Brokenness in the hands of God! King David cried out: “Oh, give me back my joy again; You have broken me—
now let me rejoice. (Psalm 51:8 NLT) As followers of Jesus Christ, brokenness
is a good thing! Strange as that may sound.
Here’s why: It’s impossible to become intimate with God unless we are broken
of our independence, broken of our pride, and broken of our insistence that our
way is better than God’s.
We must be broken of the illusion that we bring anything to the peace talks
when we seek to end our war with God; the only surrender God requires is
unconditional.
Brokenness is the last stop before we finally confess, “I can’t; God can.”
Brokenness is the apostle Paul confessing, “Oh, what a miserable person I
am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and
death?” (Romans 7:24).
Brokenness is the prodigal fighting with the pigs over food (Luke 15:11–
32).
Brokenness is Joseph, still in prison, “Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however,
forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.” (Genesis
40:23).
Brokenness is Jonah in the belly of a whale, confessing the consequences
of running from God: “I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.” (Jonah
1:12 NIV).
Brokenness is Peter weeping bitterly outside the trial of Jesus (Luke 22:62).
Brokenness is Jesus abandoning everything to God: “Father, if you are
willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will
to be done, not mine.” (Luke 22:42).
God breaks us so He can use us. We can smash our pride against the solid
rock of Jesus, confess our sins, and admit our need for him; or the stone can
fall on us, meaning God in His persistent, loving pursuit of us will break us of
our pride, sin, folly, and independence (Matthew 21:44).

Like Jesus serving bread at the Last Supper, God takes us, breaks us, blesses
us, and then uses us.
“Oh, give me back my joy again; You have broken me— now let me rejoice.

Is being a disciple of Jesus more about knowing the right information or living life in relationship with Jesus? I think we all know the answer to that question! Yet often times our classical approach to faith formation elevates the importance of learning information. What would happen if instead we elevated the role of guidance? This is the third article in a five-part series on increasing effectiveness in developing disciples by making small shifts in our behavior, based on Daniel Im's book No Silver Bullets: Five Small Shifts That Will Transform Your Ministry.
The third shift Im highlights in his book is to move from sage to guide. Recent scholarship in the field of adult education has confirmed that adults learn very differently than children. Im points out that 70% of what adults learn comes through doing while 20% is gained through interaction. Just 10% of adult learning can be attributed to classical education methods such as reading and listening. And why should it be any different when it comes to following Jesus?
Im reminds us that what is needed for faith formation is not a sage on the stage, but rather a guide on the side. Nothing is more important to the one learning how to faithfully follow Jesus than someone to walk beside him or her to show the way. And this is something that God is calling each of us to do for others. And not only is God calling us, he's equipping us, too! In Ephesians 4:11-12, Paul reminds us that God has so gifted the church with various leaders for the purpose of equipping the saints for the work of ministry.
In other words, you don't have to take a class to learn how to disciple someone... you are already called and equipped to do so. And I believe that as we go, God further equips us for even greater ministry. As we walk alongside someone to guide him or her, we realize our own need for someone to walk alongside us and guide us as well. So, while we are discipling others, we are being discipled, too. This was God's plan for the church.
And it was God's plan from the earliest days. In Acts 8, Philip joins the Ethiopian in the chariot who had been reading Isaiah. He asked the man, "Do you understand what you're reading?" The Ethiopian replied, "How can I unless someone guides me?" Let us never forget how God is calling us to disciple others by joining them in their journey of following Jesus as their guide on the side.

Preschool News Submitted by Preschool Director Sharon Stollewerk
Praise and glory to you, Father, as the 49th year of Faith Lutheran Preschool begins. God's blessings and Faith's wonderful, supportive congregation have made the last 48 years possible. Thank you!
We are fortunate to have a loving and dedicated staff again this year. We are delighted to have Diana Craver on board as the new Mother's Morning Out Teacher, and Avis Herrick, as the Mother's Morning Out Aide. Other staff are Three Day Preschool Teacher, Angela Beasley, Three Day Preschool Aide and Extended Care Aide, Georgie Dittrich, Director and Five Day Preschool Teacher, Sharon Stollewerk, Five Day Preschool Teacher and Extended Care Teacher, Paula Neuman, Extended Care Teacher and Five Day Preschool Aide, Della Sires, and Volunteer Nancy Estes. Two important new members of the "Faith Family" are Sandy Koepp, new Fulltime Two Year Old Class Teacher, and Terri Hartmann, new Fulltime Two Year Old Class Aide. Welcome!
The Five Day Classes' units included Back to School with Favorite Books, Colors in English and Spanish, Community Helpers, and Numbers. We enjoyed having Mr. Goetz, Dietz's daddy, come to school and talk to us about his job as a pilot. He showed us his special flight suit and helmet, and we all got to try it on! He also taught us the art of flying a plane. (for real!) We also enjoyed having Seguin Police Department officers visit the school and explain how much they help us. We liked peeking into their patrol cars. We learned to not be afraid and are glad that they are our friends. We especially enjoyed watching Cooper the police dog perform.
The Three Day Class has been learning the school routine and transitioning nicely. They made beautiful apple prints. They celebrated Teddy Bear Week and made a cute bear headband and had a special Tea Party with their teddy bears. They studied how God made the big, beautiful world during their unit on Creation. They planted a bean plant to show how God made the plants and used golf balls to paint a picture of the earth.
The Mother's Morning Out Class has been adjusting to being away from Mommy and Daddy. They are really starting to enjoy school, and they LOVE to play outside. They have participated in some fun activities such as Red Day, making a Family page, learning that Jesus is my Best Friend, and All About Me. We are very proud of them!
The new Fulltime Two Year Old Class is off to a great start in its first year t is full with twelve precious students. hey are also adjusting being away from Mommy and Daddy, but are learning that they always come back. There are tears, but fewer each week. They are studying the color "Yellow" by painting with yellow, and playing with yellow playdough, and also learning the shape "Circle." They studied how God made the beautiful world, and can happily sing the "Wheels on the Bus" song on demand!
Thank you to the wonderful Preschool Committee, Preschool Board, and the Property Management Committee for all the hard work put into preparing for our school year. We so appreciate it!
