GENERAL MANAGER REPORT by Brian Trout
For those of us wintering on Delmarva we look forward to warmer days, flowers blooming, and green grass…and a LOT less rain. The winter hasn’t been all that cold, but the pattern that we have endured has been wet with much of the inclement weather effecting our normal weekend play. It hasn’t been ideal, but knowing spring is right around the corner keeps us plugging ahead and preparing for the upcoming season. Speaking of the upcoming season…it is March and won’t be long before we get right back into the swing of things. Both the Golf events and F&B social calendars have been finalized and are located on the members-only portion of the website. I encourage you to take a look and plan well in advance as there is a full slate of exciting events throughout the year. Throughout the year we send out emails notifying members of upcoming events, ongoing course work, and informational changes (such as the “New” USGA Rules of Golf). Much of that is also reiterated in the write-ups coming from the Committee Chairmen and can be read within this current chronicle. Questions about anything listed within these write-ups can be directed to the Chairmen, or feel free to ask me as I’m always available to talk and clarify what is happening at the club. That leaves me with the overall health and direction of Cripple Creek. Our business continues to thrive and operate effectively and efficiently. In late 2015 / early 2016 timeframe the decision was made to shift the governance style of the Board of Directors to one of Strategic, allowing the General Manger and Department Heads the autonomy to run the everyday operational side of the business. Shortly thereafter in 2017, the Strategic Vision for Cripple Creek was developed to “improve, develop, and sustain our beloved club for the future”. This was published and sent out to the membership. Recapping some of those main items: • Membership Strategy-Successfully grown all categories of membership while also retaining current club
members. • Amenity Improvements-Built a state-of-the-art practice facility to be utilized by our current membership,
as well as, providing another amenity frequently asked about by prospective members. This was just the first step towards offering more amenities.
• Social Hub-Created a relaxed family friendly environment for all membership categories through extended hours both at the Pool and within the Pub. This, along with additional menu items including seasonal offerings, and a full entertainment schedule throughout the year.
These are but a mere few of the items tackled from the Strategic Vision and have been accomplished using our normal course of fiscal management and reinvestment into the club. Our goal is to continuously grow the business and the future looks bright with the lightning fast growth of the beach region. While we will continue to improve the course, offering enhanced amenities beyond golf is imperative. These might include, but are not limited to, a work-out area or gym, Pickleball courts, golf simulators, bocce ball, etc. Other items such as kitchen expansion, increased or reconfigured dining space, updating of the current facility, increased parking, and additional office space are all items identified in the Strategic Vision and needed due to the growth of the business. Included with my write-up is an article from the February edition of “The Private Club Advisor” which is published for Directors, Officers and Managers of Private Clubs. I encourage you to read the article as it validates the changes to club governance while also advocating the need of having and following a sound strategic plan. We look forward to maintaining Cripple Creek as one of the finest Private Country Club’s in the Delmarva region, and are excited at the future outlook for the club.

GREENS COMMITTEE REPORT by Pete Fronczek
Anyone who has stayed in the area this off-season doesn’t have to be told that
we have had a very rainy late fall and winter. In fact, the Delaware Department
of Natural Resources reports that 2018 was the wettest year in the state since
the early 1940s. It looks like 2019 is starting off the same way.
The excessive rain has meant that Superintendent Glen MacDonald and his
staff have spent much of their time lately trying to move water off the golf
course and into our ponds and eventually out to the bay. It has also highlighted
those areas with significant drainage problems. The worst problem is the area
from the green on hole #4 to about 100 yards out, between hole #4 approach
and hole #8 white tee box, and in the back of the #8 white tee box. Glen is
working on a plan, including consulting with the USGA and drainage experts,
to mitigate the problem in this large area. This will be a major project and it
may be a while before we can solve the problem completely.
Glen and staff have also been busy with the usual off-season work such as
repainting tee markers and sanding and staining signs, benches, and water
cooler housing. He has also removed several trees this off-season. These trees
were unhealthy, growing to close to other trees, or obstructing play on tee shots
or shots to the green.
Spring is just around the corner. We have already gone back to one hole on all
greens and it won’t be long before a full set of tee markers are out and we are
no longer using temporary greens and tees. Let’s hope things dry out soon.

CCWGA 18 HOLE by Cynthia Hunsberger
It’s been a long, cold, wet winter but spring and good weather are on their
way. The coming golf season is shaping up to be a very exciting one. The
officers and committee chairs have been busy planning events and tournaments
for the 18 Hole Ladies. Anyone who would like to join the ladies on Wednesday
please contact Carole Mankus ([email protected]). There are a few things
we want to bring to your attention and for you to think about before the season starts. There are a lot of new
rules this year and we encourage everyone to attend the seminar sponsored by the club on March 29th . We
will be using the new rules so please at least read up on them, they can be found online at the USGA
website. Please consider joining both the WPGA and the DWGA both organizations promote golf for
women, run tournaments both fun and challenging, offer Open Days at member clubs that allow you to play
courses from PA to VA and offer clinics etc...You can join the WPGA by contacting Brenda Bove
([email protected]) and the DWGA by accessing their website at www.DWGA.org.
