How does that help me right now?” She stomped off, had a fabulous time with her small selection of friends in an acceptable socially distant manner, and not one of them (nor she!) commented on how the night would have been better if only she had managed to get her hair into the ‘perfect’ style. Whilst my daughter’s attempts at achieving hairdressing perfection were a failure according to her, it had not detracted from the overall result, a fun night with friends. Striving for perfection is admirable, but achieving it is not always possible no matter how hard we try. At Mansfield SHS, we have very high expectations in regards to behaviour, appearance and effort, but that is not to say we expect every student to look the same or every cohort to attain very high achievements in every single subject. This is completely unrealistic. What we do know, is that having high expectations lifts the efforts of all our students, and together, this helps us to achieve our best, not perfection. We all have unique flaws and exceptional strengths; this is being human. Some of us are blessed with a mind for numbers, where parabolas and Pythagorean triples are easy concepts. Others can understand Shakespeare effortlessly, run around the oval for laps on end, get a plant to grow where before there were just rocks or have a seemingly endless well of compassion for others. And for some, maths is hard and the only plants they can have are plastic. Accepting and appreciating these flaws and strengths, of trying to improve where we can and nurture what we have, is a necessary part of being happy. What I love about the ethos of Mansfield SHS, is that remaining steadfast in doing your best is really all that is asked of our students. From this platform, under the guidance of professional educators and within a schooling community of belonging and caring, they achieve incredible things. Every student at Mansfield SHS is a beautiful individual bringing different and amazing talents, ideas and strengths to our school. Yet sitting astride all those wonderful positives, are their individual weaknesses. Not one of our students is perfect and it is unfair to ask them to be, only that they try their best. Often, it seems easier to look for and find the beauty in others, to appreciate their unique qualities and even their faults, rather than to accept the same things in ourselves. This is where taking the time to be mindful, to enjoy the feeling of the sun on your face or to ‘stop and smell the flowers’ is important; finding joy in the small parts of your day will help you find joy in all parts of your life. And life, just like our hair sometimes, is not perfect, but it is beautiful. Stay safe and well, and have a lovely few weeks with your family.

Industrial Technologies and Design

Preparatory engineering

Last term, our year 10 engineerscompleted an assignment on civilstructures, leading to the developmentof prototype bridge designs modelledusing spaghetti and tested todestruction. As future engineers, theyaim to devise sustainable solutions toproblems, utilising our world’sresources effectively and responsibly.

Continuing this philosophy into term 3, our students willexamine the characteristics of energy-efficient vehicles, andthen model their findings in CO2-powered dragsters, which willbe race-tested in week 7. Accelerating from rest, some of thesevehicles are expected to reach speeds of about 100 km/h injust one second; that is about three times quicker than a Ferrari!

Year 11 engineering

Our year 11 engineers are using emerging technologies andmanufacturing processes to develop an interactiveassistive-technology device, designed to aid the developmentand retention of hand-eye coordination and memory function. They will employ 3D-modelling software to design conceptualdevices, which will be prototyped via 3D printing, laser cuttingand the construction of electronic circuits. Students will thenwrite software programs to control the Arduino microprocessorwithin their device.

Year 12 engineering

Our lead-team of engineers are studying for their final exam, encompassing a broad range of engineering concepts includingvelocity ratios, mechanical advantage, machine efficiencies, material stress-strain diagrams, alloy phase diagrams, logicsystems and machine control. Good luck students!

Languages

Benefits of bilingualism andmusic

In our school, we are fortunate to havethe support of many who value andunderstand the benefits ofbilingualism. Learning French orJapanese in year 7 and year 8 is awonderful opportunity for students tostart their bilingual (or trilingual!)journey. The language teachers always

try to find ways to make connections for students who havetrouble understanding the reason why learning other languagesis important. In particular, the French teachers use music in theirlessons on a regular basis. Sometimes a French pop song isplayed simply to enjoy the music and the different sounds thelanguage makes, but other times, a song forms part of a deeperanalysis and cultural activity.

Our music colleagues will agree with the studies that showthat both bilingualism and musical training and practice appearto protect people against the onset of dementia and othercognitive decline in later life.

https://doi.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fa0012735

Other research shows that mastery of more than one languageas well as mastery of music involves higher levels of executivecontrol, which is the management, regulation and control ofcognitive processes. Does this mean that our language andmusic students are smarter? We will not reveal our bias on thispoint!

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3221315/

What our French teachers have found is that using music inlanguage learning has a positive effect on students’pronunciation. This is supported by a series of studies fromFinland that found that in Finnish-speaking children andadults, musical aptitude correlates significantly with betterpronunciation skills in English.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18182165/

Parents can be assured though that all of these songs arecurated. A list of suitable songs is available from your child’sFrench teacher. To get you started here is a link to a cover ofEdith Piaf’s La vie en Rose by a young singer called Zaz.

Head of Year News

Year 7 and Year 8We are now half way through term 3 and it is evident byobserving our students in the classroom that they are thriving.Students are taking advantage of the array of opportunitiesavailable to them, and using these experiences to grow asindividuals. All students have identified their own characterstrengths, and these strengths provide students with theopportunity to reflect on what makes them unique, and to alsoto use them to their advantage. The strengths of our studentswill become increasingly important as they navigate themselvesthrough the remainder of the term.

The student development program focuses on the needs of ourstudents, and provides a time in the week that they are ableto develop their skills and knowledge in a range of areas. Year7 students have focused their lessons on goal setting and thejoy that can come from helping others through volunteering andrandom acts of kindness. Year 8 students have been workingtirelessly on reflecting on their own strengths and completing aresume that they are able to use when they begin looking at jobopportunities.

End of Semester 1 reports cards have now been emailed home.Students now need to be accountable for their level ofachievement, effort and behaviour results in each subject. There was close to 60 students who achieved the highest levelof achievement, effort and behaviour marks in each of theirsubjects. These students will be invited to a special morning teain week 5 to celebrate their achievement.

Year 9 and Year 10It is hard to believe that we have almost completed four weeksof the term already, and what a start to the term we have had!It is clear to see that students are enjoying the learning in theirclassrooms, and thriving in our caring learning environment. We are so proud to be part of a community that consistentlydemonstrates appreciation for and engagement in theirlearning.

Year 9

It takes integrity and honesty to be steadfast in demonstratingyour best effort. When you work hard at putting in your verybest effort, this shows integrity of character. However, it alsoinvolves being honest with yourself every lesson, every daywhen you reflect on whether you are giving your very best effortin every moment.

Semester one report cards have been issued to all students, and it is important to celebrate success and honestly reflect onareas for improvement. We would like to recognise all of ouryear 9 students as a collective on their effort and behaviourratings for semester one. In conversations with students, wereflect on how these ratings speak to their character. They letus know how much the students care about their learning, and about the respect they show for their teachers and peers. These ratings are often what potential employers will look towhen interviewing for part-time jobs as they give an indicationof the commitment that will be applied to employment.

Across our year 9 cohort, 88 students received a rating ofexcellent for effort and behaviour across all of their subjects. This is an outstanding achievement, and one that makes usextremely proud of our students.

It is also important to acknowledge academic success, as weknow how hard all of the students have worked over the lastsemester, in most unusual circumstances. When reviewingacademic success, 34 of our students received an A in sixsubjects, combined with outstanding effort and behaviourresults. These 34 students will shortly receive an invitation to acelebration lunch to be held in week 5.

This week in SDP, our students reflected on their academicand personal achievements in semester one, and set goals forsemester two. Students will reflect on these goals throughoutthe semester, and use them to facilitate coaching conversationsas we work towards continuous improvement. We encourageall families to discuss the academic and wellbeing goal thatstudents set for themselves.

Year 11 and Year 12As we enter the half way point of the term, we want to focuson accountability. This means taking responsibility and beinganswerable to the outcomes of our choices, decisions, andactions. We can hope or wish things happen to us, or wecan be intentional, take action, and make the behaviour andmindset shifts that will cause change to happen for us. Thismeans having a mindset of commitment and ownership to aresult before we set out to do something, whether it is finishingchores or doing an assessment.

What is your current mind-set? Do not leave your success upto anyone else of anything else. Own it!

Attendance

Attendance matters, every lesson, every day

As students, parents, teachers and a school community we areall responsible for the attendance process to be accurate andfor all absences to be accounted for. We encourage studentsto take ownership of their attendance and ensure they followthe process when, signing in late and when they are absent forthe day. Please note that there may be some confusion aroundsome attendance with COVID 19. Your partnership in this isgreatly appreciated.

Reminder of how to notify the school of a student’s absence:

As clearance of outstanding absences is part of the study leavecommitment, students will have their study leave cancelledcommencing Wednesday 5 August if they have any outstandingunexplained absences. Thank you for your assistance with thismatter.

Study leave

Just a reminder that study leave is a privilege not a right andstudents and parents have signed an agreement with theschool that their student will go straight home and use this timefor study. We are aware that quite a few of our students havebeen going to Garden City and other local shopping centres. Please be aware that when a group of students do this it isnoted by our community and by the retailers, who alert us tothis. We want you to have the opportunity to use this time ina valuable way, so please do the right thing otherwise we willbe forced to reconsider the use of this time. Supervision isprovided at school for those wishing to remain. We ask parentsto have a conversation with their student regarding this matter.
