Culture of Life – Dennis Groulx and Ron Bourque. We delivered the second donated ultrasound to the pregnancy care center in Keene yesterday. (This is the third machine that our councilhas facilitated delivery.) The PCC was on shutdown, so the arrangements were a little complicated. I rode in the truck just in case something fell through the cracks, but everything went perfectly.

I want to thank Steve Ruel, District Deputy for the Keene area, for all his help. I also want to thank our brother knights, Jonathan Allard, Alan Gross, and Dennis Kelleher for coming to the center to help withthe unloading.

Christine Andrad, board member for the PCC, came by to let us in and show us where to put it. Craig Borin from Evolve Technologies drove the truck…

The attached picture shows the crew minus Craig and I. This donated ultrasound was delivered on August 9 to Winchester, NH, the newly opened satellite center for the Keene PCC.

Veteran’s Report – Enrico Casaletto. 7:46 Veteran events coming up in the near term...The POW/MIA vigil is Sept. 17 & 18. It is a 24 hour vigil, which starts at 11:00 AM on the 17th and ends on 11:00 AM on the 18th. Each group stands 15 minute watches. My wife Pat and I generally stand about four different watches. All are welcome to participate. Contact me for details.

The Woodbury breakfast is scheduled for Nov. 4.

There is also a presentation at the Kelly Library, on Nov.9 ( Voices of Salem's Veterans).

The dedication ceremony (AMVETS Flag raising and dedication of a monument to our departed comrades) will be held at 10:00 AM on Dec.5, at the Pine Grove Cemetery. All are invited to attend.

Bingo – Ron Bourque7:44PM On a track for great year, ahead of our budget projection! Thanks to Lou, Paul, Ken, andThanks be to God!

Texas Hold-em – Larry Belair7:47PM It's been a good run. Nearly 10 years and $532,646 later, the Texas Hold Em program has ended. That it was a timely lifesaver for the Council when Bingo revenues were dropping is indisputable. I am particularly grateful for the nearly 30 volunteers who, over the years, answered the call. No one was more dedicated than Al Hamel who, in all the years when we actually had to have workers present, only missed one event. My thanks to Al. I also want to thank Brother Lou Stella who in the early years, despite being very busy trying to right the Bingo ship, found time to co-chair the poker activity with me. In later years, it was Gene Bryant who alternated with me to

pick up the checks and get them to the Bank.

Our Council got to share our earnings with hundreds of people and needy causes. We got to do what Knights do best - we helped others. Today, Thanks to Lou, Paul and the dedicated Bingo teams, we continue that legacy. My hat is off to all of them for what they do.

Hopefully, we may be able to have poker again, should someone resurrect the program. Gene and I are working with prospective entrepreneurs and we'll keep everyone informed. For now, thanks to all for your help in making the Texas Hold Em program a huge success. (And “Thank you, Larry!” for leading the council in this fund raising effort! -ed)

Old Business:None

New Business:7:58PM Don Simmons and Tom Campbell, trustees, presented the following. The council voted and approved:$200 for Childhood Cancer Lifeline of NH, requested by Joe Stafford, from solicitation of Dane Hoover.$250 for We Care Charity program (name?) (Pleasant St. Methodist Church meals program)$100 for “Bridging the Horizons,” a social activity program in the Salem area for folks we help in the Tootsie Roll drive.$500 for Pathways Pregnancy Care Center of Littleton, NH. (This is the PCC that received our first ultrasound machine. The poor winter for skiing hurt their tourist economy and donations are low in that already impoverished region. We will probably add them to our yearly budget, at $500/quarter, for discussion and approval in 2017.)

Notices of Motion:Presented but not debated were two notices of motion dealing with donations over $500. The council will decide at the September meeting under “old business.”

Family Promise of NH: We have them already in our budget at $1,500 for October. They seek donations by August 15, for an upcoming gala and promotional media blitz, so that givers could be recognized in their program books and web sites. GK Paul proposed to advance the $1,500 to August, which was done. This check has been mailed to them.

Paul proposed a NOTICE of MOTION for $1,000 additional for Family Promise of NH, to be approved in September. This additional money will get the council to the top-level promotion point, the “Oscar Level Sponsorship.” If we give $2,500 total, (which this additional $1,000 will do) the council gets top billing, public acknowledgment and publicity, free food and table for 10, etc. (Paul will write a letter with our August donation, already budgeted, and say the remainder of the $2,500 will be coming in September, so we get credit for the top level contribution.) (The banquet is November 4 at the Atkinson Country Club.)

NH Right to Life:GK Paul presented a NOTICE OF MOTION for $1,500, to be voted upon in September meeting, for the NH Right to Life. They have a banquet October 6. I suggest our sponsorship at $1,500, the top “Gold Level” of support. Sept 19 deadline for donation and advertisement.

District Deputy Report – Bill Richards8:10 PM1) Brothers, I bring you greetings from our State Deputy Wayne Griffin and I would like to thank yourGrand Knight for allowing me to attend your meeting and make my presentation. 2) In opening we need to be congratulating our State Deputy Wayne Griffin as he was awarded the circle of honor at the Toronto convention.3) Membership recruiting is a major concern to our State Deputy this year as the summer doldrums has produced the usual slow recruiting period and our membership is down significantly this year. We are asked to step up membership recruiting this fall and council are being asked to have a recruiting drive between September and October and to review all terminations to determine if there is any way to maintain them as active members. District membership is down by 7 members as of August 1, 2016.

Cost is$60 a person.8) State Ball is scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2016 Our Lady of the Holy Rosary; 189 North Main Street; Rochester, NH. Cost is $25 per person of table of 8 at $200.00. We are encouraging the councils to purchase a table of at least 8. The deadline for tickets is September 30, 2016.9) At the Summer Quarterly meeting we were informed that there is to be a change in the handling of the current Kidney Fund. As the number of patients in the kidney dialysis program is shrinking and the kidney fund has reached a huge value and is increasing rapidly. The state is considering allowing for the inclusion of medications for kidney transplant patients but the bylaws for the kidney fund does not allow for the fund to be used in that manner. A new Fund is being created for the transplant patients known as the Kidney Transplant fund and it is to be administered by the K of C Council 5093 in Hampton, NH. From now until the end of the current fraternal year all donations ear marked for the kidneyfund will now be given to the Kidney Transplant Fund. They will be sent to Knights of Columbus Council 5093; C/O David Hagen; P.O. Box 2052; Hampton, NH 03843. This will remain in place until the current Kidney Fund by-laws can be amended at the state convention in 2017.10) The State Master for the 4th degree has agreed to perform a special exemplification for Fr. Al Hicks. The exact date and time is currently on hold as there have been scheduling complications with the council hall and also with the state master. Keep and eye out for a general email announcement soon.

Lecturer Report: Ron Bourque8:25PM Ron presented an email from Dr. Brian Sargent, the medical director donating his time to the Pregnancy Care Center in Barre, VT. He works in the emergency room at the local hospital, and supports the pregnancy care center on his days off. He came down to Salem a few weeks ago to check the machine out, them came back with a U-Haul to take it away on May 3. (This is the second ultrasound that our council facilitated delivery, it was the first that was donated. ed) Dr. Sargent's efforts are laudable! Here is what it takes to get an ultrasound program up-and-running...

From: Brian Sargent; Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2016 10:28 PM

In May, our Director, our RN and I traveled to Fredericksburg VA for a three day introductory course at the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates. It was a great course and answered most of our questions about how to set up theprogram. The president is Thomas Glessner JD who has prepared a set of SOPs that we are now reviewing and adapting to our center. Part of the course involved doing several scans on live (pregnant) clients so our nurse was able toget her first scans in.

Last month we went to an established Care Net Center in Lebanon and our nurse was able to do a few more scans.

I authorized a "checkup" dusting and cleaning of our machine which will be done by Trisonics (they service most of the machines in the area) . This month, on Saturday the 30th we will have an open house to show our machine. I asked Shannon to notify the local K of C of the date. We have a board meeting tomorrow so I can confirm that happened.

The rate limiting step right now is getting our RN some experience. It is not too difficult for an office practice to let a student so some supervised scans in a private OB office, but therein lies the problem. The second problem, is that most OB's in the area are not pro life. Very few OB's are in private practice anymore, they all work for a hospital. It is much harder to get into a hospital because of all the red tape that goes with setting foot in a hospital. We have found one OB that is willing to help but he is not presently available. (I believe he is on a mission trip). We have been over to the Care Net in Burlington, Vt but they do relatively few scans in the summer. It will pick up in September when the College Students return.

The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates recommends that our RN has 60 supervised scans before she can work on her own so we are working on it. NIFLA also recommends an online course for physicians which I will pursue. If our RN does not have the 60 Scans by September, I will have to set some time aside in my schedule to be present while she scans. (probably one day a week to start).

We are getting there, it is just slow starting from scratch without a certified sonographer. We will get there!

God Speed!

August Knight of the Month to Joseph StaffordThe August KOM recognition goes to Joe Stafford, for all the work to “vet” the scholarship applications (46 this year), deal with late applications and disgruntled grandfathers, while also putting together the family picnic and getting great entertainment, and be the “master of ceremonies.” The checks were all written out and ready to go at the drawing. Great preparation and teamwork with Charlie and Bob. Joe takes charge of the program, handles

all the details, recruits help, and gets the jobs done! And he graciously acknowledges all the help he gets! He is also the unofficial Worthy Photographer for our meetings.

Attendance Drawing 8:32PM The August drawing for $30 was won by James Rand, who was attending his first meeting in a long time! Anyone can win!Attend the Sept meeting; the prize is $10.

Closing Prayer and blessing was done by GK Paul. Amen!

Meeting adjourned at 8:33 PM.

Assembly News: Summer recess. Next meeting on September 21.

In the past months... and in future months...Knights – Masons Fellowship Dinner – Bill Richards

Bill met with several Masons recently over breakfast, and they thought it would be good to re-start our “annual” fellowship dinner. It will be Thursday, November 3, 2016 at their hall on Main St, Salem. The dinner is on them this year. The visiting organization usually makes a donation to the home organization's charity. We will have time at the next two meetings to cover all the details. (While Knights cannot be Masons, that doesn't mean we can't sit down to a meal together. If you could time travel, would you share a meal with Masons George Washington, Ben Franklin, W.C. Fields? Check out this web site for a list of famous Masons. - ed) 7

VETERANS Cook-Out – Rico Casaletto reportingOn Saturday, July 23, 2016, at 9:20 AM, five cars departed from the Knights of Columbus Hall, Council 4442, in Salem, NH. The cars were on their way to the New Hampshire Soldiers Home in Tilton, NH. Themembers of the Council were going to hold their first cook-out for the residents.( the round trip mileage was 125 miles). A sixth car also left from Lincoln, NH and a marine veteran, ridinga motorcycle left from Salem, NH. The total miles driven, including trips to different markets to arrange the food to be used, was 900 miles. There was a total of 12 volunteers, the total hours volunteered was80 hours.

The residents were treated to an "all you can eat cook-out.” The menu consisted of:

hamburgers and cheese burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, watermelon, cake, coffee, bottled water, and soda.

The cook-out began with the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer of thanks and the National Anthem (played by Sir Knight Donald Simmons) Many of the residents sang along.

The residents were happy to have some one to share their stories with. One resident said that he was at Pearl Harbor, on Dec. 7, 1941 andwas on the ship that fired the first shot. Another told how his outfitlanded in Italy and fought their way through Italy, France and intoGermany.

Throughout the meal the residents were entertained with music playedby Don Simmons (the residents asked if he would come back again).

Those that volunteered were: Sir Knight Enrico Casaletto and PatriciaCasaletto, Sir Knight Richard Collopy and Jeanne Collopy, Sir KnightChanel Simard, Sir Knight Donald Simmons, Sir Knight DavidThompson, Third Degree Knight Walter Coleman and Gail Coleman,American Legion Auxiliary Gloria Morin, American Legion Timothy McCarthy, Marine veteran Leo LeMay.

I wish to thank the members who volunteered to help, Council 4442 for sponsoring the even at a cost of $310, and the staff of the Soldiers Home for their help.

Family Picnic and Scholarship Drawing – Joe StaffordCouncil 4442's Family Day Picnic and Scholarship Drawing was held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 and attended by

approximately 110 members, family and friends. A threat of rain was prevalent throughout the day so we moved all activities inside the Council Hall, minus the cooking tent and grills, for a “cook-out, eat-in.” Cooking was performed both inside our kitchen and outside under the tents. Our Grand Knight, Paul St. Amand, blessed us with his presence and PGK & PDD Dick Collopy offered the opening prayer. The food lasted, with extra/leftovers to spare which was divided amongthe members.

The Magic Show/entertainment was performed by Magician EricConover who was well received by all (including Butch Kealey and his“Ben Franklin.”)

I want to thankAl Hamel onceagain who throughhis charmingdisposition, collected$255.00 for the50/50 drawing.

Linda Richards won the drawing. Repeatedly, this year we had an army ofvolunteers which says volumesfor our Council's commitmentto always come forth and helpout when needed. Thefollowing members wereinstrumental in setting up thetent, grills, table and chairs onSaturday, July 30, and cooking & preparation on Sunday July31st. Not in any particularorder:

Grand Knight Paul St. Amand, Dave Thompson, Don Simmons, Butch Kealey, Elaine Kealey, Gene Bryant, Chanel Simard, Kevin LaPierre, Bill Richards,

Dick Collopy, Mike Petrilli, Dennis Coleman, Al Hamel, Charlie Walsh, George Masciarelli, Bob Defeo, Mark Bunnell, and many positive thoughts and actions of others....

A BIG Thank you goes out to all!!

Odds and Ends photo department...

Coats for kids...Paul St AmandI will order early September. I need a place to “stage” the coats for marking and repacking, as I am selling my house and won't have the space. A two stall garage is used for about 4 days, along with two 8-foot tables for folding and sorting. Jim Broadhurst has volunteered hiscompany garage in Andover for our use... but that would be longer haul for us. Any other volunteer? (Do you have space and can you be“on-site” for day of delivery? We get a phone call the day before, telling me, “The truck will be there tomorrow, sometime after 7:00AM.” That's about as close as it gets to being precise. So there would needto be someone on site to accept the shipment. The coats come on two or three pallets, and the driver will put the pallets where you want them... as long as it is not up or down hill to your garage!)

Isaiah 58 New Hampshire – Gene BryantThe Rev. David E. Yasenka, President of Isaiah 58 project for housing, support services, and life skills training to homeless folks, has requested our support and attendance at the third annual charity benefit, to be held September 10 at the Atkinson Country Club. Hope some of the Knights will again be able to attend the event and support the work with the homeless and housing insecure. Tickets for the event are $50/pp. This year, the humanitarian community service award will be presented to Ed Callahan. Tickets can be purchased on-line at the Isaiah58 web site. You can also contact Gene, he may be gathering names to fill a table.

(Photo at last year's event for Isaiah 58. The council made a big impression. Rev. David had a hard time finding an ATM big enough to accept that check! -ed)

Mike and Butch make sure all is clean and sanitary.

Something about the meal doesn't agree with him. Dirty dishes, perhaps?
