tran[at\. Mihai Leu,Dorin „Mo[u“ Doroftei, Lucian „Frumu[elu’“ Bute, Adrian „Rechi-nu’“ Diaconu, [i, de ce nu, Jo Jo Dan s-au n\scut `ntr-o na]ie ex-trem de talentat\ din multe puncte de vedere - dar del\s\toareprin diriguitorii ei, `n prea multe domenii - [i au performat afar\, `nGermania, respectiv Canada, acolo unde talentul lor a rodit, con-secin]\ a seriozit\]ii [i profesionismului profesorilor.

Pentru c\ abia acolo unde pasiunea `[i d\ m‚na cu [tiin]ade a face business, banii sus]in talentul, motiveaz\ [i na[tecampioni.

When this magazine is released, the match will have beenfought. The victory will already have been awarded. Most certainly,Jo Jo will have been acclaimed by those Romanians who still re-member to live up to their passions, to live like Romanians do, whostill shed a tear, like Il Luce, when, after countless hours of hardwork and millions of frustrations, results start to ascertain your val-ue. After this fight, Jo Jo will have a short way to go to join the racefor the world title. Couldn't we call rich a country with five worldchampions in professional boxing? Certainly, you are going to saythat America is rich, with its dozens of champions. But can thisstand as a comparison? Mihai Leu, Dorin „Mosu” Doroftei, Lucian„Frumuselu'” Bute, Adrian „Rechinu” Diaconu, and, why not, Jo JoDan were born in a country with extreme talent from many pointsof view - but leaving much to be desired from its leaders in manydomains - and have performed overseas, in Germany and respec-tively Canada, where their talent was harvested pursuant to thededication and professionalism of their trainers.

Because it is only when passion meets business science thatmoney can support talent and motivate true champions. Except forNadia and Patzaichin, all our sporting symbols gave their best out-side the country. Including Gica Hagi and Ilie Nastase. So manyheartfelt Romanian perform outside the country without forgettingthat they are Romanian, without forgetting to “wear” the nationalflag. People for whom the national system was unable to create theenvironment to support such performances.

And only in front of these victories do you wonder how muchhuman treasure we may have lost in the children beat down by thesystem, in the young driven away from the country to performanonymous, in turn, in their adoptive countries.

Poor little rich people! You could have been so far… ∫

EVERYBODY WANTS TOKNOW: IS YOUR RELATION-SHIP WITH ELANSCHWARTZENBERG SERI-OUS?

I am reluctant to share de-tails about my personal life; Ithink it concerns me alone.

OK, THEN LET’S GET BACKTO MUSIC. WHAT NEWS ISANA LESKO PREPARINGFOR HER FANS IN 2009?

A new hit called “Balalaika”the text of which was written byme together with AngelicaVasilcov. A video clip will follow,as well as the launch of my newalbum for which I collaboratedwith various famous songwrit-ers like Gabriel Huiban, Lauren-tiu Duta or Dan Griobor.

MOLDOVA MANAGED A BET-TER POSITION THANROMANIA AT EUROVISION.IS IT JUST AN OCCUR-RENCE OR IS SHOW-BIZFROM CHISINAU BETTERTHAN THAT FROMBUCHAREST?

We can’t really make gener-al statements related to music. I

think that if you try hard, workhard, and know exactly whatyou want and like to work withprofessionals, you are bound tobecome one of the best.

What country would you liketo represent at Eurovision in thefuture – Romania, Moldova oranother country?

I will take this decision to-gether with my manager, RaduGroza.

TELL US ABOUT YOURDEBUT IN MUSIC. WHEREAND HOW DID YOU COMETO ROMANIA?

It’s a long story that youcan read in nearly all my inter-views. In a nutshell: I am part ofa family of musicians, I wasbrought up with music and Igrew mature with music andnow the only thing I can think ofdoing is only music.

WHO WAS THE PERSONHELPING YOU MOST WITHYOUR CAREER AS ANARTIST?

Radu Groza, the man Icompletely trust because he isa professional and always hasideas to get you out of aquandary.

DON’T YOU EVER GETTIRED OF BEING A BEAUTI-FUL WOMAN?

PENTRU C| TOAT| LUMEAVREA S| {TIE, ESTE SE-RIOAS| RELA}IA TA CUELAN SCHWARTZENBERG?

~nc\ nu vreau s\ intru `ndetalii despre via]a mea per-sonal\, cred c\ m\ prive[tenumai pe mine.

BINE, ATUNCI S| REVENIMLA MUZIC|. CE NOUT|}IPREG|TE{TE ANA LESKOFANILOR S|I, ~N 2009?

SPUNE-NE CUM AI DEBUTAT ~N MUZIC|,UNDE {I CUM AI VENIT ~N ROMÂNIA?

ANA LESKO IS A GENUINE PRESENCE. SENSUAL, MYSTERI-OUS AND WITH EYES THAT AN LITERALLY SPEAK, OR SING,BETTER THAN DOZENS OF NOVELS, OR MUSIC SCORES…

I don’t try to be, I try to be asnatural as possible, I don’t knowwhether this shows, but it’s the wayI am.

WHO IS, IN YOUR OPINION,THE SEXIEST MAN INROMANIA, THESE DAYS?

I don’t think the looks shouldcount as much as the inner as-pects of a man… At least in mycase it doesn’t.

THEY SAY THAT FOR SPECIALWOMEN NATURE DOES SPE-CIAL THINGS. WHAT WAS THE MOST INCREDIBLE THING THAT NATUREOFFERED YOU?

The eyes.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELFTO BE A LUCKY WOMAN?

I think of myself as a maturewoman who knows exactly whatshe wants but who also believes ina speck of good luck that’s neveravoided her so far.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TOTRANSMIT YOUR FAITHFULFANS THROUGH FRO MAGAZINE?

To watch me in concerts. ∫

CARE ESTE, ~N OPINIA TA,CEL MAI SEXY B|RBAT DIN ROMÂNIA ACESTORTIMPURI?

Nu cred c\ ar trebui s\conteze at‚t de mult fizicul pec‚t interiorul fiec\rui b\rbat...Cel pu]in `n cazul meu a[a se`nt‚mpl\.

SE SPUNE C|, PENTRU O FEMEIE DEOSEBIT|,NATURA FACE LUCRURIDEOSEBITE. CARE A FOSTLUCRUL CEL MAI INCREDI-BIL PE CARE }I L-A OFERITNATURA?

CONSIDERI C| E{TI O FEMEIE NOROCOAS|?

Mittal places at the begin-ning of this year on the 8th posi-tion with an estimated fortune of$19.3 billion. Besides, he is therichest man in Great Britain in atop in which he has been thefirst for the last five years.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON59 years after the modest

beginnings in the Indian villageof Sadulpur, Rajahstan, Laksh-mi Mittal built a genuine empirewith ramifications on the entireglobe. Born in a poor family,Mittal set the bases of his huge

fortune in more than twodecades, a great part of hisbusiness relating to the steel in-dustry. Small steel factories arecommon business in rural ar-eas in India and Lakshmi Mit-tal's father decided it was thecase for him too to have such abusiness. His small factory sold80% of the production to a bro-ker from Calcutta who was soimpressed with the intelligenceof the old Mittal that he calledhim to work him, in Calcutta. Af-ter obtaining a degree in Com-merce, at St. Xavier's College inCalcutta, Lakshmi Mittal startedworking for his father's busi-ness, receiving the task of set-ting up an international division. The first mission was to find abargain, a cheap factory in In-donesia. From this point, thecunning businessman took overa series of companies, turningthe family business into what itis today: the largest steel com-pany in the world, with over320,000 employees in 60 coun-tries. In Romania, the companyowns the factories at MittalSteel Gala_i (the former metal-lurgical combinate), Mittal SteelIa_i (the former Tepro), MittalSteel Hunedoara (the formerSiderurgica) and Mittal SteelRoman (the former Petrotub),as well as the harbor operatorRomportmet. In 1994, LakshmiMittal separated from his family, taking over the internationalsector of the family business, without the Mittal family ever re-ferring to the reasons of thisseparation.

JO JO, HOW DIFFICULT DOYOU EXPECT THE FIGHT TOBE AGAINST GOMEZ?

Each fight is difficult in itsown way. The opponents aredifferent, they have differentfight styles. Unfortunately, Icouldn't get my hands on anyrecordings to be able to studyhis style. Honestly, I hardly knowanything about him, except forhis fighting history. He foughtmany professional matches,he has the experience, and hefought excellent opponentswhom he defeated. So he willbe a difficult opponent…

YOU SAID YOU DIDN'TREALLY GET A CHANCE TOSTUDY HIM…

Unfortunately no. I browsedthe Internet but I couldn't findany video recordings with him. Ionly know he's a right handfighter. But the fact that I don'tknow him won't prevent mefrom doing my best to defeathim, that's for sure.

IF YOU KEEP YOUR BELT,WHOM DO YOU PREFER TOHAVE AS OPPONENT FORYOU NEXT FIGHT?

They talk about an elimina-

tory fight for the WBC versionat the 63.5 Kg. Being elimina-tory - something that I am hop-ing for - it will be an opponentfrom the top 10. I am ranked5th. Of course it will also be ac-cepted by the WBC staff.

WHICH ARE THE NEXTSTEPS TOWARDS THEFIGHT FOR THE WORLDTITLE AT YOUR CATEGORY?

If I win this eliminatory fight,I will become an obligatorychallenger for the world title. The champion will be forced togrant me a fight.

HOW IS YOUR STAY IN THECOUNTRY, HOW IS YOURFAMILY, YOUR FRIENDS?

I feel great. Whenever Icome to Romania I feel excel-lent because it's home. Thewelcome was a surprise, thebest one yet.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TOTRANSMIT TO ROMANIANS?

That I am counting on themto join me at the event. I hopemany Romanians will come tosupport me and I won't letthem down. I will offer them afantastic fight! ∫

Investing in art is, after all, amatter of courage. As I was say-ing before, it's just like trading atthe stock exchange. You can'ttrade without guts, without un-dertaking a certain risk, withoutcourage. And when I say in-vestors, I mean people who dealmillions of Euros; who also dealbillions of lei, money which theyearned from business activities;they know how things stand andhow to make money.

Let me give you an example:a project in which you investEUR10,000; or EUR20,000. Idon't think anyone would con-sider - from the business envi-ronment, of course - that, no

matter what, this is a loss. Well, this EUR20,000 is a sum I amwilling to pay, or some otherguy, to set up a project with thegreat actor... X or Y - I don't wantto nominate. For a certain cate-gory of people EUR20,000 is notmuch of a sum. Or maybe it'ssomething to have as sparechange while doing the shop-ping.

So I invest several thousandand I expect a successful showin return. Let's do the math! If Iinvested EUR10,000, let's say, ina show set up in a certain hallcontaining 150 seats, withRON25 as price tag for eachseat. How much will I get from

the cash-ins? Almost a thousandEuros. As such, from the first tenperformances, you, as an in-vestor, have a full return of yourinvestment. And starting with the11th, you start having profit.

See?! I conclude therefromthat we're dealing with a strangemindset in these places, whichprevents us from seeing a sim-ple truth and which makes ussuspicious with respect to in-vesting in culture, in books, insomething that eventually, ac-cording to the very simple calcu-lations we just did with honestyand no exaggeration - a 500-seathall and a price of RON50 perseat -, will lead to a certain profit.

Add to my calculation agood marketing activity, eventset-up activities, invest five leifrom the cash-ins in promotion, conventional or not, and you arebound to have more audience, hence more money.

But I can see it's not easy toshake certain suspicions, espe-cially for those situated outsidethe phenomenon. We are al-ready inside a vicious circle. Asan outsider you don't see the artmarket, you can't feel the busi-ness in it and as an insider youdon't have the money to do it. If Ipersonally had a few hundredthousand Euros, a million, Iwould immediately invest it intheater, in theater shows, in artbusiness. I am sure I wouldn't beat a loss, I wouldn't go bankrupt. The Americans, with their prag-matism and thorough calcula-tions, thrive on all sorts of art re-

lated businesses: film making, theater, book publishing - toname just a few.

Now, getting back to ourhomeland, Metropolis Theater ishosting a few performanceswhich are being played for morethen ten, twenty, thirty perform-ances with sold-out tickets. Notjust one show, but several. Witha full audience. People want art, they want shows. Yesterday, forinstance, as I was about to get inmy car two ladies addressed measking me firmly to find a solu-tion for them to be able to gettickets.

Art done with intelligence, with talent and passion sellsmuch better than hot cakes. Allyou have left to do is to under-stand its role. Of course that inart, in theater, you won't get richover night. But the benefits areinfinitely more rewarding whenyou invest not only money -which I proved can bring a returnon your investment and profit af-ter a few representations - but al-so a piece of your soul, also a bitof imagination...it's an invest-ment in children, in youth. All thiscan be quantified, over years, over generations, in the cultureof a nation, of a people who, having a certain mindset, lead-ing a certain life, progresses inthis direction at the same timerewarding you, the creator of art,the investor in art, with a returnon your investment, both materi-al and spiritual.

I think that, for this alone if notfor something else, it's worth it. ∫

din re]et\, din `ncas\ri? Aproape o mie de euro. ~n consecin]\,din primele zece reprezenta]ii, tu, investitor, ]i-ai scos banii.Din cea de-a 11-a, e[ti pe profit.

P\i vede]i?!

The Romanian SpaceAgency is a public institutioncoordinating space related ac-tivities within the country. It's anational agency set up in 1995and fully financed from non-budget incomes. It has asmain objectives the coordina-

tion of national space activi-ties, the promotion of researchin the domains of science andspace applications, the imple-mentation of the applicationsand scientific-technological re-sults in the national economy. The agency is Romania's rep-resentative in relation with themajor organizations and withthe major international treatiesin the space domain.

space research program initi-ated by the Ministry of Edu-cation and Research. Alto-gether, the Agency is coordi-nating the inter-ministriesgroup for the research in thedomain of security, which ledto including the security com-ponent in the research pro-gram, starting with 2006.

WHAT ARE THE MOSTIMPORTANT ELEMENTS OFTHE PROGRAM?

Currently, the program“Space and security” has fivedirections of development:“Space explorations”, whereresearchers prepare partici-

pations to international scien-tific missions, build space re-lated instruments and ob-jects. The program “Spaceapplications”, which meanssatellite telecommunications, observation of the Earth fromsatellite, satellite navigationsystems, integrated spaceapplications - space telemed-icine, high-precision agricul-ture, the execution of geo-graphical information sys-tems, assisted from space, disaster monitoring. “Aero-space technologies”, an areawhere researchers are devel-oping technologies allowing, mainly, the cooperation of

CARE SUNT CELE MAI IMPORTANTE ELEMENTE ALE PROGRAMULUI?

~n prezent, programul „Spa]iu [i securitate“ are cinci direc]ii:„Explor\ri spa]iale“, unde se realizeaz\ particip\ri la misiuni [ti-in]ifice interna]ionale, construc]ii de instrumente spa]iale [iobiecte spa]iale.

Romanian organizations withhigh-technology structuresbelonging to the EuropeanSpace Agency. Here they de-sign instruments and equip-ment compatible with the in-ternational space standards. As I was saying, there are twomore directions, typical for thefield of security - “Securitytechnologies” and “Securitysystems and infrastructures”.

ARE THERE CURRENTLYANY SPACE RELATEDINSTRUMENTS OROBJECTS CREATED BYTHE RSA?

Certainly, and I can eventell you that a Romanian nano-satellite was selected in orderto be launched with the Euro-pean rocket Vega. However, the flight was postponed bymore than 18 months and wehope it wil l be resumed inmonth November of this year.In parallel, we continued toproduce nano-satellites andcurrently I can say that it ispossible to develop a spaceindustry based on this field.

WITH RESPECT TO THE

COLLABORATION WITHTHE BODIES OF THEEUROPEAN SPACEAGENCY, WHICH ARE THEMOST INTERESTING ELE-MENTS?

The cooperation with theEuropean Space Agencymeans not only developinghigh-technology projects, butalso supplying technologyand equipment for the per-formance of the Europeanspace program. I would like topoint out that a Romaniancompany from Bacau - WorldMachinery Works - managedto win the auction pursuant towhich it is going to build com-ponents for the Europeanrocket Ariane, the largest andmost efficient rocket in theworld.

We also collaborate withthe European Commissionwhich, together with ESA,manages two large programs- GMES, global monitoring ofenvironment and security, andGALILEO, the European satel-lite radio-navigation system, the competitor for the Ameri-can GPS system. GALILEO isa 24-satellite system which is

Page 43: FRO No. 9

to become operational some-where around year 2013 and,as opposed to the Americansystem, it will be under civilmonitoring. This means that itwill not allow interruption forsecurity reasons. The fact thatthe system will operate per-manently allows the use ofsatellite radio-navigation sys-tems mainly by aircraft; cur-rent satellite signals are simplyinformative, as GPS is not fullysafe precisely due to the factthat it can be interrupted bythe American army in case ter-rorist action is foreseen.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOROBJECTIVES OF THEAGENCY, MR. PISO?

Currently, we have twovery important objectives: the

first is setting up a regional of-fice for monitoring disasters, acomponent of the UN systemcalled “SPIDER”; the secondrefers to the development of aworkgroup for the study ofcosmic objects close to Earth- meteorites, asteroids, comets and other objectswhich can cause trouble forEarth.

ON WHAT CONDITIONSCAN PEOPLE GO OUT INCOSMIC SPACE?

People can currently goout in space only on the Inter-national Space Station. It'spretty big, but it's not finishedyet. In order to get here, anastronaut has to be part of theEuropean astronauts' body, selected by the ESA. In viewthereof, Romania can partici-pate only starting next yearwhen, hopefully, it will becomea member. Starting with theday Romania becomes part ofthe ESA convention, any Ro-manian citizen will be able toapply for this competition forselection.

WHAT ABOUT SPATIALTOURISTS?

Currently, Russia is theonly one to have sent touristsout into space. Long flights, with human crew on board isnowhere to be seen any-where soon. Suborbitalspace tourism will probablytake shape - like a sort ofbungee jumping - as high upas 100-200 Km, flights last-ing some tens of seconds, which will not be extremelyexpensive - maybe a fewhundred thousanddollars.∫

CE OBIECTIVE IMPORTANTE ~{I PROPUNE AGEN}IA, DOMNULE PISO?

First of all, I put the baconto roast to have the required fat- that is to say that I let it melt inthe pot - which will make for anexquisite smoked flavor andthen I roast all the meat togetherand blend it all in. Before allthat, I first roasted some onionsin olive oil, three of four, to giveit consistence and sweetness, then I add the celery, carrots, peppers, red peppers andgreen peppers, which I roastedproperly, that is very gently, andthen I cooled everything, includ-ing the smoked meat, with oldwine, the all good ingredient, the secret of any genius-chef,just as honey.

After all these I put in thespices: coriander, juniper and, certainly, the pepper mixture. What you can feel here is the re-sult, says the master while Istruggle to keep up with all thescents.

Thinking of the polenta -completely missing from thefeast -, I have a taste of the blendof meats, a handful of smokednuances - here a bit more vague, there more dense, breeze-like orblown by the wind - and I swal-low it with increasing pleasurewhile every now and then - withthe aid of my memory - the tasteof the one and only polentacomes to my senses.

MUSHROOM IN WHITESAUCE, A BORDER BUSINESS

Leave some more room - Ican hear him say -, I have some-thing else to offer you, also a col-lection item. I startle and think tomyself that it's time for the longanticipated polenta. I have amushrooms stew, as we call itaround here, or mushrooms inwhite sauce. The difference be-tween our stew and you mush-rooms in white sauce consists inthe larger quantity of cream inthe kitchen of the Ardeal regionwhich is usually characterized by

a consistent share of cream andpork fat. The traditional recipe formushrooms in white sauce con-sists in a white sauce, made ofbutter melted in the pot and sep-arate boiled mushrooms. Youadd then a bit of water and a bitof flour. When everything boils, you add the mushrooms, blend itall in and on top of the thicksauce you add some milk. Myrecipe for stew adds the surpriseof slightly roasting the mush-rooms - because this is how theygive off their delicious juice - thencooled with water, adding a bit offlour and cream to the sauce. Ofcourse it packs a lot of calories, but the taste is worth it.

I search once again for thepolenta but I realize that themaster is simply speaking inmetaphors. It's about a marvelthat you only understand when itgoes missing. Oh, and by theway, says master Poenaru, if youmissed the taste of polenta, you'llfind it more tasty next time when Itell you the story of the goldencorn and essential polenta…∫
