Bumbling reporters are undoubtedly overcome by a beguiling sense of calm when an interviewee answers their phone on the second ring,

addresses you by name, and sounds bright and alert, even though your time of calling is still technically the middle of the night to anyone other than those souls fortunate enough to work in horse racing.

Michael Kent, the 28-year-old newly-recruited co-trainer, who was recently headhunted by Mick Price to bring both training and bloodstock expertise to his

expanding operation, embodies all of those qualities. He also speaks eloquently and intelligently, making observations – particularly regarding bloodstock – that subsequently require pause for thought, his comments carrying a ‘that makes sense’ overtone, which is no mean feat.

Kent’s outlook should not come as a surprise. The son of Cranbourne-based trainer Mick Kent, whom for the past eight years he has worked alongside at various stages as well as juggling a range of bloodstock commitments, Kent has cut his teeth with internationally-recognised figures from both the bloodstock and training spheres. Dual-Group 1 winner Grunt (O’Reilly) will spearhead Yulong Investments’ move into the stallion market in 2019, standing at the operation’s newly-acquired Yulong Farm in Nagambie, Victoria, for a fee of $13,750 (inc GST).

Trained by Mick Price to win five of his 12 starts, Grunt was officially retired to stud yesterday having accumulated a brace of elite-level victories and $1,382,450 in prize-money during a stellar career on the track.

“It is tremendously exciting for Yulong’s stallion division to be launched with a dual-Group 1 miler the quality of Grunt,” said Sam Fairgray, COO of Yulong Investments.

Agents Dermot Farrington and Phill Cataldo fall into the former bracket, while a year spent observing Newmarket-based supremo William Haggas as pupil assistant was followed by a whistle-stop ‘stable-hop’ across Britain, Ireland and France, fortnightly spells with Roger Charlton, Richard Hannon, Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins preceding a month with Mikel Delzangles in Chantilly. Unsurprisingly, Kent admits he ‘all the while took notes’ during his time aboard – ‘and I’ve still got those notes today’.

However, in the same way attractive pedigrees and top-tier preparations are not guaranteed to produce a racehorse of significant merit, hailing from a background steeped in racing is by no means a direct precursor to a successful career in an industry that can be as fickle as it is rewarding.

Of course, being the son of a trainer incurs natural privileges for those seeking to follow a similar path, not least the instant access to knowledge, information and individuals that those born beyond the realms of the sport will find it harder, or perhaps impossible, to acquire, but with that mantle comes expectations - be them real or imagined - about what that individual ought to achieve, and breaking the shackles of a preconceived identity is in many respects an unenviable task.

Equally, there is perhaps a temptation for those born into such circumstances to rest on their laurels – to assume that success will be forthcoming, rather than earned – and to ride the crest of a wave that is fundamentally not theirs to surf. This, however, is certainly not true for Kent.

“Mick Price is an amazing trainer. He’s managed to be in the top five trainers in Victoria in the last 15 years and he definitely will be my mentor. I’m not a partner in his business, I’m a partner in the training side of things, and I’ll be learning as I go along,” Kent says during his drive to work, one which ensures he arrives thirty minutes before pull-out time so he can ride two lots before the white-heat of the morning exercise regime begins, asking those pertinent questions – ‘is it sore?’; ‘is it happy?’; ‘is it moving well? – before providing invaluable feedback to Price as well as his new colleagues.

Explaining how the venture came about, Kent continues: “I have never worked for Mick before, but I’ve been managing the bloodstock of Phoenix Thoroughbreds in Australia over the last ten months and in doing so I’ve had a relationship with him.

“He sat me down at the Classic Sale, said he’d been watching me and that I was the right person for the job. I was surprised, but it was an amazing offer, and I think it’s the right way to venture into training for somebody my age – Mick has already got a system in place with a great team of staff and it’s far different from having to build-up your own training stable from scratch.”

Kent speaks candidly about his experience with Phoenix, highlighting the benefits of being involved with a burgeoning operation not only from the perspective of absorbing knowledge from some of the most-respected figures in bloodstock – he accompanied Farrington to Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale when he purchased Saturday’s Ranvet Stakes (registered as the Rawson Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) runner-up He’s Eminent (Frankel) for 150,000gns as a yearling in 2015 – but also from the perspective of working with trainers, and understanding the expectations of blue-chip clientele from a communication point of view.

“It’s been an eye-opening experience dealing with the elite breeding farms in Australia as well as dealing with a lot of Australia’s best trainers daily,” he continues. “Now I am venturing into training myself, I think it is really crucial to understand that from an owner’s perspective and what owners expect from their trainers.

“It was a good lesson for me – to understand the best way of dealing with owners who want results and, say, what to do if a horse is not good enough. You quickly learn what is a good approach.”

Kent’s depth of bloodstock knowledge and experience was one factor which brought him to the attention of Price and sourcing yearlings will be an intrinsic feature of his new role, one which Kent is set to begin immediately at the upcoming Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

“Sourcing the right yearling is half of the battle,” he says. “As any trainer will tell you, it’s far easier to train a V8 than it is a Mini. You want to find those elite athletes and once you’ve got those in your stable, it makes life a lot easier.”

When asked which qualities he primarily looks for in a yearling, Kent replies with his customary forethought.

“I spend a lot of time thinking about this. I love going to Group 1 races and seeing what the best horses have in common,” he says.

“Most horses are different shapes, so to speak, but I try to work out what similarities the best horses share. For instance, you don’t see good horses with short necks or a short length of rein. The best ones all have a large girth and shoulder area and a big chest cavity.

“I also love a horse with good length and a short back. Look at Snitzel – he’s got a lot of length for a small horse, but he’s got a really short back. If they are long with a short back, that tells you they’ve got a really long shoulder and a really long hip, which gives them that stride length and that good power from behind.”

Regarding the assessment of a yearling’s walk, he continues: “A good walk sells, but I don’t think that has a direct correlation with a good galloping action. We all love a good walk, but what is a good walk?

“You’re looking for overall balance, proportionality and athleticism. But as every agent will tell you, it’s a game of chance and we’re just trying to minimise the risk and increase the odds of buying a good one. You’re looking for athletes that look fast – you just want fast horses.”

Kent’s eye for a yearling is matched by a broader understanding of the market as a whole, particularly in a culture of syndication whereby trainers are buying on spec, without an order, and the potential to be left with a hefty sum of credited horseflesh is a very real one.

These financial pressures, so often felt by trainers not just in Australia but internationally as well, are pertinent in the wake of a spate of recent retirements. Of course, not all of these departures were financially motivated, but a number served as a stark reminder that life outside of the top bracket is often far from easy, and the line between solvability and disaster is usually a fine and perilous one.

“We’ve got to buy a yearling then we’ve got to be able to market it,” he continues. “Take Mystic Journey, for instance. I reckon I’ve heard three trainers in the last week say they loved the horse at the sale, but they wouldn’t be able to syndicate her when they brought her back home to the mainland – she cost just over $11,000 and is by a non-commercial stallion.

“That’s often the mindset. It’s obviously far easier to sell the dream if a yearling is by I Am Invincible and that the horse could be $20 or 30 million in a year’s time.

“You’ve got to be careful and I think that’s where a lot of trainers have got into trouble in the past. If you over-buy, there is a lot of financial pressure. Trainers have to hold the credit and if they don’t sell that yearling prior to next year’s sale then they can’t go shopping. It’s mighty stressful.”

In this respect, Kent’s decision to enter into a partnership with Price, who recently acquired a 40-box yard in Warrnambool, rather than try and cut it alone - so often the temptation of the eager-young as they seek to break free and test their mettle, their ideas and their processes against the rest - seems prudent from the perspective of both acquiring

invaluable experience from a trainer, now 60, who has plenty of insight to offer, but also in regard to protecting himself in a business-savvy, financial way while he continues to carve his own niche.

Moreover, Kent speaks honestly about the relationship he shares with his father. He credits him highly regarding his formative experiences, ensuring these were as fulfilling and wide-ranging as possible. This is perhaps the hallmark of exceptional parenting – not seeking to mould a rigid replica, but recognising frailties and knowledge gaps and acting accordingly.

“My dad was never one to mollycoddle me – he supported me so well and gave me the best chance by kicking me out and making me go overseas and become independent,” Kent says.

“Every chance I had, he would send me off with a vet to go and do the rounds – I can’t say how many surgeries I’ve watched. I’ve also worked with sectional gurus and biomechanics guys on stride analysis, while I spent a year riding out with David Hayes and the Lindsay Park team.

“Dad has really pushed me out there, rather than just learning his way, and by doing that I’ve branched out and grasped a lot of different things.”

In this respect, it is unsurprising that Kent has deviated from the path that so many would have viewed as a natural progression – joining forces with his father and consolidating those experiences gained elsewhere before gravitating back to where it all began.

However, there is a bristling streak of independence exuding from Kent, a palpable desire to

tread his own path and be defined by his own achievements, rather than simply be characterised as an offshoot of his father.

“Dad and I have never really spoken about going into partnership,” Kent says. “He’s not at that stage where he’s looking to do so – he’s got a smaller stable – and I very much want to make my own mark on the game and be my own man.

“You look at James Cummings and what he has achieved – he’s got a far more exciting pedigree than me, yet he’s gone out on his own and he branched away from his father and his grandfather and he’s now Australia’s most promising young trainer.

“I want to do that as well. Rather than just being known as my dad’s son, by going out and doing it on my own two feet I think I’m proving it to myself and the world that I can do it on my own and can make my own mark on the game.”

He concludes more aptly than this reporter could, adding: “I don’t feel any pressure or expectation – everything comes so natural to me and I love it. I think I’m ready for this.”

Sensibility added toThe Chairman’s SaleFlight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Sensibility (Redoute’s Choice) has been added to The Chairman’s Sale at Inglis on May 3 - the first wildcard entry. A daughter of the late Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), who currently tops the broodmare sires’ table by earnings, Sensibility won one of her eight starts, amassing prize-money of $105,810, having also run a length and three-quarters second to four-time Group 1 winner Guelph (Exceed And Excel) in the Flight Stakes. Sensibility’s first two foals to pass through the ring, a colt by late Widden Stud resident Sebring (More Than Ready) and a filly by Yarraman Park sensation I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), have sold for $730,000 and $450,000 respectively. The latter is named Sensitivity and she was last seen lining-up in the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) on February 9 for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Gear change for SeabrookMick Price has elected to accept Seabrook (Hinchinbrook) without blinkers for tomorrow’s Vinery Stud Stakes (registered as Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) although he is under no illusions regarding the task facing the three-year-old, who finished three and a half lengths behind Vinery favourite Verry Elleegant (Zed) in the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) on March 16. "Verry Elleegant beat her fair and square the other day and Verry Elleegant is probably going to win again," Price said. “But it doesn't matter - we're there to compete and you never know. Not many Hinchinbrooks get tried over 2000 metres but she is out of a Don Eduardo mare and she is a pretty clean-winded horse. She's done the work, blinkers off, she seems to handle the ground ok, so if she can't fire over 2000 metres she's just not good enough. She's had the perfect prep."

Ground a questionmark for Rondinella Roger James has sounded a note of caution regarding underfoot conditions as Rondinella (Ocean Park) bids to provide him with a second HE Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill tomorrow. James landed the 2014 renewal of the Tancred with Silent Achiever (O’Reilly) and New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) third Rondinella, who was first emergency, has been given the chance to double-up following the scratching of Auvray (Le Havre). "I've always rated her right up there. In fact, I said when she won her maiden I thought she was the best I'd had since Silent Achiever," James said. "She was due to come across and run last week in the Ranvet, which Silent Achiever also won, but I pulled her off the plane because of the forecast. My biggest concern, and it's certainly a big concern, is the weather and track conditions."

Daysee to Emancipation

Daysee Doom (Domesday) will fly the flag for Ron Quinton in the Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill tomorrow with stablemate Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense) bypassing the race to concentrate on the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on April 6. Daysee Doom finished fifth in the Emancipation last year having run second in the 2017 renewal of the contest, while she was last sighted running sixth in the Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill last month. "She trialled

last Friday over 1200 metres and she won her trial, but she needed to win the trial given the opposition she was against," Quinton said. "We were happy enough with her and she's drawn a relatively good barrier for a change in five. She's rock-hard fit so she should run well."

Madison County poised to make Tulloch startIn other Rosehill news, Madison County (Pins) will line up in the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) one-week on from his intended start in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m), which was scuppered following a float incident. “He basically just rubbed himself in the float and had a bit of an abrasion around his hip area,” co-trainer Andrew Forsman told Racing.com. “It just took the skin off and it was a little bit raw. He was vetted when he got on course and he wasn’t lame, but it was probably more so not a good look to send the horse out to race.” Regarding the Tulloch, he continued: “The Kiwis are probably the ones to beat and outside of that it drops away. We would be pretty disappointed if he wasn’t running top three. It will just be interesting to see how he runs out the 2000 metres.”

Estijaab out torediscover formAlso on the Rosehill card, last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Estijaab (Snitzel) will drop in class and step up in trip to contest the Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) having run a two-length fifth behind Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi) in the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick on March 9. “She wasn’t beaten far the other day,’’ jockey Brenton Avdulla told Racing NSW. “Back in grade, up in distance - I think Saturday will tell us a lot more. At the end of the day she has had a wind problem so she’s never going to be the horse she probably could have been. Obviously she’s a talented filly, a Golden Slipper winner, and I’ll be interested to see how she goes.’’

Hayes unfazed by wide barrier

Lindsay Park have accepted three representatives for the $150,000 Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo tomorrow - Furrion (Camelot) (19), Seaburge (Sebring) (17) and first emergency Poetic Dream (Poet’s Voice) (4) - and co-trainer Ben Hayes is unconcernedabout the wide draw for early favouriteFurrion, who was last seen finishing fifth in theShaftesbury Avenue Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m)on March 2. "We've drawn a really wide barrier, but it shouldn't matter too much," Hayes toldRacing.com. "We'll just ride him nice andquiet from the barrier and if they go quick upfront - they normally do in big fields - he'll bereally rocketing home. He's absolutely thrivedbetween runs and we're really happy with himheading into the race.”

Brisbane possible for Odeon

Co-trainer Mark Zahra has also issued a positive bulletin on fellow Golden Mile starter Odeon (Zacinto), who is building towards a tilt at the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield on April 20 - a race he finished a one-length second in last year - before a possible Brisbane campaign centred on the A D Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 4 and the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) on May 18. "He's going well," Zahra said. "It was a good first-up

run and this looks a nice race second-up. He's probably going to need a fraction of luck from the gate (10), but he's a horse that's going as well as he's ever gone. He's sound, he's well and getting towards peak fitness."

Smart Horse toBendigo GuineasLater on the Bendigo card, Smart Horse (Al Maher) - who romped to a five and a half-length debut success in a Kyneton maiden (1200m) last week - will line-up in the Bendigo Guineas (Listed, 1400m) after the scratching of East Indiaman (Hinchinbrook) granted the Brent Stanley-trained three-year-old, who is owned by Hong Kong interests, a start. "He's thrived off that and I think the seven furlongs on pretty much his home track on Saturday will suit him down to the ground," Stanley told Racing.com. "He's going up in grade from his maiden win, but he'll do everything right, he'll put himself in the race, and he's come out of that win last week pretty good. If he comes out and wins Saturday, he'll probably be on a flight over to Hong Kong. That was always the plan."

Albury Cup officially abandonedThe Albury Cup (Listed, 2000m), which was scheduled to be run last Friday but was called off when a section of the track was judged unsafe, has been officially abandoned and the club will be awarded an additional showcase race-day to compensate for the loss of the meeting. Having failed to find an appropriate date for the rescheduled Albury Cup, Racing NSW announced an additional showcase meeting on April 18, which will carry an overall purse of $240,000, split equally across eight races, funded by the governing body. "The addition of a Showcase meeting provides the opportunity for a wide range of trainers and owners in the region to race for prize money that would have been paid on Albury Cup Day," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said.

Qld trainers questiontwilight meetingsQueensland trainers have again expressed concerns about an increased number of twilight fixtures after Wednesday's meeting at Toowoomba, which was moved to a twilight slot at the eleventh hour, ended under lights at 6.30pm.

The Queensland branch of the Australian Trainers Association wrote to RQ on Thursday morning expressing its reservations about some twilight racing. "Trainers, owners and jockeys are all understanding of an industry transition towards later racing and eventually more night racing as tracks come on board in the future," the trainers wrote. "However, what occurred on Wednesday at Toowoomba doesn't help participants stay on the RQ page. This is not about the choice to move a midweek metro to Toowoomba. It's the fact that the meeting evolved into a twilight meeting, which was only known by participants when acceptances came out. The calendar and RISA make no mention of twilight.”

Waratah boostsQueensland teamChris Meagher and the Waratah syndicate are set to launch a strong raid on Queensland, with a team of five horses already assembled as an overall squad is still to be finalised. They include Tap This (Tapit), Monteux (Medaglia d’Oro) and Gatlinburg (Husson), while Meagher trialled three Waratah horses at Doomben on Tuesday, with New Horizons (Frankel) and Mialign (Align) winning and Lucky Prospector (Smart Strike) finishing second. Mialign, who will run in the Conductive Education Handicap (1200m) at Doomben tomorrow, was one of the best trial winners on Tuesday, scoring by five lengths. "She has won twice in heavy going including a heavy 10 and she has been placed at Sandown on good tracks," Meagher said.

Victorian jockeys outedfor betting on racesJockeys Daniel Schmitt and John Robertson have been suspended for betting offences at hearings before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board, which were heard yesterday. Schmitt was charged by Racing Victoria stewards with placing 71 bets on thoroughbred races between January 2016 and September 2018, totalling $2050, while Robertson was charged with placing 27 bets during an 18-month period before April 2018. Neither jockey bet on races they were riding in. Schmitt was suspended until the end of the current racing season, while Robertson was suspended for three months, with six weeks suspended on the condition he undertakes counselling for a gambling problem.

Richards happywith Yourdeel

Jamie Richards has poured cold water on rumours surrounding the well-being of Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes (G 1, 1400m) favourite Yourdeel (Dundeel), issuing a positive bulletin on the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner ahead of his assignment at Awapuni tomorrow. "Yourdeel worked well on Thursday morning,” Richards said. “The horse is well. He's had a long season and he'll have a break

after Saturday. We've spoken to the owners and it's all go for Saturday. He wouldn't be there if I thought he wasn't going to be competitive. It's a concern when they don't gallop as well as they usually do but that's just it - one gallop that wasn't as good as what it normally is (penultimate piece of work). We're not worried."

Our Abbadean pleasesin final hit-outMeanwhile, stable companion Our Abbadean (Lookin At Lucky), a two-time Group 1 placegetter, pleased both Richards and jockey Craig Grylls when working at Matamata racecourse on Wednesday, her last hit-out before the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (G1, 1600m) on Saturday week. Our Abbadean worked with race-rival Supera (Savabeel) and clocked her 1000 metres in 1:00.9. “It was beautiful work,” Grylls said. “She was nice and relaxed down the back, quickened up, was doing it easy and she feels really good in her action. Her breathing was good and she’s bright and well.” Richards added: “I thought she might

have been a little lazier in the (exhibition) gallop, because normally she sits off and chases, but she was happy and travelling,” he said. “She’s in a good space, can be electric fresh and we’re looking forward to it. With the right trip, she could give them a good shake.”

Dual-Group 1 winner Grunt (O’Reilly) will spearhead Yulong Investments’ move into the stallion market in 2019, standing

at the operation’s newly-acquired Yulong Farm in Nagambie, Victoria, for a fee of $13,750 (inc GST).

“Many of the best stallions throughout history have excelled at a mile and we believe Grunt has the profile for success at stud.

“He is an outstanding-looking horse and importantly for breeders, completely Danzig-free.”

Purchased from the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale for NZ$220,000 by Price and Cameron Cooke Bloodstock, Grunt was sighted only once as a juvenile, placing third to subsequent Group 1 winner Aloisia (Azamour) at Flemington.

The son of O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) broke his maiden impressively at the beginning of his three-year-old campaign, kicking off a four-race winning streak which culminated with a

tenacious victory in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Grunt returned as a four-year-old to run out an authoritative two-length winner of the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in September, beating eight Group 1 winners in the process, before signing off his racecourse exploits with a creditable fifth in the inaugural running of the $5million All-Star Mile (1600m) earlier this month.

The four-year-old retires with a Timeform rating of 123, while his trainer is in no doubt as to his potential to excel in the stallion barn.

“An outstanding individual and brilliant 1600-metre horse, Grunt had an excellent temperament and I think he will make an excellent stallion” Price said.

From a stallion-making family, Grunt is one of three foals to race, all winners, out of the dual-winning mare Ruqquya (Van Nistelrooy), herself a half-sister to New Zealand horse of the year and promising Waikato Stud-based sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park).

Grunt is a half-brother to the stakes-placed Addison (Jimmy Choux), while further back this is the family of Group 1 winners Prince Kaapstad (Kaapstad), Courtza (Pompeii Court) and Madison County (Pins).

Like promising young stallion Dundeel (High Chaparral), Grunt carries Zabeel (Sir Tristram) on his dam side, while other sire sons of O’Reilly - Alamosa and Shamexpress - have already sired six Group winners and three Group 1 winners between them.

“On type and pedigree Grunt will suit a wide variety of mares, which is one of the major attributes that attracted us to him,” Fairgray added.

“Yulong has strengthened its broodmare band over the last 12 months and we will be supporting Grunt in his first season with many of these mares.

“We will also be active at the upcoming broodmare sales to ensure he has the best possible start to his stud career.”

Rain cast a gloomy backdrop to this morning’s “breakfast with the stars” at Meydan in Dubai but trainer Kris Lees, pleasingly, was

able to offer a much brighter outlook in terms of Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) who contests tomorrow’s $US2million Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m).

Brave Smash comes to Dubai after being beaten less than a length when third to Sunlight (Zoustar) in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington, and Lees believes his straight track capability will stand him in good stead as he bids to join Ortensia (Testa Rossa) and Buffering (Mossman) as Australian-trained winners of the race.

“The horse has travelled over really well,” Lees said. “He’s the same weight as he was when he raced in the Newmarket. He had a nice look around the track and a gallop down the straight on Tuesday morning and I couldn’t be more pleased with how he’s settled in.

“He’s very good down the straight as you’ve seen in the past two Newmarkets and I’d expect

him to race up to that level here. Even before he came to me the plan was to head this way with him with a view to a possible trip to Europe off the back of this and that’s still on the agenda, but obviously that will depend on how he goes on Saturday.

“Travel’s not an issue for him because he’s got a terrific nature for a stallion. He’s well travelled now and he’s settled in very well here.”

Lees is mindful that the Charlie Appleby-trained Blue Point (Shamardal) will be a formidable opponent but is certainly not conceding the race to him.

“It’s hard for me to line up the form but the favourite (Blue Point) can’t have done anymore than what he’s done and he’s obviously the yardstick, but I think our horse has arrived here in good order, he’s a good straight horse and they’ll know he’s here,” Lees said.

Australia will also be represented by Viddora (I Am Invincible) and Illustrious Lad (I Am Invincible) and their respective connections are also approaching the race with some degree of confidence.

By Steve Moran @anz_news

Lees delighted with Smash as Brave showing is anticipated at Meydan

Viddora was first on the track on Thursday morning and the dual-Group 1 winner, who was arguably in the worst part of the track when eighth to Booker (Written Tycoon) in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) on February 23, continues to please trainer Lloyd Kennewell.

“She was first on the turf track nice and early this morning and worked well. I’m very happy with her and I would think if she runs to her best form and her track work she is right in it,” Kennewell said.

Manny Gelagotis, supervising the preparation of Illustrious Lad who finished fifth behind Jungle Cat (Iffraaj) in last year’s renewal, was bullish about the experience of competing in Dubai and cautiously optimistic about the prospects of the I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) gelding - especially if the rain ensures some give in the track.

“The rain’s not a bad thing, the jar out of the track would be good for Illustrious Lad,” he said. “It’s different circumstances to last year with the weather, it’s been cooler and more accommodating for the horse whereas last year it was very hot for two weeks.

“No doubt he’s better this time. I’ve reported back to Peter (Gelagotis) that he hasn’t left an oat, he’s drinking well and all the vet checks have been clear so it’s been smooth sailing.

“His gallop went well on Tuesday and he came out of it bouncing so he’ll present to run to his best. What is his best? I think if he can finish in the top six we’d be happy. With a bit of

luck anything better than that would be above our expectations to be quite fair and genuine but we thought the same last year and he ran terrifically well.

“We bought him for a bit of orientation of the whole set-up on Tuesday night which we didn’t do last year which didn’t help us at all. He melted a bit in the mounting yard, so the last little bit to check is if he copes well with race night and if he does I think he’ll run really well.”

As to the favourite Blue Point, he’s a deserving one but possibly at too short a quote despite winning the Meydan Sprint (Gr 2,

1000m) by five lengths at his first run in 2019 and then adding the Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint (Gr 3, 1200m) to his winning resume on March 9, winning by three lengths.

Neither race had the depth of the Al Quoz Sprint which jockey William Buick concedes without playing down his prospects.

“Yeah this is definitely tougher than his two previous runs in Dubai but they were lead-up races to this,” Buick said. “He’s in great shape and we’re looking forward to it. He’s obviously showed how versatile he is winning over five (1000m) and six (1200m) and hopefully it will be a smooth race for him.

“He’s got a real sprinter’s engine. He really comes alive half way in a race. He’s exciting.”

Appleby added of Blue Point: “Not going to shy away from it at all, he’s developed into a very high class sprinter. He’s done very well here. He had a soft win at five furlongs in the Meydan Sprint and the plan was originally to go straight to the Al Quoz but the Meydan success was like a piece of work to be honest with you.

“He was as fresh as paint afterwards so it

might have been a bit too long to keep a lid on him and we decided to give him another run in the Nad Al Sheba. Again it was a formality and he’s come out of both races in great order and he’s an exciting horse going into this year, firstly for the Al Qouz and later when we get back to Europe.”

Appleby said Blue Point would return to the UK after Saturday’s race and be prepared for the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f), which he won last year.

Appleby also saddles up last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Cross Counter (Teofilo) in the Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 2, 3200m).

“It’s his first start since the Melbourne Cup whereas all our other World Cup night runners have had a run here in Dubai but Cross Counter has really pleased me,” Appleby said.

“He physically looks great and over the last ten days he’s back on his A game; not saying he wasn’t but he’s really sharpened up over the past ten days. He’s the horse everyone’s got to beat.”

A protracted bidding war for a striking Curlin (Smart Strike) colt - eventually purchased by Coolmore Stud's MV Magnier and unnamed

partners for US$3.65 million - fueled a record-setting edition of the Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected two-year-olds in training sale at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday.

From 188 lots catalogued, Fasig-Tipton reported 59 horses sold for gross receipts of US$29,115,000, for a US$493,475 average and a US$375,000 median, all records for the sale since it was relocated to Gulfstream five years ago.

The average and median prices were overall records for the Florida sale that Fasig-Tipton

first conducted in 1984. With 100 horses going through the ring, the 41 that went unsold represented an RNA rate of 41 per cent.

Last year, 61 horses grossed US$23,495,000 for an average price of US$385,164 and a US$295,000 median. The 2018 sale RNA rate was 33 per cent.

"We saw a marketplace today that we hoped for and expected in many regards," said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning jnr. "The upper end of the market was fantastic, with great competition and great depth of buyers and bidders on a large number of horses. We were very pleased with the vibrancy of the market."

Browning said the large number of horses withdrawn from the sale and the RNA rate were

higher than Fasig-Tipton officials would prefer, but noted that was not unusual at a juvenile sale.

He said: "The reality is, there are a lot of evaluative tools that go into a two-year-old sale - how the horse looks on the end of the shank, the under-tack show video, the under-tack workout time, and the vet analysis after - that's why the horses that jump through all the hoops bring a significant premium.

"Right now, consignors have other alternatives, so they're not forced to sell, and we'll see a lot of these horses again at later sales and on the racetrack.

"There is tremendous demand for a quality horse, and people are willing to bid aggressively on those."

The sale topper, bred in Kentucky by Hill 'N' Dale Equine Holdings and Vinnie Viola's St Elias Stables, was offered on behalf of his breeders by JJ Crupi's New Castle Farm as Lot 173. And he was expected to steal the show.

The colt not only has a stellar pedigree - he is a half-brother to Group 1-placed Arabian Hope (Distorted Humor) and stakes winner Counterforce (Smart Strike) - but his demeanour all week impressed buyers, agents, and trainers. As did his co-second-fastest workout of 200 metres in 10 seconds, while he galloped-out powerfully following the breeze.

The crowd in the Gulfstream paddock, where the sale was conducted, were enraptured by the contest for the colt, with agent Jamie McCalmont handling the bidding on behalf of Magnier and unnamed partners, who were represented in the transaction by agent Donato Lanni.

On the other side of the paddock, Browning handled the bidding via phone on behalf of a bidder who declined to be identified. Browning finally shut off his phone and yielded to the Coolmore bid of US$3.65 million, ending a standoff.

"He was such a standout, this horse," McCalmont said. "He is by a great stallion and

has a stallion's pedigree. It was very exciting. Let's hope he can do on the racetrack what he has done here."

"When he crossed the wire in the breeze show, everyone was on the phone," said Lanni, adding that Bob Baffert will train the colt on behalf of Coolmore and "some undisclosed clients that want to stay anonymous. When the horse starts, the names will be in the programme."

Browning likened the sale topper to Zion Williamson, a phenomenal freshman basketball player for the Duke Blue Devils.

"He's a special horse," Browning said. "The first time Zion Williamson walked onto the basketball court, you're like, 'This guy is different.' This horse took your breath away kind of like Zion Williamson did the first time he stepped on the court."

Magnier was involved with the purchase outright or in partnership with four of the six horses sold for seven figures at the sale.

With McCalmont again acting as agent, Magnier took home a colt from the first crop of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) for US$1.65 million.

Consigned as Lot 142 by agent Eddie Woods, the colt was bred in Florida by Cesa Farm and is out of the Graded-winning Tabasco Cat (Storm Cat) mare Spice Island, making him a half-brother to Florida Derby winner Ice Box (Pulpit).

He worked over 200 metres in 10.4 seconds during the under-tack show on Monday and was acquired for US$215,000 by Quarter Pole Enterprises from Denali Stud at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

"Did I think he would bring that? Not in my

wildest dreams," an ecstatic Woods said. "They all don't line up. You've got to buy a lot of nice horses and hope one or two of them pan out and put you in front. He's a 'Pharoah.' They've got style. They move well, they have class, and they're quiet. And this horse is beautiful. He's got a head on him you'd kill for."

"His work wasn't that fast, but his gallop out was one of the fastest gallop outs," McCalmont said. "Let's hope he can be somewhat close to what his father was."

Magnier partnered with California-based owner Kaleem Shah, with agent Ben McElroy signing on behalf of the pair, to purchase a Curlin filly, consigned as Lot 119 by agent Paul Sharp for US$1.3 million.

Produced from the Group 2-winning Argentinian mare Sarasota (Luhuk), the filly is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Salutos Amigos (Salute The Sarge) and Grade 2 winner Sarah's Secret (Leroidesanimaux). She was purchased for US$470,000 by Sand Ridge Stables from agent Bluewater Sales at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale.

Magnier also acquired an Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) colt, Lot 15, for US$1 million from the consignment of Steven Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds. Foaled on March 7, 2017,

the colt - bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings - was produced from the stakes-winning Smoke Glacken (Two Punch) mare Cor Cor and breezed 200 metres in a co-second-fastest time of 10 seconds during the under-tack show.

The colt was bought by Paul Brodsky for US$400,000 from the Summerfield offerings at The October Sale, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale.

"He's a lovely horse and he breezed very well, and Steve (Venosa) was very high on the horse," Magnier said. "So let's hope he works out. We've had luck with Into Mischief in the past with Practical Joke. Let's hope this fella can be as good as him. He breezed well and he's well-built. Plenty of people here had a high opinion of the horse. It's a lot of money, but I suppose he deserved to make it."

After a promising Mornington jump-out where he finished upsides Godolphin-raced stablemate Chenier (Medaglia d’Oro), who was awarded Maiden Of The Week following his devastating Sandown victory on March 20, the Anthony

Freedman-trained Super Seth (Dundeel) created an equally likeable impression when winning a Ballarat Maiden in emphatic style on Sunday.

The son of Dundeel (High Chaparral) broke well widest of all before settling in mid division and making eye-catching headway four deep as the field turned for home.

Mark Zahra then asked the question at the 300 metre mark and the well-supported ($1.75) Super Seth duly responded, scooting clear of his rivals to run out an effortless six-length winner at the line.

Given that he is a son of Arrowfield Stud stallion Dundeel - a multiple Group 1 winner up to 2400 metres - Super Seth may yet show further

improvement when upped in trip, sentiments that were echoed by Zahra in his post-race interview with Racing.com.

The second winner out of the placed mare Salutations, a daughter of the late Redoute’s Choice who comfortably leads this season’s leading broodmare sire by earnings table, Super Seth is a half-brother to Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom), himself a Listed winner who finished runner-up in the Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Super Seth’s second, third and fourth dams were all successful at Group level, with the best-performed of that trio being Solo Performance (Without Fear), who was ranked as joint second top filly on the 1982-83 Australiasian 2YO classifications following her second in Victoria’s premier juvenile contest, the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Kiamichi (Sidestep), the longest price of Godolphin’s six runners in Saturday’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill,

also defied a hectic early tempo and a difficult barrier in an effort that was deserving of more praise in her somewhat surprise win.

Starting at odds of $26, Kiamichi was forced to work very hard in the early stages from barrier 14 before crossing to the lead approaching the 700 metre mark.

Clocked (from the 1000m to the 400m), Kiamichi’s 200 metre breakdown for that early section was 10.64, 11.70 and 11.83 to give her a fast mid-race 600 metre split of 34.17 on the heavy(8) track.

Despite that effort, and when she was entitled to be feeling the effects of her early exertions, Kiamichi responded to Damian Lane’s urgings and grabbed a clear break upon straightening.

She then fought back gamely to defeat stablemate Microphone (Exceed And Excel) by a length, with another Godolphin-raced filly Lyre (Lonhro) a half-length back in third in a time of 1:12.82.

After the fast early pace, the race was set-up for the late-closers but Kiamachi showed her toughness in safely holding those well-performed and more-favoured juveniles over the final stages.

It was Kiamichi’s third win in five starts and

she again proved her ability on rain-affected tracks having won the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in heavy(10) conditions at Rosehill only seven days earlier.

The following race, The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) also saw another very good on-pace performance with the fast sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi) holding on to score by the barest of margins after setting a surprisingly-quick early tempo.

Having his third start for new trainer Chris Waller, Nature Strip appeared to have little option but to take the lead despite suggestions pre-race that he may be ridden more patiently.

And with James McDonald seemingly not forcing Nature Strip in the early stages, the speedy four-year-old returned the fastest early sectional times of the day.

Clocked from the 1000 metres, Nature Strip’s 200 metre breakdown was: 10.55, 11.11 (400m in 21.66), 11.34 (600m in 33.00) and 11.68 to give him a fast 44.68 for that 800 metre mid-race section (to the 200 metres point).

He then felt the effects, running his final 200 metres in 12.58, but had enough in hand to gain an incredibly close decision by a nose from the late-closing Pierata (Pierro) to record his tenth win and his first Group 1 success in 15 starts.

Nature Strip has been criticised for his apparent inconsistent form, which is simply due to going too fast too soon, something he had done at his previous start as highlighted in this column when he tired for tenth in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield on February 23.

Hopefully Waller can rectify his problem of over-racing in the early stages and, if he can, On The Watch is of the opinion that Nature Strip could develop into one of the best sprinters (if not the best) in the county – he is certainly one of the fastest already.

The Galaxy win was part of a Group 1-winning treble for the Waller stable with Winx (Street Cry) taking out the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) and The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m).

But those races were run in direct contrast to the aforementioned Golden Slipper and Galaxy that featured hot early tempos.

Winx settled back in second last place in the eight-horse field with the leader Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) setting a moderate pace that saw the 800 metres (from the 1400m to the 600m) clocked in only 49.01.

That prompted Hugh Bowman to commence his move on the champion at that stage and she soon responded by moving up (deep on the track) before racing away for a very soft three and half-length victory - her 32nd in succession and her fourth George Ryder in as

many years Winx covered that first steady 800 metres (1400m to the 600m) in 48.91 (12.22 200m rate) before dashing home in a fast 34.45 (11.48 200m rate) for the final 600 metres – the fastest closing time for that section on the day.

Then in the Rosehill Guineas, the leader Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia d’Oro) was timed to run his early 1000 metre section (from the 1800m to the 800m) in only 1:04.47 before significantly lifting the tempo.

The Autumn Sun had raced back in sixth place and was under pressure at that stage to pick-up, especially in the heavy conditions and advancing to the 2000 metres of the Rosehill Guineas.

But the talented colt responded to Kerrin McEvoy, took the lead halfway down the straight and then dug deep to defeat the New Zealand colt Arrogant (Ocean Park) by a head to record his fifth Group 1 success and his eighth win in nine starts.

The Autumn Sun was timed to run that early 1000 metre section (1800m to the 800m) in 1:04.86 (12.97 200m rate) before sprinting 47.82 (11.95 200m rate) for his final 800 metres.

Overall, the time for the 2000 metre journey on the heavy(8) track was only 2:07.28 which was 7.29 seconds outside of Octagonal’s (Zabeel) 1.59.99 track record.

The final word this week goes to the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained juvenile filly Cheer Leader (Snitzel) who followed placings at her first two starts with an impressive on-pace performance in taking out the Valley Pearl Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

She showed good pace from her inside barrier (1) to lead, travelled nicely before dashing clear on turning for home and then drew right away to score brilliantly by five lengths in a time of 1:10.40.

But it was Cheer Leader’s early sectional that caught our eye, her 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m) being 10.40, 11.18 (400m in 21.58), 11.32 (600m in 32.90) and 11.74 to give her a fast 800 metres (to the 200m point) of 44.64.

Cheer Leader then clocked 12.40 in coasting to the line for a quick last 1000 metres in 57.04 – she is a filly to watch.

Star Thoroughbreds Denise Martin and champion trainer Chris Waller have been a formidable force of late and the depth of their yearling division was on

show at Riverside Stables last weekend.Martin and Waller teamed up in 2014 and

Star’s purple and white colours have played an important part in his rise to the top of our training ranks. They hit the ground running this year with $1 million winners Invincibella (Magic Millions Fillies & Mares) in January and Fiesta (Inglis Sprint) in February.

The seven-figure daughters of I Am Invincible helped Martin assemble 9 yearlings for the latest Star Collection at Riverside Stables. “There were some sensational young ones on parade on Sunday morning,” compere Caroline Searcy said. “And it was great to hear from Saturday’s three-time Group 1 winning trainer Chris Waller.”

Brett Howard of Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) joined the team at the yearling sales this year and has so far bid a total of $3.34 million on behalf of Star. The numbers will increase again during the Inglis Easter Sale on April 9 and 10.

“I had been doing some work for Denise in the broodmare market and it developed from there,” Howard said. “Denise is part and parcel

of the racing scene. She’s a people person and is the ultimate professional.

“We targeted I Am Invincible at the Inglis Classic Sale and bought two of his fillies for $330,000 and $300,000.”

Martin was also responsible for the quote of the Classic Sale. “I didn’t think I would be able to buy both of them,” she admitted. “But winning million-dollar races makes you braver.”

Originally from Tasmania, Martin made a career change from hospitality to managing racing syndicates some 25 years ago with Gai Waterhouse and among her bloodstock advisors included the late Steve Brem and Henry Plumptre.

The Tasmania connection continues to pay dividends with money-spinners like Eastender (Tickets). He was undefeated in four starts during the summer carnival that climaxed with a Group 3 double in the Hobart and Launceston Cups.

“I bought Eastender for $22,000 at the 2015 Tasmanian Magic Millions and he always looked a year behind growing up,” Martin recalled. “But I told the owners to be patient because he was a proper horse and he’s developed into a wonderful stayer.”

Howard has a Tassie link of his own through Needs Further who is hot property after siring Mystic Journey to wins in the G1

Australian Guineas and $5 million All Star Mile at Flemington.

“Gooree Park’s Andrew Baddock asked if I could find a stud for Needs Further,” Howard recalled. “He rated the horse and so did I.”

A long-standing member of Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA), Howard is based at Glenesk Thoroughbreds, Mount Vincent, in the lower Hunter Valley and he drove up to Gooree to inspect Needs Further at Mudgee.

Needs Further (Encosta de Lago) is a half-brother to G1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) winner Hallowed Crown and he had completed a hat-trick in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes over the same track and trip for Gooree owner Eduardo Cojuangco.

“I liked the look of him and thought there would be sufficient interest to place him,” Howard told Aushorse earlier this month. “I believed in the horse as a stallion prospect and put together a partnership to buy him with our Victorian clients Joe Panzera, Eddie and Carlo Deluise.

“The Whishaw family which own and operate Armidale Stud in Tasmania could also see what we could see, and David and Robyn had no hesitation buying 50% when they flew up to inspect him.

“Now the horse is off to a flyer with just three crops racing and Mystic Journey has taken that to the next level this year.

“We’ve been receiving lots of calls from mainland studmasters attempting to acquire Needs Further for their farms. The Whishaws are wonderful people and we will be guided by them. Needs Further might end up on the mainland but the price will have gone up a touch!”

Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) was formed in 1988 to maintain, improve and develop the standards, status and services of bloodstock agents throughout Australia. Its members operate with the utmost integrity and professionalism and are bound by the strict Industry Code of Conduct.

Stakes (1500m) and Ngawyni Trophy (1600m) in April.

Cup Night is raced by Carbery’s wife Jessica and the rest of his family in partnership with trainer Bernie Miller and his wife Karen. “We regard them as family and vice versa so this means a lot,” Carbery said after first-up win. “He’s been a special horse from the time he was foaled. I’ve stuck with him when I could have ridden better-credentialled horses.

“He was in the right spot today and probably hit the front too early. He does tend to wait for them so I kept him honest in the straight.”

Cup Night was foaled the night Prince Of Penzance won the 2015 Melbourne Cup. His dam Walk In Beauty (Barely A Moment) was prepared by Miller and was retired immediately after winning two in a row at Bunbury in February 2013.

Maschino (Encosta De Lago) was renowned for his whirlwind finishes winning 7 races topped by the G3 R J Peters Stakes (1500m) for owner Jim Anderson. He was also placed in the G3 Asian Beau Stakes and LR Northerly Stakes before a tendon injury drew the curtain on a career that spanned 22 starts.

From a handful of mares in his first two books, he has sired Cup Night and fellow city winners like flying filly Fabergino, Snowchino, Fa'lion Maschine, Scooter's Machine and Cockney Crew who just missed black-type when fourth in the LR Roberts Quality on Saturday.

The numbers have escalated in response to those results although he could have joined Trade Fair in that stable in the sky after being bitten by a snake last year. Alwyn studmaster John Andrew noticed Maschino was acting off colour and the reason became clear when he combed the yard and found a dugite!

The changing of the guard at Alwyn Park was evident when Jedaffair (Trade Fair) and Cup Night (Maschino) saluted at Ascot last

Saturday. The Serpentine stud lost Trade Fair (Ire) in

March 2018 but Maschino is marching on as one of the most promising stallions in Western Australia.

Trade Fair has sired the winners of 21 races since the New Year and he capped that run with Jedaffair’s Listed victory in the Natasha Stakes (2200m) on Saturday. She cut the breeze outside the leader Osipova before pinching a break at the top of the straight.

Trainer Adam Durrant misjudged the 3yo filly early on when she was running in sprints. “We were completely off the mark where she needed to be,” he admitted. “She was working well but not performing. We were at a loss so rolled the dice and stepped her up in distance.”

Jedaffair replied with wins at Pinjarra (1406m) and Bunbury (1675m) before completing a hat-trick over 2200m. “She’s a real nice type and has a staying pedigree on

the dam’s side,” Durrant continued. “We only started screwing her down three or four weeks ago and she’s still building fitness-wise.”

Bred by Lynward Park owner Ted van Heemst, she’s the final foal from unraced mare King’s Lynn (King’s Best). Second-dam Miss Josh (Nasty And Bold) was imported to Australia by Stratheden Stud after winning the G1 Gamely Hcp at Hollywood Park.

Trade Fair covered 11 books in WA for a syndicate managed by van Heemst and was a much-loved stallion at Alwyn Park after initially shuttling to Evergreen Lodge.

The G3 WA Oaks (2400m) worth $250,000 on March 30 is the obvious target for Jedaffair and her owner Wes Martin. He bought her as a foal for just $1,750 at the 2016 Magic Millions Perth Winter Sale.

Maschino is also on a roll with Cup Night. He was given the run of the race in the Seppelt Wines Hcp (1200m) and coasted to the line under Patrick Carbery to score by a length.

The talented 3yo gelding earned minor black-type when placed in last year’s LR Perth Stakes and will be set for the LR Raconteur
