Since last week there has been a steady stream of student enrolments with numbers currently sitting around 625. There is no sign of this slowing up as we continue through the following weeks of Term 2. This week we paused to remember the many servicemen and women who have served our country here and overseas in military roles. Dalby State School hosted our annual ANZAC Service on Tuesday with many special guests invited to remember with us. Staff and students also participated in the Town Service and March on Wednesday. It was great to see as many staff and students in attendance to pay their respects. Lest we Forget. On Monday our Prep teaches along with members of the school Strategic Team worked closely with Susan Main from Edith Cowan University building knowledge and skills of the Letters and Sounds program that is currently running in our Prep classrooms. Susan also presented a parent session to parents and carers on Tuesday night that was attended by a number of parents. This week we also pause to remember the fire that caused extensive damage to our school this time last year. It is fantastic to see work is progressing at the front of the school and we look forward to watching the progress throughout the year as well as the finished building later in the year. This week staff reflected on the positives that have occurred since the fire. Some include a strong togetherness as a staff, resounding community support, the resilience of our students as well as the continuation of the school’s core business of teaching and learning. I would like to congratulate Emma Donaldson for making the Bunya Districts Netball as well as Jamaya Alexander and Emma Rasmussen for making Bunya Districts Touch. NAPLAN A reminder for Parents and Carers as well as students of year 3 and 5 students that NAPLAN will be occurring on May the 15th, 16th and 17th. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year. Below are this week’s Cool Tools. The overall focus this weekis the safe and respectful use of the Toilets. It is important thatstudents understand the routines of using the toilet and realisethey are not a place to play.

ATTENDANCE

A reminder that our attendance target remains at 94%. Beloware the attendance figures for each of our year levels for thepast week. Don’t forget ‘Missing School = Missing Out’.Dalby State School has an obligation to follow up onstudents who are absent from school. This is done by avariety of different methods such as text messages, phonecalls, letters or home visits.

As we start to move into the cooler months attendance alwaysdecreases mainly due to the higher amount of sickness and thatis understandable. As a school we do not expect children toattend school if they are sick however it is extra important thatattendance occurs on days when sickness isn’t a concern.

OPTIMINDS

It is that time of year again when we open nominations forOpti-MINDS!

The Opti-MINDS Challenge is a problem-solving event forparticipants. Dalby State School students from Years 2 – 6 cannominate themselves to be part of a team. The year before last,one of our teams went to State Finals in Brisbane!

Through participation, students develop enterprise, critical andcreative thinking skills, sustainable thinking, cooperativeproblem solving, time and budget management,communication skills and responsibility.

There are between 4 and 7 students to form a team and DSSparticipates in Division 1.

All teams must complete a Long Term and a SpontaneousChallenge. Teams are given 6 weeks to solve an open-endedChallenge in the areas of Science Engineering, LanguageLiterature or Social Sciences. The solution must be dramatisedand then presented to a panel of judges and an audience(including family and friends) on Opti-MINDS Day, Sunday the26th of August 2018.

Students nominating must be willing to participate in allpractices leading up to the day and attend the event. If studentspull out of Opti-MINDS it puts their team at risk of not being ableto participate.

Only team members may work on the Challenge solution andpresentation. It is vital that students receive absolutely NOassistance from teachers, parents, siblings, friends etc. Parentsand teachers may assist with encouragement and teaching askill the team requires (but not as a direct part of the Challengesolution)....

The Spontaneous Challenge is a timed event where teammembers respond as rapidly and creatively as possible to anunseen Challenge. Due to the confidential nature of this section,it will be performed before a panel of judges only.

Unlike many school events, Opti-MINDS looks beyondacademic achievement whilst encouraging the pursuit ofindividual excellence. To encourage creativity, teams mustpresent their Challenge solution using props, costumes andspecial effects. Imagine an earthquake proof towerdemonstrated by intergalactic warriors or a 2300 ADinvestigative reporter who must examine the truth of evidencepresented at the fictional trial of Albert Einstein, MargaretThatcher or Germaine Greer!

Reading to young children: A head start in life.

The literature on between reading to children anddevelopmental outcomes is quite extensive. The results all pointin the same direction: there is a strong association betweenreading to children and developmental outcomes.

The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a directcausal effect on their schooling outcomes regardless of theirfamily background and home environment.

NAPLAN – Years 3 and 5

• Reading to children at age 4-5 every day has asignificant positive effect on their reading skills andcognitive skills (i.e., language and literacy, numeracyand cognition) later in life.

• Reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s readingskills at age 4-5 as being six months older.

• Reading to them 6-7 days per week has the sameeffect as being almost 12 months older.

• Children read to more frequently at age 4-5 achievehigher scores on the National Assessment Program –Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for bothReading and Numeracy in Year 3 (age 8 to 9).

• These differences in reading and cognitive skills arenot related to the child’s family background or homeenvironment but are the direct result of howfrequently they have been read to prior to startingschool.

School Crossing Supervisors – YellowRibbon Road Safety Week

School Crossing Supervisors play a vital role in keeping ourchildren safe. They improve the safety of travel to and fromschool for students in the city as well as regional and remoteareas, whether they walk, cycle or travel by bus or car.

Transport and Main Roads Road Safety Managers across thestate have said School Crossing Supervisors had providedinvaluable service to the school over the past 34 years and hadbecome an important part of the local school community.

In hot, cold or wet weather, the supervisors are there, ensuringchildren are kept out of harm’s way.

“Supervised crossings are an important part of Transport andMain Roads’ road safety program. I cannot stress enough theimportance of a school crossing supervisor’s role,”
