I know with everything going on in Washington, D.C., these days, whether you’re conservative, liberal or in between, it can be depressing. Recently, my eldest grandson, Nolan, was completely bored as his parents were watching one of the political hearings taking place on the news. He asked why his parents were “taking over his cartoons” and, furthermore, was adamant that it was one of his grandpas who was seated at the desk facing all of “those” people. The last remark was a little distressing for my husband (to say the least!); however, we thought we would take the opportunity and turn the current negative comments coming out of mom and dad’s mouth and replace them with how wonderful our country is! Condensing over 200 years to a 30-minute conversation took some doing, with 10 minutes of the 30 discussing George Washington’s wooden teeth. I found that I was actually feeling better myself! The reflection helped us put all that is currently going on into a broader perspective, so much so that Nolan is now planning a very grand 4th of July celebration with his grandpa as “Uncle Sam,” being that “he was on television getting yelled at, and all.” As we approach this 4th of July holiday, and if you are having any difficulty finding your own “patriotism,” I encourage you to have a conversation with a small child. You will be singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag” in no time! Have a grand “4th” and a wonderful July everyone! Mary Jane

Circle of Friends NewsIf you’d like to brush up on your Greek, just ask Circle of Friends!

This month we learned all about Greek history and culture. From theancient gods to the Olympics to Grecian current affairs. We created ourown Ancient Greek vases and painted our own versions of what the cityof Santorini looks like. Our outings this month included a trip to Dave& Buster’s for a delicious feast and a chance to show off our Olympicgame skills at skee-ball. We also went to the movies and watched WonderWoman, which we all enjoyed very much. Other outings included a tripto Marion Davies Beach House in Santa Monica, a Greek luncheon atEden Garden Bar and Grill and a trip to the horse races at Santa AnitaRacetrack. We had a fun-filled month and are looking forward to moreadventures this summer!

Neighborhood NewsWhat better way to beat the

June Gloom than to head to thebeach? Last month theNeighborhood traveled to SantaMonica and had a delicious picniclunch along the shoreline.Although there was a bit ofovercast, it was still a beautifulday spent together. We finishedoff our outing by traveling alongthe coastline and enjoying thebeautiful scenery. Our themes thismonth were as varied andengaging as ever, with topicsranging from cat adoptions toHawaii Day to Country WesternDay. Every day was full of newand exciting information as wellas a time to reminisce on pastexperiences. June was a very goodmonth for us, and we are excitedto see what July has in store!

Summertime means fun in the sun!

Fall PreventionFrom DRCS

Tammy CooperWhat is Fall Prevention?Excerpt from Fall Prevention

Center of Excellence:Falls are the number one cause

of injury, hospital visits due totrauma, and death from an injuryamong people age 65 and older. Itis estimated that one in threeolder adults falls each year. Fallsamong older adults is a seriousissue, but research has shown thatmany fall risks can be reduced.

There are many different factorsthat can increase the risk offalling. These include:

• Past Falls• Hazards in the home and

community• Problems walking• Balance problems• Weakness• Improper footwear• Chronic diseases• Multiple medications• Poor vision• Depression• Memory problems• Behaviors like rushingBecause there are many

different factors that contribute to

falls, there are differentrecommendations for reducingfall risks. These include:

Talking with a healthprofessional to identify and treatmedical problems that might leadto falls. This includes discussingany previous falls with the doctor, reviewing medications with adoctor or pharmacist, and gettingvision checked at least once a year.Getting Regular Physical Activity –making a plan to have regularphysical activity either in a class orat home. The most effective typesof activities to reduce fall riskimprove balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance. BeingAware of Safety Hazards in theHome and Community – thisincludes looking at the home toidentify fall hazards and makingchanges for safety, also calledhome modifications. It is alsoimportant not to rush and to beaware of fall risks when outside.

Welcome to BelmontVillage of Burbank,

Toastmasters4Writers!We have opened our home on

the 2nd and 4th Saturday of eachmonth to host this amazing group(which residents are more thanwelcome to join!) that is: “...a safeand welcoming place for peopleto come and experience profoundgrowth as communicators andleaders” and be cheered on andsupported "...as they overcome thefear of speaking in front of groupsand excel as presenters.”

Try Scattergories! How do you play? Each team

takes a card and writes downwords that fit the categoriesshown—a boy’s name, a carpart, something you’d find in akitchen, for example. Soundseasy, but the words have tobegin with the letter rolled onthe die. Race the clock, worktogether and be creative becauseyour team scores points onlywhen you come up with wordsno other team did!

Lucy and Bill teaming up in ourdebut of “Scattergories.”
