AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal From the Principal From the Principal From the Principal Year 6 Camp - The Year 6 children enjoyed a wonderful end of year School Camp to Kalgoorlie last week. After travelling there on the Prospector, they were able to visit and learn about many of the attractions that Kalgoorlie, Boulder and Coolgardie have to offer including – the KCMG Superpit, museums, historical homes, the Flying Doctor base, gold panning and Council Chambers. These activities showcased the history and geography of this mining town and provided the children with a wonderful insight into its development. Congratulations also to our Year 6s for their excellent behaviour and conduct whilst away as many members of the public acknowledged. The organisation of a camp of this nature takes many months of planning and many thanks must be extended to the amazing staff who gave up their own personal and family time to conduct this camp – Mr Sherlock, Mrs Lowther, Mr Sanderson, Mr Meachem, Miss Preston and Miss McKercher. Deputy Principal’s CornerDeputy Principal’s CornerDeputy Principal’s CornerDeputy Principal’s Corner Road Safety Education Throughout the year, Wattle Grove Primary School has been working with School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) as part of our whole school Health focus on Road Safety. This commitment will continue into 2019 with our Changing Health Acting Together (CHAT) partnership. This program involves parents, staff, students and the wider community working together to educate and support the wellbeing of our students and their families. Recently, a number of road safety issues have been reported to the school. This involves incidents relating to parking, children crossing the road and speeding vehicles in school zones. Please ensure that you adhere to road rules when dropping off and picking up your children from school. These are particularly busy times on the roads around our school and we are asking everyone to take a little extra time to think about their road safety behaviour. Many students arrive to school on bikes and scooters and it is important that they follow road rules to ensure their safety. Please ensure that you are reinforcing these

important messages to your children about their own road safety behavior. A few simple reminders: When crossing the road it is important to adhere to the following: 1. Stop – back from the kerb or road. 2. Look – in all directions (left, right, front and back) for approaching traffic. 3. Listen – in all directions for sounds of approaching traffic. 4. Think – is it safe to cross? Tell your child to keep listening and looking for traffic as you cross the road. When driving and parking around our school. • Adhere to School Zone speed restrictions.

• Park in designated areas.

• Take care when reversing. • Never stop in the middle of the street to collect

your child. This creates another traffic hazard for other drivers and pedestrians.

Further information regarding road safety can be found at https://www.sdera.wa.edu.au/parents/road-safety/ Kelly Peake Deputy Principal

Senior Assembly Rm 12 & 18Senior Assembly Rm 12 & 18Senior Assembly Rm 12 & 18Senior Assembly Rm 12 & 18 Remembrance Day - What does it mean for you? We all may have a different connection with Remembrance Day. Some may think of a family member who has fought in a war. Some may reflect on a friend or family member who is currently serving in the armed forces. Some may think about 'Hope.' The Year 5 children from Rooms 12 and 18 delivered an assembly item to commemorate the 100th year since the Armistice was signed at 11 o'clock on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year. The Armistice signalled the end of World War I and peace returned to the world. It was a privilege to deliver an item with so much significance to many. The poetic words of John McCrae's song 'In Flanders Fields' flooded the assembly and tied in well with our theme of the assembly, the poppy. We also ran a Poppy Appeal to raise money for RSL WA. Thank you

to all of the people who donated to such a worthy cause. The children looked incredible in their costumes of red and black. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with the attire of the day. A special 'thank you' to Mrs Stanley for her help with the lovely 'Field of Poppies.' Most of all, thank you to the children as you delivered such an inspiring and engaging assembly. We were so impressed with your delivery and the dedication you showed in the lead up to the 'Big Day.' Well done. Jonathan Petch and Fay Agathangelou Class Teachers

Kalgoorlie Camp Year 6Kalgoorlie Camp Year 6Kalgoorlie Camp Year 6Kalgoorlie Camp Year 6 The eagerly anticipated Year 6 Camp in Kalgoorlie took place in Week 4. An afternoon start was different to previous years and meant we arrived late in the evening of the first day. We hit the ground running the next day with a visit to Boulder Town Hall to learn some history of the area. The students were fascinated by the Philip Goatcher stage curtain depicting a scene in Italy. The highlight of our first day was the trip to the Super Pit. This huge hole in the ground produces large amounts of gold and it was fascinating to see the scale of the operations. Wednesday was a popular day with a trip to Coolgardie to find out more about the history of the WA Goldfields and a chance for prospecting at Lake

Douglas. Most students managed to find a speck of gold which definitely ignited the ‘gold bug’. On Thursday, we visited the Kalgoorlie Town Hall, the museum, RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service) and Hannans North. The students loved the hunt that took them around a replica of life in the goldfields in the early days. I think many have changed their minds about how hard life was for the pioneers. Our last day ended in a traditional game of ‘Two Up’ and then the long ride home. Students really engaged with all the activities and certainly got to know their peers better over the week. The weather was kind, not too hot, we all ate really well and had a great time. Joy Lowther Teacher

DanielDanielDanielDaniel I first came to Wattle Grove Primary School in 2015 when I was a Year 3. My family tree is from Dandong, where the border of North Korea and China is. I have one younger brother called Calvin and my Mum and Dad. I have participated in a taekwondo club in Maddington ever since 2014, I am currently a Black belt!. I enjoy coming to Wattle Grove every day to see the new things that we learn, I particularly enjoy: • The fact that all teachers are supportive and try their best to lead their students. • Teachers give everyone a chance and don’t choose favourites. During my time as a Student Representative I would like to help the school become School Of The Year again, by volunteering myself in the sports shed and participating in lots of other fundraisers or events. I have some ideas everyone would enjoy and love in the school. I would also like to organise games for younger students to participate, such as a Snap game club (that is student voted ) that could be organised during recess and lunch.

JalenJalenJalenJalen Hi, I am Jalen. I am eleven years old and in Room 11. I have attended Wattle Grove Primary School for seven years and this is my eighth year here. My Dad came from Belgium when he was 14 with his family. I have one sister. I have done gymnastics for three years and won the Coaches Award which is a trophy. I have played piano for two years and tennis for three years. I love Wattle Grove Primary School because we have high standards and the staff are friendly. I have made good friends, the school is nice and clean, the work is challenging, we have fun events, we have a canteen and we raise money to donate to charities. As a Student Representative, I hope to develop my own leadership skills and improve my public speaking. I want to help to develop fundraising ideas, organise younger students in their lines and be a positive role model to younger students.

MerrickMerrickMerrickMerrick My name is Merrick and I am In Room 11. I have been in Wattle Grove since Year 1. Our family (including me) was originally from the Philippines and I moved to Australia when I was five. I have one brother whose name is Thomas (TJ for short). My hobbies are mixed, I like to do lots of things like solving Rubiks cubes and playing on the computer. I go to church every week. What I really like about Wattle Grove Primary School is: • Challenging work: Challenging work is what makes Wattle Grove stand out. It is

challenging, but it is very fun. • There are loads of white boards including electronic white boards! There are over 30

or more computers and loads of IPads. Technology has come a long way. During my time as a Student Representative I would like to help the school by doing fund raising to help fix the computers and gadgets in school. I have millions of ideas that I think will benefit the school and will be helpful. I would also give up my lunch time for younger children in this nice, beloved school.
