Personal Booking at the Meeting on October 22 nd If you are unable to attend please contact Fran at: Email: [email protected] Telephone: 01297 691395 From the Chair Hello everyone, welcome to our Autumn newsletter. The Committee have agreed a draft Data Protection Policy and this should be finalised at the November meeting and sent out before the AGM. I hope you agree that we have kept it as simple and accessible as possible. Denis has slightly altered our membership form to reflect the new policy. The U3A requires us to have a Safeguarding Policy and the committee will be working on this in November. The policy will again state simply how we, as an organisation, take steps to make sure you are safe when taking part in U3A activities. It will be sent out with the Data Protection Policy before the AGM. Group Coordinator There is one other item and it is a message from our Group Co-coordinator. I do hope one of you can respond positively to it. He states: ‘In local U3As officers should only be in post for three years. Several of our officers have done more than this because others have not always come forward to take on these roles. A case in point is the group coordinator’s role. This office has been held by the same person for 6 years. This is not good for our U3A, change leads to fresh ideas and new vigour….Don’t be modest, everyone in Seaton U3A could take on the role and do it as well, if not better than, the present incumbent so volunteer now, talk to any member of the committee to start finding out about the role’. I fully endorse his comments, I am sure there is someone out there who could take on the role – it does not have to include being a committee member – so please contact us. Jean H. Dates for Your Diary

Monthly General Meetings

OCTOBER 29th

Dowsing by Charlie Palmer . Charlie has taught local history and map reading in adult education for about 20 years.

He says that he got into dowsing through attending workshops about 20 years ago and it was like someone opened a door. He

has taught dowsing workshops for the last 15 years and insists it is not all about water!

NOVEMBER 26th

Late Flowering Lyricist, is the story of a change in direction in life and of learning to seize the moment. Miranda

Pender overcame a life-threatening illness to re-invent herself as a singer/songwriter. She says the subjects of her songs/lyrics are

raunchy, romantic, heart-breaking and humorous.

DECEMBER

No Meeting

JANUARY 28th

The Festival of Britain by Matthew Denney . For some of us that will be a trip down memory lane and for our younger

friends will be an introduction to a double celebration. A hundred years since the Great Exhibition and a celebration of new

beginnings after the horrors of WW2.

GROUP NEWS

Play Reading Two Just a couple of more people to get it off the

ground. Interested - got a friend? See Below for details

THE BOOK GROUP The Book Group is now full again, but if enough members are interested it may be possible to start a second group. (Group Leader will be needed!) We continue to source our books from the Library, at a cost of £60 per year and have had a wide selection this year, from "The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock" by Imogen Hermes Gowar, (Excellent), to "Call the Midwife" by Jenny Worth, (much enjoyed), "The Sellout" by Paul Beatty, (too American!) and "How to Measure a Cow" by Margaret Forster. This was her last book and possibly just a Draft we felt. Our discussions are always lively and interesting - but not always about the Book!

Contact: Jill Watts [email protected] LITERATURE APPRECIATION Taking it in turns to read short passages from a wide range of books, from ‘classics’ to later novels of the twentieth century is a great way to remind ourselves of reading we have enjoyed in the past and to discover literature which we have never before encountered. The Group Leader’s introductions and the passages we read to one another open up bursts of discussion about the things that have stirred our ideas. New members are very welcome, if you love a wide range of reading, you will love this group EXPLORING LITERATURE We're now exploring the period from 1939 - The Present Day in our search for the Place of Women in Society. It has been a long ramble from Jane Austen where we started, but very interesting and I think our small group has enjoyed it, if the laughter throughout our sessions is anything to go by.If you love books, you'd be welcome to join us on the third Tuesday every month at 2.00 p.m. at my house. PLAY READING Since the play reading group is up to strength, Kate has agreed that she would be willing to start a second play reading group. A number of people have expressed an interest in this and so Kate is asking people who would like to be involved to contact her so that she can see possible numbers and begin the process of deciding a suitable day and time for meeting. The

idea of a play reading group is explained entirely by the title. Members gather and, taking parts, sight read a play. The types of plays vary enormously from classics of the theatre to light farces. Kate has created a very friendly way of sharing parts and allowing everyone to contribute and have fun. PLAY READING TWO The idea of a play reading group is to do exactly what the title says, to meet, to each take parts in the play and then to read the whole play through. Kate leads the group and she gets the play copies and organises the parts. This group offers a great opportunity to get to remember plays you saw in the past and to meet new plays. There are already 4 people interested but a couple more are needed if the group is to be really viable. You can contact Kate on 01297 24280 or if you prefer you can email me at [email protected] and I will pass on your message to Kate.

MUSIC APPRECIATION New members are always very welcome and if you wish to know more please speak to Denis Long. Our sessions last from 2.30- 4.30pm on the Third Thursday of the month and we listen to recordings on a

theme. Whilst the music is "classical" there is great variety as any of the existing members will tell you. The themes for the rest of this year are: October - Choral Classics November - Handel December - no meeting

CRAFT Our Craft Group is now well established. It is based on a simple idea, members each bring whatever craft they are currently engaged in and sitting and chatting together they enjoy their activities and one another’s company. here have also been opportunities for members to help one another try new skills. New members will be very welcome.

PHILOSOPHY

We have all been discovering one of the amazing things about Philosophy. Looking at a number of Ancient Greek philosophers and finding that, when you examine the questions they wanted to talk about, we are still needing to explore many of the same questions. Thus, we start with someone who lived more than 400 years before Christ and we are then finding ourselves having lively discussions about how we find truth, modern society, modern science and all manner of things still vital to our human understands and life today.

MOORLAND WALKING Our most recent walk was in May when six of us walked up to Haytor, on to Black Hill and then on to Hound

Tor.before walking back to the Haytor car park. En route we saw a medieval settlement near Hound Tor and walked along a disused tramway which was used to transport the granite from the Haytor Down mine to Stover Canal about 10 miles away. Unusually the tramway used shaped granite to form the track rather than metal rails. For further information about our next walk contact Mark Ingham on 07526 747712,

CRIBBAGE This group enjoys friendly games of crib. Depending on numbers we play partner crib or singles. After a couple of games we have a well-earned cup of tea before a final game. We usually meet on the fourth Monday of the month. For further information contact Mark Ingham on 07526 747712

PEOPLE IN HISTORY The People in History Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month and covers all periods of History, modern and ancient, British and overseas. We even find time to fit in a tea break. We have been going now for just over 3 years and have built up a loyal membership. However there is still room for more so if you would like to join us, then just contact me Sandy Caple via my number on the web page and we

can have a chat. You would be very welcome."

PLACING HISTORY July’s subject could not have been more suitable for the month, Denis led us on the History of Holidays. From saints’ days to 1970s packaged holidays. Fascinating and a fair bit of nostalgia. Before that we had looked at issues surrounding food supplies in the nineteenth century centred on the Corn Laws. Lots of social history and the story of politics that divided the nation and broke political parties. Thank goodness we do not have things like that happening now! We returned after our summer break, in September, to explore Westminster and North Wales – the early part of the reign of Edward I and the amazing castles he commissioned. November’s subject will be entitled, ‘Gothic’

PHOTOGRAPHY Hopefully, some of the group will be on the October U3A trip to Westonbirt Arboretum to capture the beautiful colour of autumn, so hopefully we can show the results at the next AGM. Derek Thompson

M.O.T.O (Members On Their Own)

Moto is a Group of, and for, Lady U3A Members who may be living on their own or have different interests to their husbands. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding December and August, at 10.30am in the Upstairs Meeting Room at The Gateway (Town Hall). Here over a coffee we chat, exchange ideas and plan our next outing or visit. Where possible we use the local bus services. During the past months we have enjoyed visits to local gardens and Garden Centres, enjoyed tastings at Lyme Regis Food Festival, lunch in the sun on the Quay at Exeter whilst listening to a Jazz Band and yes food does form the highlight....well it saves cooking!!!! We have also started a monthly Breakfast Club at a Seaton Hotel. In addition, we do try to avoid the awkward ‘sitting on one’s own’ at events by reserving a table at The Gateway when something appeals. Should this appeal to you do please get in touch, either at a monthly meeting or with me Carole Butler. [email protected] Carole Butler

Anyone is welcome and sometimes there’s a small prize for the winning team! Come and try us out.
