Center Supervisor's MessageSeptember is the perfect month with warm days, fewer hot ones and cooler nights. Along with the change of seasons comes a change in daily routines for many of us. Kids go back to school, summer vacations wrap up and families get back into their daily

routines. Older adults oftentimes have seasonal routines as well.

We find that the fall is a very busy time here at the Milwaukie Center as people switch out of their summer mode. Many people decide to begin a new class or activity or they may pursue a hobby that they have been considering. Others decide to spend some of their energy on volunteering as a way to give back to the community. For some, the cooler weather simply gives them the opportunity to get out and visit the Milwaukie Center for lunch and companionship. Whatever your reason for visiting this fall, know that you are welcome to be part of our community and we look forward to seeing you here.

GENTLE YOGA WITH GENA LAFRENIER

I’ve taken many yoga classes through the community schools for years and years, and I’ve ridden horses for about 20 years. I wanted to maintain my strength, flexibility and balance to continue riding horses, but I also had a major change in my life in the last five years. Once I retired, I found myself taking meditation and yoga classes which led to completing a Yoga Teacher Training through Lundberg Alignment Based Yoga. I love that yoga brings together awareness and mindfulness with physical movements and can be modified to be accessible to anyone. Yoga gives me the energy to keep up with my four grandkids and the strength and flexibility to keep riding my horse.

Gena LaFrenier, Gentle Yoga Instructor

MORNING T’AI CHI WITH SHARON V. MILLER

You asked for it, and now you have it! A beginning T’ai Chi class in the morning. This class will be held Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. beginning in October. A demo class will be held Monday, September 17, 9:30-10:30 a.m. so you can check it out for yourself.

The new instructor, Sharon V. Miller, comes from a dance background and likens the 24 T’ai Chi movements to “flowing like a river.” Her goal for this class is for every participant to experience success. If you have limitations, the magic word is “modify.” All you have to do is change your position (sit, stand, brace on a chair, etc.) to make it work for you. Sharon has no assumptions of what her students can or will accomplish. She believes in you!

Sharon has been studying T’ai Chi since 2006 and has been teaching since 2010. Her methods are a mix of knowing the movements in their technical way and the creativity of dance. Sharon sees T’ai Chi as more than fitness -- it’s a life-long process.

The inner work of T’ai Chi comes after your body learns the movements in your muscles and your brain is freed up to focus on your breathing, meditation and balance. The benefits of T’ai Chi are increased balance, enhanced breathing, better circulation, increased immune system, warding off diseases, and also benefiting as a coping mechanism for some conditions such as Parkinson’s.

For this class you will want to wear comfortable clothes and shoes with smooth soles (not sandals). Athletic shoes have a grip in the soles that will keep you from “flowing.”

If you are new to T’ai Chi, know that learning the movements takes time and patience. Be kind to yourself, stay relaxed and enjoy the process. The reward is at the end.
