There is a lot of information to discuss so we’ll break it down into a few parts throughout this year. Watch for more information in your next newsletter coming in July!

what kinds of costs are associated with debit cards? There may be fees for using your debit card. For example, you may trigger a fee if you overdraw your account using your debit card, just as you would if you “bounced” a check, which means you didn’t have enough money in your account to cover the purchase amount. Or, there could be a charge if you use your debit card to withdraw cash at an aTM that is not operated by, or in the same network as, the bank. When you get a debit card, be sure to ask questions and read through the disclosures you get so you know how to avoid these unexpected fees.

sometimes you’re asked to enter a pin to approve a debit card transaction, other times you can chose to sign your name. does it matter?Yes, it could. For example, if you use a PIN at a merchant’s sales counter, you also may be able to get cash back, and that can save you a trip to the aTM. There also may be differences in how quickly the transaction is posted to your account.

what is a credit card?a credit card is similar to a debit card. You swipe it just like you would a debit card. however, unlike a debit card, a credit card is not tied to your checking or savings account. Instead, you’re really borrowing money from the bank to make purchases.

why do people use credit cards? You might use a credit card if you don’t have enough money in your account to cover the amount of your purchase. some credit cards also offer rewards points that give you things like cash back or airline tickets. When used wisely, credit cards can also be a great tool to building your credit score (we’ll discuss that more in another issue).

what kinds of costs are associated with credit cards?First and foremost, almost every credit card has an interest rate that you’ll be charged if you don’t pay your balance off every month.

What does that mean? Well, remember that you’re really borrowing money when you use a credit card, which means you have to pay that money back. and just like any other loan you might take out, you’ll be charged interest. Luckily, you can avoid paying interest if you can pay back everything you charged throughout the month.

There are other fees for credit cards as well, depending on the card type and the bank or credit card company that issues the card. There could be annual membership fees, cash advance fees, late payment fees, and more. Before you apply for a credit card, be sure to read through all of the fees and chose the best card for you. ask your parents or any of our Personal Bankers for help.

happy earth day!

earth Day is april 22nd, and one simple thing you can do to give back to the earth is stop using plastic bottled water or drinks.

Instead, fill up a reusable bottle.

Why? It takes 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade, and only about 10% of plastic bottles are actually recycled. That means

90% of plastic bottles end up in landfills and will still be there

450 years from now. so help save the earth and avoid using plastic

bottles when you can!

fun & gAmesQuick! Count the number of times that the letter “F” appears in the following sentence:

“Finished files are the result of years of scientific study combined with the experience of years.”

how many did you find?

solution: Most people say three. Why? We often don’t correctly process the word “OF” for two reasons. First, the letter F usually makes the “f” sound, like in “fox”. however, in the word “of”, it makes a “v” sound. second, you have probably read the word “of” so many times in your life that you process it as one unit, overlooking the second letter/ sound.

have you ever played sudoko? If not, here are some instructions and helpful hints to help solve the puzzle! (Hint: You might want to use a pencil.)

1. every sudoku puzzle has a grid of 9 large squares (with a darker outline). Inside each of those larger squares are 9 smaller squares, and some of those already are filled in with numbers from 1 to 9.

2. every column, row and large square must have all of the numbers from 1 to 9, without repeating a number. so, if there is a “2” in a square, you’ll know a “2” can’t go anywhere else in the same column, row or square.

3. To solve the puzzle, find the missing numbers in each column, row and square.

Let’s do the first few together.

• The large square in the middle has one empty space. If you count all the numbers in that square, you’ll notice one number is missing. Write that number in the space and then that square and row are solved as all of the numbers from 1 to 9 are there!

• Next, figure out the large square above the red one. (hint: Remember, each number can only appear once in the same column. so, if you take the number you just figured out and follow that column up to the square above it, you know that number can’t be in the bottom missing space (under the 1), so it must go in the middle right space (under the 7).

• That’s it! Now find the numbers that go in the rest of the missing spaces to solve the puzzle.
