Apprenticeship Grant

Coastline was recently awarded a $1 million grant from the California Community College’s Chancellor’s Office, Workforce & Economic Development Division for our California Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program (CCAP). This is one of the first cybersecurity apprenticeship programs in the nation. The program focuses on developing an apprenticeship pathway for students interested in becoming Cybersecurity Technicians. The CCAP will provide students with training in the Cybersecurity discipline while earning/learning through

paid internships. Students participating in this grant will begin the program with the CompTia A+ Hardware/Software Certification and will continue their training by attending seven networking/cybersecurity courses. While working 30 hours per week, students will take online classes to keep up-to-date and current in this ever-changing discipline, further adding to their expertise and knowledge. Each student will earn between four and six additional industry certifications in networking/cybersecurity as well as obtain 2,000 hours of paid apprenticeship experience for their resumes. Many thanks to Nancy Jones for directing, overseeing, and contributing valuable information and details that helped secure this grant and make Coastline an obvious choice to receive this! Thanks also goes to Steve Linthicum, the Project Director, and Darian Aistrich and Aeron Zentner, our grant-writing gurus in the Grants Development Department and Institutional Effectiveness Department. Our Career Technical Education faculty members, Michael Warner and Tobi West will be moving the program forward and will be a integral part to its success. Thank you, Tobi and Michael! The courses in this program will start in March of 2017 at Coastline. Students who are interested who don't have their A+ certification can enroll in Coastline's Spring, 2017 sections. The goal of the grant is to enroll 50 students in the program within 18 months. Excellent work!

Floral Design Student WINS California State Floral Association’s Student Competition Tracey Duncan, a current student in our Floral Design and Shop Management Certificate program, competed at the California State Floral Association’s Student Design Competition held on November 6th at The Original Los Angeles Flower Market in Los Angeles.

Students were required to create a Designer’s Choice piece that reflected the theme of the competition, Timeless Classic, as well as execute a

Surprise Package design. Twenty-one students from colleges in California participated in this competition, and we are so proud to announce that Tracey Duncan won FIRST Place AND the People’s Choice Award!

The holidays are here and aside from the seasonal challenges of rain, traffic and long shopping lines, it truly is a wonderful time of the year. I encourage you all to rest and relax over the break. We will be taking a break from the News Brief and will resume during the week of January 13. Enjoy your time off and I look forward to seeing you next year.
