Dear Parents

This will be the last newsletter of the term, as we close next Wednesday for the holidays. It has been wonderful to see the high level of involvement from everyone at the parent conferences which are currently happening. It is so important to have open and honest communication about the progress, current and future, of your child. Thank you for your continued commitment in this regard.

We will be saying farewell to Mr Justin Barry (Grade 6J) today, and we wish him well in his new position as Remedial Therapist at the College. We know he is going to do a fantastic job! It will be wonderful to welcome back, Mrs Shannon Jacobs, who has been on maternity leave. We do need to acknowledge Mrs Sally Luyt, our Head of Academics, who has so ably run the Intermediate Phase in Mrs Jacobs’ absence this last term, in addition to her usual duties. Thank you so much for your dedication and hard work Mrs Luyt!

Miss Caitlin Venter (Grade 3V) will be getting married to Rob Peché in the holidays. We wish the future Mr and Mrs Peché a wonderful, happy day and a future filled with many blessings

I look forward to seeing you all at the Inter House Athletics on break up day, next Wednesday. We will begin at 8.00 am and finish at 12 noon, so please come along and support your House!

Please remember that 7 May, voting day, is a Public Holiday. School will therefore re-open for the second term on THURSDAY 8 May.

Have a fabulous holiday and enjoy special time spent with family and friends. If you are travelling, please do so safely.

ASSEMBLY NEWS Thank you to 2A for their lovely assembly on ‘Respecting our Beautiful Country’. Our next

assembly, on the 14th April, will be presented by Grade 2B. All parents and

visitors are welcome to attend. Assembly begins at 07h30. We look

forward to seeing you there.

From the Sports Desk As we approach the end of term, it behoves us to take a deep breath and reflect on the term gone past and lift our gaze to look unto the horizon to what the future holds for us.

While the term had been set up clearly and precisely in terms of extra murals and the sporting fixtures, it was a clear sign of us being just the tentative planners. All the planning we had done came almost to nought as the rains played havoc and we did not get to do all that we had planned. We only managed to fit in one athletics meet, a few cricket matches and only two softball matches in a term of thirteen weeks. Swimming appears to have benefitted from the term as none of its galas were cancelled. We can only hope that next term the weather will be kinder to us; and that in the third term when we return to the summer sports, we will be able to fit in more matches. You will probably have noticed that the certificates which we normally issue at the end of the season have not taken place this term. We have come to the conclusion that the sporting activities that we are playing in the first term will be repeated in the third term. In addition, the term has been so fraught with disturbances that there was no way to measure commitment adequately. Please encourage the children to return to the same summer sports in the third term so that they receive their certificates of commitment.

The second term comes with the winter sports and these are soccer, touch rugby, netball, tennis, and cross country. Please note that there is not discrimination on the basis of gender. Any child can do any sport that they like. Please encourage them to attend as many sports as possible. It can only be good for them on many levels. Apart from the obvious benefits of physical fitness, there is also the bigger element of social interaction that our children are so much in need of. In addition, as most of our children have attention limitations, sport helps them learn to focus on a single activity in a fun and relaxed environment. Believe me when I say that sport is good for the child, in whatever scenario. Sport is second nature to the child.

Attached to this newsletter, you will find the extra murals list for the second term. This is so that you can look through it with your child during the school holidays and help them decide on one or two sports that they will participate in during the term. A few things to note about the second term is that we start on tennis in the second term, which though not a team sport , caters for the individualistic children amongst our lot, as well as helping them horn hand eye coordination. The second is that we will host mini coaching clinics for soccer and netball in the first week of the holidays in order to help them to prepare for the winter sports. Please note, further that the holiday club will only commence on the Tuesday and not on Monday as previously advertised.

The University of Pretoria has joined the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs initiative and we would like to help as well. If you would like to help, please collect your bread tags and drop them off in the bread tag jar in the front office, or

alternatively, send them with your child. All the tags will be collected and sent with Miss de Bruyn to the University

of Pretoria. They will then be recycled and the money raised from recycling will be used to buy wheelchairs for

those who cannot afford them.

Please visit the Bread tags for wheelchairs Facebook page for more information.
