Crowdfund pleaser NOVELTEA, the alcoholic tea brand launched by Newcastle University Business School graduates Vincent Efferoth and Lukas Passia, is going global.
Shortly after the co-founders turned down an investment offer on the BBC TV series Dragons’ Den, their crowdfunding bid raised over £340,000.
Vincent said: ‘The money is being used for marketing and internationalisation of our brand, as well as working capital.
‘Right from the start, we said we wanted to produce a new alcohol product category and a premium international brand – and that’s still our goal.’
Already selling in the UK, China and Germany, NOVELTEA is now looking to markets in the USA, Singapore, Australia and Europe, to export its distinctive cold-brewed teas infused with matching spirits.
Vincent and Lukas set up NOVELTEA with support from the University’s START UP Founderships programme – an initiative that mentors graduate entrepreneurs, providing six months’ financial support to cover living costs, together with office space in the University’s Careers Service and access to grant funding for development costs.
Lukas said: ‘Our mentors at Newcastle guided us through many aspects of the start-up stage – from research and development, to advising us on supply, manufacturing and strategy.
‘We have been introduced to some very influential connections and this support has been instrumental in getting the brand to where it is today.’
Nearly two years on, the duo are still in touch with their University mentors and have taken on a Newcastle graduate as part of the team. They also work with up to six interns a year drawn from the University.
NOVELTEA has increased its product base to three blends – combining Earl Grey tea with gin, Moroccan green mint tea with rum and Chinese tea with Scotch whisky. There are also plans to bring out a gift range.
Now, the brand is stocked locally by department store Fenwick Newcastle, UK retail outlets including John Lewis, leading UK hotels and artisan food and drinks suppliers, as well as being available through online supermarket Ocado.
And it’s been picking up accolades – from a star rating from The Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards, to being named ‘a must-have gift’ for foodies in 2018 by the global food media brand BBC Good Food.
Vincent said: ‘From the beginning we were inspired to create something ourselves; to create something different. It is hard work, but it is rewarding.'

On Norway’s remote Svalbard archipelago, 650 miles from the North Pole, a team of eight Geography students from Newcastle researched the effects of global warming in the Arctic.
The students, whose project won a prestigious Arctic Club Award for innovative and adventurous expeditions by young people, were collecting the data they needed for their final-year dissertations.
Expedition leader, Holly, said: ‘The Arctic is experiencing the effects of global climate change at roughly three times the rate of the rest of the world, which made it the perfect place for research, and meant we could see real change in the glaciers while we were collecting our results.
‘Our research has increased the knowledge of how glaciers are responding to a warming climate in the High Arctic – we were able to show that the rate of response is increasing, and there is a significant positive correlation to increasing air temperatures with glacial melt within the summer season.’
She added: ‘Ice cap melt poses a huge threat to the world’s population, particularly in places like Amsterdam and Hawaii which have low or negative sea levels. Huge volumes of melt water
stored in glaciers means these settlements could be at risk of significant flooding in 100–200 years' time.
‘More research is needed, but our findings will feed into that future research.’
The team had to raise over £10,000 to fund the expedition* and during the project were based at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), the world's northernmost institution for higher education and research.
Divided into two teams focusing on water and land processes, they had a 45-minute trek every day across glacial streams, ice and scree, to reach Svalbard’s Longyearbyen glacier. Once there, they carried out their experiments using a variety of field techniques, including mapping and water chemistry analysis.
Holly said: ‘Each member of the team completed their own research, ranging from assessing the amount of sediment present in meltwater across the summer season, to how much ice is being lost from the glacier during peak melt.
‘The whole experience was phenomenal; in fact, it’s inspired an interest in the world’s response to climate change that has led myself and three other team members to pursue study at postgraduate level at Newcastle.’
' Our research has increased the knowledge of how glaciers are responding to a warming climate.’

When Newcastle University struck gold in the national Teaching Excellence Framework it came as no surprise to students.
Every year they vote in their hundreds for their most inspirational teachers and support staff who are then honoured at the University's own celebration of excellence – The Education Awards.
Chemical Engineering with Industry student, Deema, successfully nominated Newcastle's Dr Kamelia Boodhoo for the Outstanding Contribution to Student Employability award, in recognition of the way in which she supports students on placement.
After completing a paid placement year with engineering business Cummins UK to develop her practical skills in an industry environment, Deema carried out a research project with the company during the fourth year of her degree.
'The project was investigating biofuel combustion as opposed to natural gas and its effects in lowering harmful engine emmissions,' Deema explained.
‘I contacted Dr Boodhoo for advice and she got in touch with Prof Nilanjan Chakraborty at Newcastle. He’s a leading expert on internal combustion and was able to bring his expertise to the project.’
Deema added: ‘Throughout my placement year Dr Boodhoo was so supportive. She’s the programme director for my course and it was a great opportunity to work more closely with her.
‘She visited me during my placement; she visited all placement students. We were all feeling the same – unsure about how we were going to manage working on a full-time basis as well as writing our dissertations.
‘She was very encouraging and we talked about issues and concerns more like colleagues than lecturer and student.
‘Without Dr Boodhoo’s support my placement year would have been a lot more difficult.’
Organised by the Students’ Union, The Education Awards include categories for teaching, pastoral care, employability support, equal opportunities, research and supervision.
Deema said: ‘The awards are a crucial part of influencing teaching quality at Newcastle. They're a chance for the University to view teaching from the students’ perspective, and they are veryimportant in terms of recognising great teaching ability and techniques.
‘The results were announced during an awards ceremony which we attended together. When Dr Boodhoo won it was one of the highlights of my degree course.’
‘ The awards are very important in terms of recognising great teaching.’

Indonesian culture and cuisine are the main ingredients in a start-up catering company launched by two friends and fellow Newcastle graduates.
Architecture graduate, Monica, and Combined Honours graduate, Kezia, joined forces to set up Waroeng Indonesia – meaning a small restaurant that brings people together from all parts of society.
Monica said: ‘Indonesian food is seen as a communal affair and Waroeng is a place where people can share good food and socialise.
‘We wanted to create a business that puts good food at its heart; food that brings a community together.’
The friends, who both come from Jakarta, had already worked on a successful social enterprise raising money for disadvantaged children in Indonesia.
During the final year of their degrees, and wanting to set up their own business, they approached START UP, the University’s Careers Service support for students and recent graduates hoping to run their own companies.
As part of her studies, Kezia completed a paid work placement with the University’s marketing department to develop her skills in market research, event planning, and digital and social media communication – skills needed for their fledgling business venture. On graduation, with help from the Careers
team, they secured Graduate Entrepreneur visas to stay in the UK and successfully pitched their idea for Waroeng Indonesia to UNLtd, an organisation that funds social entrepreneurs.
Kezia said: ‘I volunteer with NEST, the Newcastle Students’ Union initiative to support and provide educational opportunities for refugees in the North East, so the initial idea was for us to host social dinners for this community.
‘Since then, we’ve staged pop-up events at Kommunity, a Newcastle charity that promotes art and culture for all and cooked for over 1,000 people during a month’s residency at By the River Brew Co., an independent business community based under Newcastle’s Tyne Bridge.
‘We've also secured deals with corporate and private clients.’
From initially working out of their own kitchens preparing the delicious stews, curries, noodles and delicate pastries typical of Indonesian cuisine, the duo soon progressed to renting commercial premises and are now looking to expand again.
Kezia said: ‘We have a real sense of pride in our culture and although Indonesian food isn’t as popular as Korean or Japanese food, we’re hoping more people will start to enjoy it. Now, we’re looking at getting more clients and scaling up the business.’
‘ We wanted to create a business that puts good food at its heart.’Success

Barcelona was the dream destination for Law student, Josh, when he applied to spend a year studying abroad.
Now he’s broadening his knowledge of EU and international law at Pompeu Fabra University in the historic Spanish city as part of his four-year degree.
He said: ‘It’s really exciting to learn the law of a different country and both Newcastle and Pompeu Fabra universities offer the flexibility to study a range of subjects. You can choose your modules, so I’m also studying some politics and criminology modules.
‘During my time in Barcelona, I’ve been meeting people from all around the world. So, not only am I learning about Spain's culture, I'm also learning about the cultures of the friends I'm making from other countries.
‘Spanish culture is so different from the UK’s and it has been so much fun learning about it and enjoying it.’
Although Josh will spend a full academic year in Barcelona, study abroad opportunities offered by other degrees, as either optional or compulsory modules, can vary in length.
He said: ‘Although the opportunity to study abroad may seem scary at first, it offers many invaluable things which people don't realise. The local traditions and language are only a small snapshot of the things you learn throughout your time in the country.
'Many courses are taught in English and the skills you develop on your year abroad will stay with you for a lifetime.
‘The study abroad programme also looks amazing on your CV to future employers. Not everyone can say they’ve lived independently in another country, adapting to the many differences while studying and performing well in their degree.
‘Studying abroad truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once you start working life, you won’t get many opportunities like it again!’
Josh added: ‘I’m a regular person from a normal background and through hard work and determination I got into the university of my choice – and I’m really enjoying it.
‘My time at university has been filled with opportunities; you honestly won’t regret choosing Newcastle.’
‘ Studying abroad truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.’

‘Living away from home adds a whole new dimension to going to university,’ said Daniel, who is enjoying his new-found independence at Newcastle.
‘In fact, moving into halls is one of the best things I’ve ever done – and it’s the best way to make new friends and lasting friendships.’
Daniel, who is studying Politics and Sociology, is sharing a six-bedroom flat in University accommodation at Windsor Terrace.
He said: ‘The mix of three boys and three girls in our flat is great, it helps with the dynamic and it’s actually easier to make friends with other students because we are this diverse group.
‘In my flat there’s someone from Wales, a student from Ireland and another from South Africa, so it’s interesting hearing about where people are from, sharing stories, cooking and housekeeping.’
Daniel was able to choose from catered and self-catered accommodation offering both en suite rooms and bedrooms with washbasin facilities. After meeting certain criteria as a first-year student, he was guaranteed a place in University accommodation close to the city and campus.
He said: ‘I knew I didn’t want to be too far from campus and I thought this location was perfect. Windsor Terrace is on campus, just five minutes’ walk from Northumberland Street for shopping and close to the Grainger Market for fresh food.
‘My accommodation is on the cheaper side compared to some, so I wasn’t expecting it to be so modern, but everything is really well kept – the kitchen is nicer than mine at home!’
He added: ‘Although I was excited about going to university, meeting new people and doing new things, closer to the time of moving in I started to think “what if I don’t make any friends?” But by the end of the first week everyone in the flat was getting to know each other and feel comfortable with one another.
‘Now, we’re all saying it will be sad to move out at the end of first year; we don’t really want to leave.’
Daniel has arranged to live with three of his flatmates again next year, and said: ‘You see your flatmates every day; they are the first people you meet when you start university, so the friendships you make are solid.’
‘ Moving into halls is the best way to make new friends.’

Teaming up with Newcastle University allowed elite netball athlete, Farah, to combine playing at national level with studying for her Medicine degree.
Farah said: ‘I had offers from both Leeds and Newcastle, but coming here meant I could continue training with a team in the Vitality Netball Superleague.
‘I’d also heard about Newcastle’s sports scholarship programme for promising athletes so I applied and that gave me access to a great package of funding for match travel, as well as professional coaching from the University, sports kit and gym membership.’
Farah’s love of netball started when she was at school. She joined a local club that she still plays for today and, after success at first county and then regional trials, was invited to join a team in the Superleague – the UK’s elite netball competition featuring 12 squads from England, Scotland and Wales.
Once at Newcastle, where netball forms part of the Team Newcastle Performance Club initiative, Farah joined a programme of advanced court and skills training, dedicated strength and conditioning sessions, and match play.
She became president of the netball club and competed in both the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) league and the North East regional leagues.
She said: ‘Playing sport at that level is very time consuming; you do have to balance things and you’ve got to be disciplined in what you’re doing. But I love netball; I love it from an exercise point of view, but also because it is a great team sport.’
However, in her third year, Farah collapsed from a suspected autoimmune illness that left her in a wheelchair.
With support from the University she put her degree on hold while she recuperated, but after just six months, and desperate to get back on a netball court again, she enrolled on a coaching course.
Now, with financial and practical support from the Student Health and Wellbeing Service and the University’s Sports Centre, she’s returned to her studies, is employed by the University as a netball coach and is getting back to full fitness – she completed Newcastle's Great North Run in September.
She said: ‘Coaching some of the University teams has let me be part of that world again. I was itching to get back because I couldn’t play, so coaching was the next best thing; it’s allowed me to feel part of a team again.’
‘ Coaching allowed me to feel part of a team again.'

Opportunity knocks forstudents
English Language student, Sam, doesn’t like heights, but when he got the chance to climb the city’s 130ft Grey’s Monument for a spectacular bird’s eye view of Newcastle, he was happy to give it a go.
Sam is employed as one of the activities assistants for the University's Give It A Go (GIAG) events programme, while he studies for his degree. The initiative is run by the Students’ Union which works to represent students, offering opportunities to get involved, make friends and enjoy the University experience.
Sam said: ‘The Students’ Union, and the services it provides, is such a great resource; it really enriches Newcastle’s student offer. You can join a society, volunteer, or take part in GIAG – it’s easy to get involved.
‘GIAG is specifically aimed at enabling students to try activities and sports they may never have tried before, or get the chance to do again.
‘It’s also a way of meeting people and making friends and that combination is what university is all about. You come here to learn, to master new skills, and you leave with amazing memories, having made friends for life.’
Sam first heard about GIAG before he came to the University. He said: ‘I followed Newcastle’s PARTNERS
Programme supported entry route which includes a Summer School where you get a chance to take part in lectures and seminars and find out about university life.
‘I found out about GIAG and one of the things that really appealed to me was that all the activities are either free or subsidised – so you have all these amazing opportunities to go kayaking or gorge walking, for example, that students can actually afford to do.’
Activities range from surfing to adult soft play sessions, cocktail making classes and restaurant nights. Trips to London and Disneyland Paris are also part of the programme, and all activities are advertised on the GIAG’s website and Facebook page, making it easy for students to sign up.
Sam said: ‘I’ve done some brilliant things while working here and met students from all countries, cultures and walks of life.
‘Some sign up for activities with friends or flatmates, others come along on their own. My job is to make sure all students – particularly those on their own – feel comfortable, have fun and a great time.
'Making friends at university can be a worry for some new students, but at our events you actually see new friendships developing.’

Master of Planning student, Amy, lost her heart to Newcastle the minute she set foot on campus.
‘The first time I visited Newcastle was for an Open Day and I just fell in love! So much so, that I turned down my other offers and decided if I couldn’t go to Newcastle, I wouldn’t go to university at all,’ she said.
‘Everyone is so friendly, the campus is beautiful, all the accommodation is close by and the city centre is on your doorstep. Newcastle really is the perfect student city!’
As soon as she arrived here, Amy set out to explore the city with one of her flatmates.
She said: ‘I couldn’t wait; I was so excited. At first the city felt as if it was huge, but because the campus is in the city centre we soon found everything we needed. It struck me then what a really great place this is for students.
‘The way Newcastle is laid out is so convenient; you don’t have to get on a bus – everything you need is close by and accessible.
'My favourite place is the Quayside which is a great place to socialise, but also if you just want to go for a run by the River Tyne.
‘I also love the campus. The buildings are stunning and there are lots of places where you can arrange to meet friends and have your lunch sitting out on the grass on a sunny day.’
Now in the third year of her degree, Newcastle has also become Amy’s classroom as she is basing her dissertation on one of its most architecturally beautiful streets – Grey Street.
‘The architecture along Grey Street is amazing and there are some great restaurants, shops and bars there,’ she said.
‘My degree has a town planning focus, so I’m looking at wheelchair accessibility in this area and how people can access all these facilities.
‘After my degree I’d like to think that I could live here permanently, because there really is something for everyone in Newcastle. I’d like to make my forever home here.’

‘Newcastle is a great option for international students,’ said Harsh, who has travelled half-way round the globe to study here.
Although moving to Newcastle was the first time the Business Management student had been away from his home in India, Harsh was keen to study at a prestigious university in the UK.
A talented student, he’d been offered scholarships to a number of UK institutions, but decided to accept the Great India Scholarship, sponsored by Newcastle University and the British Council India.
‘My main reason for coming to Newcastle was the emphasis that’s put on an applied approach to teaching here, which is so much better than in my country,’ Harsh said.
‘I come from a business-focused family and knew from an early age I would be going into the family business – it was already a field of interest.
'I chose to do a BA in Business Management, which encompasses marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, and human resources. My degree is very flexible with very good module options.'
Harsh’s decision to study at Newcastle was fully supported by his family. He said: ‘My dad was really positive about it;
he said I would be able to build a good network of friends and contacts.
‘And my cousins, who have also graduated from UK universities, were very encouraging. They said that while choosing a respected university is important, it’s not just about that – the town or city where you are going to live matters, too; it's all part of the experience.
‘For me, Newcastle is the most student-friendly city with great nightlife and restaurants.’
Harsh added: ‘After the first week I was a little homesick, but I spoke to the University's Student Services and they said it was completely natural; that I should get involved in events and that would distract me. That support really helped and that’s what I did.
‘During Freshers’ Week I made a lot of friends that I’m still in touch with. I got involved in so many activities; it was a great way to meet people.
'Newcastle's student society system is also excellent. I was interested in the investment and entrepreneur societies and they host very good networking events.
