FROM THE DIRECTORS We are so grateful to have completed another cycle of working in this incredibly devoted, mission- driven group and organization. During 2018-19, we were proud to expand our substance use services for the LGBTQ+ communities and support for long-term survivors of HIV thanks to new funding from the City and County of San Francisco. Studies consistently show that LGBTQ+ people face greater mental health and substance use challenges. Is there a connection between those issues and the high levels of trauma exposure our clients report? Cause and effect is hard to determine, but the need for expanded substance use services is clear. We are also proud to help more HIV positive folks who lived through the AIDS epidemic to develop new social supports. Aging well is easier with a sense of community. Our staff gathered at the Fire House at Fort Mason for a retreat in November. We laughed while playing charades and found our strengths using Clifton Strength Finder tools. We remain so grateful to our staff for their ongoing dedication to helping our clients navigate their lives; they are stellar. Speaking of strengths, we were asked to adopt the main UCSF brand and after some reckoning with our rebel selves, we created a new logo with a rainbow bar that includes black and brown stripes. That design affirms our dedication to the struggles of LGBTQ+ people of color; including our courageous clients who often fight to overcome serious health disparities. Our brand challenge is maintaining our community- based queer identify while also celebrating our UCSF heritage. Each day our work reminds us that recovery is a non-linear, continuing journey. But we are honored to assist clients as they develop their strengths and transform their lives. We look forward to another year of courage, triumph, stumbling and getting back up again. - James Dilley, MD, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Lori Thoemmes, LMFT, Director 909 tests provided for gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis 5 positive hepatitis C test results 538 people living with HIV received outpatient mental health services 1,291 HIV tests administered 25 clients received gonorrhea or chlamydia treatment at AHP 150 people received PrEP navigation services 329 people living with HIV helped by case management and psychiatry services to engage in medical care and achieve viral suppression 6 positive HIV test results 414 hepatitis C tests administered 31 people started PrEP 259 people with serious mental illness or substance use received behavioral health services 756 hours of peer support groups facilitated by volunteers 18 participants took our hepatitis C online course 2,050 hours of services provided by clinical interns 47 trainings hosted in 18 counties in California 484 participants trained in California 4 trainings done nationally with a total of 59 participants LIVES CHANGED The UCSF Alliance Health Project supports the mental health and wellness of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) and HIV-affected communities in constructing healthy and meaningful lives. FROM THE DIRECTORS We are so grateful to have completed another cycle of working in this incredibly devoted, mission-driven group and organization. During 2018-19, we were proud to expand our substance use services for the LGBTQ+ communities and

support for long-term survivors of HIV thanks to new funding from the City and County of San Francisco.

We laughed while playing charades and found our

strengths using Clifton Strength Finder tools. We remain so grateful to our staff for their ongoing dedication to helping our clients navigate their lives; they are stellar.

Speaking of strengths, we were asked to adopt the main UCSF brand and after some reckoning with our rebel selves, we created a new logo with a rainbow bar

that includes black and brown stripes. That design affirms our dedication to the struggles of LGBTQ+ people of color; including our courageous clients who often fight to overcome serious health disparities. Our brand challenge is maintaining our community-based queer identify while also celebrating our UCSF heritage.

Each day our work reminds us that recovery is a non-linear, continuing journey. But we are honored to assist clients as they develop their strengths and transform their lives. We look forward to another year of courage, triumph, stumbling and getting back up again.

AHP SERVICES — SERVING THE LGBTQ AND HIV COMMUNITIES

ACCESSING SERVICESMost of AHP’s services, except for Sexual Health Services and drop-in support groups, require an intake appointment. For more info, contact us at 415-476-3902. Drop in Monday through Friday from 9 am to 11 am or by phone Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 11 am.

To get more information on all of our programs go to AHP’s homepage:

alliancehealthproject.ucsf.edu

MENTAL HEALTH & SUBSTANCE USEHelp People Help Themselves. Individual and group support, immediate intervention for people in crisis, and psychiatric assessment and medications management. Most mental health and support services are free; some have income or insurance status limits.

Meet Folks Where They Are. Harm reduction—individual substance use counseling, case management, and group support—creates a constructive and effective setting for addressing mental health and substance use concerns.

SEXUAL HEALTH SERVICESKnow Yourself, Know Your Status, Know Your Community. HIV and STD testing empowers people with information. Drop in five days a week at 1930 Market Street and twice a week on Castro Street at AHP’s mobile van. For appointments, go to “Make Your HIV Test Appointment” on AHP’s homepage, or call 415-502-TEST (8378) from 11 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday through Friday. AHP also provides clean syringes to people who inject drugs and runs one of the city’s PrEP navigation programs, helping people assess whether PrEP is right for them and, if so, access it.

SUPPORT GROUPS &WELLNESS WORKSHOPSConnect People Together. Support and therapy groups help people build community and address mental health and wellness topics together. Groups vary in the number of weeks they last and in their target audience. Some focus on specific populations or topics.

Feel Better Than Ever. AHP also uses the power of community to promote a world of well-being through workshops and forums on both LGBTQ and HIV-related topics.

TRAINING & RESEARCHBuild Knowledge and Capacity. AHP trains HIV test counselors, mental health and substance abuse professionals, and staff from agencies seeking to foster a well-informed, client-centered, culturally competent, stigma-free environment.

Discover While Serving. HIV and LGBTQ health care leads AHP staff to recognize gaps and develop ideas for filling them. AHP researches new approaches to HIV prevention and LGBTQ mental health.
