Lately, and perhaps usu- ally, we are in the center of a twirl- ing, swirling tempest of activity. So much of our livelihood is based on personal accountability that we exist in a state of hard work rather than ennui. We are active and adaptable. But the external storm is larger than usual. It has poured into locales close to the Market as well as those far and reaching. At times like these, I often lean on the connectivity of the Market membership to buoy me against the swells of unconstructive thought that can permeate our intentional marketplace. But I am seeing some leaks into our community. Some of the energy is seeping into our village of boutiques and cafes and is caus- ing unrest and discomfort within. Some of us are hurting while at the same time hurling insults. I ask you all to breathe deep, drink water, and look at the foundation we have for you here to spend seven hours ele- vating beauty and artistry over rude- ness and condemnation. Let us be a safe haven for vendor and customer alike. So if you choose to come and spend the day with us, know that you are expected to display kindness over contempt, love over fear. MARKETPLACE • COMMUNITY • CELEBRATION

From BethIt is a rare thing that I am taken

with such gravity as I write my week-ly letter. Lately, and perhaps usu-ally, we are in the center of a twirl-ing, swirling tempest of activity.

Some of the energy is seeping into our village of boutiques and cafes and is caus-ing unrest and discomfort within. Some of us are hurting while at the same time hurling insults. I ask you all to breathe deep, drink water, and look at the foundation we have for you here to spend seven hours ele-vating beauty and artistry over rude-ness and condemnation. Let us be a safe haven for vendor and customer alike.

So if you choose to come and spend the day with us, know that you are expected to display kindness over contempt, love over fear.

Have a lovely Saturday. ~Beth

Committee CornerThe Board of Directors met this

week. They heard a report on sales income and had a heartfelt discus-sion about how to alleviate the ef-fect of the city fencing off the lawns, recent newspaper articles as well as home and televised football games. They asked staff to increase advertis-ing on both radio and television and this will occur as soon as possible. They planned for the annual meet-ing.

The Holiday Market committee also met this week. They worked on details related to the art bag proj-ect for opening weekend. They also worked on details related to give-

aways all through the weeks to en-courage attendance at the Holiday Market. They reviewed the entire advertising budget and will expand advertising in Corvallis and South Eugene, along with continuing the advertising that’s been done in re-cent years.

Art Bag UpdateMany thanks to the forty-six

Marketeers that have signed up to make Art Bags. The blank bags are now ready to be picked up either at the information booth today or at the office. A handy instruction sheet is included. We’re excited to see what you create!

Committee chairs will present an overview of each com-mittee and how it is run and the responsibilities it takes on. Beth will make the State of the Market address which will include up to date Mar-ket trends and income. All members are welcomed and encouraged to at-tend.

Smoke Free MarketplaceAt their meeting last week, the

Tip of the Week: Leave the Book at Home

There are slow, boring times in a Market day. It’s tempting to sink into a chair in the corner, and into that good book you’re reading, or the crossword puzzle, or your cur-rent text conversation. The prob-lem is, when a customer finally does show up, they are probably reluctant to disturb you, even if you do look up and smile at them.

A better strategy for slow times is to be up and straightening your display, dusting, polishing, being en-gaged with your wares and ready to chat with whoever comes by. If you are doing some kind of easily inter-rupted activity, it doesn’t appear that you are waiting to pounce on them, or too bored to care.
