Grace Episcopal Cathedral Topeka, Kansas
February 2018 Vol. 92, No. 2
Dear Friends,
We are ever so
close to the
completion of our
year-long building
project. Although
we got off to a late
start, due to the
inevitable “red tape” of getting
building permits and other okay-to-
go green lights from various city
departments, our construction
company looks to finish the project
on time, around the first part of
February. Our temporary occupancy
inspection is scheduled for January
22, and our walk-through inspection
with the builder is February 7. After
that, we can start moving in furniture
and setting up house, though official
events in the space will have to wait
until we have a permanent certificate
of occupancy, which we hope will
come soon after the above dates.
Financially, due to pledges
received, we have made it this far
without using a line of credit from the
bank. However, as of last month, we
have used all the funds in hand, and
this month’s bills as well as a final
invoice (which includes a ten percent
retainage fee for the total of the
project) will be due. That amount
totals just over $700,000, and that’s
what we’ll need to borrow from the
bank. Of course, there is an interest
payment that will be added to this
amount. Naturally, because we would
like to pay as little interest as
possible, we’ll be sending every
incoming pledge payment directly to

Adult Forum in February, 9:30-10:15 a.m. THE UPSIDE OF CHANGE: February 4 and 11
Change is an inevitable part of our lives, but who
likes it? Deacon Don Chubb will lead the Adult
Forum these two weeks as we discuss change in
our lives, our family’s lives, and the life of the church. Knowing how to
accept and handle change is crucial to our happiness and our well-being.
FASCISM AND THE CHURCH: February 18 — March 18
These classes, led by Scott Shipman, will be an exploration of the
interactions between fascist ideology and the Christian Church in Europe.
Parents Night Out! February 2, 6-9 p.m. The Cathedral will once again offer childcare for parents who would like an
evening to themselves. This opportunity will be available on the First
Fridays for the next several months. Dinner for children will be provided.
Please RSVP to the Cathedral office (235-3457) for the February date by
January 31 so we know how many children to plan for.
Daughters of the King February meeting The Grace Chapter of the Daughters of the King will meet at 9:30 a.m. on
Saturday, February 3, in the Bubb Room. This meeting will be the first
session in Daughters 101; a class of preparation for membership into the
Order and an opportunity for rededication to DOK members. All women of
the church are invited to attend to learn more about our Order and its
mission.

the bank to reduce the debt and
thereby reduce the interest owed.
If you have an outstanding
balance on your capital campaign
pledge and can pay it off early, this
would be most helpful in reducing
our overall debt. If you have paid off
your capital campaign pledge and
can do more now, this would be
helpful as well. In any case, our hope
is to be paid-in-full and celebrate a
“mortgage burning” ceremony by the
end of 2018.
Thank you all for your
participation in this “building up” of
Grace Cathedral. We are moving
toward the culmination of over a
decade of dreaming, studying,
planning, fundraising, collaborating,
and constructing a great new space
for our Cathedral and our diocese.
May it, and may we, be used in
service to God and God’s people,
giving thanks for all God’s gifts and
blessings!
—I’ll see you in church!

THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR
On the First Sunday
after The Epiphany, Paul
and David Fernkopf’s three
children, Harley (8),
Jonathan (7), and Antonio
(6), received the Sacrament
of Baptism before the
congregation at our 10:30
service.
The presence of the
Fernkopf family in our
Cathedral faith community
is another good example of
how important it is to
invite people to join us for
church. David was raised
in the Catholic faith and
Paul grew up in the
Mormon Church. They
were married in Sidney,
Iowa five years ago and
began looking for a church
that would be a good fit for
them personally and a
place for their family to
grow.
Shortly before Easter of last year, their friends (and Cathedral members),
Bo Turney and Lance Royer, invited them to Sunday services at Grace
Cathedral. David said they really liked the service, particularly the music, and
decided they might have found the church home they were looking for.
David is Principal of Overbrook Attendance Center, an elementary school
in Santa Fe Trail USD 434. He is a native Kansan, graduated from Jackson
Heights High School, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Washburn and
master’s degree from Baker University.
Paul is originally from Rock Springs, Wyoming. While serving in the U.S.
Army, he was assigned to Fort Riley, Kansas. He has attended Washburn
University and currently serves as a deputy sheriff and member of the National
Guard.

that begins in February. Those
participating commit to several
weeks of sessions designed to
develop skills in listening,
understanding crises, and learning
how to be a distinctively Christian
Stephen Minister.
Please be in prayer for Grace
members who have made this
commitment: Carolyn Jones, Ed
Larson, and TJay Wiechman. If
you, or someone you know, would
benefit from the support and care
of a Stephen Minister, please
contact Gwen McClain (506-6929)

As most of you know Mark, Kristie and
Hannah Ohlemeier left Topeka and Grace
Cathedral a little over three years ago for
Sewanee, Tennessee, so that Mark could
attend seminary at the University of the South.
Last June, after his studies were complete,
Mark was ordained at the Cathedral as a
transitional deacon and was called to serve at
Christ Church in Springfield Missouri.
On January13, Mark “transitioned” from
deacon to priest when he was ordained to that
order in Christ Church. Pastor George
Pejakovich preached at Mark’s ordination
service while Dean Steve Lipscomb and
Verger Kent Wingerson presented Mark to the
Bishop of West Missouri for his ordination to
the priesthood.
Mark, who until now was considered
resident in the Diocese of Kansas, is now
officially a resident in the Diocese of West
Missouri, and Kristie and Hannah have
become members of Christ Church,
Springfield.
Mark Ohlemeier ordained to the priesthood
Mark is vested by his parents, Janet and Bill Ohlemeier.
